It takes a few chops to get mine to work...its not very consistent.
I thought the same thing but it was just my technique. I was doing it much slower than needed. Now that I do the double chop quickly and with more force, it works every time. I'm not sure if you are doing it the same was I was. Try to do it faster. IBthatswhatshesaid.

This.
Be careful with your phone, better safe than sorry
The trick is to keep the phone in your hand level, and not 'dip' the phone down as you chop. Literally imagine you are karate chopping a piece of wood - you would keep your hand vertical as you did it. Took me a few goes to realize, and a few mis-opens of the camera app. I was like 'noooo moto, what are you doing' as my wife laughs at me.
I have a hard time activating it too.... You have to hold it completely straight up and down and not rotate it at all when "chopping" it. I get it to work about 30% of the time. I'm sure after I do it (a lot), I'll get the hang of it.
Just like some phones that have "Double tap to wake", they usually take me a few weeks to get it down......Then it's 2nd nature.
@zombicidal maniac - NICE avatar!
I can see it now...keys get dropped on the CONCRETE driveway in the dark...chop-chop and the phone smashes WITH ADDED FORCE right on the driveway...the horrible sound of glass breaking, and metal crunching, and that sickening sound of the whole unit bouncing and sliding under the car.
No thanks...I will use an easier (safer) way to turn on the flashlight! :cyclops:

I finally got it right. What was throwing me for a loop was the animation on the activation page. If you chop at the pace shown, it will NOT activate the flash light. You have to chop faster. Just my observation.
When you chop your phone does it sound like something is loose in there? Mine does, it is also sounds like something is loose when it vibrates. Hopefully you guys experience the same thing.
I have to chop super fast and multiple times, so much easier to turn it on manually.
Chopping downward with the phone vertical is heavily inconsistent. What I've found is almost always reliable is doing a chop sideways with the phone horizontal (screen facing upward). Give it a try.

Confirm it is not a loose battery. Put a thin piece of cardboard between the battery and back cover and try it. This used to happen when I used the extended battery and cover.

If it is worn it is worn. Try the small piece of thin cardboard like from a matchbook cover and put it between the battery and cover dead center and snap it closed. Should keep it there. You could try with tweezers to pull the contacts out a little but don't recommend messing with those.
Whatever you do don't use glue. You might be tempted but don't. You never know when you need to do a battery pull....

Loose batteries are seeming to be come more and more common in the Epics. I bet if you set your phone down a little too hard it'll shut off too, right?
Mine did this. Confirmed it was a loose battery. Placed some folded paper between the battery and the bottom of the phone (not the end with the battery contacts) in the battery well. Never again had the problem.

I have had this problem on my Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2 and my Epic. Every time it has turned out to be fixed easily by cleaning the battery connections with a pencil eraser. After time, the batteries gain a film of corrosion. This my or not be the problem that has plagued your phone but, it is worth considering for anyone else who runs into this symptom.

Maybe there are some quality control issues with the button. Mine is rock solid. It barely wiggles, and makes a satisfying click sound. WAY better than the home button I had on my iPhone 4.
Now I've got rid of Touchwiz, that home button is the only fly in the ointment. The capacitive one on my DHD was so much nicer. Hopefully Samsung won't feel the need to continue copying this pointless feature of the iphone on any future phones.

My button's sideways shift is immeasurably small.. I'd guess 0.2 at the very most, only just enough to allow room for not pressing the centre... the click is a nice muted reassurance of interaction.

Thinking about the N4 as a secondary phone but I played with one in the T-Mobile store and noticed that pinch to zoom seemed to be pretty unresponsive and disappointing and that's putting it lightly. When pinching to zoom it felt as if I was moving my fingers through quick sand. It was as if my fingers had to literally transverse half of the entire screen before the phone started to react. Can anyone else confirm this? Like I said, this will be my secondary phone and my primary will be an iPhone 5 so I will going back and forth between the 2 phones often which will make the poor responsiveness even more noticeable and bloody annoying since the iPhone is very responsive and accurate in this department. So now I'm rethinking my purchase of this phone. Again can anyone confirm this??? Thanks
mine doesn't do this. it is very responsive.. are you talking about having to go out farther when zooming in? i think they designed the zoom in to occur after your fingers have spread over a certain distance so you don't accidentally zoom in when you don't mean to.
Its like people are just finding reason not to buy this phone cause it has real issues or they just like to complain....personal I think your all crazy . My coworker got his nexus 4 last week and its ****ing awesome the camera in HDR mode is amazing the data speeds are top notch and the screen is responsive. I don't know it everyone and there mama was playing with the display phone at T-Mobile ,but here a story I was playing with a Gs3 at T-Mobile and found pictures of a girls ***** on it .

There was another thread on this yesterday - this is actually Google almost certainly designing around someone else's patent on touchscreen usage. They probably figured that what was going on in older versions was too close to Apple's or someone else's precise method for interpreting multitouch input, so they designed something effective but different enough to avoid litigation. There's a reason why neither Apple nor Microsoft have sued Google directly over Android - Google designs around patents pretty well.

I hear ya, but even still it'd pretty annoying and making me think before I buy. Honestly I'm a stock app kinda guy. I like the stock apps, I actually want to use Chrome but I can't, I want to use the stock gallery since it would be more integrated but I can't without this bug/feature this will also make using Google maps bloody annoying more than anything as when using maps there is a lot of zooming in and out. I'm wondering if other ROMs have this issue with the N4 or not.... Hmmm... That would be an indicator if there was more of a real issue/hardware level issue or not. Wondering if Cyanogen, Paranoid, or AOKP would have the same issue...
this is such a moot issue based completely on software filtering/calibration of your touches. Capacitors are hyper sensitive to touches, so much so that you have to tone it down and filter out all the noise... You can easily go into the software and figure out where the pinch-zoom controls are and fix them...
I am running codefireX's build and my pinch to zoom works perfectly in gallery, chrome, maps, camera. Registers my touch input no mater what I try.
If this is a deal breaker for you, I would be more worried about thermal throttling issues tbh... Those are actually hardware related.

So you're saying right out of the box you can go into settings and configure pin h to zoom to react immediately rather than after transversing half the screen before it starts reacting?

Has anyone noticed that the screen on this phone is way too sensitive? Mine goes as far as to register a touch when I hold my finger a few millimeters away. This results in accidental double presses and is very frustrating especially when typing. I even made sure the high sensitivity setting was off.
When in Camera mode, it even snaps photos by itself without my finger anywhere near the shutter button.
Any tips?

As stated in OP I had made sure that the hi sensitivity option is off as well as any other convenience features.
As for the camera, I have been in windy conditions when this was occurring, so maybe it was thinking I was giving voice commands. But I had all of that turned off as well, so I'm not sure what the deal is.
I will probably revert to factory settings again before returning the phone to make sure it's not a software issue.
I think that Samsung went a little overboard with the touchscreen on this phone. I do not like the fact that everything can be used to touch the screen. What I actually liked about my iPhone 4s was that it was picky about only recognizing fingertip touches.
Great phone overall but this issue sadly ruins it for me. I do not want to go back to iOS so I think HTC One is the only other strong competitor.

Make sure you have the setting checked. Also it wont alert you unless the screen is off.
The screen must be off and it also used the phone as a pedometer so you can test it by taking the pen out, turn the screen off and tap the phone on the floor.

I just looked at this setting, and realized that I didn't turn it on.
It's not a function of distance from the phone, but more the number of 'steps' the phone counts when the screen is off.
I had the pen right next to my phone and shook it like a Polaroid picture. Eventually I got a strong buzzing notification.
Cool stuff!
