So I have a few specs of dust under my screen. One makes the screen look like it has a dead pixel. I called Samsung and they want me to mail it in. Pry 7 day turnaround. I bought it out of town which is s five hour round trip so an exchange is possible.
I have an ipad 2 so I would only be having small withdrawals from my tab.
Should I go ahead and send it in and hope for the best or plan a road trip. I'm leaning towards shipping it as they are paying both ways. So zero cost.
Anyone else have dust and what would you do.

Got the same on my white galaxy tab 10.1 that I bought at Best Buy two days ago (maybe part of the initial Google I/O limited edition batch?).
I see four particles of dust but only when there is direct light over the screen. Thinking about exchanging it.
A curiosity, is your tab the white or metallic gray model?
Thanks!
Had 8 specs of dust under the screen towards the top right... made me so angry I returned it and plan on waiting for a better quality tab
I had one speck and planning to return it at BB. I got the white 16GB one. I'm afraid that the replacement will have more.

Are they visible under any conditions or only under certain conditions (e.g. direct sun light over the screen)?
I had this issue with 2 tabs, including the one I currently have. I saw it, exchanged it at best buy, and the new one has it too. I'm waiting for them to get a new shipment to exchange it again.
Silver 32g
The dust is visible from all angles, even when the screen is off.
I'm waiting on an exchange unit from compusa because my first tab had slight light bleed, specs of dust, and liquid-looking blotches under the screen only visible under direct sunlight. It also had some type of big, weird, dusty looking spot under the screen. when I first noticed the light bleed i was ok with it but after i noticed the other issues i decided to return it. I'm afraid the exchange unit will have these issues so I believe I should have sent it in to Samsung. It probably would have taken longer but atleast they'd make sure I received a tablet without these screen issues... probably lol but who knows?
I didn't take the dust under the screen thing that seriously, until today when I used my tab under some bright lights and noticed a glaring white piece of dust in one corner of the screen. Highly reflective on a black background and relatively noticeable. I'm really pretty amazed. I'm still within my Best Buy return window, and will probably bring it back tomorrow.
I'm curious, for those who returned it to Best Buy, did you tell them the true reason you were returning it and did they give you any trouble? Or did you simply say you weren't happy with it?
For those who exchanged, did any of you ultimately get a perfect unit?
Not sure if I should accept a single piece of dust in the far corner of the screen, or gamble on getting a perfect screen on the next try. Won't be much of an improvement if the next screen ends up having 8 pieces of dust and a couple of dead pixels.
Edit: Just got curious and took out a penlight. Found two more central pieces of dust under the screen. Best advice to new GTAB 10.1 owners - never look too closely at your screen. You might not be happy with what you find!
just made up some BS about other issues you have with the tablet.

Yup, thats what I usually do if I have a dead pixel. Not worth aruging with the salesperson about whether its a "Significant Defect". Was just wondering what Best Buys current attitude toward these things was.
Edit: Just did the next obviously necessary thing: ran the penlight over my XOOM screen. Found extremely small pinhead size specs in a few places which seem to be parts of the screen surface with slightly greater reflectance, but nothing that appears to be dust. So, the much criticized XOOM screen seems to be dust and dead pixel free, at least in my case.
Mistery solved
I returned my Galaxy Tab to Best Buy for a replacement. I opened the new box crossing the fingers and ... the new tab was flawless! Zero dust anywhere!
Two days later I noticed two specs of dust under the screen. Hmm, I thought I did a pretty accurate inspection... I checked it very carefully again. Only two very small specs of dust: one on the right and one on the left side of the screen.
Today I check again and I can count eight specs of dust!
Is it possible they enter from outside?
I checked for possible gaps between the glass screen and the plastic case and I found a gap all around the edges of the glass screen. Not large but I can stick a sheet of paper in it.
Another possible explanation is that dust enters from the speaker grills and the connector socket. The position of the specs of dust is close to them. I think that the latter is the most probable cause.
Anyway, it is a fact that this is not dust that was trapped during the build process, this is dust that entered the tab in the 4 days that I used it. This means that the dust will keep accumulating: if I got eight specs of dust in 4 days I can imagine what I can get in a year!
This one goes back to Bets Buy too and this time for a refund.
It is really a pity, I really liked this tab!

I returned my tab to Best Buy (2nd return, first was because of lcd defect [rainbow sheen]) the second one I got was a white one that had dust under the screen. Looking over their return policy there is nothing other than the standard "we reserve the right to refuse any return/exchange" disclaimer. Those of us experiencing these issues, please do the rest of us a huge favor when returning your tablets, don't lie or misrepresent your reason for return. Be honest with the person handling the return, thereis no valid reason that they should deny it. Hopefully Best Buy will clue in with the amount of charge backs they're hopefully going to have to do in the near future.
The only thing that really pisses me off in regards to the whole situation is that none of the tabs the have left have unlocked bootloaders. It's almost insulting that the first 5 that samsung shipped for release day and none of the secondary shipments do.
Except that best buy is now requiring valid id for returns because they are tracking what people exchange for some reason. Eventually they will stop you is my guess but who knows. Just be careful.
Well along with dust under my screen...somehow a small bug got under there too.
This is very frustrating...
Sorry for the crappy quality

Just received my third tab..
First one had minimal dust specs and screen separation, se ond one had fingerprint like smudges and dust particles under the screen and screen seemed loose, my third one has a tighter screen and only 1 dust particle...
I think i will just keep this one...

I have 1 speck of dust; unfortunately it is half way down the luminous battery icon so very easy to spot if you want to find it. I noticed it right away and haven't had any new pieces since then (2 weeks). Mines is the black 16gb UK one.
If it had not have been over the battery I would never have seen it and it does seem to be moving slightly so I am hopeful it will one day hit the black status bar and disappear. It depends where these things are as to whether they are annoying; personally, I get the odd speck in my eyes every now and again and you don't notice it after a week or so. The advice not to go looking for them is very good - you may well not like what you find but also it's not the end of the world if the device functions. The first scratch anywhere is the worse on any device but after that you realise it is no biggie. My ipod has a giant crack in the screen so it could be a lot worse.
I went through two 32GB at Best Buy both with horrible (5+) pieces of dust under the screen. The second one had like a piece of string or something a couple mm long under it. Third unit appears completely flawless (for now) and I am quite satisfied.
Is anybody using any kind of case? Or just naked?

Long story short - sold my Note about 2 weeks ago in anticipation of the Nexus. After some reading of reviews on the Nexus, and working off my Atrix in the interim, I quickly began missing the speed and display. I just don't think the Nexus screen is going to do it for me after the Note.
Just got my shiny new Note this morning and I am again satisfied. It's going to take quite a piece of technology to top this. Either way, I have a Nexus on the way as well so I can have both in front of me and compare a few days each. We will see.
One of my issues with the Note was that it seemed quite cumbersome handling it on the road. This time around I am equipped with the Samsung flip cover, and it provides a better grip to the phone - I think.
I did the same. Bought it, returned it and went back to my matrix, missed it and bought it again. I can't go backb o a small device again.

welcome back..
Just to quell any concerns of soon-to-be owners: It can be done. It can be used with one hand. I'm not a giant (about 6'1", slightly above average) and I'm coming from a 4S, so I'm not used to huge phones. You literally just have to grab it differently than you would a tiny phone.
I don't understand why all reviewers grab this phone like a murder weapon, and grip the crap out of it - and then try to use their thumbs to grab the adjacent corner of the screen. Wtf? Of course that's not gonna work. I can reach the top corner, but I splay my fingers across the bottom of the phone for better control. I'm sure the people who really love this phone and use it as their daily drivers figured that out within the first day and are happy as can be.
Long live the big screen.
I agree, in the beginning I found that it was a bit difficult to handle even with my large hands but as soon as I got used to holding it "like I'm supposed to", which took me like ten minutes, using it with one hand has been a breeze!
Now it feels weird to hold smaller phones, I tend to try to clench them with just my palm.
Hahaha that's exactly what I was doing earlier. They do start to feel like tiny toys

i think i may have to improve my dexterity on this one, lol.
But the thing is with smaller phone I can grip the other side with the 4 other fingers, while with my Note if I want to comfortably use it with one hand, my other 4 fingers can only slightly grab the back of the phone to allow my thumb to move comfortably (that is can reach the other side of the screen with my thumb), and I'm scared of dropping Note holding it like that

I have smallish hands but I can easily operate it with 1 hand but the 'safety level' of operating the device with my small hands is close to 0. Soon after I switched to land scape mode with the use of ADW EX and use the phone almost exclusively in landscape mode but with 2 hands mostly.
I don't really need it but people with one hand issues should try button saviour on market.
Sent from my Galaxy Note using xda premium
Haha yeah I know what you mean, I would say my safety level drops quite a bit. Walking around outside and holding it like that for a prolonged time wouldn't be the smartest thing to do..
And I don't know if it matters, but I bought the white one and what was supposed to be a glossy, slippery back actually provides a good amount of friction (for whatever reason) when I hold it.
I just bought the zagg shields for this, to hopefully add to that friction and not take away from it. I'd hate to put this in a case and have it be even fatter :/
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Oh yeah, and in landscape, you can pretty much only hold it. That definitely requires two hands for input

Agreed, had it for a week now. All my typical things I use to do: one hand, in pocket, holding on to other things and phone, watching yottube in bed while falling asleep, music listening while doing other things so loose and simple touches - all work fine -- many better. There is something amazing that the larger screen ( see more, more is big, less zooming in and out) along with the real estate for interacting that this phone gives you - that is a game changer. Also the voice input tools are huge ( vlingo and gvoice) , work great with this build and dual processor -- so I am doing much more with voice ( most of my email writing , commands to get stuff or do stuff). And of course the best is the spen - its precision and accuracy are so MUCH better than touch. Touch is great for fast and casual, but sometimes you are sitting ont he couch or desk or standing leaning against a wall where you plan to do over a minute of browsing, scheduling, email answering - I find the pen rocks a these times. In fact see this page on xda, look at the smallest icons you want to hit ( next page, ...) I do not have to zoom for any of them, I can hit the all (like 1 pixel accuracy with the spen) - saves me huge wasted zooms and moves and misses. Love this phone - again it is a gamer changer.
I didn't have a problem using the Note with only one hand. But the problem is that if you're walking then it might drops easily. Si I found a great compromise, I bought a silicone cover which adds more grip. And it saved me once after I dropped my Note being on my bike. The Note didn't get any damage whatsoever.

Like some others, it's more about adjusting your grip and supporting rather than strangling the phone! It is a little tricky to text while walking etc but it's do-able.
I've actually started finding other phones with their tiny screens and keyboards difficult to use! ;-)

I switched from GNex because I couldn't stand that plastic back panel crackling and how cheap it feels (like every Samsung does). Now I have N4 and what started happening to my GNex after two weeks, the same thing started happening to my brand new N4 after 4 freakin' days!!! I am pissed beyond words! This is suppose to be Google's flagship? Seriously?! I seriously regret that I didn't take HTC One instead!
Even small pressure, like putting the phone on desk or holding in hand, will push back plate slightly into phone, thus creating gap right next to it on the right side and on bottom of the left side. When I put it to my hand to clean the display the back plate will make move again. So in the end almost every pick-up I make is "packed" with crackling sound from either back plate or sides, like if I was holding cheap Samsung crap for 1 €! I didn't pay 450 € for this disappointment!

Its a tiny creaking noise, and from that you're saying it feels like crap? *Cough"OCD*Cough* Let the phone 'ware in'..
It's anything but tiny. I can hear it and feel how it moves by simply using it. I don't need to perform any special moves or something. A simple pick up suffice. Considering this phone has nothing removable (except SIM card), but still manage to bring the same issue, it says a lot about it's build quality.
I think it's the issue with your particular Nexus 4... mine one feels very solid. :/ maybe try to exhcnage the phone?
I used to have a GS3 but i couldnt stand its cheap materials, so the nexus 4 feels like a much needed upgrade in terms of hardware
The back panel literally bends into the phone. How is this even possible with glass back panel is beyond my comprehension.
P.S.: I was worried, like many others, that I'll scratch it somehow and somewhere, so I was keeping safe. I mean extremely safe. I didn't even imagine that this would happen regardless what I do.
I would not call the device crap if you are having problems. Its something wrong with you or that particular device, as numerous people and developers love this phone

The noise most likely comes from the camera assy when the lens moves inside it. (known feature since the launch)
And the back glass indeed does flex some under pressure. Most likely thats a feature also to minimize the risk of breaking the back glass.
At least my rev11 version does flex (very)little when i press it.
Did you even test the phone anywhere before buying it?

The black 32GB Wifi version (North America) I received does exactly this and the backing is coming unstuck. Whether the screen flex would be as pronounce without that defect, I don't know but I'm very disappointed with Sony's quality assurance. It does make it feel flimsy.
I'm returning the tablet and am going to wait for the new wave of Tegra 4 tablets from other manufacturers.
Most resistance against flexing is provided by sides so it will flex more then thicker devices , i think its obvious.
The touchscreen responsiveness shouldn't be happening but it requires quite a bit of force so in normal use its not an issue. I didn't even realise it exists up till now.
GL on your travels.
Luckily I dont have this on my tablet z.
My xperia z however does and it gets annoying every once in a while.
This is a trade-off for the particularly thin build Sony pulled off here. My Archos does the same thing and is pushing on 3 years (granted, i don't use it much any more, but it got a lot of abuse in its day).
There are probably ways it could have been almost as light, almost as thin, and a whole lot stiffer - and possibly a good idea, too. But it is what it is. It's not a material defect, but a design decision - perhaps one not so good, but we won't likely know for a little bit...
Guys, I am also getting the flex which is causing homescreen swipes and back button presses. I was using the Moko Slim Cover case from Amazon. The weight of the case while being held with only the right hand was causing MAJOR problems with unintentional screen presses/swipes. Now that I have removed the cover while I wait for a new one, it only happens once in a while.
I just ordered an Incipio Feather to see if the more rigid design will support the device and not allow it to twist. I only wish the Incipio Lexington had a wake/sleep magnet included.

You could probably cut the Moko open and observe the magnet placement and undo the Lexingtons stitches and place the magnets in it and redo the stitching. I am thinking about doing this myself because of the damn screen presses.
I wonder if putting it in the Feather and then in the Moko would stop the presses..... Time to order one!

Yes, I have both the Feather and the Moko and they do work very well together. I do sometimes still get an unwanted screen swipe left or right, but it is very rare compared to when I first received the tablet and was using it bare.
I also just received the Poetic case which is more of an iPad type of case which I really like. However, Poetic covered up the charging port so you have to open the cover (The cover hinges at the bottom of the XTZ) to charge the XTZ unless you cut a portion of the cover away.
I really like this tablet, but the battery life is killing me. I would have rather Sony make the tablet twice as thick and put a >10,000mah battery inside. I'm looking heavily at a Nexus 10 at this point because it seems to have the best battery while still having a great screen, fast processor and 2GB memory. Initially the lack of an SD slot was a deal breaker, but I'm finding that Sony didn't allow a way to move apps to SD which basically makes my 64GB microSD sit empty since I purchased the tablet.
Very happy with this case Profile Grooves Stand Case for Sony Xperia Tablet Z 10.1 inch from ebay the tab is more stiff and the tab sleep when cover is close. For the flex Sony can make and stiffer back cover.
The Nexus 10 has even shorter battery time than the Tablet Z! Duh!
I would be surprised if that were true. The Nexus 10 has nearly a 10,000 math battery.

It is true. And known all over the internet. The Nexus 10 has a rather short battery life because of the energy-hungry components.
