Complete newb here, be compassionate please.
I have a NST with a dead region about 100 pixels high at the left bottom corner. So I tried to resize the screen to, say, 700x600 by editing the build.prop file or running the command
adb shell am display-size 700x600.
Editing build.prop had no visible effect and I get "display-size: not found" after running the adb command. I don't know if it has something to do with API level or anything. Like I said I am not a developer.
My problem in a nutshell is to by-pass that dead region on the screen. Open to any suggestions.
Edit: Just a friendly reminder "My problem in a nutshell is to by-pass that dead region on the screen." I am open to suggestions for this problem, shopping advice is not welcome.
You can try to repair the screen buying a new one, search it on Aliexpress. It's about 20$.

I welcome the info on replacement screens. It's a public forum.

First off let me say thanks to the many members that posted pieces of this fix for various Samsung phones.
The sole purpose of this post is to condense the info I found spread out across multiple threads when trying to resolve this issue myself. Hopefully making it easier for future users that may have the same problem I did. Which is why I have the various sensor names in the subject.
If your phone is having problems auto-rotating, or does not rotate at all in any app (like mine did). These steps should get you working again. This will be overkill in some cases but I like to cover all my bases when something is not working to begin with.
Note: This assumes you are running Android 2.2 (if you are not, you will not be able to perform the last step, but your phone should still work properly without it). Your phone will need to be rooted with busybox and you will need a terminal emulator app installed. I have attached the "Android Terminal Emulator" apk just in case you don't have or know what that is.
open your terminal type su press enter
type cd /data/system press enter
type rm ms3c_yamaha.cfg press enter
type cd /system/bin press enter
type ./sensorcalibutil_yamaha press enter
secure your phone on a flat level surface and gently press the enter key on your keyboard
type exit press enter
type exit press enter
Close your terminal and go to menu -> Display -> Horizantal calibration
turn your phone upside down with the bottom edge over hanging the table you used as a flat surface so that you can just barely see the calibration button when you are looking under the phone. Gently press the calibration button.
All done, you should be in working order!
Nice post! But the Epic does not require all of these steps that other phones might.(assuming your using Terminal Emulator)
Once within terminal, type
"su"
then you only need to type
"sensorcalibutil_yamaha" and press enter. Then follow the steps on the screen.
As far as hanging the bottom edge over the table goes, it's not necessary. The Epic is level on both ends because the camera protrudes at the other.
A couple of weeks ago, i had the problem where sensorcalibutil... in terminal emulator (and adb etc) was failing when trying to execute. Deleting the file above did fix this. So, maybe update the op to only try that if it fails. Thx for putting this together juise

Good point. I've never run into that issue myself, and I'm not sure what would cause it, but deleting that file would fix it.
Auto rotation.
Thanks for posting this. I was having this problem on my phone and now it's fixed!
Ahhh! This has finally fixed my auto-rotation issues! My phone has been unable to auto-rotate for months and now it works again. Thanks much!

Actually I needed to delete the cfg file with my Epic, so the need is there depending on the problem. This why I say in some cases this may be overkill, but it if you follow the instructions as posted no harm can come of completing all the steps I chose to list. As long as you don't have faulty hardware you should be back in business after completing them.
If my years with BSD/Linux have taught me anything, it's assume nothing! If you know *nix you'll notice that my commands assume nothing about the user environment. To me that is the safest way to provide instructions like these to users that may not be familiar with the OS.
Thank you for this consolidation... for noobies like me, searching all the forums can be a lil intimidating... this may be "overkill" like you said, but it sped up my auto-rotate like nobody's business. You get TWO thumbs up...

Good philosophy. I'm just currious as to why that file would get corrupted in the first place. Unless folks are trying to restore data from a froyo Rom onto an eclair rom, this should not be happening. The file resides on the data partition which would have been wiped durring the install process, assuming it was done correctly. Ha, there I go assuming again.

meh i guess it works. didnt really do anything though.
Is there a way to add more characters or change font SIZE for the personal message? I want mine to say more letters than they currently allow. I couldnt find any way to do it. Thanks in advance!
No, not going to happen, at least stock. maybe a dev can figure that out, I looked everywhere also.
Good luck.
I know there's no setting to change. This is a dev community, I was kimd of asking them. Thanks though.
Sorry to bump an old thread, But I was wondering if you found an answer to this? I am also looking to increase the character count. Seems very limited. I want a message that will inform potential thieves that may find my phone that their fingerprint has been captured and so has their face from front facing camera and has been uploaded to a server already and provide them with a contact number for return with a reward.
I mean if I picked up a phone and that was the first thing I read on a locked screen boy would I return it quick smart. I would return it anyway, as I know how valuable someones phone data can be to people.
I just want some of the less "legit" people around to follow the same protocol  as I would...and what better way to do this than with a subtle message that is "more encouraging"
Hello everybody
I have some doubts regarding what I have just done.
I have had a kindle keyboard for a few years and was very pleased with it. Unfortunately it broke and I had to think about a replacement.
I always had a good opinion of the nook e-reader and found out that the new kindles were having a lot of problems. After reading a few reviews on internet, I also discovered this forum and got very excited about having a rooted nook and its possibilities. So I ordered a nook Simple Touch Glowlight and I rooted it two days ago with nookmanager.
I didn't install google market so I still haven't added any app nor done anything else that I would not be able to do with a nook that is not rooted. So far, the only good thing that I get from my rooted nook is the back button that appeared on the top. But I don't really like the ReLaunch interface so I stopped to think and asked myself why did I root my nook. I initially just wanted to replace my dead kindle. I don't want a tablet. I just want a e-reader with a powerful battery. What I want is:
- Be able to lock my nook with a password as with my old kindle
- Have a back button (not back as previous page on a book. Back as to take me to whatever screen I was in before)
- Be able to read in landscape
Can I achieve that without rooting ? If I can, I will happily revert my nook back to its stock condition.
If I need to have it rooted to achieve the above features, is there any rooting method lighter and less intrusive than nookmanager? Would it be enough to enable adb by following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2122046 ? (I mean do I only need to have adb to achieve the 3 features I want ? )
Many thanks in advance.

Yes. You can already do this. Go to relaunch->applications (bottom middle)->Nook Mod Manager->Assign Keys. Personally I bind top left to back and bottom left to menu. right top and bottom to next/prev page.

Yes but only on a non-stock reader. I recommend installing cool reader, set display mode to fast update 7.
Install this to do so. Use nook mod manager to bind to a key. Personally I have a it mapped to a button on the quick menu and long press top left.

No. Relaunch is just a launcher you don't have to use it.
Benefits of rooting allows you to have a simple ebook reader that does what you mentioned above plus a lot more. You will have to spend a bit of time reading etc how to do it.

Crispy
Stock reader can kind of do landscape.
Just remove the portrait only from AndroidManifest.xml
If it starts in landscape, it will be in landscape.
(Ok, this isn't convenient, you'd have to sign it with the system signature
and you have to kill it to switch orientations.)
A bit of modding would make it truly work.
The problem is, I didn't find the landscape mode compelling enough to bother.
Hi Renate, Crispy
Thank you for your replies.
I did search on the forum, that's why I posted on the Locking screen thread before creating my post, but I got confused
So, just to be clarify, I can have lock screen and back button in a non-rooted nook if I enable adb (following the tutorial made by Renate) and install Nook Mod Manager ? Is that correct or I didn't get it correctly?
Thank you
People get a bit confused talking about "rooted".
Rooted just means having root user access to a device.
It's taken on connotations in the public mind of having Google Play and the kitchen sink installed on it.
It doesn't have to mean that.
To alter most things on the Nook requires you to have root access.
To make the "n" button or the side buttons do different things you must modify software on the Nook.
You have to have root access to do that, but you could disable it afterwards.
There is no point in that because no matter what you have a modified Nook.

Thank you Renate.
I had never had an android device before (Don't even know what kitchen sink is) but my aim would be to achieve Lock screen and back button (I have both now) with minimal rooting.
So could I do what is listed below ?
1) Remove NookManager with all the extra things installed, and put back the backup I took
2) Then perform the minimal root explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2122046
3) Get the lock screen via ADB: C:>adb shell am start -n com.android.settings/.ChooseLockPin
4) Install an app to re-assign the button's actions to get a back button (Is Nook Mod Manager an app on its own?)
Thank you

Yes, to set the lock number, that am start will work fine.
To make one of the side keys a BACK key, look here:
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_assigning_hard_keys
WARNING: I am not responsible for any bricked devices caused by attempting this howto. If you haven't read this how to twice, and fully understand the requirements, then please don't attempt it.
Introduction (not important):
First, this may not be the best way to do this, and if someone knows a better way, I'll be happy to listen.
I kinda stumbled across this solution after trying the many other ways to solve the problem, but all the other ways seemed to have something incomplete with them and ended with no ADS, but no something else, like rotating lock screens or something.
I started with the assumption that the ADS program (dtcp) can be disabled through a flag somewhere on the system, for if you pay the extra $20 you get a kindle with no ADS, but same Android build. After looking through lots of sqlite databases I found it in the com.android.providers.settings/settings.db file.
Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of databases
SQLite Editor Pro (Free on 1Mobile Market)
DroidWall
Steps:
Open SQLite Editor
Open "Settings Storage" (com.android.providers.settings)
Open settings.db
open "global" table
Highlight entry "IS_DTCP_ENABLED"
Click the Edit Record button at the top
Change the value from a 1 to a 0
Click Save
Go back
Make same change on the "secure" table
Reboot kindle for new options to take effect.
Other Thoughts:
This just changes the value temporarily until the device checks back in with Amazon and then the value will get overridden again with the correct value. To prevent that install DroidWall and whitelist only the applications you need to access the internet. DroidWall requires root, which is why root is in the subject. But you should be doing this anyways to prevent OTA updates.
cool
Does this mean that you will now get the rotating native wallpapers that you would have if you paid for the dismissal of the ads? Currently I use adaway on my s4 hotspot and the only one I blacklist is (spectrum.s3.amazonaws.com) this has blocked updates because I am still on old software with no other blocking in place and I have noticed it also has blocked rotateing ads accept I have the same 1 at all times.
Edit: YAY !!!! and yes I now have rotating native wallpapers
Btw thank you for sharing and it is quite refreshing to see a new member join to share useful information in a well thought out and presented OP and not just join to start a thread with a question that is the heading of so many other threads that has been beat to death already..burying perfectly good information..thank you for joining us at XDA!
Awesome!!!! have been looking for a way to do this without factory reset for a while! You da man! Gonna spam that thanks button for a while lol
Thanks so much, that was easy!
Mind after a few days .2 went straight black lock screen
Anyone know what exactly I need to enable in droidwall to have internet but no ota updates or Amazon changing the lock screen back to ads?
Uhg
This mod works fine. No ads, rotating wallpapers appear every time. No reversion to black screen. No need for Droidwall. Use of Droidwall is impractical for this purpose. Who knows what not to include in some giant white list?
It appears that the wallpapers will continue to appear without reversion if you have blocked updates using the root kit.

I assume the block update action from the rootkit is responsible for the lack of reversion to ads since I haven't done anything else except the steps I outlined in the post and the data base tweaks explained above. My kindle has been running for 5 days now without ads and with the startup wallpaper.

I also blocked updates with the root kit. Then I followed this tutorial and it worked great however it did revert back to adds after a reboot or 2.

I'm left scratching my head over that as well. Tomorrow I will re run the ota block script as I'm now concerned that it perhaps did not do something correctly. I did check for updates and it says last update failed but better safe than sorry. I DO NOT want to end up getting updated again. I finally have this tablet running rather nicely and am quite satisfied with most aspects. Still need much more customization options but it's serviceable now. And this tablet has always had the best touch input response of any I've ever used. I'd hate to have to throw it back in the closet.
I am getting now BLACK SCREENS. Any way to change this?
Script
For anyone who wants to run this from command line (e.g. on reboot or network change event) you can create a script like below and use SManager to run it periodically. You will first need to install sqlite3 binary (google "SQLite Installer for Root").
Here is the script that needs to be executed as root:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
sqlite3 -batch /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "update global SET value='0' where name='IS_DTCP_ENABLED'";
sqlite3 -batch /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "update secure SET value='0' where name='IS_DTCP_ENABLED'";
Hi all !
i've recently purchased a a new S5 and am keen to get into the nitty gritty of it all. i've been trawling through this forum for 3 days now resolving problem after problem that i've encountered which has been quite fun as im learning alot about my phone but i have hit a brick wall that is stopping me from activating service mode none of the codes i've found will work, after much searching and a hint here and there i suspect i need to enable the secret menus on my phone so i installed Root Browser to find the efs/carrier folder but there is no "Carrier" folder in the efs folder and i cant find any thing that could explain why please help me i feel im sooo close but my goal is just out of reach.

Can't offer you any specific codes since you didn't tell us which firmware version you have.. but you can find the answer in this thread (or a dozen similar ones).
If you still can't find a working dialer code for some reason, then install a terminal emulator app on your rooted S5 and type the following commands to open the service menu:
Code:
su
am broadcast -a android.provider.Telephony.SECRET_CODE -d android_secret_code://27663368378
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You officially owe me a beer now
.
OP - what's your goal? Why are you trying to open that?
It does sound like you're new to Android, so why go to that trouble?
Because it's there? To see what is possible?
The OP's position makes perfect sense to me.
Thank you very much every one for your responses.
fffft ill try that link and try to work my way through similar links i can find if that one doesnt work.
And if that doesn't work i'll try the terminal program (the thrill of the hunt lol ).
The reason i want to is i'm a tinkerer i like to explore all options and menus and see what i can do with it, previously i owned an Iphone and hated the fact that apple were so controlling of a device i paid many 100's of dollars for hence i decided to go for the Samsung yes im new to android but not new to tinkering with technology it's the challenge i think i hate to be beaten by a non sentient object lol
firmware version is i believe 4.4.2 (android version) if i'm looking at the right thing. Build number KOT49H.G900IDVU1ANE1
(i had to use this file to fix it after i softbricked it trying to root it the first time) G900IDVU1ANE1_G900IOPS1ANE1_G900IDVU1ANE1_HOME.tar.MD5
And yes fffft if this works i'll buy you a whole case of beer !!!
If you like to tinker you would be better learning to mod as there is not much very exciting in those menus

Try the steps in post #50 of the referenced thread.
(Or even easier, install a terminal emulator app)
i.e.
*#0011#
press menu > back
press menu > key input > Q
press menu > key input > 0000
Then wait ten seconds for the screen to refresh to the service menu page
.

Really? I've always found a plethora of interesting items in service menus. And the S5 menu is no different. It had essential information to calibrate the handset and complete several projects. The NV dump dialog is immensely useful for firmware research and modding. And there are people actively looking for new dialer codes and an updated SIM unlock method based on those menus to name but a few examples.
I also thought that the related string that E:V:A found in the S4 firmware worth exploring in the S5 -
mFeatureList.put("emergency_for_cyber_terror", boolean2)
I wonder what features are enabled or blocked in that mode? The thread that I referenced earlier, and it is only one of many on the subject of service menus, has 56,000 views. But yeah, there are other approaches to modding too. If the OP hasn't lost interest already, have a look at this thread which talks about decompling system apps to find out more about the service menu and related firmware features.
