[Q] Customize personal message in lock screen widget - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Is there a way to add more characters or change font SIZE for the personal message? I want mine to say more letters than they currently allow. I couldnt find any way to do it. Thanks in advance!

No, not going to happen, at least stock. maybe a dev can figure that out, I looked everywhere also.
Good luck.

I know there's no setting to change. This is a dev community, I was kimd of asking them. Thanks though.

Sorry to bump an old thread, But I was wondering if you found an answer to this? I am also looking to increase the character count. Seems very limited. I want a message that will inform potential thieves that may find my phone that their fingerprint has been captured and so has their face from front facing camera and has been uploaded to a server already and provide them with a contact number for return with a reward.
I mean if I picked up a phone and that was the first thing I read on a locked screen boy would I return it quick smart. I would return it anyway, as I know how valuable someones phone data can be to people.
I just want some of the less "legit" people around to follow the same protocol  as I would...and what better way to do this than with a subtle message that is "more encouraging"

Programming help with views

I could use some help with an app I'm working on. I need to know how to control the views and work with which things are in focus. I also want it to work even while in the background so using a handler or something else is knowledge I could use help with. I've been sifting through the javadoc and multiple other forums and am pretty much stuck. Anyone with decent knowledge that would be willing to help me out should message me. Thanks in advance.
First I would move this to the Android dev forum
Android uses Intents to display and run processes. Activities are Intents (views)that you can actually see on the screen and Services are Intents that can be run in the background.
Starting on the Android dev site is really the best place to find the answers to the problems.
That and using the Android examples that come with the SDK. Good luck and I hope you were talking about Android! XD
I was talking about android so here's what i'm trying to do. I want to take in trackball movements and pretty much make it so they don't affect my program or others. I'm not sure how to make it so that requestFocus() will take whatever view is currently on the screen, capture it, and pretty much revert right back to it if the trackball is used. I've tried a lot of different things, but I have been stuck on this forever. Anyone know how to accomplish this because for the most part I think that the trackball is not documented all that well. Any suggestions would be great!
I would look at the http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/ui-events.html , onTrackballEvent(MotionEvent) . You should be able to override that in your service, and just process the motion however you want and not call super.onTrackballEvent();
The problem is that although onTrackBall does captures events, it does not capture all of them. In the docs it says that the method will handle all events not already handled by a view. So I guess my question overall is how do you do just that? Take in every trackball movement no matter what view is reading it? Whether it be another app or anything else. How would I capture the remaining movements?
So after a bit more research here's what I've come up with for what I need to do. Either access the event queue or make it so any time the trackball is used, whether on the homescreen or something else, my application will be able to take these events and manipulate then as i need to. So anyone willing to help with this? I figure I need to make a thread, but how do I get it to read in other applications readings? Is this even possible?

[Q] Where are Gmail color/style reply features?

I have more or less figured out how to use Gmail. One tip [can't recall where I read it or would give credit] is that the "missing" <delete> button has an equivalent: <shift> <backspace>. I like the "include text" check box; I also like the "Respond inline" option. I don't like the lack of a true cut/copy/paste, but at least the two-prong work around is available. BUT QUERY: Where are the color options for replying inline and where are the options for bold/italic/underline? I don't mind the lack of the various Smiley faces or the other options. However, the lack of being able to clearly distinguish my response to various sentences/paragraphs in the original is really annoying! It makes it more difficult for the reader to pick up what I am saying from what he/she wrote. Does anyone know if this problem will be fixed? PS: I would also like to have a spelling checker, but that is of secondary importance since I don't use my Transformer Gmail for any really long or involved responses.

[Q] Convert Hero to dumbphone

Hi. Here's the deal...my elderly parents are travelling this winter in another country. International roaming is expensive, as is international travel, and we're looking for as many ways as we can to save money. One of the ways we've considered to deal with both of these problems is to buy a sim card where they are at, rather than bringing their phone from home and paying outrageous international roaming charges. This is where Hero comes in...I have an unlocked HTC Hero that I could let them use. The problem is, they are intimidated by technology, and having a capable phone with lots of features is overwhelming to them. I was wondering if there's a way I can lock the phone down so it goes to the dialer and nowhere else. No lock screen, no email, no Android market, no text messages sent or received, none of that, just the dialer to make and receive calls. Ideally, I'd like to be able to return it to normal functionality when I get it back, but if this is a one-way thing, that's OK, too. It is currently running Elelinux-7.1-Hero-v3.6-Light.
I apologize profusely if this is a silly question...I'm new at all of this.

It's kind of easy what you want...but not every thing can be erased
1ownload eles ROM
2. Open the archive with WinRar or other app that you use
3. Go to /system/apps and you will find all the app there with the extension .apk
4. Delete what you think that they won't use (but be very careful): for example market.apk (you said that they don't need it)
4. Close the program and you will see that the rom is more lighter
5. Flash the rom
6. Enjoy
For the part with the lock screen i don't think i can help you...
Hope you get work done
Stefan
The lock screen part is really the important part. The other apps can still be installed, just abstracted away from my parent's eyes, if they're locked into the dialer. I guess I wasn't clear enough when I described what I was looking for. I want to make it so that the dialer program is the only program accessible to the user...when they press the home button, I want it to go to the dialer rather than to a launcher. When the screen goes off due to inactivity, I want it to go to the dialer right away when any button is pressed rather than showing a lock screen. On iPhone (sorry, it's a platform I'm more familiar with), there's a jailbreak app called IncarcerApp that can do this...is there anything similar for Hero?
Lockscreen
Hi there! If you want to get rid of the lock screen what you can do is go into settings on the phone then Cyanogen mod settings then tablet tweaks and in there, there is a tick box or similar that you can press to disable the lock screen!
Hope that Helped
Thanks for the tip, PP337, but that's still not what I am looking for. I did some Googling last night, and I found a lot of developers refer to what I am looking for as 'Kiosk Mode'. Unfortunately, everything I found on that is in the context of creating a new app, rather than using an existing one.
I'm obviously not making myself clear enough, but I'm not sure how I can phrase it more clearly. I really hope we won't have to go buy a junky SIMlocked Nokia phone that we'll have to throw out in three months when they come home.
i can't understand one think....why is it so hard to unlock a phone??? especially when it's so simple...
Stefan
Unlocking a phone is indeed simple, for you and I. But for an elderly person, particularly one who is unfamiliar with technology, being confronted with a screen full of app icons can be intimidating. I tried to get my mom to use the Android phone as it is, and she is terrified of breaking something or doing something wrong, to the point where she won't use it for those fears.
I have to say, I hadn't expected it would be this difficult to make this 'open platform' do what I want it to. If it were iPhone, I'd be done by now. Disappointing.
Could you not just remove all the homescreen icons? Can't remember which launcher comes with that ROM, but if you install launcher pro for example, you can remove all the icons even the dock. You can then choose to have just one homescreen and just the dialer icon. Or you could leave it blank to just select the dialer button to make calls. Then disable the lock screen as described above. Would that be ok for them ?

how old are your parents that you say that they "can't unlock" a phone... Both my parents use android on their phones and don't have any problems....
Don't want to be rude or things like that but it's easy on android...

She's 72, and in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He's 70 and has a severe learning disability.
I tried the suggestion someone posted about LauncherPro with only one icon. She accidentally long-pressed an empty space and the menu came up and she didn't know what to do. I was able to tell her what to do because I am here now, but if that had happened when I wasn't around she wouldn't have been able to cope at all, for fear it was dialing some 1-900 number or doing something else she didn't want. I'm shocked that it isn't possible to lock Hero into a single app, but it seems it simply isn't. Thanks anyways for all your help.

Are they traveling alone? That sounds like something you should worry about more then just having a phone for them
You could use adw and lock the desktop by pressing menu and choosing 'lock desktop'. That would prevent any accidental menus popping up. You could also hide the status bar from adw settings and disable the lockscreen from cm tweaks menu. You could also download a dialer widget (https://market.android.com/details?id=dialer.impact) and set that as a widget on a single homescreen and lock the desktop on adw launcher.
Hope that helped

[Q] Display Company Field in Contacts

Firstly, hi to all the folks at xda-developers. I have always found this place to be the most useful resource when it comes to figuring out android, but never had an unanswered question till just now.
I just helped my dad migrate from a blackberry to a nexus 4, and while he is quite happy with most of the phone's offerings, he finds it exasperating that the phone does not display the company field from his address book in the people/contacts app. After a week searching online for answers, it appears this is indeed not possible on android yet, and the best advice I found was to manually change the company field to middle name/last name and then "everythings alright with the world again". Hopefully, the people on xda recognize that this is hardly a 'solution'.
I then set out to find an app to replace the phone book, but that was a dead-end. Too many apps out there, not enough documentation on what does what properly and most of the descriptions suggested that they were over-kill for what I was looking to do.
So, my question is this ... Does anybody who knows the internal workings of android 4.3 on the nexus 4 know if this can be a simple tweak on a rooted phone? I do not have any experience at all hacking phones, Im not even a developer, but I imagine the display is controlled by some sort of style-sheet type entity (xml?). My reasoning is that the information is already on the phone... The only thing that needs to change is the way the phone displays the information. Would it be possible, at some level, to edit a file to display an extra line of information?
Of course, if somebody knows of a specific app/mod that already does this, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Karthik
Oh yes --- IF it turns out that there is no way to do what I want without some major hacking of the OS, can somebody suggest the best way to unload the contacts from the phone to a desktop, some app that will automatically remap the company name field to the middle name/suffix, and then upload the contacts back to the phone?
The company is displayed right below the name in the top left corner of the people app.
At least in the paranoid android rom
Swyped from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
In the stock version, the only way to see it is when the actual contact is opened... Meaning, when viewing contact details. The problem with this is that when you have multiple contacts with the same name, it is impossible to dial the right one directly from the Phone App. Each time, one must click on the person's avatar on the left side, which does some weird 'half opening' of the contact, then click again on the top of that dialog box to open the actual contact, at which point the company name is displayed at the top corner.
In my dad's case, he has many many contacts with the same names, even same first and last (we in India have third initials that finally differentiate the persons!) ... On his blackberry, the company name ALWAYS showed under the contact name, and so it was easy to call the right person. With android, neither the phone app, nor the auto-complete introduced in 4.3 seem to care about the company name. So each time, he has to open the contact fully to figure out whom to call!

New U8

Got my U8 today and here's my initial impression:
Plus - 1. Immediately went to English, no Chinese. EZ setup. 2. Several choices for watch faces. Several choices for menu icons. Some are color and big. 3. Love the vibration for notification. 4. Speaker while on phone good. 5. Phone pick up works good.
Cons - 1. Washes out in sunlight bad. That's a show stopper for me. 2. Have to turn off phone Bluetooth and use handset for a private call. Switch is in my phone app and simple but still. 3. I use Touchdown for email and it doesn't notify on the watch. Working on that. 4. Band seems a bit 'soft', not hard rubber.
Added Con - Not having the watch face constantly lit is driving me nuts!

Hi rogerperk,
Some image to your statement is very much appreciate.
Thanks
I was just looking at one of these on ebay today. Are you able to reply to text messages through it? Does it have voice input as well as a keyboard?

I bought a Pebble. Regardless of whether the U8 has voice input or not if I can't see the face they it's useless to me. And outside that is the case. If that doesn't matter then I'd be willing to sell you mine for a cheaper price than you'll get on line. Wore it a total of 2 days.

Thanks but I'll pass. I'm going to stick with my MotoActv for now unless I can pick up a cheap Galaxy Gear or either the LG G-watch or Moto360 convinces me when released.

LOL good choice! The longer I have my Pebble the better I like it.
Just got mine today
Hey Roger,
Been following another thread ("Elegance U8") and now this one since ordering mine off Ebay a week ago. Got it in the mail today, and I can see your points for both pro and con.
Here are my questions, if anyone knows. (yet)
I remember seeing what the actual phone OS is called somewhere, but can't find it now. EDIT: It's called "Nucleus." Have found some info and a sample download online. Might try and see if I can learn how to develop for it.Though the device plays nice with Android and ios, it's actually neither of those things. If someone knows what the name of it is, is it possible to find a tutorial on coding it somewhere?
The initial reason I ask is:
Not waiting for the manufacturer to patch the "shut off screen" function. I'd like to see if I can figure out how to do this myself, and
Enabling texting. Rather than a traditional keyboard, am thinking a sliding alphabet. A - slide to B - slide to C, etc. A pain in the butt, but probably less so than trying to use a keyboard. Picture the "carousel" from the Kindle Fire series, but with letters / numbers / symbols. Also, as suggested earlier in this thread texting with use of the mic, if possible.
Not saying I'd be able to do any of this, but I have limited experience doing some dev work in Android (through Unity) and am wondering if it's possible to self teach this OS, figuring that we quite probably won't see a lot of feature updates from whoever the manufacturer is of this product.
Thanks, and God bless.
If you do develop, please keep us updated. i like the watch but would love to be able to reply to messages. let me know if i can help any also in the development
Does anyone have the latest firmware for the smart watch?
Mine is: M28_KHR.FN1.V04
Regards.
Conect, was wondering if you'd gotten anywhere with OS development for this watch?
Is this the one you got, this is the one i have but the icons and analog faces are different... ?

I've had my watch for about a week now, and I gotta say, for the price, it's pretty killer! I wish there was more development for it besides distributing firmware and flash tools.
I've noticed that when you activate Google Voice search and texting with the watch connected, it uses the watch mic to pick up your voice. I was thinking it might be cool to find a way to trigger voice search and voice texting from the watch, since you can already use it for voice input as long as you trigger the feature on your phone. Have you made any progress on trying to develop for the u8?
Also, I believe I read that they're going to release an SDK for MediaTek devices, such as this watch. Might be interesting to see if anything comes of that.
Wish there was a way to add a count down timer to this watch. It needs to have the timer with a start/stop button on the screen as well a reset button for the timer. so If I set it to 30secons, when I hit the reset after the 30s is up it will reset it back to 30secs again.
I need to root my phone so I can turn off a few notifications that I do not want to transmit.
driver instalation problem
helo,
maybe in wrong thread, but if anyone could help i would be grateful. my windows 8 dont recognise u8 watch, and i cant install provided drivers for vista. i'm stuck, and i would like to instal firmware, but without watch been recognised its not posible. thanx
Is there a way to make the U8 vibrate when you receive a text message or have a phone call?
I was wondering if anyone has found a way to get different faces on this watch. I believe mine may be a clone.
