Hello everybody
I have some doubts regarding what I have just done.
I have had a kindle keyboard for a few years and was very pleased with it. Unfortunately it broke and I had to think about a replacement.
I always had a good opinion of the nook e-reader and found out that the new kindles were having a lot of problems. After reading a few reviews on internet, I also discovered this forum and got very excited about having a rooted nook and its possibilities. So I ordered a nook Simple Touch Glowlight and I rooted it two days ago with nookmanager.
I didn't install google market so I still haven't added any app nor done anything else that I would not be able to do with a nook that is not rooted. So far, the only good thing that I get from my rooted nook is the back button that appeared on the top. But I don't really like the ReLaunch interface so I stopped to think and asked myself why did I root my nook. I initially just wanted to replace my dead kindle. I don't want a tablet. I just want a e-reader with a powerful battery. What I want is:
- Be able to lock my nook with a password as with my old kindle
- Have a back button (not back as previous page on a book. Back as to take me to whatever screen I was in before)
- Be able to read in landscape
Can I achieve that without rooting ? If I can, I will happily revert my nook back to its stock condition.
If I need to have it rooted to achieve the above features, is there any rooting method lighter and less intrusive than nookmanager? Would it be enough to enable adb by following this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2122046 ? (I mean do I only need to have adb to achieve the 3 features I want ? )
Many thanks in advance.

Yes. You can already do this. Go to relaunch->applications (bottom middle)->Nook Mod Manager->Assign Keys. Personally I bind top left to back and bottom left to menu. right top and bottom to next/prev page.

Yes but only on a non-stock reader. I recommend installing cool reader, set display mode to fast update 7.
Install this to do so. Use nook mod manager to bind to a key. Personally I have a it mapped to a button on the quick menu and long press top left.

No. Relaunch is just a launcher you don't have to use it.
Benefits of rooting allows you to have a simple ebook reader that does what you mentioned above plus a lot more. You will have to spend a bit of time reading etc how to do it.

Crispy
Stock reader can kind of do landscape.
Just remove the portrait only from AndroidManifest.xml
If it starts in landscape, it will be in landscape.
(Ok, this isn't convenient, you'd have to sign it with the system signature
and you have to kill it to switch orientations.)
A bit of modding would make it truly work.
The problem is, I didn't find the landscape mode compelling enough to bother.
Hi Renate, Crispy
Thank you for your replies.
I did search on the forum, that's why I posted on the Locking screen thread before creating my post, but I got confused
So, just to be clarify, I can have lock screen and back button in a non-rooted nook if I enable adb (following the tutorial made by Renate) and install Nook Mod Manager ? Is that correct or I didn't get it correctly?
Thank you
People get a bit confused talking about "rooted".
Rooted just means having root user access to a device.
It's taken on connotations in the public mind of having Google Play and the kitchen sink installed on it.
It doesn't have to mean that.
To alter most things on the Nook requires you to have root access.
To make the "n" button or the side buttons do different things you must modify software on the Nook.
You have to have root access to do that, but you could disable it afterwards.
There is no point in that because no matter what you have a modified Nook.

Thank you Renate.
I had never had an android device before (Don't even know what kitchen sink is) but my aim would be to achieve Lock screen and back button (I have both now) with minimal rooting.
So could I do what is listed below ?
1) Remove NookManager with all the extra things installed, and put back the backup I took
2) Then perform the minimal root explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2122046
3) Get the lock screen via ADB: C:>adb shell am start -n com.android.settings/.ChooseLockPin
4) Install an app to re-assign the button's actions to get a back button (Is Nook Mod Manager an app on its own?)
Thank you

is there a way to make the htc keyboard louder? its always quieter than the system sounds and thats a little bit annoying to me. if i wnated to hear the keyboard clicks better, then phone clicks would be too loud.
Small problem.
The audio feedback for the HTC_IME is "standard" and based from what is referred to as "comfortable" sound level.
Meaning; it's supposed to be subtle. Might I suggest installing Better Keyboard from Better Android. They equipped it with quite the "audio feedback boost."
(sidenote - have you considered the audio hack?)
i dont want to root my phone, so tell me about this audio hack
There's your issue.
If you manually install the HTC_IME to your device, whether it's the G1 or MyTouch is irrelevant...most of the "features" do not come along with the keyboard.
Unless you push it via ADB or installed the keyboard directly into your system files...it functions almost like an "application." Therefore, you cannot even access the calibration tutorial that is shipped with the HTC_IME.
As for the "audio hack" - that is something you also need root access for. Unfortunately, if that's something you're not interested in doing, then I cannot further assist you. Sorry.
do i have to root to push it via adb?
i just dont want to root right now because my phone works nicely, i'll probably root in the future when someone compiles an easier method that doesnt need a couple hours of my time preparing a goldcard. its definitely something ive considered, just too risky at this time.
Where have you been?

Funny thing about that...THERE IS A MUCH EASIER METHOD TO ROOTING YOUR DEVICE! If you haven't heard about the miracle that is referred to as, "The One-Click Root Method" - then you're basically living under a rock.
Here's a thought. Considering the ONE-CLICK METHOD allows you to simply flash Cyanogen's latest recovery image to your phone...you can power down your device, then boot it into recovery, HOLDING DOWN - HOME + POWER BUTTON until you come to the splash screen (i.e. - G1 or MyTouch screen) - THEN, technically you're ROOTED.
If you provide me with your GMAIL I would be glad to send you the APK file for the application used to access this process. Along with provide a simple step-by-step guide.
ive been reluctant to try this. can you link me to this one click root and the instructions to get cyanogen rom working?
also its possible to get unrooted for warranty reasons right?
ok, i rooted my phone, so what about this sound hack?
Time to thread hunt.
This is where I leave you.
You need to thread hunt, so to speak. Or even consider a Google search to track down some topics or blog spots that pertain to this issue.
There is an application available from the Android Market, but I believe it's a PAID application. Keep that in mind as a last resort...just in case.
one last thing about the htc keyboard.
is there a way to see the words that the htc keyboard has learned? and delete some words? or even a way to reset the dictionary so that the custom words are removed?
Hi, I have been searching but could not find a related thread.
I'm using the NY Times for Android app on my rooted Nook Touch, but touch scrolling simply doesn't work. It'd be wonderful if I could use the hardware buttons to scroll up and down, but it does not work.
Does anybody know of a way I an coax the hardware buttons to initiate a scroll in the NY Time app or any other app where they don't natively work on a rooted Nook?
Thanks!
I haven't done this yet myself (I'm gonna!) but you should be able recode your hardware buttons using info from this theard.
Edit: In fact this has been put in the new Nooters here and here and here. I just have not updated to 1.1 yet cuz I'm lazy. Once you do just go into the NookTouchTools and you can change the hardware buttons as you want.
Thanks; I gather that somewhere (everywhere?) in those three links is the answer to my question, though they all assume a certain level of pre-existing knowledge about this whole rooting process, and I can't follow along.
Essentially, I now have two nooks:
a)Mine. It still has the 1.0.0 and I rooted it many months ago, and it has the aforementioned issue with not being able to scroll within my NY Times app.
b)My mom's. Bought a week ago, has 1.1.0. From the factory; not rooted yet.
I want them both to be rooted, ideally with the most current version of the rooting that enables me to scroll around in my NY Times app.
Do all 3 links you posted provide the same rooting, just different installation methods, or are they different end-products?
Can you suggest a method (or two methods, one for each device)?
Thanks a million; if this works, I'm a happy camper.
Jon
I suggest you my method use the X files for the Xorzone's mods that with the app NookTouchTools have the ability to remap buttons.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748
I get that you want me to use your method.
Maybe I'd do that, but...
-Would this work on both of my Nooks (in particular the one that is already rooted)?
-Without a translation into "layman" or an easy set of instructions for:
"use the X files for the Xorzone's mods"
it does not seem like the best way for me to go!

Again read the post, you just need to be on the 1.1 update. (Allthough I recommend a restore and reset, if you want to find out how to do it, search or go to the manual rooting thread on my sig, into uninstalling)

Then, whell.... this is written just behind that: "that with the app NookTouchTools have the ability to remap buttons"
Then, if someone gives you a thread, take a look at it at least if you dont look at the post which I pointed you, and find the step by step explanation easy with also the explanation of each type of file.
what can I say?
Cool; looks like it's one of the steps in the instructions. Thinking I'll give it a try next weekend on my mother's nook when I get home. I don't know what a usb vs wifi adb means, so i'll randomly go with wifi (that's the xw option).

It's just the way to acces adb interface (if you dont need it, get the U zips, as on the W the adb is enabled all the time on the wifi connection, so it could, in theory, be a security issue).
hi,
I realize I've been starting quite a few threads in the last days, I hope this is not frowned upon as newb polution or whatever, do tell me if you think it's to much and I'll work on it.
I like to write long and formated reading notes about what I read, not something I can do with the commenting tools of the readers, what I'd like to do is write it in a text editor and juggle it with my book when I feel like taking notes. So do you know of a way to do that ?
What I'm looking for is kind of an equivalent of alt+tab
cheers
Launch your note taking app before the reader. Then, while reading, long-press the 'n' button to get the recent apps list. You may need to install Nook Touch Tools to enable this. You can also enable the option to show the Home, Back, Menu, Search buttons.
Unfortunately, I don't think cut & paste work between apps.
Be sure your note taking app and reader are excluded from being killed off by any task manager you're using.
Awesome! I had no clue I could use that!
That's certainly good enough for now, but if anyone has any ideas how to do it faster though (I'm a complete alt-tab addict ) I'd love to hear it
And for the record you don't need Nook Touch Tools to get that, (I don't have it)
but yeah since you're mentioning it, I've been trying to find the install file for that, could you point me in the right direction?

Nook Touch Tools are here. If you enable the extended menu options, you don't need Button Savior any more.
Button savior is still good to have, though, in case something goes wrong and you accidentally lock yourself in the default home.
thanks for the install file!
yeah I don't want to get rid of button savior just now, it doesn't take much space anyway!
I think the home button on button savior and the extended recent apps list do the same thing.
Hello.
I have a second hand nook ST I bought as a spare. Currently registered to the old owner.
I have a UK and a US B&N account but the UK servers are no longer available since they pulled out of the market.
Am I right is thinking I can just flash the UK nook to US firmware and register the device on my US account? (I already have a nook running fine on a US account)
I have a image for the SD card to flash the rom but I cannot erase and deregister the UK nook using the standard menus as it requires server access. Best way to do this? Factory reset?
Any input will be much appreciated.
thanks
I would try a factory reset as that generally forces re-registration. You could then register it to your US account. At least that is my theory.

No they don't mind where you are. I have another Nook registered on a US account. I think it needs to be the right firmware though or it will just automatically look for the old UK servers that are not there any more.

What is the best way to do a factory reset? I found this on google, any use?
After looking around and trying a few things I was finally able to find a process that works. The first thing is to wipe the data directory by getting it to reset it. To do this on the Nook Simple Touch you have to do 8 uninterrupted starts. So first, hold down the power button (the one on the back) and turn it off. Then hold the power button on the back for a second again to begin to power up the Nook, after waiting a second or two hold both the power and home buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds or so until the screen flashes and it begins to start up again. I found I had to wait a few seconds after the screen turned back on after each flash before holding the buttons again in order for it to reset again. Keep reseting it like that until a restoring screen comes up and it wipes the data drive.

That is the generally accepted (if tedious) method to invoke a reset. I've done it myself in the distant past. I'm wondering what the difference is between a "factory reset", and a return to "factory settings" such as available via NookManager. That path is certainly easier if the net result is the same.
Edit: also, here is a potential alternate method:
-Turn off your Nook Simple Touch completely.
-Turn it on again by holding down power, and then, as soon as the screen flashes, begin holding down the bottom page turn keys on the left and right of the device until the screen flashes with a message asking if you want to do a factory reset.
- Click the home key twice, and you should be on your way.
Thanks, I might give it a go later.
Anyone know, if I end up not being able to register the device, if I can just go ahead and root it? I assume you don't need to be registered to root?
thx

You can skip OOBE (instructions here on XDA somewhere and probably elsewhere) but there are reports that battery life is seriously impacted. No one has substantiated this AFAIK, either with direct measurements or an explanation as to what is going on. However, quite a number of libraries and universities which check out Nooks as readers often suggest this route after doing a factory reset, so it's anyone's guess I suppose.
Ok, update for anyone else stuck with a UK simple touch.
Used this method suggested above (thanks) to factory reset.

Used this guide to flash US firmware.

Registered with my US account straight away. I can see the US store and everything (although I am not sure if you can buy directly, I side load everything anyway).
Thx to everyone who helped,
Confirmed.
Used this method after a friend ended up with a migrated online account (Sainsburrys/Kobo) but a reset Nook (incorrect email when registered, don't ask!) After using this I have it coming up with a registration page for the USA site and I'm now looking to ether side load the books or look at possibly rooting the Nook and looking to install the Sainsburrys/Kobo App if such a thing exists.
Great. Having found an old UK NSTG, this has helped onto the first step towards rooting, installing CWM and finally switching to 1337 ROM.
Results so far: US firmware flashed, Nook registered with US B&N account (I completely forgot I had one, but it still works). Off we go...

Critialmass, can you please provide a link to the ROM you will be installing.
I've recently acquired a NSTG and have been searching for GlowNooter but, perhaps due to it's age, any links I have found are broken and/or the file is unavailable.
Any help you can provide would be most appreciated.

Hello StormStealer, it's the one from this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=6542#downloads
Install instructions are in the "Discussion" section - look for it in the black bar above the downloads.
I'd almost recommend another one a little stronger - it runs on my other Nook (an NST) and seems a little more stable, the 1337-ROM crashes/reboots sometimes, and mostly unexpectedly. So take a look at this one:

Thank you,
I've been doing a bit of searching elsewhere and you're not the first to say the 1337 ROM is a bit buggy.
A few places have said that most custom ROMs are slower (less responsive) than the stock ROM and that they play havoc with the battery life.
I'll try both ROMs out and see for myself.
I used the method described on this page which worked well for the UK Nook I got on eBay to replace my broken one -> http://heeed.net/resetting-a-nook-simple-touch/
Then I installed NookManager and all is well

In the distant past, skipping Oobe on the NST was reported to result in high battery drain. I don't know if that was ever confirmed or if it might also apply to the NSTG.
My dad has purchased a few of the 10.1 inch tablets for other members of our family, and I've been tasked with setting them up.
Is there any way to remove the Walmart branded stuff off of this thing? Especially the Walmart button in the Navbar?
If this were for me, I'd just look to root and installed Lineage OS, but since these are for someone else, I just want to get the stupid Walmart stuff out of there and make things as simple as possible for them.
Happy to provide more information as needed.
Thanks in advance!
Use Link 2SD to freeze the four apps. You can also freeze a WmApps to disable the icon, but I don't know yet if it'll take a hike. Will know after a bit probably. Both of my tablets are acting weird atm.
OK, got it. Disabling WmApps leaves the Walmart icon on the navbar but it locks the tablet instead of showing the four Walmart apps. If you leave WmApps enabled but freeze the four Walmart apps, the icon will bring up a "favorite apps" screen, presumably with whatever apps you want to move to it.
I could use it as instant lock myself.
I was hoping to get rid of the icon, but yeah, I already disabled the other apps. That'll have to do.
Thanks.

I posted a bloat remover script at https://github.com/ikluft/ikluft-tools/blob/master/scripts/bloat-remover-onntab.sh for use on Linux or other Unix-like systems. You must have ADB, and may (or may not) need root access on your desktop/laptop system to run ADB. It requires developer access to the tablet, but not root. (This doesn't remove the Walmart button because that changed in Android 10/11. I saw others posted examples for Android 9 in other threads.)
I have just purchased a walmart 10.1" Model 100003562. (Pro Tablet)
it has Android 11 software and is got the out of the box software including the walmart apps.
I would like to remove the walmart apps and the spying software for the camera and the microphone. I have not yet allowed it to connect to the WiFi to update or have allowed it to identify a google account.
Is there any hope? I have searched over and over for hours for some kinda of guide on what to do with this tablet and I haven't come up with a rock solid description of what I need to do.
I would be extremely grateful for any help and wouldn't hesitate to donate if I need too. I have a few days left with it before I can return it and get a refund if I accidently brick it or if its just impossible to make "clean"
Thank you much.
I thought I'd share my method to remove the Walmart button for others searching. I had removed some of the bloatware using the GitHub script posted. Put that button was still there. I'm using Nova launcher. But I imagine this should work with the stock launcher. You can just get rid of the navigation bar. Enable gestures in settings. This completely removes the navigation bar. The gestures are working well for me and are intuitive. It looks great and clean.
