Another bad news for Sprint users and ...

another reason to believe that Sprint GN2 may not have SIM slot.
We already know that previously Sprint Photon Q (made by Motorola) have SIM internally and unremovable. Now we know that there is another Sprint device Optimus G (made by LG) that will have the exactly similar design as far as SIM slot goes. (source here)
With the previous picture purposely a leak of Sprint GN2 device showing no SIM slot, this is likely to be a Sprint own evil doing.
And BTW I'm one very pissed about this. I 'll definitely sending a snail mail to Sprint Executive Office about how pissed I'm as a consumer regarding turning an international capable device into useless crap once the device come out. I go to Thailand every year or so to visit family member and when I am there I would definitely want to use SIM there because of the local number I can use. With unremovable SIM this is no longer possible. I'm very disappointed.

That's sucks, although I don't go over seas that much.. It would be nice to have. Tell them you Ben kohn bah and your red shirt friends don't approve of this.

Unfortunately most sprint users including myself really don't care that much although it would be great to have definitely not a deal breaker for most and most won't care. I feel your pain as I do go over seas but I don't use my sprint phone for over seas as I use my dumb phone a flip phone unlocked cheapo for traveling. But I'm in ur corner for *****in and moaning hopefully one day it will be different either way just get the damn device in stock and I'm happy

It appears that this is the route they are going now. I wonder why that is? Does using the embedded SIM force you to use a Sprint International plan, for out of country use?

pardon my ignorance, but isn't the "international" version GSM...and sprint's, obviously gonna be CDMA? and as such, no SIM card?

You're right, but some CDMA phones have radios that support at least EDGE on GSM so you can still text and make phone calls overseas (and if you unlock, you could run them on Tmo and AT&T).
However, the question is if the radios will even support the EDGE GSM bands... probably not though.

All of Verizon's LTE phones have a SIM card slot and all of their recent phones also have GSM/HSPA radios for global roaming. I believe some can even run on T-Mobile and ATT's frequencies if you are lucky. But LTE will be Verizon only.

would it be possible to flash a Verizon Note 2 to Sprint in order to have one with a SIM card?

There are so much of competition in market, they skipping features users can easily find alternative. Bad for users but too bad for manufactures. They should understand

Yea, but whose brave soul gonna do that on not even a month old GN2. And that's beside the point. Seriously, to me it seem like it would cost the manufacturor even more to make the SIM embeded than regular one.

my guess Is That and it decreases fraud. I.e. new accounts created simply to obtain discounted phones that can be used overseas ...then the accounts go bad

I don't use Sprint, so I don't know for a fact, but don't their phones usually only run on CDMA (I've only ever heard of Verizon CDMA "world-phones")

I know that the old Touch Pro 2(wm6) and Photon 4G both have dual GSM/CDMA chip in them and they both have SIM slot.

The significant isn't about whether it have SIM or not. I mean for most people in the US I think we can get by w/o it. I mean it's like once every year or two that people would go outside the country and can make use of it. So it wouldn't be like a final decision whether to get one w/ or w/o SIM. And you are right there are also AT&T and T-mobile. But I can say the for some people it's about the network in their local, while for other it may simply be about not going back to the service they have bad experience with. To me it's about cost, since I'm a Sprint SERO Premium account owner. But very, it's more about why walking the low path? The phone would have been technically capable of it, the chipset, modem, antana support it. This is more about why purposely redesign it to lock it down to a specific network, greed, basically.

Yes, the Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 most certainly had a SIM card slot. I had a few of them before making the jump to android with my EVO 4G. It was a nice feature to have on a "Business" phone, which is what the TP2 was geared towards. The productivity of the Note 2 also can be geared for Business users, a SIM slot would be of great use.

Ohh okk that makes sense. Cause I never go out of the country so its not that big of a deal for me. But I guess I'd you travel a lot it would be better to have one

Apparently Verizon figured out how to do it properly as they previously have had CDMA, but now allow removable SIM cards for their LTE world-phones. Sprint is now the only provider that locks their phones down like this- it's very frustrating. I am paying for a brand new device that is inherently compatible as a world-phone, but I must buy a separate device to use over seas so that I don't get raped with Sprint's international calling/data plans. RIDICULOUS! These kind of tactics are out of the apple playbook- limit the options of your customers, so you can squeeze em.

AT&T specific question

I have been with sprint for a long time and never had to mess with sim cards. I am now with att and I have a question about sim cards and activations. I have an android phone right now with att that I am going to replace with the note 2. Can I just pull the sim card from the current phone and put it in the new one? Or do I have to take it into the att store? Also does this cause an activation fee?

You can just switch the SIM. If it's an already activated SIM (meaning it had service in the prior phone) there should not be an activation fee.

Yes, one of the great things about gsm/sim cards. Easy swappable. If your current phone uses standard mini sim, you will need to cut it down to work in the note2/other newer phones that use micro sim cards.

Currently using the original note. So I don't know what kind of sim it has.

You Will need to go to the store. Note 1 has A regular sized sim and the Note 2 takes a Micro Sim you will need a smaller sim but sims are free.

Your can use a SIM cutter. No need to go-to a store. Just be careful and follow the instructions. I've used it twice on various phones.

Just insert that to any unlocked phone you want,
Our policy at at&t is if its a gsm it's possible,
No fees for device transfer since we have a SIM number as a basis of the account not the IMEI or ESN

I have changed phones before and just changed the sim from one phone to the next. I also went to att when another phone took am smaller sim and the att rep got a smaller sim and updated it and handed it to me and said have a nice day. I love att's customer service.

For Those Running a Google Play Edition I9505G on AT&T

Hey everyone,
Did anyone register the IMEI for their I9505G with AT&T? If so, did you have any issues with your data plan changing to non-LTE? My GPE S4 will be here tomorrow and I'm worried that when I activate it, AT&T may not see it as an LTE-compatible device and thus limit my data plan to HSPA+ or something. I know when you're dealing with unlocked devices on AT&T, they will change your date plan speeds based on what their records show the device is capable of. So... did anyone have any issue with this or am I worrying over nothing?

No. I never had any problems. I just asked for a new sim. Nothing more. I was coming from a skyrocket, took the larger sim. No questions were asked. They just got grabbed a new Sim card. Put it in and activated it. LTE workes great for me when I am in it.

No major problems. It was pretty straightforward. Only problem I had was that the S4 uses a micro SIM card and my old phone used a normal sized one so it didn't fit. One trip into an AT&T store and I was all set.
If you don't want to get a new micro SIM card, I guess there are some ways to trim down a normal card so that it works. Seemed easier to just go down to the store and get a new one and handle the activation in one stop.

Ah. So when you got the new SIM card, did you provide your new IMEI number? Or does AT&T still think you have a Skyrocket?
I have an AT&T GS4 right now, so I currently have an LTE data plan. I know I can just swap the SIM and LTE will work just fine. But say I called AT&T and said "Hey, I don't have that phone anymore and here is the IMEI of my new phone...", that's my question.
Does AT&T see the GPE GS4s as LTE capable in their database? I prefer to keep my IMEIs up to date with my carriers, but I won't update it if it means there's a chance I could lose an LTE data plan due to incorrect info on the I9505G in AT&T's database.
That's why I'm asking if anyone actually has an I9505G IMEI number registered with AT&T and if they had any LTE issues after doing so.

I gave them the new IMEI number.

After your two year contract is up, and you unlock your phone, do they turn off LTE? No. Plenty of people bring LTE capable phones to att network. If there is a problem. Make a phone call. They want your money more than they want a lost customer.

I understand that, but when it comes to unlocked devices that AT&T doesn't sell or support, like Nexus devices and, in this case, and I9505G, they sometimes have incorrect information about the phone's capabilities in their IMEI database. That it can lead to problems. But IrishPadres said he gave them the new IMEI and he still had LTE so that answers my entire question. That means that, even though they don't sell the I9505G, they still see it as an LTE capable device. :thumbup:

I just popped my SIM in and was fine. Never called ATT. I was already provisioned for LTE etc. You will only need to worry if you currently do not have a ATT account provisioned for LTE and a SIM. If you need to get a new account and SIM you may need to let them know the IMEI.

Best Verizon Activation Method

So with my pure on the way I am starting to think about how I am going to deal with Verizon activating my phone. Currently I am on an OG Droid that as many of you know has no sim card at all, let alone a 4g sim. From what I can see I have two options:
1) Go into verizon with my new phone and say I want it activated and have them do whatever they do.
2) Order a sim from verizon for a new phone.
-- Now I understand that I can not order a sim without an IMEI number. Does this number need to be to a white listed phone and or the actual IMEI of the phone I will activate with or can I just give them any old valid IMEI number?​-- If I need to give them a valid IMEI number for a Verizon phone can I just submit my sisters IMEI number? Also if I was to use my sisters phone to activate the sim would it mess anything up on her phone?​
So which option do you think is best and if option 2 please address the additional questions related to it.

Tell them you are getting a Nexus 6 or any other phone in their system that uses a nano sim. Tell them it will be a few weeks. I have heard that they will activate a nano sim for you. Pop it in your Pure and you should be good to go. I am lucky enough to have a nano sim in my Turbo I plan on using in my Pure.

Using another devices imei will work. May be a VZW capable device that also takes a nanosim. This is how I got my device activated.

for reference my sister has a turbo which I believe takes a nano

I just took in a different phone without the sim card, which I used for my moto X . They gave me a new sim for the original phone, then I called *611 to activate it. Worked well but the representative keep saying it is a non VZW device and Verizon only allows approved phones on its network. She was nice just sounded confused by this and only mentioned after it was activated.

For now I just took the sim out of my Nexus 6 and popped it in the pure, my main issue with that is now i want to sell my Nexus 6 and i think im not going to be able too
This whole thing is a cluster F, mainly cause Verizon sucks at change and allowing stuff in there network. Im sure they are not the only carrier thats a pain but by far the worse. I would assume this why we don't see every phone come out like this one at least yet

they will mail you a nano sim in 2 days
take current sim out of old active phone
carefully position the nano sim in the slot of old phone. I used a note 4 that takes a micro sim but i was able to position the nano sim correctly in the slot for it to work
reboot phone and cal *611 to activate new sim in old phone
once new sim is active, put it in moto x
you can sell old phone without any issues. account is tied to sim not phone

So my IMEI from my N6 is not tied to the sim card and once its out and in another phone the N6 is able to be sold or activated as another line and not effect my moto x pure

correct. The SIM will update the new IMEI number to your account, hence why the device shows as unknown in my verizon. If the old IMEI was tied to the card, you would see a nexus 6 as your device when your Moto x was active, which is not the case.

According to Droid Life's follow up with Verizon they plan on having all the kinks worked out by Friday.

I went in to a non-retail store, but an authorized retailer and got a SIM card from them...I got home and called the *611 number and activated it, they didn't even ask the type of phone...

I was an existing customer...I just went in to the store and said I needed a new SIM cause I got a new phone with nano SIM and I was currently using a micro; he looked up my name and number to verify the account and I took the card and left...The non retail stores used to charge, but I guess they don't anymore...I may have gotten lucky and the employee was an idiot, I dunno...Went home, called *611, told them I needed to activate the new card and she activated it under my number and I turned it off and then back on and it was good to go! I did call from the new phone too...

I have a Galaxy S5 currently and will be receiving my Nexus 6P very soon and would like some clarification in regards to the SIM on Verizon's network.
Since the S5 uses a micro-SIM, besides getting a nano-SIM from Verizon, what else do I need to do? A local rep asked if if it's an NFC SIM or not. I told him, "I don't know" and he said to just bring the phone whenever I have it to figure it out. What do I need to do to activate the SIM?

just use a sim cutter and cut your micro to a nano.

I just had a similar experience. Although with 2 different devices, your results should be the same...
I had an LG G2 with a micro-SIM, going to the Moto X Pure needing a nano-SIM. Best Buy (where I bought it) wanted $30 to set the Moto up, and a franchise VZW store wanted $25. So I went into a VZW corporate store and they installed a nano-SIM for free. Couldn't have been nicer about it as well.
The Moto is carrier unlocked but it posed no problem for the corp. VZW rep to activate, and it only took about 5 minutes. I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of my Nexus 6P - 64gb, and I expect I'll have the same experience then as well..

You don't need an NFC SIM. The NFC SIM cards were for ISIS/Softcard NFC payments. Android Pay doesn't need an NFC SIM card. Of course, your phone will also work fine with an NFC SIM card.

I'll sell you my sim cutter. paid $7 for it. You can have it for $3. Worked perfectly. Easy as using a hole puncher. Cut it down, popped it in and no dealing with VZW. With UDP....I won't risk letting any of those store morons touch my account for anything.

there is already a thread covering this topic but I would avoid going to a VZW store if possible. you'll just be wasting an hour of your life and they'll likely try to sell you a $20 SIM you should be getting for free.
figure out how to cut it yourself or buy a cutter.

walk into any verizon store and get a SIM. i did yesterday in the city. guy gave it to me for free. went home and live chatted verizon. asked to setup a new SIM. no questions asked, activated no problem in my 6P
