I was hoping to start a little project on my N7. I love induction charging and want to set it up on my nexus 7. I was wondering if anyone who has gone through this/know about it/enjoy posting could give me some advice,
Most specifically:
Best dock+backcover combo
Thinnest coil plus chip
Fastest charging
Thanks in advance everybody, can't wait to hear your 2 cents!!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I haven't actually seen anybody fully implement inductive charging yet. However, this guy started doing inductive charging:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/101739011161245720271/posts/fAse7vGmc3q
Well, one easy way of doing it would be to buy a Qi standard inductive charger and a Qi standard inductive charging case (for example, the Palm Pre Touchstone case) and then pull the internals out of the donor case and fit them inside a Nexus 7 case. There's a small amount of soldering required and perhaps some fiddling with the fit, but the components are relatively simple and lay relatively flat. It wouldn't be too hard at all.
Unfortunately, I believe most current Qi charging solutions are relatively low amperage. This would make for a pretty slow charge on the power hungry Nexus 7. Not too bad it you're using it as an overnight charger, but nowhere near as fast as a 2 amp charger. It's possible that you'll find an inductive charger with a higher current output but if you're looking for that it might be easier to build one from scratch,
I did the Touchstone mod on my GNex. It only puts out .56 Amps. Their are kernels with "quick charge" that would let it ramp up to 1 amp but that was it. I am wanting to play with it too, but I'm more thinking of making a dock with POGO pins instead.
I gotta say, they touchstone is great for my GNex. I have a touchstone mounted in my car, so it holds it in place & charges. Occasionally the charge connection gets interrupted (hit a bump, etc...) and it takes 10 seconds to restart. I added additional stronger magnets to my case, but still I don't think the touchstone magnets would do very well holding a tablet instead.
Also, additional magnets screw with your compass...
the touchstone also has a strange angle for watching movies on the tablet.
also i dont know if you can make the induction work with 2amps like the asus charger. (which would be awsome for superfast charging)
If you used the pogo pins for this it would disable the audio if using the correct kernel (see my post in accessories). You would have to modify the kernel to disable it stopping speaker audio out (should be just commenting a few lines though).

The Touchstone is adjustable to whatever angle you want.
I ordered the official Samsung wireless cover from Amazon, slapped it on, and then put my Otterbox Commuter series over it - so far so good, everything fits reasonably well.
I go to put my S5 on a wireless charger and it charges. Then stops charging. Then starts charging again. Then stops again. Over and over it repeats this.
I get to thinking the phone is just too far away, so I take off the hardshell of the Otterbox Commuter. Same thing happens again. So I take off the soft shell - now I'm down to just the naked phone, and it's still charging on and off.
I'm using the blackberry folding blade wires, and the chargers found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...udget-wireless-charger-showdown-5-qi-t2676249
Specifically, the tilted charger and rectangle with LED lights. Both are giving me the exact same on & off problem.
So does anyone know how to fix this? Is it the chargers or something I'm doing? Are the chargers just not generating a strong enough field (if so, which charger can I get that will generate a better field?)
Thanks for any help
EDIT: Clarified that wireless cover is official Samsung

I had the same issue with a cheap receiver I bought off ebay. The receiver was junk. I took it out of the phone and dropped it on the mat and used a multimeter to check my voltages and never got consistent readings. Tried again with the same chinese mat and the official back and no issues at all.

I am having similar issues using a Palm wireless charger I custom made. I believe the issue is the connection from the cover to the pins on the device next to the battery. I am going to try adjusting it. Also, putting the phone in power saving mode before wireless charging seems to help. Think it may have to do with the wireless charging coil not providing enough amps for the phone to keep up. Trying a different cable/wall charger may help.

It could be the output isn't high enough. For the official mat you need to have a 3 amp charger for it to work. And if the output is too low, the phone may be getting confused because it is detecting a current, but not enough of one for it to be registering that it is charging. I have a car charger that has a 1 amp and a 2 amp setting, and when I try it on the 1 amp setting I get the same issue where it connects and disconnects. 2 amp and I get 0 issues.
I have a similar issue. I'm using the official Samsung S-View Wireless Charging Cover with the Nexus 5 wireless Charger. I get nothing when I put them together. I believe the output from the charger is around 2 amps and it works perfectly with my Nexus 5 (surprise, surprise...) Not sure why I don't get any response whatsoever...

I'm using a blackberry folding blade charger, the stated output is 1.8 amps, and my Samsung charger that came with the phone is 2.0 amps; both give me the on/off problem. Is 3 amps really the key? Where do you find one?

Sorry meant to say 2 amp. But you may want to test your mat and receiver and see if it really putting out the 1 amp the other thread said it was supposed to. If you are getting an output of less than 1 amp that the other thread says it should be then that is probably your issue. Unfortunately I'm not able to measure the outputs on either of my mats to give you an idea until later this evening when I get out of work.

I think you may be right; it may well be the mats I have are just junk, both of them, unfortunately.
I opened up the back of the phone, and brushed off the wireless charging prongs, just to make sure they weren't dirty. Put cover back on, put otterbox commuter case back on.
Put it on the wireless charger, it cycles on/off again and again, about once per second. Take off the hard shell, leaving just the soft shell, and it cycles on/off about once every five seconds - that is, the interval actually got longer. Take off the soft shell, down to a naked phone, and works after cycling on/off about 5 times, then it settles down and stops cycling.
On another charger, the tilted qi charger, it'll charge if the phone is naked, but if I put even the soft shell of the Otterbox Commuter on it, it'll cycle a few times then just not charge at all.
I'm not sure this is a connection problem with the prongs, or a problem with the wire/charger. I think it has something to do with the field that the qi charger is generating. Since I don't know jack about the qi standard, can anyone tell me if all qi fields are equal? That is, do higher quality qi chargers produce a larger or strong field than cheap units?
Like I said in the OP, these are all very cheap chargers, $15 at most, and I'm wondering if that may be the cause.

I use the 2A charger that came with the phone with the CHOETECH pads. The insert is the CHOETECH mat inside the cover. The pad is rated 2.1A input, 1A output. My phone cycles on-off occasionally when the phone hits 100%. I use the Otterbox Defender case.

Interesting, so could the problem be due to just using a cheap generic? Seems that the cheap ones may be generating a smaller or weaker field?
Just wanted to post an update - bought a more expensive charger, one with 3 coils instead of the 1 that was in my other two - and now it charges fine, right through my Otterbox Commuter case.
So to anyone else having this problem - the field generated doesn't seem to be big enough to penetrate the Otterbox Commuter with just one coil, you need 3 or so.
EDIT: Specifially, it was the Cheotech Qi wireless charger, rectangle with LED

it's not the problem with the coil, they give out the same current, it's because the angled charger is a cheap and nasty one, and the flat one is just a fake one, the official one cost alot more.
3 coils only give you a wider surface detection, the current is just the same as a single coil or a 7 coils.
The 3 coils charger you have is a rebadge of powerqi T300 which is a highly recommended one.

So, I'm not sure what the issue is here. I purchased the official Qi charging cover for the S5 and the official Mini Charging Pad.
Every time I try to charge my phone on the pad, it goes for an hour or so then the light starts flashing orange. Charging pad works fine with my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7.
Any ideas? I've seen other scattered reports of this on the web but no solutions at all.
I'm getting the same issue and I thought it was just poor placement on the mat. But I have tried it placed in different places on the pad, none of which made a difference. I also thought it was possibly the Diztronic cover reducing the efficiency of the charge, so I removed it to charge the phone. Nope, same issue. Using the supplied cable and the 2A Samsung charger supplied with the S5.
The problem comes when I set it away to charge overnight, and I wake up to find there's no full charge (once worried when it only had 36%, not enough for my day).
Every time it fails, the orange indicator flashes on the Samsung charge pad.
It's starting to annoy me
I use a similar setup - mini charger with sview charging back.
The orange light indicates not enough power getting to the pad - try changing your cable. I'm using a blackberry playbook charger 1.8A - 5 dollars on amazon to power it now and it works fine. I'm about 6 months into it..

I was using the supplied wall wart and cable that came with the Mini Pad. Just took the thing back and bought a Tylt Vu instead. Charges perfect.
Kinda sad that a Samsung Qi pad and a Samsung Qi backplate on a Samsung GS5 doesn't work properly.
there is already a thread on the oem cover and charging transmitter, also i have posted within the thread about this problem.

orange led means error, flashing green led means less than 2.0a power supply is used, lit green led mean a 2.0a power supply is used.
it's a detection or compatiblity issue with the transmitter and receiver, whether it's oem or 3rd party product used.

Don't waste your time trying to fix the problem. Its an issue with the Samsung mini charging pad. I replaced it with a 3rd party 3-coil charger and all the problems I encountered (charging error, erratic charging performance resulting in constant waking up of the phone, etc) disappeared.

Same here, and the same recommendation from me. The Mini Charger is junk.
The mini charger has compatiblity problem, works fine with my nokia lumia 930, and S5 using a yijieneng receiver, but has problems with it's own qi cover and a few other receiver.
Just about to get my Priv (FINALLY!), buying stuffs to armor it up - quick chargers, cases etc..
So here is the question: as there is no official wireless charger for Priv, which 3rd-party wireless charger available is best for it?

I don't have priv yet, but planning to buy one in a few days. These are the wireless chargers I was looking at:
1) Anker
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ue&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_5&smid=A294P4X9EWVXLJ
2) Spigen
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ue&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_6&smid=A2SFKRF5TPZMT5
3) MoKo
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ue&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_7&smid=A2VT4H683M5NNA
4) Choetech
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ue&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_8&smid=A1NCVKF8LXGAA9
#3 has AC adapter included, but that is about it. I want it to be like a stand, so it will be easier to see what if I get a text, call...
Not sure if you bought one yet, but I've had mine for a few days and I can tell you the wireless chargers that will work well with this will be a select few. It seems the coil in the PRIV is near the very bottom of the back, so chargers like the spigen listed above (Which I have and use with my Nexus 7 LTE) don't work well at all. It continuously connects and disconnects because the coil is so low on the PRIV that it doesn't line up well. I also have the most recent Samsung QI charger that I got for my Note 5, and that one actually works pretty well because you can set the PRIV on it towards the very bottom of the device. Another example is trying to us the Nexus QI charging orb, which the PRIV won't work well with because putting it on there so close to the bottom causes the device to fall over the top because it's top heavy. So long story short a pad or flat surface charger will most likely be best as it allows you to position the device properly. Hopefully this helps!
PS: This is the best device I've had in a long time, and I've owned most current and past flagships. Reminds me of my days on webOS with my Palm Pres...but a million times better!

My Priv is arriving tomorrow I will use your recommendation when I will be buying wireless charger... It is just when using the pad, the device is laying down instead of being vertical so I could see and read messages...
By the way, have you tried to put your Priv in landscape on the wireless charger such as spigen?

I just asked users on amazon if some of the chargers do work well with Priv. Will reply here if I get any answer. Have you tried to put your Priv in landscape on the wireless charger such as spigen? The reason I asked is because I read that some user had issues with some phones which would disconnect/re-connect, but when placed horizontally on the charger, all was well.

Yes it does wort of work. The problem is that the coil is so low on the Priv that it falls of when trying to put it on there horizontal. Same with the Nexus orb. It's kind of annoying. One solution with the spigen is to put something under the priv when it's on there horizontal so it meets up with the higher coil as the spigen has three coils.

Do you know if the main difference is the "fast charging" and if Priv might benefit from the below charger vs yours?
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Fast-...8755&sr=1-9&keywords=samsung+wireless+charger
As far as I know the PRIV is not compatible with Fast Wireless Charging, but I'm not sure. The issue is simply the placement of the PRIV's wireless coil in the back of the phone. It's nearly at the very bottom of the phone so it doesn't align well with some wireless chargers. Most phones have the coil in the middle of the back.

Looks like Fast Charging is for samsung phones. I found couple of interesting chargers which are vertical:

Anyone tried the Samsung wireless charger? I was trying with the Samsung wireless charger for S6 but it doesn't work...
Just found out my device is STV100-3 which doesn't support wireless charging.... Darn darn darn..... Ahhhhhhhhh
It should work with any QI wireless charger, assuming you have a model with wireless charging built in.
UPDATE: Contrary to my previous posts...the spigen charger referenced in this thread DOES work with the PRIV. I tried it again last night with a different cable and charger and it does work perfectly. It must have been an issue with the cable and charger I was using with it previously not providing enough voltage or something. Sorry for the incorrect information.
Also, I can confirm it does work with the Samsung chargers, but the PRIV's coil is at the very bottom so you have to line up the very bottom of the phone onto the charger. Hope this helps.

Moko Standup Charger
My priv has the official blackberry leather flip case, and I'm only interested in chargers that work with the phone in the case.
I just got the Moko stand up Qi charger a few days ago and it does NOT work reliably with the Priv in a case. It seems to work some of the time, but the night before last it charged to 60% and stopped. It's pretty easy to reproduce this behavior since it's never charged to 100%. One strange thing is that even when it only charged to 60%, it's pretty warm between the Priv and the stand. I know lipo lifetime is accelerated with heat, so I don't think using this, even if charges to 60% is a great idea..
I have a cheap square samsung charger that seems to work better, but you have to find the sweet spot.
I'm still looking for one that is 100%. Eventually, I want two, one for my desk and one for my car (air vent) but I'm definitely not going to try the Moko car version.
EDIT: I made shim (out of cardboard for now) to raise the phone up in the Moko dock by 1/2 inch. It charged to 100% for the first time! The phone is still pretty warm (about 94 degrees F) but that might be the way all of the Qi chargers work.

The LG v20 does support wireless charging... At least a according to LG's site... The back cover does not have contact points because it's already made from metal... And wireless charging is the worst thing to do to your phone... Just saying.

I've never seen any proof that rhe V20 has wireless charging. What the are you talking about the back already being metal? That doesnt explain why the phone lace the charging pins that are needed. How is a slow charge more damaging than a quick charge? I guess that the coils can generate heat but....

I'm still waiting for the person to supply the link that calls out the wireless charging.
Think we'll be waiting a long time.
The back cover is metal, therefore the entire back is a conductor... All of the spots you see here are contact points to the phone frame, the two major ones are near the camera opening.

What's the link to the web page you said had information to the V20 supporting wireless charging?
Actually read that best buy canceled orders of wireless charging back plates for most phones after the note 7 fiasco. Also sorry, the two contacts near the camera bezel are for nfc... The other spots were contacts are made were to be for wireless charging back plates, the pads on the back cover are insulation so the contacts do not touch the metal on the stock back plate, and lg customer service has now back pedaled on there stance of it being wireless charging compatible. So it seems it is, but it won't be released due to concern of a Samsung type disaster.
And yes, the heat generated by wireless charging could reduce battery life by over 50% if you use it exclusively. Why I said it was horrible for batteries (Lithium)
Supposedly, the note 7 problem was due to the battery being made to thin, which cause the chemical separation plate in side the battery to fail from heat, and or damage from drops, and being struck. After it failed, the chemicals mix and boom.

The only proof I was able to find now it a screen shot of an lg reps conversation on reddit... All the stuff I read months ago is now gone... Google it and click on the reddit link to see this pic. Other than that it seems that everything else is gone...

You realize that you made a statement about the back plate and the completely retracted everything you said in the second response. I'm not trying to be an asshole here but please make sure that you have your facts straight before posting it.
There is is no proof that those 10 pins are for wireless charging. A giant metal door can not wireless charge. You would need a coil for that. Controlled resistance and magnetic fields. I'm not saying that the pins are not for wireless charging though. If there is wireless charging, the back will have to be replaced.

I said I was sorry, I was wrong... I am not stupid, that is why I said I'm sorry... Furthermore, if you read the damn post you quoted, I also stated the the contact we're insulated from the metal door... And no there isn't any proof, because as I stated, anything and everything that was posted by LG or on any LG site now has been removed... Just in case you missed it I also said that the only thing now available is on reddit.. But since you just feel the need to let everyone know you're here, I'll stop this post now so you can rebuke my post rebuking your post that rebuked a post I already rebuked myself on...
I now pass the mic to you Captain Redundancy...

It's the internet, don't get an aneurysm over a simple post. Reddit posts are hardly facts. All the other proof that you claim to have magically disappeared is just another internet post that I don't take serious. Calm down.
It's not my fault that you post false information then realize how nonsensical it was less than an hour afterward. You then get angry at me for calling you out. Are you going to apologize for that information about wireless charging heating up batteries more than quick charging? The heat is only generated at the coils themselves. The batteries remain much cooler as the energy input to them are low.
I've dropped the mic and walked out of the building. It up to you if you want to pick it up and cry to yourself. I will not destroy this thread anymore.

Lmao, yeah I'm so upset... Once again, I corrected my mistake and apologized for my misplaced statements long before you even read any of it... I know I messed up and corrected myself. You did absolutely nothing but acted like the self absorbed douche canoe that you are... I also stated that the only lg info left is a guys screen shot from reddit... Which by no means is a statement of fact... I only said it is the only thing you can find anywhere remotely tied to LG regarding wireless charging... I could honestly care less if you believe me or not, I could care less if my v20 ever gets wireless charging or not... In my opinion, and the opinion of many others wireless charging is bad for the life of Lithium batteries... Besides that, I have two extra batteries, and a damn cradle... Which I rarely use as is, plus a charge pack I carry for my speaker... I was reading this thread, got curious, did some research, and was misinformed, did some more research and found stuff which seems more accurate, yet is still inconclusive... So in closing, instead of quoting my posts, and my self correction of my post, why don't you post something meaningful, since you claim to have all the damn answers and not one shread of proof. At least I have the balls to say my first post was wrong... You aren't telling me a damn thing I didn't already know, or admit to for that matter... I also stated numerous times that this was everything I could find... So have at it Internet tough guy... Rant over, everyone have a wonderful night... (except you, you suck) ?I'm out.

The problem with the current receivers is that they max out at 1 amp at 5v of input to the phone. You'll get an error that states "Charging Slowly" Use the charger and cable that were provided with this phone, or check the cable is properly connected." On clearing the error it will charge but... huh... slowly. I don't believe it's damaged the battery as it still gets me through a day. It's just a pain having to clear the error. So if it eventually damages the battery or shortens it's life - I'll get a new battery. As we all know they're easily replaced.

I've said I'd never buy a phone without wireless charging... well - here I am. It's too convenient to plop your phone on the charger on your nightstand, your desk, and in your car. I'm hoping we get wireless charging as this is the only thing that can get me to change out my V20 (as of today). Love the phone.
If it's hard on the battery, I'll replace the battery - which we can do and many others can't.

Hi Bob,
Good day! Thank you for getting in touch with LG Email Services. We appreciate your continued support for our products.
We understand your concerns and it's our pleasure to assist you on this matter. For now, whether or not the LG V20 will be made compatible with wireless charging still remains to be seen. Technically the phone will need an attachment or special back cover to enable wireless charging support but, the last we heard from our product specialists, there are still no plans to make this accessory available currently.
The available OEM folio cases for this phone model do not have wireless charging support. You may see these on our LG.com website:
lg.com/us/phone-cases
We hope this information will be useful to you. Please do not hesitate to email us back for further assistance or for any other concerns. We’re more than happy to help you.
Feel free to contact us also via Live Chat or Phone by dialing 1-800-793-8896.
Thank you and have a blessed day!
Respectfully,
Daisy

I too said the same thing--coming from an S7 Edge and many others with wireless charging, I was in love with it. However, I rarely used my wireless charging because QuickCharge is so fast! I can bring my phone to a full charge a phone in about an hour, before bed, so I don't need to drop it on the charging pad all night. Same goes for the morning before work. I bought 10ft USB cables on aliexpress.com and because of this phone, just bought microUSB to USB-C connectors for all my cables. They had a 5-pack for $8, I'm pretty happy. Even my car charger is an Anker QC 3.0 compatible, so it charges just as quickly.
Unlike with the Samsung, it'll be nice to have a second battery for road trips. There is a big difference between swapping a second battery over carrying around a charging brick and having your phone connected while it charges slowly back up when you're sight-seeing.
At this point I guess it's unlikely that a 3rd party will make a proper sticker either - the kind that does not use the USB port. It's really unfortunate that LG dropped the ball with the back cover. I got the V20 on sale for half price, but really considering going back to Note 4 while I still can. V20 just seems like too much of a trade off in features.

Found this cover that claims to have wireless charging functionality. But their own pictures show that it's just plastic - no receiver, no contacts visible.
