Thoughts on the Samsung Theme Store - Galaxy Note5 General

My Rant...
I really love the idea about samsungs theme store but they have totally went about it the wrong way.... They are putting the cart before the horse by not making the theme creator open to the public. They should make it open to the public to get more themers interested and test any submissions so they don't harm any phones. Instead they are denying anyone that doesn't have a hello kitty portfolio. It makes you think it is being run by a 10 year old girl. Also the theme store app is lacking... It is very basic and doesn't even have search. Granted there is only a couple dozen themes but it is that they didn't think ahead. I really hope they rethink how they are approaching this or it will just become another useless option because someone will come along and do it better.
I hope I didn't offend any hello kitty fans...

Agree, theme store must be open public like htc. I was using M9 and Htc' s theme store way better than samsung 's.

I totally agree. They need a search, allow it to be open, also it would be nice if you could choose not to use the keyboard included over samsung stock. Most of the themes aren't good though and do lag my note 5.

I had the m8 loved HTC theme engine. Create ur own themes that was dope. Samsung needs to do that

I was going to wait for the HTC E9 but my s4 decided I needed a new phone now and there is no release date yet if there is going to be one. I have always liked sense a lot more then TW. The s4 was my first Samsung... I have always had HTC before that phone going all the way back to the evo and thunderbolt( don't remember which came first). TW has always looked cheap and lacking to me and why it needs good theme support.
I hope Samsung has second thoughts and corrects before they get left behind.

While i think the samsung theme store is a great idea, there are only a few (very few) good themes in there. Also why does it look like a 10 year old would be the only one to like almost all of these themes? I don't think any 10 year olds are using a phone as expensive as the galaxy note 5...

the Samsung theme store is for more then the note 5.

I'm aware of that but maybe Samsung should have a 'grown-up' theme store

Ideal theme store should be like the xiaomi has on its MIUI...

Random Idea

Hey guys,
I know that samsung reps read the XDA forums and are trying to work with the developers so i thought id just put out an idea.
Samsung is probably the best handset maker when it comes to specs and hardware but one thing they lack is a great software like the Sense UI that HTC has which is one of the main reasons many choose HTC over Samsung. Wouldn't it just be great for Samsung to just make a deal with guys like the SPB shell 3D team and create a very animated home UI which will be on par with HTC if not better. don't get me wrong, touchwiz 4 is a massive improvement but is nowhere near as good as Sense.
Sammy did make a deal with Gameloft and were giving the Asphalt 5 game free on its store, maybe they could do something similar with guys at spb or just buy em. Might also help with the Apple lawsuit they are facing which although might not be true leaves a bad taste for consumers.
Anyway, this is just a little something i was thinking about.
its would be grate but i dont see it happing....
samsung want to creat the software by her self - atlist i think so
but yea its can be very cool if the SGS3 will have SPB launcher

Question about touchwiz.

Hello, I'm coming from an iphone, I've had one since they came out. But I'm about to move to a galaxy s3, I know I know, it took me long enough.
My question is, I have been reading this forum for a few days and it seems that most people that have a galaxy s3 really don't like the version of ICS and touchwiz that come on the phone. Why is this? What about it is so bad? Again I have never had an android, and have only used a galaxy s3 in person a few times at the AT&T store. Just trying to learn.
Also anyone have any tips to someone moving from an iphone?
Reason is because ics stock looks might be better for some people, and some apps look and act different, coming from an iPhone I wouldn't worry much, I feel the touchwiz makes it easier for iPhone user to enjoy android, there is a lot good features on galaxy s 3 that you would enjoy, I would recommend to get an extra battery and play with the OS a lot is different, also get ics keyboard on the play store because stock keyboard sucks, once you comfortable with Android try to find out more about rooting and cyanogen 9 which is android os without any added features from any OEM good luck and enjoy the big screen

It's all personal preference.I believe Most people don't like touchwiz because its to far away from "vanilla" android which would be the experience you get on a nexus device. I'd say try it out and if you like it stick with it, if not you can switch home launchers or go to a new rom. I've recently switch from an iPhone myself and personally don't mind touchwiz on the s3

S IV coming

Samsung is planning S IV to roll out in April 2013 possibly with unbreakble screen. Other features 13 mp camera picture density 441 ppi.(times of India Banaglore edition dated 7Dec2012, page18). So Note 3 may roll out in 4th quarter 2013 for which I am waiting, by that time my note 1 will be around 2 years old and I could willfully sell or give it to a family member. I think most of you will do the same thing, I shall catch up you guys there.
PS: I do not want to miss this crowd.
The best thing to do is buy one every two galaxies. I have an S2 and I'm gonna get an S4, S6 and so on.....

I think I'm gonna jump ship to the Sony Xperia Yuga,if it comes out......with cyanogenmod leaving the Galaxy and Note lines(unless Sammy decides to scrap the Exynos SoC.....which,lets face it, is not gonna happen) and Sony offering full GPL compliance(read: almost all source code is released), I'm thinking about the Yuga.
Doesn't matter about the S-Pen, don't use it anyways; just bought the phone for the screen size and a .3" decrease doesn't seem that much different to me.
^^^This.
I don't care if it's S13 with fantastic phone features, which also gives you a BJ in the morning. Never again a Samsung for me. Ever.
Note 3 will be my next one regardless its features.

Brickbug, no source code released despite numerous promises, CM team moving out of Samsuck development.
While we all (read I) appreciate what the CM team and team Hacksung may have done, lets face it, they are a minuscule minority to Samsung. CM also does not offer anything revolutionary over what a standard device can do, (OK, so maybe the code and is cleaner and there's less bloat, but its just as easy to remove the bloat from TW), and in terms of the Galaxy note, it actually takes away some of the most useful parts.
99% of users never even root their devices, and for them, the Brickbug does not exist and never has.
It's hardly a good reason to never use another Samsung device...Especially since they really are ahead of the curve at this point.
Just my opinion.

The simple fact is we arent part of the 99% that never root their phones. We are the ones who enjoy the freedom of customizing every little aspect and squeezing every ounze of performance out. Some (like myself) can't stand touchjizz and to say that cm doesn't offer anything revolutionary is plain ignorant. The fact that Samsung isn't keeping the promises they make and continues to string us along is disgusting. I was a Samsung fanboy for years but after this ordeal I won't be buying another Samsung phone until they get their act together. Maybe cm is a miniscule minority to Samsung but there are still thousands of us who come here, to xda, to tweak, tinker and get the most out of our devices and cyanogenmod plays an enormous role in that. As xda members we look for devices with dev support, you can have the most high end phone in the world but if the devs aren't given what they need from the manufacturers then what's the point in even being here? You might as well become an iSheep. I am another who will be picking up a Sony yuga unless Samsung has their **** sorted by the time they release the gs4. For a company that's fighting apple as much as Samsung is they're starting to look more and more like them every day

+1 with not getting another Samsung. The Note will be my first and last Samsung phone.
I'm so grateful for the devs that have made my Note worth having, if it wasn't for them I would of upgraded a long time a go.

I don't care about brand. Only real estate. The next 5.3 to 6 inch screen phone with up to par technology is getting my money.
For the record, the Note looks terrible and build quality is even worse. I didn't buy a note 2.
The market is improving too fast these days.. Barely have time to catch up tiwht the bandwagon!

Wouldn't this be more suitable in the S III forum? I don't care one bit, since I bought the Note for the screen size.
If S IV has the flexible 5" screen I'm jumping straight.

Like you said. Every odd number note is best to buy Like note1, note3, note5 so on...
Probably going to skip Samsung next time if Sony will continue their pro-development policy with Xperia Yuga phone. Don't get me wrong, CM10 runs great on my Note, but it's not nice to know some bugs will probably never be fixed because Samsung didnt keep their promise about releasing sources AGAIN. And since i hate TW-based roms, i can't stick with stock.
Anyway, Sony's TimeScape ( is this what it's called ? ) Android mod is probably the best non-aosp android build...
Well Samsung works for me. I had to root GS2 for regional font support and print screen. In GNote, I ran stock unrooted for 6 months as all that I needed were already there. Then I started exploring and flashed several ROMs. Some which are closest to Nexus version have everything in white background (eye straining). Some do not support SPen. Some had more annoying bugs than Samsung stock. So finally back to stock TW and TW is blessing. If I buy Galaxy Nexus, I will want to flash TW. When OS starts to reach maturity, having latest OS is not always required on the first day. For example - we can almost run everything in Windows XP, the same has started to hold true in Android too. And SPen is blessing, it has saved me borrowing pen from waiter and draw quick diagrams on tissue paper dozen times.

HTC One

Anyone care to speculate if HTC is feeling pressure to put a One on the play store?
Assuming the criteria would be:
-unlocked bootloader
-Stock Android
-Small price reduction (or price match to Dev edition 650)
Personally this woul be a very very good option for a Canadian such as myself. The One is definitely my first choice but Samsung is doing such a good job at luring me in with the things I value. HTC only seems to go half way, especially since Samsung just raised the bar and went full android, so to speak.
Speculate away!

I don't think HTC feels anything like that. As many people said, S4 nexus is expensive for many people and its not like everyone wants stock android. It'll be directed to a certain group of customers.
I definitely agree that a stock S4 is for a very select group of people. I'm not sure how that is too much of a deterrent for HTC... actually I don't understand HTC's actions at all. They always go halfway, it's like the marketing/lawyering departments have the leadership by the balls... Sort of like when the wife lets you buy a new sports car but she only approves small block engines that are sporty. Not the same thing at all!!
How much does it cost HTC or Samsung to strip and maintain a phone to AOSP?
I can't imagine the HTC One with out Sense 5. It makes it for me (as well as the build etc).

I agree, I will chose Sense 5 over stock any day. Now if it was Sense 4.1 or touchwiz I can understand wanting it gone, but Sense 5 is so great IMO. I wouldn't mind the option, but things like camera (getting the image chip to work with pure android) and battery life seems to be what always keeps my HTC phone away from the pure android feel.
I have used plenty of HTC phones in the past and most of them had some form of HTC sense on them, and i have always preferred sense over stock. My last device was a nexus 4 which was pure aosp, and while it was definitely not bad, i found myself wanting sense on it all the time. I get that people have their own preferences, but htc builds their devices around sense and optimises sense to use on their hardware. I don't think HTC would release a aosp version. It would be nice if it did because we would get updates faster, but i don't see that happening anytime soon.
I read an article yesterday about some HTC Employee who tweeted something along the lines of "You can pay $649 for a cheap bit f plastic...or you could wait " Maybe HTC has something already in the works?
*EDIT* Found another article stating that HTC have denied rumours that they will be releasing a "Nexus" HTC One.

^^ This. I feel releasing an aosp SIV especially not under the Nexus moniker is nothing more then another attempt to saturate the market and artificially inflate sales numbers. I think for that tiny community who doesnt root an aosp out of the box is a viable option. Look at our community though, we have aokp, cm, pa and all that jazz. For the larger community of rooters and flashers it just seems redundant to me.

I have been using AOSP on all my devices since the very beginning, but for some reason i find myself really enjoying sense, i tried flashing CM10 but i did not like it =/ im just going to patiently wait for sense 5.1 4.2.2
I mean you could just get the dev edition and put cm10 on it, will take 5 minutes to flash

I would like to add that putting something on the play store increases online availability dramatically. It's generally difficult to buy unlocked cell phones online without paying an extra premium. Especially if you don't live in the US! Yes there are ways but the party store is very accessible and hassle free. As a Canadian this is a huge plus. Just look at how many of us are screaming to get access to a Dev edition.
I've had to spend over 100 bucks in services for the privilege of doing so and then warranty suddenly becomes a huge issue. This is a huge reason the S4 is appealing as a person who doesn't do contracts.
I didn't like AOSP on my HTC One, for some reason sense is so freakin smooth and the eco system is amazing.

I have been a nexus user for 3 years and personally prefer sense after switching to HTC one. Sense 5 is really awesome

Maybe I should give sense a try... I'm seriously hooked on AOKP though... The level of customization is superior to none! Or maybe I an missing something.
Pretty much that is my end game desire. HTC one with 64GB and AOKP ponies.
I should apologize! Apparently the xperia Z pushed to aosp long before the S4. This really make me consider HTC stepping up to the plate as a real possibility since all the kids on the block are doing it.
Throwing it into the play store might not happen though.

I really want this feature too. I'd like the black theme to save some battery with the AMOLED screen, and the other themes are just for fun.
While this is being worked on, I suggest to officially complain to Samsung about this: [email protected]
Here is Samsung's reply to my request to have the SG6 Theme Engine on the Note 4 -- basically, you're not going to get it, and if you don't like it, FU.
We understand your concern, however, the electronics business model is predicated upon cutting-edge research and continued innovative development. Today's access to the ever changing technology landscape is predicated on an infinite loop of continuous improvement that stimulates innovation.
Please note, all Samsung products are manufactured to the specifications of the service provider for whom they are produced, however, we will forward your feedback along to the appropriate parties for further review and consideration.
We again appreciate your feedback.
Thank you for your business.

But if we really want to get this for the Note 4, I seriously suggest that anyone who reads this thread that wants it, to complain to Samsung. I'll even write here a basic email template that anyone is free to change (which I suggest it should be paraphrased, since it will look like spam if it's the same email body) Hopefully if they get enough customers complaining and requesting this, they'll actually will provide this to Note 4 owners.
Email to: [email protected] or [email protected]
Email Template:
Dear Sir/Madam:
As a Samsung customer, and an owner of the Samsung Note 4, I am disappointed to know that this phone does not have the Theme Engine that the SG6 has. After spending $[INSERT PRICE OF PHONE] on this current Flagship phone from [INSERT CARRIER,] I discovered that this does not have the Theme Engine that the SG6 has. They are equally priced and are equally current Samsung Flagship phones, so I'm quite disappointed that Samsung has still not pushed the Theme Engine to the Note 4.
The Lollipop update to my Note 4 contains design/style/color elements that I do not like and currently have no ability to change. With the Theme Engine update, I will be able to change that and customize the Note 4 to my preference.
My request is to please update Note 4 owners with the same Theme Engine as the SG6. They are both current Flagship phones, and deserve this customization update.
Thank you,
[Your Name]
I wouldn't mind if they charged for themes
I'm hoping it will come with the 5.1.1 update, guess we have to be a bit more patient :crying: ; I can't wait to change even more from the stock touchwiz look:crying:

I honestly don't think it will unless enough people complain and request it from Samsung.
I really believe that if not enough people do complain/request it, the SG6 Theme Engine will only be applied to the Note 5.
As Samsung either:
1. Will not know that Note 4 users want it.
2. Will not know that Note 4 users are interested in it.
3. They do know but not enough pressure is being applied on them to actually implement it on the Note 4.
So.....it will just be another selling point for the Note 5 for new buyers (as it is for the SG6), as $crew you, you already own the Note 4, why should we bother giving you that.
Until enough hell is raised over at Samsung from Note 4 owners, I don't think Note 4 users will get this.
Again, I'd suggest copy/paste and modify the email template I wrote above in this thread to ask them for it.
