That's not a bug. That's the normal behavior of TW since 5.1.1 (ar least for S6 and S6 Edge).
The last version of TW is eating a lot of RAM and to prevent lags and freezes (that were occuring on S6 with 5.0), Samsung has decided to systematically kills apps in background to free RAM.

The s6 has had that since 5.0. Atleast mine did
And yes sites are stating Samsung is purposely killing apps to keep the phone speedy.
What's the point of 4gbs tho if you still can multitask because everything has to reload

With 4 GB of RAM? That's insane behavior.
WOW ****ing ridiculous Samsung
im Samsung fan since long time but WTH Samsung is doing for real ? this completely BS even with 4GB of ram you cant have 5 apps open ? wtf
on my windows laptop with 4GB of ram i can open 5 - 8 REAL apps not mobile apps and chrome with +15 tabs without hiccup , heck even my 3 years old Note 2 with 2GB ram and 4.4.2 can keep like 10 apps open at least

no its not normal , its BROKEN ram management -_-
probably they will fix it with S7 and S6 or Note 5 wont get the fix so yeah
That settles it. You guys should buy LG G4's and move to that forum.

My wife's international Galaxy S6 still has the issue and that was released in what, April?.
Eventually is a relative term and who knows if they'll actually fix it.
Edit: Maybe eventually isn't relative as much as it is a completely open ended time frame. Bugs don't always get worked out as quickly as we hope.

Touchwiz. Other lollipop based devices are not aggressively killing apps. Nexus 6 you can routinely have a good dozen or more apps in the background and they won't refresh.
Likewise even Moto X has around 8-9 and has half the ram of the Note 5 and 50% less than the S6
HTC M9 - similar story to the Nexus 6 regarding backgrounded apps
Sony Z3 - same story again.
M9 is running a heavily skinned OS and Z3 has a less heavily but still skinned take too. Yet none of these devices have ram management issues and all of them are performing better in multitasking and are running Lollipop
This is Touchwiz. What's more unfathomable is why with the Note 5 it can't run any more apps in the background than the S6/S6E despite that extra 1Gb of ram. Again it's another case of Samsungs excellent hardware and muscle power being heavily compromised by a skin that whilst given a lick of paint - is under the hood still a terrible bloated by legacy code, utter resource hog.
The disappointment is simple, imagine how fast these devices would be running a different manufacturers skin or stock. It's a shame Samsung have made no attempts here to fix this, and as they HAVE NOT ACKNOWLEDGED the Ram issue officially in any shape or form - to presume they are going to ever fix it is just wishful thinking unfortunately.
It's obvious at this time that they have modified the default behaviour. It's not like the RAM is fully utilized, there is free RAM but the background processes are removed memory. Only thing I can think about - battery. And right now I can think that this is completely intentional from Samsung. The default android behaviour is to keep them in memory, so they should have changed it. Don't think there will be a 'fix' as such from Samsung.
Did some searching and apparently there is a partial fix for S6 at least using build.prop editing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6/general/s6-ram-management-discussion-t3128229
There are other threads saying that similar changes in a Note 4 running 5.0 also work. So, as long as the device can be rooted, there does seem to be some relief. Is that right or am I missing something.
Still not sure that I want to get a Note 5. Would appreciate any comments.
I own the S6 Edge and the two things I absolutely hate about it are the battery life and the terrible memory management. So I figured I would get the Note 5 because it has a little bigger battery, so should be some what better in that regard and I thought surely, as long as the S6 has been out, and the Note 5 comes with 4gb of ram, surely they got the memory management issue figured out?? Seriously Samsung?? I don't want to get into the IOSvsAndroid debate cause I love Android and Google but I also own an iPhone 6 Plus that has a whopping 1gb of ram and I can have several apps open in the background, switch back and forth between them and not have to reload any of them. I know nobody really cares what I do or my opinion but I honestly think I'm done with Samsung for awhile and that sucks because they make amazing hardware.

This is precisely why, on my Note 4, I've remained on KitKat.
What is the use of heavy multi-tasking if, every time you go back to a previously opened app, it reboots? How do you copy from email for example, to a document that you're preparing to scan and send, and refer to information on the web at the same time?
May as well buy any other phone out there, what's the difference? What's the point of the Note Series?
It bugs me no end.

That's why I try to use multiple Windows's at once on my s6. That's the only way to be productive with this bug. Not only that but browsing on chrome is worth than on my iPhone that has 1gb of ram.
I love the Galaxy phones, but I'm not sure if it's worth the upgrade right now.
I remember reading something about the Edge Plus having a fix for the ram, off of sammobile awhile back
Insane
Currently on the OnePlus... Really debating whether I should go for the Note 5. Seriously changing my mind now.
Is it simply a matter of the app reloading when you open it? Or is there a specific limit of how many apps can be in the background before the issue presents itself?

It's clearly intentional - and Samsung NEVER acknowledged the ram issue on the S6 / S6 Edge. I know I was one of the original authors of the threads that sparked the reports. Samsung posted a generic Facebook response to the issue but it was so generic it was a cut and paste answer for anyone having an issue with software. This was picked up by same media who reported on our threads as 'an official acknowledgment' however it was not anything of the such.
Samsung has not mentioned anything about the ram issue officially - and the fact it persists in the Note 5 / S6 Edge Plus despite an additional 1gb - means it's unlikely it will ever be fixed.

The issue I've had with the S6 Edge is reloading the app when you open it. It's gotten a tiny bit better with an update but still no where near acceptable for an $800 flagship that has 3gb of ram in the S6 and 4gb for the Note 5 & S6 Edge+

Hello guys,
I have been using Note 1, S3, Note 2 - with the ICS on Note 1 I felt that the system went a bit laggy (using Custom ROMs solve the issue so far); I felt that 1GB Ram on S3 was not enough as the system by default already use ~600-700Mb or so, manageable. With 2GB on the Note 2 I felt that it was pretty enough, under heavy loading it took like ~1.4-1.5 GB Ram, sometimes the system micro lag a bit - no major problems tho.
We all know that Samsung loves to throw all kind of features, their apps etc into the device; the TouchWiz is cool but I believe it's optimized.
Keeping all this in mind , with the new apps/features in the S4 (SS Health, Air stuffs etc etc) I wonder if 2GB is enough? Also that the new Android OS the 5.x version should be around the corners - although the sources confirm that even S3 (with its 1GB Ram) will have the Key Lime Pie 5.x but I believe it would be not smooth and breezing fly - just like the case of Note 1 with ICS.
With the rumors saying Note 3 will going to have 3GB of Ram this really confuses me. I'm in decision b/w S4 and Note 3 - I was really happy with the Note 2 (gave to my daddy) but it's a little bit big; the S3 was okay but the 1GB was shortage.
Yup, it's plenty, no need to worry about that. Laggyness is an inherent problem with touchwiz since the first GS, was also a problem with my GS2 and a friend has mentioned it's been an issue on the S3. I expect the S4's UI to be lag free but wouldn't be surprised if there are some hiccups. Lag can be due to keeping the voice feature on, or lack of optimization. Either way, gaming and other tasks wont suffer, so don't worry.

Thank you very much,
I have tried HTC , Sony and the Nexus line with weaker specs but the system seems to be optimized way more (esp. the pure Android Nexus line).
I will be super happy if in the S4 they solve the wake-home-button-lag due to the CPU (Exynos 4) specific; that is so irritating
In any case I'm going to root the device as I always do =))
Well I used s3 for 4 months and sold it just bcz of the lag issues you have mentioned. In s3 I used to freeze or remove every bloat app so I can get free ram, it sill disnt solve the issue. I got note 2 and all the lag issues gone, I wonder how you even faced micro lag, I never faced any. Now my ram is full of bloat, I still get only 200-250mb free ram but I never faced any lag.

err, i think you guys have a common misconception. Free RAM = wasted RAM. on Linux, it is better for the ram to be full rather than to make it not fill up at all. Lags are always due to background apps continuously running.

really the more ram that caches apps and games the better, quicker and uses less battery.. so even if a phone has 10gb ram it should use as much as possible as android manage the memory very good on its own.

Seems every manufacturer wants to sell a new device every year, so... they put less than is possible on their top of the line devices to assure that next year the hw would be too old and stupid sheeps (us) would feel the need to update.
I have a 5 year laptop (in which Ive put just more rams) which does it's job extremely well. But smartphones needs to be upgraded every year.
No manufacturer wants customizable hardware so that the end user could build himself a smartphone that would last ~4 years.
For example if the SGS3 had 2 gbs RAM it wouldn't need upgrading, and if the S4 had 3 or more gbs RAM wouldnt need an upgrade next year.
Regarding that rumor that Motorola would allow us to build a phone to our specification is simply dumb. Android can't support so many configurations, and certaintly that manufacturer would destroy the market by simply stopping the need for hw upgrading every year (similar to pc market)
So... 2 gb is not enough..
Nothing is enough in this market.
If you want all the goodies Android and various apps will bring in the future you will certaintly need to upgrade your S4 next year.
I've done a decent amount of research and it seems like 3GB of RAM would be unnecessary but there's rumors out there pointing at a possible 3GB of RAM but it seems like the 2GB is pretty set in stone. Anything can happen. But, in my opinion, 2GB is enough for the phone... just not my personal peace-of-mind.

To be honest I'm all for the S4, better screen, better camera... - hell yeah!
But here in my place , I have info about Note 3 will be having 3Gb ram - basically, Note is a larger Galaxy S with bigger screen, clocked CPU/GPU and have some S-pen features; and having an additional 1GB of RAM:
Note 2 > S3 for 1GB Ram
Note 3 > S4 expected for 1GB Ram again
Note 1 = S2 with 1GB Ram but with ICS Official Loaded I'm sure that S2 runs faster and smoother than Note 1.

Actually American GS III does have 2gb ram... But anyway I honestly think 2gb of ram is plenty for anything we need on a phone for now at least. I guess it'll depend on how efficient the os/touchwiz runs. But i *think* iirc at least the gs iv ram is significantly better. But anyway if I can get a real upgrade and not a pay it off throughout two years kinda deal I'll probably pick up the S IV and sell my gs iii

Has anyone noticed a considerable lag continuing even after Samsung's most recent Firmware Update for the Note 4? Some users and commentators are praising the Note 4 for its lightning speeds and no lag, but somehow I cannot say the same. I have serious lags in most any operation of the Note 4, but especially in the Camera.
Is it also normal, that there is static when the speaker is turned up?

I can't believe i'm saying this but i have been using a Galaxy Note 4 for two weeks and i have never experienced even the tiny bit of lag. You should try disabling apps you are not using, disable sync etc. If nothing works you should try factory reseting your phone.
I'm using a tmobile note 4 on the latest anj4 firmware and my phone is almost unusable.
There's so much keyboard lag regardless of what keyboard I use.
Scrolling sometimes just completely stops until I actually pick up the s pen from the display.
I actually had a Samsung rep at best buy look at it and he couldn't believe how bad it was. I sent it to Samsung but of course since I had rooted it they said it was my fault.
I've been rooting and roming phones since the captivate and have never had an issue.
My note 4 has been like this from day 1, I bought it new from eBay which was my mistake. Now I'm basically stuck with it and at time's the lag is so bad I want to throw it out of the window.
Mine is definitely hardware defective. I have a Lumia 520 that runs smoother to be honest.
I guess the only way I can get any money back from it is to sell it for parts I suppose.

I haven't removed any bloat since I got my phone, i'm running it 100% stock so I can point out and laugh at these idiots trying to talk about how slow the phone is with all the bloat, well at least on the AT&T version there is pretty much no slow downs at all, this phone really is a workhorse. 6 days of use and it's not crashed or hard locked, it hasn't force closed an application while I was trying to use it, and it hasn't even done more than a slight hiccup when I first got it out of the box.
For the first 2-3 hours my phone was downloading apps and updates and installing everything so it was a bit slow during the first 2-3 hour time period. But ever since that all finished it has been flawless.
Yeah I don't know where anyone saying lag. Lag is non existence on the note 5 Verizon version.

This is a good point. If the story from OP is at all true its surely because his mom signed in, then it started auto downloading all of her apps, and it was laggy while it was installing 120 apps so she said she didn't like it. Other than that there is no chance this is even remotely true. I just went from a Nexus 6, which is leagues faster than the N4, to the Note 5 and its a huge improvement. I was not very impressed by the N6. Was quite slow right from the start. I went to that from the M8 and it felt slow out of the box compared to that. The Note 5 is the only phone I've used that impressed me more than the M8.
my note 4 was lag free when i first got it but i started noticing lag after a couple weeks of use..tw cause much of a slowdown

I am happy about note 5, but TBH my Nexus 6 even with dev. preview was smoother. 90% I am smooth sailing however sometimes I have hiccups like text message not showing up til like 30 seconds after the fact and a few force close every now and then. Nothing to complain about, I mean Nexus does have the stupid multi task bug where you switch between apps and and only half the screen shows up

W trust me, fastest phone ive ever used. I didnt even lower my animation down to .5 like i usually do.
Wouldn't surprise me the nexus 4 holding up so well. Nexus lack features, don't have the top tier specs but they "just work" even gnex ran pretty smooth on LP considering it's age and no more official support I say it held it's a lot better than other phones of that time

I agree. I've only had the phone for about 2 days but it is easily the fastest phone I've ever used. Noticeably faster than my wife's S6 which I thought was very fast. Hopefully it will stay that way.
I could not believe my eyes when I saw this. The Note 5 is a spec power house with an ocat-core processor, and 4GB of ram while the Iphone 6 has a measly dual core processor and 1gb of ram.
in another video with the S6 vs the iPhone 6, the S6 had the advantage. the S6 and N5 have the same specs with the N5 having a gig more memory. but where the issue lies, and like he mentions is how the N5 fully closes apps down. i noticed in some other thread on here that the N5 aggressively closes recent apps whereas the S6 does not. maybe it's to help with the battery life. but i assume the test would prove differently if the N5 did not fully close out apps as was mentioned.

use the task switcher instead of clicking icons again...

The S6 has a more aggressive RAM profile than the Note 5. It is more in terms of optimization. iOS while lacking in features in Android, is extremely optimized for their hardware which is something that is difficult for Android which is on devices with a variety of hardware. By optimizing the most out of their hardware, they can achieve these results., something hard for Android to do with fragmentation.
Still, getting a Note 5 in a couple days, so I can't wait.

in that case, it's interesting that the S6 had the advantage in other videos i've seen. also, Android just always seems like there's always more things going on (factor in those widgets) compared to iOS which is like so vanilla.

Please discuss in the thread already created here. Thank you. :highfive:
Hello
I have read many hours about this phone and will probably be my next device, but some questions before I make a final decision.
I have been a HTC user and always tried to give Samsung a chance but after a time the UI got so laggy, it turns me back to HTC with Sense.
This phone will be my Company/job phone and I don't want to make software every month to get it smooth again.
Have Samsung addressed the lag in Touchwiz? Do you have noticed any lag or slowdowns? For me the lags have always started and got worse after some weeks.
Any suggestions or help will make my decision easier.

I've been using it for like 3 weeks now and I never noticed any lag even once! What I've read about is that Samsung is using extensive RAM management so if you open too many applications together, when you switch back to older applications, it reloads instead of resuming the session, never happened to me though but I don't keep much applications open at one time (may be 10 or so at most). You are right, the android devices are always fast when you take it out of the box and gradually start showing lags after a while (specially Samsung devices). However, I have more than 50 applications installed ( I use premium apps only, don't go for apps that load adds) including FPS games, Social Media, Podcasts, Utilities, etc. etc. and didn't notice any lag at all even if I don't kill any background application for days (I tried that). Even with 3 Gigs of RAM, I heard that S6 and S6 Edge doesn't show any lag so I'm assuming S6 Edge+/Note 5 with 4 Gigs of RAM would be better anyway. If you're thinking of getting it for Job/Business purpose, I don't see any problem at all with it.

Thank you mate, it sounds promising.
What is the phone you have used before and can compare with?
for my part, i have used long times :
samsung galaxy S - S2 - S3 - S4
samsung galaxy note 2 - 3 - 4
lg g3
Htc one M8
iphone 4S - 5S - 6plus
And now my new galaxy s6 edge plus !
I can tell you, it's the first time i have the feeling of the smooth experience of an iphone, or htc one m8 in my hands with samsung
Impressive, really (50 apps, premium or not installed)
Imo you can close your eyes and go for it

My daily driver was Note 2 - No phone could beat the battery life of this one
I've used S2, S3, Nexus 4 and Note 4. Never noticed much lag on Note 4 either, but with S6 Edge+, its even faster and responsive (or may be I tell that to myself since I spent $900 on it). Either way, if the budget isn't a constraint, this is a phone to go for this year!

How long have you been with your Edge+?
If it is as smooth as M8 or better i will definitely buy it.
One week only, because it's avaible in france since one week
i will see with some weeks,
but the difference its notable if i compare with the feeling of the firsts weeks of the phone i quote
I was a M8 user for a long time. I wouldn't say it's smoother than HTC (ARHD) but you won't notice any lags on Edge+ As for the battery I used to get around 7 hour SOT on my M8 (Custom kernel & Custom ROM) On here i'm still unrooted I get around 5:30 minutes SOT with texting and few YouTube etc. considering the higher resolution and higher screen resolution it's only natural.
Reassured you won't regret getting S6 Edge+
I will wait two weeks to see if the slow downs will be reported. It's promising to hear no lags, but they usually comes after some weeks.
