Broken screen - USB debug disabled - What to do? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
my wife dropped my previous Nexus 4 many times and now the screen is dead. Would like to sell it for parts. Digitizer still works. Now, I would like to clean everthing, and it a perfect world, install Lollipop!
But, I need to get access to the phone. I've spent many hours now reading different methods, but I'm getting to a common issue: USB debug (ADB) not enabled. I would need to get in recovery mode and put a custom ROM. However, even with the method to get into recovery mode, I would need the screen at the choice at boot to select Recovery, unless someone here tells me exactly what button to press to get into this.
I'm also open for any other solution.

Is the bootloader unlocked? Do you have a custom recovery? If your bootloader is unlocked you can boot into twrp custom recovery and get access to your files though it.

Well I only got in the boot when I got the phone the first time a year ago and wiped everything to factory, so I don't think I still have the bootloader unlocked, unless wiping everything doesn't wipe the bootloader.

Unless you specifically unlocked it using fastboot or a tool kit I doubt it's unlocked. Which is too bad because it would have made it easier to get to the files. Now you'll have to blindly use the keys to get into recovery and do a factory reset. And hope for the best because you'll probably never know for sure whether you got it right or not.

Did you unlock the boot loader?

First Nexus phone, and I'm really loving stock so far.. Did you unlock your boot loader? And if you did, for what reason? Try to convince me! Ahhh..
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I unlocked it for the sole purpose of having it unlocked in case I need it done later. I'd rather not have to worry about losing everything just because I suddenly need CWM or root access.

This. First thing I always do with a new Nexus device is unlock the boot loader, since doing so erases your phone and I don't want to start over with setting everything up. I also rooted, but I still would have unlocked the boot loader just to get it out of the way, even if I wasn't rooting. There are no downsides.
Also, a quick PSA: I also unlocked the boot loader on my N10, and after doing so, I immediately got stuck on the Nexus flashing "X" logo. If this happens on the N4 when unlocking (or the N10, obviously), the following should fix it:
1. Reboot into Fast Boot
2. Select Recovery using volume rocker. Hit power to select. You'll get the android mascot with the red exclamation point.
4. Press Power and Volume Up at the same time (this is the side of the volume rocker that is away from the power button for those new to the device on the N10).
5. Choose to wipe all data. Confirm the selection.
6. Reboot.
I didn't wipe using recovery but I just went back into the bootloader and reflashed the factory image.
In hindsight it would have been easier to wipe.

Just to add, if you ever need to re-lock the BL, all you have to do is type fastboot oem lock
No reason to right now IMO, only thing I kind of want to do is root (for adfree) but until CM10.2 comes out I'm not in a rush to mess around with roms.
Yep but I ain't rooted - I'll stick with stock for now & receive the official updates
When mine comes ill leave it blank for a bit (few days) so I don't loose anything when I root
Can Google tell when you have relocked it?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I didn't. I heard that if you unlock you bootloader/root you can't upload photosphere pictures to G+ anymore. I wanted to take a few pictures first then root it. I don't have too many things on my phone now it won't be too much of trouble when I unlock the bootloader/root it.

No, they cannot, unless you are unable to relock it for some reason.
Is there any downside to unlocking the boot loader?
I am receiving my Nexus some time today, and it will be my first Android phone. I may decide down the road to put a custom ROM on it, so does it make sense to unlock it now and get it out of the way?

No downside, you will still get OTA updates.
Do it now, save the data wipe.

[Q] Nexus 7 wont boot

I was playing a game on my nexus 7, it froze then when rebooted it it just got stuck on google screen. Read a bunch of stuff, went into recovery and tried to recover, it would say erasing but never go any further, just sits there. got toolkit tried to restore factory with that, now when it boots I still just get google screen but I get the menu in corner for start/boot/recover/power off. still never boots, when I try to run recovery now it doesnt even go to erasing. Ive read everything I can find to restore it, got 2 toolkits, unfortunatly everything tells me to put it in debug mode, which is funny cause if I could boot up and go into settings to turn on bebug mode then I wouldnt be having these problems... Can someone please help, Im good with computers but dont know much of tablets. I did no messing with tablet besides downloading updates when they came out.

My guess is no, I never messed with any of my system stuff. Everything was factory except for the updates it had me do as they came out.
How long you let it sit in recovery erasing before you rebooted it? Is there an option in boot loader or recovery for a factory reset? Beings you're not rooted I doubt those one click tool kits will work for you.

It sat in erasing for 1 hour and didnt do anything. I was doing factory reset in recovery.
As long as the boot loader starts you can recover your Nexus. Check this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796
If he can't unlock the bootloader then there's not a whole lot he can do. Run "fastboot getvar all" while in bootloader and tell us what it says please. If adb is seeing your phone in recovery, then run an adb shell and do "ls -l /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/" please.
Sorry I can't help further but I just got this and don't know much. I am glad others came in to give you more help.

Just sayin, I think you guys need to pull the back cover and disconnect the battery for at least one hour.
I am really new at this but it helped me save mine twice. I think?
After you plug the battery back in try fast boot.

They have no way in knowing you pulled your back cover off. Just be careful so not to leave pry marks. Only way they will know is if you tell them you did it.

[Q] Possible Hard Brick? (URGENT)

A little background info:
ATT GS4, rooted and on stock firmware
Had TWRP 2.6.0.0 on my phone
Tried to flash Illusion 7|15 or 7|16?
---------------------------------------------------
In the past, I've tried to flash illusion, with some success. I was able to get to the homescreen, but when I flashed my data backup. The phone wouldn't boot, so I reverted to stock. A few weeks later, I decide to take another spin at the rom and get it working. I wiped the data/cache/dalvik, and flashed the rom with gapps, rebooted the phone, and nothing happens. The phone keeps vibrating, but there is nothing happening past that.
After a significant amount of research, I've found a few tools/advice. I've downloaded ODIN and the (disgustingly large) tar file, but it doesn't have any use if the phone cannot be recognized by the computer since I am unable to enter download mode or recovery mode.
I found another tool that is supposed to "resurrect" the phone provided by legija. The only unfortunate part is there are no instructions provided, and once again, my computer isn't recognizing the phone as a device, as if it wasn't plugged in to the usb port at all. The application asks for a port number, but I have no clue what relevance a port number has, or at least that a usb port has a numerical value.
Anyway, is there anything left for me to do or is this a fancy new paperweight?
Excuse me for any poor grammar, I'm a little antsy about this

Do you have AT&T insurance? Maybe the phone can have an accident? I would know of no other way to fix it if Odin isn't recognizing it. ):

I've seen the repeated vibrating issue before from flashing the wrong file. Download mode was still accessible. Try again by hooking up the phone to the USB slot without the battery in it. Hold Vol Down + Home while inserting the battery. See if download mode will come up. If it does, Odin may not fix it, and you may end up using KIES, and that's if it does go into Download mode.

Good deal man, glad you got a new one.
I have another question for somebody knowledgeable in rooting/rom flashing:
I think this was because the s4 bootloader is locked (through an update), would this cause the phone to hard brick? I've had nasty experiences in the past with locked bootloaders!
If it is locked, is there a way to unlock it? Or does it even need to be unlocked to flash a rom?
Thanks!

I ran the casual root and now have my root and recovery. A couple of questions:
Does this also unlock the bootloader?
Somebody said that twrp flashes roms as if the bootloader is unlocked, so it wouldn't matter if it was or not. Is this true?
I guess really my question is, once I run casual root, is my phone ready to flash?

Your phone is ready to flash, just make sure the ROM you flash has been Lokied or you'd have to flash a Loki kernel/LokiDoki after flashing the ROM (but before rebooting).

If you are going to use TWRP, make sure the ROM has LOKI applied, and if it doesn't, flash the Loki_Doki patch last before rebooting.
If you use OUDHS recovery, it will Auto-Loki whatever you flash.

[Q] HELP!!! Nexus 4 stuck in what i think is "recovery mode"

Hello All,
About 2 days ago i tried to root my google nexus 4, I dont know what i did, but now when i turn it on it shows the google logo then goes to where it shows an android with a red exclamation mark, does anyone know how this can be fixed, any help would be much appreciated!!
Can you be a bit more specific on what you did? Or what guide you followed?
Rooting is quick and easy on a nexus
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Then flash ROM of choice in recovery
Reboot

Ok, i had successfully rooted my phone, i then went to put on a new rom so i could use OTG storage. That got me completely stuck, i tried toget back to my normal phone but didnt know how. I foolishly went into recovery mode, and wiped everything off it. and just now i cant even do anything it just has a red light flashing at the bottom, i hope this has helpt in some way.
Do you have a custom recovery? Use adb sideload to flash the ROM, or if you have a working otg cable this should be fine too
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
UPDATE: The red light has gone (was just low on power) But the phone is still stuck in recovery mode. i have tried to "apply update from ADB" with my mac but it doesnt work and im not sure if i am doing it propperly.
I am pretty new to this kinda stuff, so i dont know what a custom recovery is, and i honestly have no idea what to do, im not really bothered about the root anymore i would rather just have my phone back to normal.
Please dont take this the wrong way and I mean no disrespect, but maybe we should just get your phone up and running and then maybe a few months from now after you've done a whole lot of reading you can consider rooting again. The n4 isn't the most expensive phone in the world but it would still be a shame to brick it, as much as I believe all androids are best to be rooted the user really needs to understand fully what s/he is doing, 95% of "help my device is bricked" threads come from lack of homework, which is easily 100s of threads a day across xda alone
OK, sorry for the lecture I've just ran into this a lot lately, and I'd be glad to help
I try not to use apple products as a whole so I can't say for sure why its not connecting with adb, is this for sure set up properly? As in has adb or fastboot worked fine in the past? Also is device currently unlocked? By a custom recovery I mean nonstock, not an oem, like twrp or clockwork.
If you want root let's download the latest twrp image for the n4, if you want factory than download latest from here

Is there any way to save data from a soft bricked Nexus 4?

I am experiencing with a soft bricked Nexus 4. Surely, I tried to do "Power + volume down" and tip on the internet. But, it did not work for me. my cell is on the bricked. For now, there is no way except for "reset to facory". But, I did not data back up. It's my dilemma. :crying: First of all, I should try to save data to my computer.
If my computer is broken, I can take the HDD(storage) out from that, and save data using connecting device like "SATA to USB". As Nexus 4 use only internal storage on (maybe, flash rom?)the board, I can not take it out.

I found one thread have the same problem. My symptoms is the same as his

the phone boots, shows the google logo then goes into those 4 colourful dots that fly around and it just stays like that. I left it like this over night and nothing happened.

I am referring to the answer. So, I try to do wipe cache on recovery mode according to that. It doesn't help me.
Thanks for any other tips or comments in advance.

Unlocking your bootloader will wipe your device. So in your case it's not an option. You're probably going to have to give up on your data and lose it to get your device working again.

Thanks jd1639.:good:
After reading about unlocking bootloader, unfortunately I get to know that will wipe all the system data and my data on my device. It's the same as what you comment.:crying:
A couple of years ago, there was an application program for Rom Flashing called Flashtool. I could do that with unchecking option "wipe user data". Surely, to back up data before that was strongly advised though.
Maybe, due to security, it seems to be impossible on recent version. I
am anticipating for any other idea to save data before get it work again.
Thanks in advance.
