I really want this feature too. I'd like the black theme to save some battery with the AMOLED screen, and the other themes are just for fun.
While this is being worked on, I suggest to officially complain to Samsung about this: [email protected]
Here is Samsung's reply to my request to have the SG6 Theme Engine on the Note 4 -- basically, you're not going to get it, and if you don't like it, FU.
We understand your concern, however, the electronics business model is predicated upon cutting-edge research and continued innovative development. Today's access to the ever changing technology landscape is predicated on an infinite loop of continuous improvement that stimulates innovation.
Please note, all Samsung products are manufactured to the specifications of the service provider for whom they are produced, however, we will forward your feedback along to the appropriate parties for further review and consideration.
We again appreciate your feedback.
Thank you for your business.

But if we really want to get this for the Note 4, I seriously suggest that anyone who reads this thread that wants it, to complain to Samsung. I'll even write here a basic email template that anyone is free to change (which I suggest it should be paraphrased, since it will look like spam if it's the same email body) Hopefully if they get enough customers complaining and requesting this, they'll actually will provide this to Note 4 owners.
Email to: [email protected] or [email protected]
Email Template:
Dear Sir/Madam:
As a Samsung customer, and an owner of the Samsung Note 4, I am disappointed to know that this phone does not have the Theme Engine that the SG6 has. After spending $[INSERT PRICE OF PHONE] on this current Flagship phone from [INSERT CARRIER,] I discovered that this does not have the Theme Engine that the SG6 has. They are equally priced and are equally current Samsung Flagship phones, so I'm quite disappointed that Samsung has still not pushed the Theme Engine to the Note 4.
The Lollipop update to my Note 4 contains design/style/color elements that I do not like and currently have no ability to change. With the Theme Engine update, I will be able to change that and customize the Note 4 to my preference.
My request is to please update Note 4 owners with the same Theme Engine as the SG6. They are both current Flagship phones, and deserve this customization update.
Thank you,
[Your Name]
I wouldn't mind if they charged for themes
I'm hoping it will come with the 5.1.1 update, guess we have to be a bit more patient :crying: ; I can't wait to change even more from the stock touchwiz look:crying:

I honestly don't think it will unless enough people complain and request it from Samsung.
I really believe that if not enough people do complain/request it, the SG6 Theme Engine will only be applied to the Note 5.
As Samsung either:
1. Will not know that Note 4 users want it.
2. Will not know that Note 4 users are interested in it.
3. They do know but not enough pressure is being applied on them to actually implement it on the Note 4.
So.....it will just be another selling point for the Note 5 for new buyers (as it is for the SG6), as $crew you, you already own the Note 4, why should we bother giving you that.
Until enough hell is raised over at Samsung from Note 4 owners, I don't think Note 4 users will get this.
Again, I'd suggest copy/paste and modify the email template I wrote above in this thread to ask them for it.

I stay in the Vibrant section, but was hoping others could help the cause.
I generally remain calm and try and remain upbeat and defend... but the news (rumor/leak) about Samsung holding off the froyo release to sell more phones set me over the edge.
While nothing is confirmed, I still believe Samsung needs to be aware of just how pissed they are making our community. I'm not talking stupid class action, blah blah... I simply want our voice heard, and for a Froyo release to happen ASAP... but beyond that, I want them to adhere to the Open Handset Alliance and release their source for our developers.

I believe we all now who is going to put out a better product, and right now they (our developers) are handicapped because they do not have everything they need.
That said, we need to be organized!
We need twitter to trend.
To do that, we all need to use the same #hashtag. We also need to threaten something that means something to them... the whole problem is they are not updating to help with their sales (allegedly). Well, we need to threaten to never buy Samsung again.
Please use this #Hashtag:
#NeverAgain
would work.... it is easy to use, short and to the point.
An example: (just copy/paste this if you like)
[email protected] I will never buy a Samsung product after the way you've treated your customers. #NeverAgain

Haha. Did you see they just said they plan on selling 60 million handsets in 2011? I had to tweet back to them myself on that one. I said good luck since about 50% of power users won't ever buy another samsung after the failures with the Galaxy S.
Thanks for the crosspost from the vibrant forum, I wouldn't have seen it otherwise, so I hope the mods don't remove it.
I set up a twitter account just to complain to Samsung. They should be embarrassed over this. They and Sprint should fire all their devs and hire the folks here. It's ridiculous what is accomplished here by the developers working without full resources or a paycheck compared to what Samsung gets accomplished. It's amateur hour over there.
Tweeted!!! I'm with this movement all the way. Never again will I buy another Samsung phone.
Done and done. Thanks for getting this movement started, power to the people!

Thanks man, I felt bad because I did it and THEN thought to myself, shoot... this breaks an XDA rule. I hope that XDA will have a bit of leniency for this isolated event. That said, I certainly would understand if they did close it... sad but I did break a rule.
Our developers need their source!
I also want to add GalaxySSupport to complain to on twitter. It is the support twitter feed for all of the US Galaxy S variants.

Don't be so sure of that. A smaller website maybe, but one like xda that reaches so many people, its possible to scare them enough to believe we can effect their sales. Its energy better spent than posting over and over speculating about froyo so it also serves a two fold purpose. Overall I'm behind this.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Done as well.
Man, i hope that rumor isn't true..
Did my part. I hope Samsung listens. They make great phones but need to step away from using an open source platform to maximize how much money they coul make by leaving their existing phone users to die.
I agree with everyone that says the hardware is great, but I just can't stand the fact that Samsung is so slow to update to froyo even after all the complaints. There isn't any sort of support for this phone. Also, the fact they can't promise 2.3 (Gingerbread), as LG has done on the Optimus, even though they were able to put 2.3 on a Nexus S which basically has the same hardware is ridiculous.
You can tell me that I should just root and stop whining but that doesn't solve the problem. It's the principle. I feel like people are just sitting back and saying that the corporations will do what they want to do, which is to look only at short term profits (based on the article on AndroidSpin). If we can affect their bottom line through bad reviews of their products and petitions such as this one I'm sure they'll listen.
Also, if we just sit back and do nothing they'll just do it again and again. The reason for the "whining" is not for the sake of just whining, I just personally want to have the best android platform we can get.
In addition, isn't it just easier for everyone (rooted and not rooted) if we got the upgrade from Samsung directly? So why not try to make our lives easier.
That's why I'm all for this. Just my two cents.
Also, I would suggest people write poor reviews on places like CNET where less "techy" people might read reviews on cellphones before making purchases.
dont think this is going to work because with twitter they haev the same canned response everytime its mentioned , someone needs to reach the higher ups like super management somehow. let them know how unhappy everyone is
Whuts do we need to post on Samsung site? I honestly post sumthing to them daily about dropping the ball on froyo n galaxy
They responded to me w the bull ish Re they sent to everybody about froyo due to the complexity whutever lol

Done and done.
I wish HTC had invented the super amoled and bought intrinsity instead of samsung. After hearing about all these "new" galaxys s phones being released I can only hope that if and when the froyo source is released it will give devs the code they need for porting 2.3 and beyond. I hope people realize they shouldn't buy these phones and the new galaxy s sales plummet to hell.
I don't use twitter, so I can't post but I do hope this movement is successful in getting samsung to wake up.
I just posted a "tip" link to the Vibrant article on Engadget. The whole Galaxy S Froyo update has been a running joke there, so hopefully they will pick up on this latest news.
Apple with every launch of a new IOS version, its features are replicated from 3GS to latest Ipad.
Whenever Samsung launches a new TW it completely forgets the past, breaks android evolution (ex. ICS in SI), most likely won't update TW in SII (and forgot to fix camera firmware issues), most software innovations (crap or not) in SIII are not followed through older gen.
Most likely leaving the "dirty" work for developers to clean Samsung mess.
This alone is probably the strongest selling point of Apple, which looks after older models.
What's your feedback on this? Shouldn't we demand more from Samsung?
a few things..
1) whats your point?
2) you compare a launcher/UI to a whole OS
3) what are you complaining about?
Youre in a great community here. and when the time comes (of this yet to be released device..) there are a few people who will gladly pick that work up I believe..
4) dont think this can be a serious discussion without flaming.. so I guess this will be closed shortly..
This is an android forum and noone gives a rat's ass about iphones.
Theyre overpriced, ugly and terribly limited devices.
Close this thread please.

You of all people should know they won't because you just installed JW5 on your S1 didn't you.
You received selected android 4.0 features and s2 additions on a i9000 2.3.6 rom. This is as good as it gets. Look at other manufacturers like sony or motorola or htc. None of them give you these kind of benefits.
The i9000 and i9100 are extremely popular and very very successful devices. No wonder they keep pushing updates for them. Be glad of what you have. I own multiple devices, S1 and S2 included, and both of them are definitely my favorites.
They are free and open, they have great displays, looks, sdcard slots. Performance wise they basically declass every other phone including my gnex which fails miserably in that aspect. Everything from the launcher, browser through games and calculation heavy applications run great.
In addition, Apple could give a rat's ass about older models. They'll give them enough to keep most complaints at bay but otherwise, they want your fresh earned money for the newer stuff. Siri ring a bell?
Thanks for your opinion, of which I agree to almost everything.
This thread should be closed, don't know exactly what was in my mind.
this forum is full of hysteric overreacting wenches on steroids ..

General stuff to general thread
Samsung is planning S IV to roll out in April 2013 possibly with unbreakble screen. Other features 13 mp camera picture density 441 ppi.(times of India Banaglore edition dated 7Dec2012, page18). So Note 3 may roll out in 4th quarter 2013 for which I am waiting, by that time my note 1 will be around 2 years old and I could willfully sell or give it to a family member. I think most of you will do the same thing, I shall catch up you guys there.

I think I'm gonna jump ship to the Sony Xperia Yuga,if it comes out......with cyanogenmod leaving the Galaxy and Note lines(unless Sammy decides to scrap the Exynos SoC.....which,lets face it, is not gonna happen) and Sony offering full GPL compliance(read: almost all source code is released), I'm thinking about the Yuga.
Doesn't matter about the S-Pen, don't use it anyways; just bought the phone for the screen size and a .3" decrease doesn't seem that much different to me.

Brickbug, no source code released despite numerous promises, CM team moving out of Samsuck development.
While we all (read I) appreciate what the CM team and team Hacksung may have done, lets face it, they are a minuscule minority to Samsung. CM also does not offer anything revolutionary over what a standard device can do, (OK, so maybe the code and is cleaner and there's less bloat, but its just as easy to remove the bloat from TW), and in terms of the Galaxy note, it actually takes away some of the most useful parts.
99% of users never even root their devices, and for them, the Brickbug does not exist and never has.
It's hardly a good reason to never use another Samsung device...Especially since they really are ahead of the curve at this point.
Just my opinion.

The simple fact is we arent part of the 99% that never root their phones. We are the ones who enjoy the freedom of customizing every little aspect and squeezing every ounze of performance out. Some (like myself) can't stand touchjizz and to say that cm doesn't offer anything revolutionary is plain ignorant. The fact that Samsung isn't keeping the promises they make and continues to string us along is disgusting. I was a Samsung fanboy for years but after this ordeal I won't be buying another Samsung phone until they get their act together. Maybe cm is a miniscule minority to Samsung but there are still thousands of us who come here, to xda, to tweak, tinker and get the most out of our devices and cyanogenmod plays an enormous role in that. As xda members we look for devices with dev support, you can have the most high end phone in the world but if the devs aren't given what they need from the manufacturers then what's the point in even being here? You might as well become an iSheep. I am another who will be picking up a Sony yuga unless Samsung has their **** sorted by the time they release the gs4. For a company that's fighting apple as much as Samsung is they're starting to look more and more like them every day

Like you said. Every odd number note is best to buy Like note1, note3, note5 so on...
Probably going to skip Samsung next time if Sony will continue their pro-development policy with Xperia Yuga phone. Don't get me wrong, CM10 runs great on my Note, but it's not nice to know some bugs will probably never be fixed because Samsung didnt keep their promise about releasing sources AGAIN. And since i hate TW-based roms, i can't stick with stock.
Anyway, Sony's TimeScape ( is this what it's called ? ) Android mod is probably the best non-aosp android build...
Well Samsung works for me. I had to root GS2 for regional font support and print screen. In GNote, I ran stock unrooted for 6 months as all that I needed were already there. Then I started exploring and flashed several ROMs. Some which are closest to Nexus version have everything in white background (eye straining). Some do not support SPen. Some had more annoying bugs than Samsung stock. So finally back to stock TW and TW is blessing. If I buy Galaxy Nexus, I will want to flash TW. When OS starts to reach maturity, having latest OS is not always required on the first day. For example - we can almost run everything in Windows XP, the same has started to hold true in Android too. And SPen is blessing, it has saved me borrowing pen from waiter and draw quick diagrams on tissue paper dozen times.

I'm waiting for Durex 4 to be delivered.
Refering to TheNextWeb
W’ve already seen leaks suggesting that Samsung is preparing a significant overhaul for TouchWiz, the user interface on its Android devices, and now the company has teased a set of new, streamlined and circular icons for it.
This teaser posted to Samsung’s blog and social media accounts shows a simplified set of icons which have been added to the media invitation for its Unpacked 5 event, where it seems likely the Galaxy S5 will be unveiled. The fitness and lifestyle icons may also be a nod to the Google Now-style alerts that last month’s leak suggested would arrive in TouchWiz.
Samsung hints at TouchWiz redesign with the latest teaser for its Unpacked 5 event
The event takes place in less than two weeks, so there’s not long to wait. TNW will be ring-side in Barcelona to bring you the latest as soon as it is announced.
Seems that Samsung is going to introduce new set of apps and some change in their icons pack
What is your opinion??
My opinion is that whatever they are doing, I won't be able to install it on my Galaxy s4 or note 10.1 2014 because they are idiots.

It doesn't matter what cosmetic changes they do, i've never spent more than a day using stock launchers on any Android tablet or phone i've ever owned from any manufacturer.
I've never seen anyone say anything favorable about Touchwiz. I just don't understand why they put so much time and effort into something no one likes. It looks like they brought in the designers from Windows XP. We would all get updates a lot faster if they just let Touchwiz die.

The reason TW exists is the same reason all OEM's offer overlays or unique features (EG: LG=Knock on, rear controls, HTC=BlinkFeed, BoomSound, Sony=unlimited content, waterproof, "G" cameras); they don't want to end up all looking the same and being Google's hardware-providing *****-slaves to their search marketing and content sales empire where all the money's made.
The last OS distribution report Google put out has 4.4 at 1.8% of deployed devices. That includes the N4, N5, N7, and N7-13 which are the highest selling Nexus devices. If you assume that at least 75% of Nexus owners upgraded to 4.4 as soon as they got the chance that means of the entire universe of Android devices less than 2.5% are "pure" by design; meaning people sought out Nexus because of its purity and even some of those may have chosen Nexus based on price. There's a reason there are rumors that Google may be exiting the Nexus business and moving to a "Play Edition" hardware model instead and why they took a loss on the sale of Motorola.
The answer to why TW and overlays exist is in what the other 97.5% of smartphone shoppers are buying and why. Here's a clue. 900MM smartphones were sold last year. There are 5.5M XDA members. What "enthusiasts" want doesn't necessarily reflect on the masses. And Samsung (53%) and Apple (56%) made 109% of mobile device profits last year. The number's greater than 100% because all the rest (including Google/Nexus/Motorola) lost money. So I wouldn't expect Samsung to dump their proprietary market-differentiating s/w anytime soon in spite of the single unsubstantiated rumor being spread by re/code that's been picked up Internet-wide. The tease of TW changes in the SGS5 Unpacked invitation and M-UX on the Pro tablets certainly don't indicate any change in Samsung's direction. And why would they change? Their making money and gaining market share (their margin dropped because the high-end's maturing but so did Apple's).
Personally, I like and use some of Samsung's unique s/w features and choose their devices because of them. I'm in this forum because of S Pen, S Note, and Multi View. Others, to your point, maybe not so much. People should buy what makes them happy but Android "purists" buying Samsung devices, especially the s/w heavy Note-series, and then complaining about it after the fact doesn't make a lot of sense. Perhaps lobbying Google to make a 10.1" Nexus "Note" with a pen and active digitizer would be time better spent.
You can see the return ui in the Note pro.

Many of us are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Oreo to our beloved Note 5 and it's on it's way. There is already an early beta build of it for the S6 based on a new branch of LOS15 I believe. It still has a few bugs but it's bootable a few things don't yet work but the basic's are there. It can only be a matter of time before a Note 5 dev picks it up and creates a build for us.
Have patience guys we should be enjoying a little Oreo goodness soon.

I read on samobile that the note 5 isn't getting Android 8.
Sent from my GT-N5120 using Tapatalk
No word officially from Samsung yet but it is likely that Samobile is correct and we wont be getting an Oreo upgrade from Samsung. While that is very disappointing it's not the end of the road for the Note 5. I'm sure there will be rom's ported from devices that do get upgrades and source built rom's too. Samsung does not care about us but luckily for us XDA has teams of talented developers who do care. One way or other we will be enjoying Oreo goodness we just need to be patient till it happens.

Note 5 already gone through two major OS update. so if not mistaken, we will miss the Oreo update. Our only hope is custom rom porting.

8.0 is a big deal (compared to prev updates) battery wise, Data and managing apps is much better.
My main thing is the battery which has almost doubled, specially on standby bringing new life to this old phone I didn't care for
Anyone else bothered that a barely 2 year old phone is getting ditched by Samsung? Are we going to just accept companies obsoleting phones after 2 years? I'm not one for ROMs and rooting really so I don't want to hear about how Oreo is coming in that sense to the Note 5. Samsung should put Oreo together and release it for the Note 5. And if they can't then I'm not buying Samsung anymore. I don't care if they don't care. Phones should have a minimum of 5 year support at least for security updates. No reason why the Note 5 can't handle Oreo.

I agree whole heartedly with what your saying there phones n tablets etc should get more than 2 years support before being abandoned. The Note 5 is more than capable of running Oreo without a problem. But sadly Samsung will never give it to us we will now only get security updates no further OS updates.
Samsung's short sighted view is if u want the latest android OS buy a new phone every 2 years to get it. Yes I know they are in the business to make money but seriously they need to understand that us regular customers can't afford to replace perfectly good devices every couple of years and their corporate customers are unlikely to do so either.
I read somewhere that Samsung wants to get more of the corporate and government contracts that Apple enjoys for themselves and become as rich as Apple.
But Apple not only has nice hardware and the security that corporations and governments want they also support their devices for 4-5 years and that is a big factor in that market as well as the consumer market.
Until the high up's in Samsung grasp that concept and treat all it's customers better they will never have as much success as Apple enjoys. They seem content with things as they are and not caring a damn how many customers they upset and cause to stop buying their products because for every customer who leaves them there are millions more to replace them. The concept of gaining more customers while keeping existing customers happy by treating them right seems to be an alien concept to Samsung. Their attitude is we WILL do whatever we want in the pursuit of profit and to hell with those who don't like it there are many more to replace you.
I too have decided that I am no longer prepared to be treated like this by Samsung and my Note 5 will be the last product of theirs i buy. The sad thing is they build great hardware but their attitude towards customers seriously sucks and their short sighted profit model is unlikely to change any time soon.

Funny you should pick on Samsung out of all of the Android manufacturers; nearly all of them support their devices for only two years, even Google. So before you start complaining about how profit-greedy a company is, just remember that the company that *owns* Android doesn't even care to offer support for older devices. Also laughable that Google should make fun of Apple for ditching the headphone jack and look what they're doing with the Pixel 2. Pick a manufacturer, any manufacturer. You're not going to get the support you're looking for unless you switch to Apple.

You are correct most manufacturers do the same things but Samsung has reached the position of being the largest supplier of android phones on the planet and from that position of strength they lead and influence all the smaller players bellow them. If Samsung began to change it's attitude towards customers and treated them better then many of the smaller players would follow.
As for Google they don't make hardware only software the phones bearing the Google name are made by other phone manufacturers and again it's those manufacturers who dictate and control how long a phone is supported. Now Google could use it's licencing muscle to make the manufacturers behave better towards their customers and give better support but I don't know why they don't.
Android is open source true but the Android logo and Android OS version logo's are not they are copyright of Google and if any manufacturer wants to sell a phone with android on it they must comply with licencing terms and conditions set by Google. Now some of those conditions could be that manufacturers must give better support and for longer or that they must make available to the development communities the information needed to carry on support when the manufacturer no longer wants to do so. They could release information on things like drivers needed to interface with the hardware or better compatibility with the SOC's. No one is asking for the source codes to their whiz bang UI skins many don't like them and we certainly don't need them.
Google could use their position to make things better for everyone but I really don't know why they don't.

I know you're not talking directly to me but the reason I chimed in on this thread is because I have a Samsung. I've also had LG too and they're in the same boat with not updating their phones. Also One Plus and Motorola. I call all of them out but particularly focused on Samsung since I own a Note 5. That's all.
Yeah it sucks..I own a note 8... Really it's not a big update. They made a great phone with the note 5.

Dang really? Note 8 looks awesome. You're saying I'm not missing much by having a 5 still?
It's a nice phone. But the camera isn't better.. The front camera is worse in my opinion. Good screen and the size isn't much different. Slimmer but taller. Speed wise they are the same. Note 5 is just as snappy and fluid as the note 8

No doubt there will be a build but it's no good if you're using the tap and pay option
