Observation: Overheating AC Adapters

I like many people was having issues where the AC adapter would randomly stop charging my tablet. Someones it would start working again soon after and sometimes almost an entire day would go by before it started working again.
Tried the freezer trick with no results. Was going to send it back to Asus when I noticed 2 things.
1. The adapter was very not every time it stopped charging.. hotter than it usually gets when functioning correctly.
2. It only ever stops charging when i'm using a usb 3.0 extension cable.
To test this i stopped using the extension able for about 2 weeks and the adapter functioned properly the entire time. Then last night I reconnected the extension cable and within 5 minutes of of being plugged in charging stopped and the adapter was extremely hot. This obviously leads me to believe that the extension cable is in some way effecting the adapters voltage or something and causing it to malfunction. So I'm curious as to how many of the others who having issues are also using extension cables.

Not the voltage the current the more current it has to push the hotter its going to get and the chargers for these are not designed for extensions they where designed to be small and charge the tf even then there at there limit

I also was having trouble with over heating and have been using an 3.0 extension cable. I will stop using it and report back.

its a design flaw with the ac addapters and its one of the reasons that the cable that ships with the transformer is so short

I was just using the cable as is with no extension and it died on my twice. I now have it rigged up to charge from my PC's PSU and only use the adapter when I'm not at my house.

My charger melted my damn usb cable. Thats how hot it got..
I wasnt using the extension cable at the time.
The adaptor would always warm up, which i read was normal. A few days ago, however, i felt some heat on the cable itself.When i reached to the connector, i noticed it had literally melted the rubber casing off the wire.
Im in the process of sending it back today

Just had my second charger die on me! I was charging my Dock and Tablet during class from 2:50-4:10 and when I unplugged it the charger was pretty hot. I went back home and connected the TF to my rigged up PSU charger and then went to class at 6:10 and plugged in the charger and unsurprisingly it wouldn't charge!

Ive heard reports of people solving these problems by swapping round the mains pins ( I guess only in countries that use 2 pin outlets, UK have 3 )

I am sure this will sound nuts but, put the wall charger in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Please do not forget the plastic bag. There is a thermal heat fuse inside the brick that needs to be reset. If it is still working the cold will make it reconnect and bring the brick back to working order.
You should make a DIY charger by following "DevCake" thread on DIY AC and DC chargers for the TF.

I just do not understand why we would have to go out of our way for their crappy idea of a charger. I understand the idea of not allowing aftermarket chargers because they want the money for the chargers but i mean if you do that then at least make something worth having besides giving us a heater...does this remind anyone of the rrod( red ring of death) for the xbox... to much of a hurry to send out their product they didnt really test EVERY aspect of their device...this makes me sad..and then need to send it back and what not taking up more of our time then not being able to use the tablet because your chargers going back... i wish customer service was better....that is all

but i have found that if you charge the dock and tab separately there are no problems with the adapter. and besides charging while the tab is docked into the keyboard is kinda a waste as its charging the keyboard dock, and at the same time its discharging and trying to charge the tab at the same time. hence causing the strain on the adapter.
besides charging both at once will just kill the keyboard dock in the long run

Mine doesn't speed charge my Transformer even without the extension cable. Maybe I'll do some testing with that though and check the heat, since the damn thing doesn't work anymore anyways. Though I might not get any results because of that

There are many problems with the charger, many different problems.
I barely use my dock, so I have only been charging my TF standalone. Still stopped working though late last week.

Hmmm, issues here as well...
Charger stopped working at times and then start working again... Now it's not working and sticks with that plan. Pluggin in the charger with the TF turned off makes it boot so something IS happening, it doesn't charge though.
Luckily I have another charger (no original asus but using another adapter + usb-cablethingie) so I can atleast charge it, but still. Was thinking of buying another asus adapter (the travelpack) but really doubting it now if it's a general issue.
Will try the freezer trick anyway and some other stuff... Quite annoying though (for an otherwise excellent product).

i thought the accessories that comes with the TF are all covered under a one year warranty?
and the problem with the adapters suddenly dying is probably the capacitors in the charger or the stepdown transformer in it anyone had a chance to open one yet?

An Asus UK tech support guy actually told me not to charge both the tablet and dock at the same time. Pretty poor if you ask me. They just went silent when I pushed the matter.
They have compromised the design in their desire to make a fashionably tiny charger.

Actually it is charging, but not with the voltage it requires for the "quick charge". Mine does the same thing. If you turn off the screen or turn off the TF and leave it plugged in, it charges at ~3%/hour. Not very useful if you're a heavy user but better than nothing until you get a new charger.

I may be really lucky: the only time I've ever had a failure to charge, has been fixed by taking off the plug and snapping it back.

Now you mention this, it indeed does... slow but it does charge. Damnit, luckily I have another charger but this annoys the crap out of me.

I'm going to get another charger tomorrow when I go pick up a joystick for Battlefield 3
Then I'll contact Asus I guess and get it RMA'ed. Going to try and get some free shipping out of them. Sometimes I am successful sometimes not haha

[Q] Nexus7 charger with other devices?

I just got a Nexus 7 a couple of days ago and of course I thought any USB charger would work. When it didn't charge on the charger I keep plugged in for all purpose charging, I resorted to Google to see what's up. I would love to have a single charger that works for everything. Having looked through many pages of discussion about this I did not see the answer to my question, whether the Nexus 7 charger will charge my other devices, phone, ASUS Transformer, etc, I know that the data pins on this charger are shorted, but does that prevent it from properly charging my phone, for example? Do the data pins being shorted affect it's ability as a general charger?
Especially for travel, having to carry a single charger would be preferred.
I ran into a similar problem with a friend's Nook Color, only there the problem seems to be a proprietary cable. Even in that case we discovered that a good charger (iPAD version) and a standard cable would work, just pretty slowly.
I may have missed the answer in my searching, and if so, please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I haven't tried to search, but I have used my Nexus 7 charger to charge my Acer phone and my Logitech K800 keyboard and H600 headset.
I can't remember if I used the cable that came with the charger. I have a stack of micro USB connectors around. I try to bin any that are power only. Useless bit of wire. Maybe that is why things are amiss at your end.

I've charged my friends HTC X One with the Nexus charger. Worked fine.

Haven't even taken the nexus charger out of the box. Been using my Samsung chargers from my SII with no issues. Hope I don't have a problem using the auto charger.

Guessing the charger you're trying to use isn't providing edd enough current... The standard charger puts out 2A (2000mA) when standard USB is 500mA and many chargers are 1A... That said no charger/cable combo I've tried has failed to charge (just sometimes it's glacially slow if its a 0.5A/1A charger)

Galaxy S5 wireless charging issue

Hey all,
I got the galaxy s5 about a month ago and went online and picked up a generic wireless receiver and charging pad. Every time I put the phone on to charge I would get a charge and then disconnect and it would keep doing that. Well I thought ill just get the official Samsung galaxy s5 wireless cover and went online found some good reviews of a tiled qi wireless charging pad. I got it all today and same thing. Move it around and still unable to get it to work. Tired multiple usb cords and still nothing. Only thing left to try is to get the Samsung charging pad. Anybody have any ideas?

I had issues with low cost eBay Chinese charger pad, just the same symptoms as you describe. No issues with the Nokia or Samsung Charging pads though.
Currently rocking the Samsung OEM Charging back with the Nokia FatBoy Charging pad without any issues.

Thanks that did it. Went and got a Nokia charging pad at Verizon and works like a charm. I'm never lucky enough to get the cheap ones to work!

Found another solution for low cost chargers
- remove the top cover and put your phone directly on the transmitter coil ->> the problem was resolved

Qi charging problems

I ordered the official Samsung wireless cover from Amazon, slapped it on, and then put my Otterbox Commuter series over it - so far so good, everything fits reasonably well.
I go to put my S5 on a wireless charger and it charges. Then stops charging. Then starts charging again. Then stops again. Over and over it repeats this.
I get to thinking the phone is just too far away, so I take off the hardshell of the Otterbox Commuter. Same thing happens again. So I take off the soft shell - now I'm down to just the naked phone, and it's still charging on and off.
I'm using the blackberry folding blade wires, and the chargers found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...udget-wireless-charger-showdown-5-qi-t2676249
Specifically, the tilted charger and rectangle with LED lights. Both are giving me the exact same on & off problem.
So does anyone know how to fix this? Is it the chargers or something I'm doing? Are the chargers just not generating a strong enough field (if so, which charger can I get that will generate a better field?)

I had the same issue with a cheap receiver I bought off ebay. The receiver was junk. I took it out of the phone and dropped it on the mat and used a multimeter to check my voltages and never got consistent readings. Tried again with the same chinese mat and the official back and no issues at all.

I am having similar issues using a Palm wireless charger I custom made. I believe the issue is the connection from the cover to the pins on the device next to the battery. I am going to try adjusting it. Also, putting the phone in power saving mode before wireless charging seems to help. Think it may have to do with the wireless charging coil not providing enough amps for the phone to keep up. Trying a different cable/wall charger may help.

It could be the output isn't high enough. For the official mat you need to have a 3 amp charger for it to work. And if the output is too low, the phone may be getting confused because it is detecting a current, but not enough of one for it to be registering that it is charging. I have a car charger that has a 1 amp and a 2 amp setting, and when I try it on the 1 amp setting I get the same issue where it connects and disconnects. 2 amp and I get 0 issues.

I have a similar issue. I'm using the official Samsung S-View Wireless Charging Cover with the Nexus 5 wireless Charger. I get nothing when I put them together. I believe the output from the charger is around 2 amps and it works perfectly with my Nexus 5 (surprise, surprise...) Not sure why I don't get any response whatsoever...

I'm using a blackberry folding blade charger, the stated output is 1.8 amps, and my Samsung charger that came with the phone is 2.0 amps; both give me the on/off problem. Is 3 amps really the key? Where do you find one?

Sorry meant to say 2 amp. But you may want to test your mat and receiver and see if it really putting out the 1 amp the other thread said it was supposed to. If you are getting an output of less than 1 amp that the other thread says it should be then that is probably your issue. Unfortunately I'm not able to measure the outputs on either of my mats to give you an idea until later this evening when I get out of work.

I think you may be right; it may well be the mats I have are just junk, both of them, unfortunately.
I opened up the back of the phone, and brushed off the wireless charging prongs, just to make sure they weren't dirty. Put cover back on, put otterbox commuter case back on.
Put it on the wireless charger, it cycles on/off again and again, about once per second. Take off the hard shell, leaving just the soft shell, and it cycles on/off about once every five seconds - that is, the interval actually got longer. Take off the soft shell, down to a naked phone, and works after cycling on/off about 5 times, then it settles down and stops cycling.
On another charger, the tilted qi charger, it'll charge if the phone is naked, but if I put even the soft shell of the Otterbox Commuter on it, it'll cycle a few times then just not charge at all.
I'm not sure this is a connection problem with the prongs, or a problem with the wire/charger. I think it has something to do with the field that the qi charger is generating. Since I don't know jack about the qi standard, can anyone tell me if all qi fields are equal? That is, do higher quality qi chargers produce a larger or strong field than cheap units?
Like I said in the OP, these are all very cheap chargers, $15 at most, and I'm wondering if that may be the cause.

I use the 2A charger that came with the phone with the CHOETECH pads. The insert is the CHOETECH mat inside the cover. The pad is rated 2.1A input, 1A output. My phone cycles on-off occasionally when the phone hits 100%. I use the Otterbox Defender case.

Interesting, so could the problem be due to just using a cheap generic? Seems that the cheap ones may be generating a smaller or weaker field?

Just wanted to post an update - bought a more expensive charger, one with 3 coils instead of the 1 that was in my other two - and now it charges fine, right through my Otterbox Commuter case.
So to anyone else having this problem - the field generated doesn't seem to be big enough to penetrate the Otterbox Commuter with just one coil, you need 3 or so.
EDIT: Specifially, it was the Cheotech Qi wireless charger, rectangle with LED

it's not the problem with the coil, they give out the same current, it's because the angled charger is a cheap and nasty one, and the flat one is just a fake one, the official one cost alot more.
3 coils only give you a wider surface detection, the current is just the same as a single coil or a 7 coils.
The 3 coils charger you have is a rebadge of powerqi T300 which is a highly recommended one.

Qi wireless charging

Has any one any experience with wireless charging on the Yotaphone 2? It supports the Qi standard but I've not ever had any device that can be charged wireless so I don't know what to expect.
There are some cheap chargers on ebay so I may get one to experiment with but wonder what others are using, how long a charge takes? is there a tiny sweet spot to get it to work? does it get hot? Any compatability issues?

Hi there,
Yeah actually I got one for my YotaPhone 2, it's ADATA Elite CE700.
First I have to say I was very disappointed because apparently you can only wireless charging the YotaPhone2 with the main screen facing up! Also you should know that the spot where Qi located is a bit small (3cm in height in the middle of the EPD Screen), but that also depends on the type of wireless charger you would use. Something like Tylt Vu would Support more area thus its more hassle free.
It's also good to know that with wireless charging you won't get Quick Charging anymore. Because In order to do that you must use the MicroUSB port. But again how long a single charge takes depends the type of the Wireless Charger and the amount of output current it has which most of them are 1~1.5A.
For your last concern, any Qi Wireless Charger will do but try to get one of the Tylt Vu. It has the best reviews. And the phone won't get hot during wireless charging if you must know.
And something which I'm not sure whether its my wireless charger or it's general, is when the battery is 100% the charging won't stop, unlike the normal charging with dedicated adapter which cut the current when the charging is complete.

Hi, thanks for your detailed reply, I've now ordered two different generic chargers off amazon to experiment with, they are coming from China I think but were less than a tenner, I'll report back on these after ive used them for a bit.
It seems less than ideal for me to have to charge with the EPD facing down but I guess this is an engineering limitation. I'm sure there would be advantages and disadvantages of each side facing up during wireless charging.

I recently bought the Nokia DT903 wireless charging plate.
It works effortlessly with the Nexus 5. I can pick it up and place it back for charging with no connection worries.
With the Yotaphone 2 it does work, but it has to be in EXACTLY the right spot.... I'm talking millimetre precision here.... it becomes really frustrating to use and spoils one of the key benefits of wireless charging.

That's what is worrying me about Qi charging, I like the idea of wireless charging for the convenience, I work shifts and fiddling with the usb cable when I get in can disturb my partner, just being able to lay it on my night stand would be great, but sometimes I check the time on my phone in the middle of the night, or get up for the loo and nudge the charging cable and move the phone and if its really fussy about how it sits on the charger then I could end up with the phone not being charged overnight.
The ADATA Elite CE700 mentioned by Parisabs4 above looks like a good solution as it is adjustable and with the phone sitting on the cradle it is hopefully easier to hit the sweet spot.

QI charging experience
Okay so I've now tried 3 different Qi wireless charging plates and I have found that all of them exhibit the same problems whilst attempting to charge my Yotaphone 2
In the picture there are 2 single coil chargers and one triple coil charger (the one that is not flat) they are budget models, costing between £4 and £7 on Amazon.
I can get the Yotaphone to begin charging correctly on all three chargers, the phone says it is charging and the qi devices LED blinks to confirm charging. After 10 - 15 seconds the Yotaphone & chargers will stop charging, the indicators on the phone and charges indicate that charging has stopped. After a couple of seconds charging will recommence for about 15 seconds and the stop again, this cycle repeats for a few times then charging stops all together. Lifting the Yotaphone off and then returning to the charger will recommence charging.
My conclusions are that
My device has a faulty wireless charging receiver. (This is unlikely as im on my second device with the same symptoms after an RMA for a previous fault)
The charging software in the Yotaphone is buggy.
The Yotaphone is not fully compatible with the QI standard.
The Qi chargers I am using are not powerful enough for the Yotaphone. (Unlikely as I've now tried 3 different chargers but they were cheap!)
Has anyone else experienced this problem or is using a charger that is proving reliable?
I'm tempted to try the official wireless charging block as it ought to be compatible with the Yotaphone but its £40 wasted if not (although it can charge via a usb port too)
WHY IS NOTHONG EVER EASY IN THE TECH WORLD!!!!

The "old" Samsung S-Charger does not work either.
I got the following white list from the Yota support:
WCP-400 LG, Nexus5
WCP-300 LG, Nexus5

Thanks for that info, I've ordered a Nokia DT-601 from the whitelist, fingers crossed!
As a footnote I have found my tablet charger (a 2.1amp samsung) works with one of my qi charging plates to charge the yotaphone but any other 2.1amp charger exhibits the same problems as the regular 1 amp chargers I've been trying to power the qi plates. Also I've discovered the Yotaphone will not charge from the usb socket in my car but any other device I connect to the socket charges fine, this is one flakey device!

yota releasing their own brand wireless, qi charger (has its own 4000mah battery) fairly soon I think. will be priced about £32

I bought a Nokia-601 (£12.99 of Amazon) an it works perfectly, I've just charged from 35% to 100% with no issues. It even comes with its own 1.5amp mains usb charger
I'm happy happy happy now

I bought a cheap nameless one, have yet to receive it, I hope it will work in combination with a powerful adapter. Anyone got these cheap (5 USD) chargers working with their phone?

Another good QI charger for YP2 is/are the ones that IKEA sells. They have several models, but all seem based on the same platform powered by a 19V DC adapter.
I couldn't get any cheap QI chargers to work reliably with my YP2, but the IKEA chargers work great. They have some margin in positioning the phone on it, and prices start at around $30/EUR 25, so not to bad. I cannibalized the electronics from a JYSSEN to transplant them into a custom 3D printed charger case.

Does anyone have any experience using this Samsung 2A charger with the Yotaphone 2?

UPDATE: Never mind, I ended up buying the Nokia DT-900 since it's on the official list of supported chargers.

I bought my first wireless charger , a cheapo one from China just to see how they are. Cheap as in 4 USD. It does work but exhibits behaviour like described above. All night only charges it a little and the on light is not on much. I thought it was a problem with a cheap charger, but maybe not, it sounds like Yotaphone firmware. I don't have any problem finding the sweet spot.
I was reading about new LG fast charger that is coming out soon, first ever fast 15w wireless charger. But of course it will be expensive .

I bought an 3-coil-qi-charger-stand from China (eBay article 381639407985) about 10€. It works perfekt.
Cheap Single coil charger work also, but only if you place the Yotaphone at the exactly right position ( only 2mm tolerance). As the coil inside the 2,80€ single-chip-computers charger from China is often not places correctly inside the housing, you first have to correct that.
So tripple-coil is to be prefered.
One nice thing: Charging via QI and USB-OTG works fine at the same time on Yotaphone. You can put the Yotaphone 90 degree rotated on the 3-coil-charger-stand and watching Videos from a USB-Stick.
I even think about building an own small OTG-Adapter, using a extreme small micro-usb-connector (like used in universal QI reciver-plates), a very small USB-Micro-SD-Reader, some wire and epoxy. The SD-Reader will be placed on the lower frame of the ePaper. I use a bumper and would cut the neccassary space out of it. So I could build an nearly invissible (with bumper) SD-Card-slot. 64GB extra space is nice...

I'm using a Nokia DT-910 that I originally bought for my Nexus 5 a few years back.. works just fine with the YotaPhone 2..
No need to be careful with positioning or anything like that.. just put the phone on it and that's it.
The benefit of a charger like this is that you can actually see the screen while charging instead of it being flat on the table like some other models.

Or you can easily make one yourself by taping a wireless charger to a powerbank

In that case there is a wire, between PB and Wireless charger. �� so NOT wireLESS, lol

Can I use a QI Wireless power bank to charge the Yotaphone in my pocket?
Sometimes my phone runs out of juice. Is it possible to buy a power bank with wireless charging capabilities and use it to tirelessly charge my phone, by placing the power bank in my pocket next to my phone?
