switch from TouchWiz to Cyanogenmod - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What features will my Galaxy S5 be missing if I switch from TouchWiz to Cyanogenmod?

I spent about 25 mins thinking of what I have been missing, and still cant think of anything.
The pro's is getting rid of all that bloatware, constantly updated nightly's, speed, speed and more speed.
OH... i think the fingerprint sensor doesnt work on CM.

look here bro http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/q/fingerprint

awesome, thanks man. I havent bothered with it for ages. The fingerprint scanner isnt the most important feature of the phone for me.

[Q] Stock is way too laggy but I want its features

Okay, so I'm looking for a little input here because I am torn. I was an avid flasher and supporter of the AOSP ROMs until I got this phone. I used CM and PA and a few others just to see what I liked but none of them offered quite the features and stability of pure stock but this is where I am really struggling.
For the longest time this phone was super fast. It did what I wanted it to do when I wanted it to do it. I'm not much for the keyboard so I installed swype and that seems to be where my problems began. Since day 1 the messaging app was always a disappointment. It would lag, not open fast or when it did open in a message i would have to close it to get to the messages list. When I added swype to the mix it just sucked. The touch responsiveness was late and slow, a lot of times the keyboard would freeze up and i wouldn't be able to do anything for a minute until it would unfreeze. I just don't see why it's doing this because it has 2 gb of ram and a beast processor.
Anything you guys could add to help? I love the phone but it's getting to be about as slow to use as the Droid Eris
Pretty sure this thread is supposed to be in the Q&A section. Don't be surprised to see it closed. Regarding your issue, to say your G2 is as slow as the Eris is a bit of a stretch. I don't doubt you're experiencing some lag, but saying it's as slow as a phone with 288MB RAM and clocked at 528 MHz is a little ridiculous.
You say you encountered these problems after installing Swype. Perhaps get rid of that keyboard. I personally use the stock Google keyboard as it can be downloaded from the Play Store.
And seeing as you're rooted, perhaps look through the development section for your particular variant to see if there are any optimized stock-based ROMs that might help speed things up.
Flex rom + g.lewarne kernel.
More feature and faster
What stock features? IR Blaster and Camera are available. Knock wake works.
I only used stock about 24 hours, but I didn't see much else compelling.. Quick Slide? Ugh. Quick Apps or whatever? Useless. Navbar customization? CM or AOKP can do that, etc.
If u have lag on stock, use a task killer to clear RAM when screen is turned off... Also root and use the fstrim app to TRIM your G2.... Mine never lags after this...

its pretty much android that is lagging. not much you can do about it.

I feel as though I shouldn't have to clear ram considering there is 2GB of it.
And even though there is that much ram shouldn't android manage that in the background.
I do realize that TRIM isn't implemented in android until 4.3 but still...

It's more or less the camera that I really want. The aosp one is so minimalistic and lacking features but all of the ported lg cameras have features that don't work or are baked out of it to make it work. I also really enjoy knowing my phone can work 100% of the time without SOD's and no GPS (I do a lot of traveling in my free time). I need to know that if I am stranded in a town I don't know of I can pull out my G2 and call someone without any feedback or echoes and no drops in data

So the one feature you want, stock camera, works fine in other ROMs. I believe there is a few things disabled in it but not much. Here's the list from the stock camera thread:
No Object Tracking. You know that thing where a grid of little boxes shows up on the screen and one of them will turn green as the camera focuses? That's missing.
No Audio Zoom. It's still enabled in the UI, but I've patched out all the methods relating to it, as they caused crashes.
No transparent navigation bar.
No rotating navigation buttons.
Performance tuning - it's possible that this will run slower than it would on an LG ROM. The LG rom includes a class called
(Not on the list on the thread) - Front-facing camera may or may not work
So yeah, object tracking is really the only functional change. Autofocus works fine, just not the little green boxes. Whatever the difference is. And avoid using the front camera.
AOSP camera is minimalistic, but what features are missing? Do you really need 10 scene modes? No. Let's be realistic, the AOSP camera isn't doing well with low light or close-up flash (blows the photo) so there are problems but overall it works okay. And the ported stock camera works fine except for one minor feature.
GPS works, no call echos, no drops, no SODs etc.. I have had none of these issues on AOKP. GPS there are libraries missing from the AOKP build, but the files to flash are right in the OP. Stock camera, Quick Remote, etc all works fine too. I can't speak for any other ROMs. Rohan32's AOKP 4.3 is the ROM I'm using.
Uninstall Swype (I and other people I know have lag issues with it eventually), use the Google keyboard. Use Nova Launcher (Nova Prime would be ideal) set animations there for very fast or off, install Screen off and Lock for Knock off feature and set it with the Double tap gesture in Nova. Install LagFix for TRIM and run it. Go to developer options and turn off all animations. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I don't have mine rooted because I want to keep stock full stock. But what I have found is that clearing the ram after shutting off the screen actually helps a lot. I have had much less lag since I did that.
Something funny happened today. I went into texts and set the auto delete to after 1000 texts. Talk about the problems that followed. My phone was completely worthless. Even after closing the app and then restarting the phone. I have over 5k texts in one conversation between my girlfriend and I so I thought that might be making the stock messaging app run slow. But the auto delete didn't work at all. After spending about 3 hours trying to get back into the app I had to turn it off before I could do anything...

if you root you don't actually lose any features you just "unlock" the phone to get extras. the only time you can lose features is when you flash a custom rom. even if you flash a kernel you don't lose anything.

Oh believe me I am fully aware of what rooting and flashing Roms and kernels does to my phone. I've been an avid android user for a while. I have been flashing since the eris but on this phone I always end up back at stock but I always lose info when I revert back to stock. I don't want to flash anymore. I just want my flagship phone to work like it was worth my money
Changing to row and interactive got rid of the very tiny bit of stutter I had once and a while. The "lag" is really just the the CPU waiting on the system to tell it to clock up. Stock profiles are too slow.

N9005 android 5.0 L disappointment

Hey guys. Just installed android 5.0 on my N9005 32gb and although it works fine, haven't really found any bugs, there are things that annoy me. Firstly, even on L, I seem to still be on Dalvik Cache with no option to turn on ART (not even in developer options). Secondly, running it on UK, yet I do not have my keyboard symbols...rather unpleasant for me, to be honest.
Many things that were expected to have been in L i seem to not have ( seriously, still just ripple and watercolour lockscreens only?!)... i dont know, maybe I had too high expectations for it. But right now, especially without Xposed, i am not really impressed. What about your thoughts?
for me

im disappointing a little because samsung didnt update note 3 camera with s5 i like the fast focus and faster processing which s5 camera software have - i dont care about those gimmik selective focus or slow motion or whatever / the multi window seems not support all apps i tried install application which make all apps supported but nothing happen same thing happen to the pen window / i hate smart select in newer air command when i select a video it takes it as image not video like scarpbook was doing now i have to share link to scrapbook .
what i like =
my note become really fast and premium cause i love those white menu everywhere / they didnt make the button like s5 so we still get the menu button like note 3 / my magazine is still like note 3 instead of bad s5 or note 4 gimmik you just swipe up to open magazine / newer touchwiz launcher
so i feel like i dont want to downgrade samsung make a good move this time
The multuwindow seems like its still work in progress... i really like the floating windows, but to me it doesnt seem like i have access to them so easily.
As for the "premium" white theme, that is, in my opinion, the dumbest, most counterproductive thing that Samsung could do. With their great AMOLED screens to put white stuff everywhere?! Seriously? White, which consumes our battery the most? Black menus, in my opinion, not only do they look better, but upon some tests on 4.4, they increased my battery a hell damn lot. I do love the good old MyMagazine though, gotta admit, but other than that, there are so many things that they either did not include, or they miserably failed with (again, still Dalvik, on LOLLIPOP?!).
I am, by all means, unimpressed and quite fisappointed by what touchwiz has done to Android L
so.. nobody read is a "UNOFICIAL" leaked ?, update for N9005 is in 02/2015.,
@ op holy ****, does running dalvik mean xposed can run? did you try?
I for one am very pleased with this update. It brought the note 4 pen features, pulling windows from the corner works great and makes things easier, recents looks awesome, animations are beatiful and minimalistic.
This is the best Samsung update yet, without a doubt. It's like the Samsung team hired totally different people for designing touch wiz. The color scheme could be better but it's definetly heading towards the right direction.
That, and the small amount of time it took them to make this update happen, is proof that Samsung are finally changing their policy. Looks like the small sales of the s5 this year woke them up.
Well, @lvnatic, you do make a pretty strong case
Lets just hope the final version will bring even more good stuff to it, and then a dev to make us a black/dark mod of it so my eyes won't hurt

[Q] How can I install 5.0 ?

Hey.
I have SM-N900 with 4.4.2 and rooted.
My phone start to be **** and work with lags so..... its for wipe and install the new update.
so I saw this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...s-android-development/mar-10-pekakas-t3051018
and he looking good and everything
but he say that I need to have 5.0 first to install it..
how ?
and why every dev hate the Exynos ? no love for him...
sometime I want to install CM but.... the pen will stop work and more
Just go here, http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N900/
Download a 5.0 ROM, and flash it via Odin. If you find a ROM for your region then obviously download that. Done. Then you can flash any custom ROM you want.
Why Exynos hate? Well I am an idiot and as far as I know devs need to spend quite a lot of more time developing for Exynos than Snapdragon, and obviously they choose to do the easier work.
And a friendly suggestion, please STAY AWAY from those AOSP based ROMs. They will make the phone half disabled, I am just coming from one just yesterday, and one more thing, they aren't that much smoother than TouhcWiz Lollipop either, which was my main reason to flash such a ROM, and literally waste a full two hour! Call it LagWiz, CrapWiz, BloatWiz, whatever the heck you want, I am not going anywhere near those AOSP things ever again.

ok I understand now how to install 5.0. thanks
but why to stay away from AOSP ?
I saw this " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYofb7zYrt4 " and his phone work great and fast also his pen work..
and what do you mean half disabled ? you talk about features of samsung ?
Seriously I can't stand my phone anymore with lags and full RAM use for unknown reason ( and even I use Greenify / Wanam / bootmanager )
still he work like crap and after restart he start to work good again for like... a few hours or days
man I really need to change
Well several number of reasons really. The deal breaker for me was there was no option to change the display mode! I mean I am talking about the different display profiles, Cinema, Adapt, Professional etc, I couldn't choose that, and I was stuck with the default Adaptive one, which is way too over saturated! Then there are the S Pen things, this and that software is there, but nothing could be as smooth as having Action Memo merged with S Note, on which I heavily depend. Then there is the camera, and the lack of 60 frames video. Also the camera photo quality in general, is it comparable to TouchWiz's stock camera? I doubt!
I was ready to compromise on all of these, but that lack of display profile thing was impossible for me to bear.
Honestly there is very minimal lag with TouchWiz 5.0, OF3, on my N9005. But I think bloody Samsung didn't implement the TW on Exynos as good as they did on SD devices, so maybe you indeed face some lag issues. I myself couldn't bear the KitKat or Jelly Bean or whatever the heck it was on my I9500, lag, bugs, what not, but TouchWiz Lollipop is an entirely different thing. I also don't see any low RAM issue at all!
In any case, if you want to try out some AOSP stuffs, do that, it's your phone after all...

For people like you that note with its bloatware is meant for, aosp based roms are never a thing for you.
When I bought note 3 i did it for its hardware specs and really hated tw. Never gonna back to that crap.
What you miss we others that love cm find a way to live better with than living with tw.
LOL I always see these things/debates posted of not using AOSP or TouchWiz... it's really a preference... but here's the thing, TW based phones are usually more stable. The only reason being is, they have less changes to the core of the OS. AND you don't have to use TW (at least not the slow ugly launcher). TW is crap, you can use another launcher and debloat - to have something purring. AOSP do something similar, but of course it's not as stable --- but this is more developer dependent. Some are better than others, some load it with their own bloat/crapwear (because they think it's what others will want).
In conclusion... lol make your own conclusion. Be sure to read the forums (not just first and last pages) for any problems on the rom you choose. I would highly recommend something that has minimal changes, but lets you add or remove what you want.
Good luck!

Let me be the judge of that. I will say whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want. Deal with that.
You are what, 24 now? Talk when you are in your mid 30s, maybe by then you could gain some IQ and be a little practical, and the hype/ brainwash adrenaline will settle down.

S7 Edge Questions

Hey all,
It's been a while since I left the Samsung flock and went back to Sony but this years new Xperia Line just isn't doing it for me and the S7 Edge has really grabbed me. I'm getting it in a few weeks and the amount of info to take on is staggering. I have figured out that the UK model is a differnet chip but similar enough in performance.
I didn't bother rooting my Xperias as it broke the camera, but coming back to Samsung I'm not sure I can deal with Touchwiz again. I rooted my S2 and S3 in almost no time and installed stock or Cyanogen most of the time. My recollections of touchwiz are not great, and Sony ran pretty close to Stock/Vanilla.
So my questions:
Is touchwiz any better now?
Do I need touchwiz for the edge functionality?
Does rooting/rom installing still cause the counter (I forget it's name) to go up? Or have Sammy finally got rid of that. I don't want to lose my warrenty in a matter of days lol
Any other roms have edge functionality
Are Sammy faster with updates these days? I used to go mad waiting for them to catch up!
Sorry for the list of noob questions but it's been a while and I was getting lost in all the threads!
You do not need TouchWiz to use Edge functions. I use Nova launcher and it's working perfectly.
If you like to flash with ODIN, then you have every week an update to flash.
Updates are faster and it has been this way for 3 months now

Brilliant!
Rooting will almost certainly invalidate any warranty. You will also not be able to use samsung pay or nfc.
Touch whizz is not as bad as some folks let on about. It's usually persistent rooters that like nothing more than to play with phone settings all day, every day. Call them obsessives if you want .
Besides, ' ... a few weeks' as you put it is a lifetime in mobile phone terms. There will be an influx of new models by then and the S7 (and other current phones) will be museum pieces : -)
touch wiz has improved a lot from a while back. lag factor isn't really a issue these days. not saying it won't ever lag, any phone can even a iphone. but as far as edge functions u will need a touch wiz based rom if you are rooting i would think because it is part of touchwiz. 3rd party launchers will help u if u really don't want to look at touch wiz but it still needs to be there if that makes sense
as far as updates it isn't all that bad. i know on my note 5 i got mm on my sprint version before other carriers. so that has something to do with it too
This is my first Galaxy since the S2 and IMO Touchwiz is alot better than the iterations that I seen on previous friend's phones.
That said if you do take the plunge and end up not being satisfied with TW I recommend downloading the Good Lock app in the Galaxy store. Pretty much gets rid of TW and moves towards a clean android stock take on the notification drawer.
Good to hear, I recall touchwiz being a laggy mess and so far from the comfort of cyanogen etc.
Thanks all!
Think I won't root, but I might strip out some of the bloatware etc.

No point. Few if any are resource hoggers. Better make sure you only have apps like Facebook active when you are actually using them. They, unlike most bloatware, really can have an impact on battery.

What ROM should I use and a question about which S5 version?

Hey, I'm getting an S5.
I know this has been asked a ton of times, but I'm not sure if my decision is right. I want to use the phone mainly as a music player, but I do want to (if possible) use pretty much every feature there, such as the fingerprint sensor and maybe even the heart rate sensor. Could the fingerprint sensor be used as a button when not needed to unlock something?
I also want most, if not all of the camera quality there is. I'm currently considering the PhoeniX ROM as it seems to have everything I'm looking for.
But are there any alternatives?
Also, is it inherently bad if I get an unlocked version of a carrier S5, instead of a G900F?
I used lineage os for 5 months and I was fine except for the camera and the battery. now I use nemesis reborn from a few days but I feel great now I am waiting for lineage 15.1 stable. regards.
