Using the XDA forums, discussions, participants, and ROM/custom development as a barometer, I am surprised by the underwhelming Edge popularity.
When compared to the historical Note 2, 3, and 4 (and considering the pace of dedicated forums, ROM development, and discussion), the Edge has not nearly tracked the pace. Since release, we have had relatively little discussion, no carrier-specific forums (yet), and very few ROMs to speak of.
I would have thought that all the XDA geeks would have flocked to the Edge as opposed to Note 4. I guess I was wrong. Still, I do not understand why more people have not adopted the Edge.
Edit: At least we got root quickly. For that, I am very thankful.
It's not even released yet in most countries so that's why? The UK version I've ordered direct from Samsung UK doesn't get dispatched until 18th Dec. Online stores reckon early Jan. And then there is the price.
note edge is 399$ on 2 years contract. plus taxes, plus 40$ upgrade fee on att. that's 520$ on a phone with contract ! eBay is selling the edge over 900$. you can get a note4 less than 600$ on eBay.

2 days after i ordered my edge i saw some known devs pop up on n4 threads and i knew i was in for a lonely ride.
But i still love my edge.

But same price as Iphone 6 Plus 64gb once you add an extra 32gb Micro SD. The Edge is not that much more expensive than other large screen devices except the LG G3 which is less than £300 Sim Free on the UK.

The comparison is to the "pace" set by previous responses to the Note platform. Any other comparison isn't applicable. The Edge is more expensive and in limited supply, so the response is slow.
If we want more support, why not start a fund to pay for it? May work depending on how many people are going to donate.
Niche device, look at how the Note 1 went, or the LG G Flex. Both started slow, both eventually had a good following though.

What carrier are you with. Dwitherell has the Tmobile edge

I can assure you guys that a very impressive group of former Note 3 devs have recently confirmed (this past week) that they plan to continue their work on the Edge, and most either already have or have ordered the device
As deez mentioned, @dwitherell, creator of Tweaked ROM is among them. That news alone was enough to confirm where I'll be headed upgrade-wise, as it has with a significant percent of (xda member) Note 3 users, who like me, are incredibly glad that they didn't jump the gun and upgrade to a regular 4!
I'm personally really glad that these guys have chosen the Edge as their next phone to tear apart, since it not only seems to really need it, but it seems to have far more potential than any other current device and I'm predicting that it will thoroughly kick ass once it's unlocked!
So hopefully that gives you something to look forward to; the Note Edge and subsequently the activity / development going on in its forum will soon be making a huge jump, as will the desirability of the device (at least among xda members)! I guess if I had already upgraded to the Edge, I'd just be trying to get a kick out of Samsung's implementation of a "killer feature", while waiting for the device to be thoroughly "fixed" in the somewhat near future. Looking forward to keeping an eye on the "dev migration" and picking up my own Edge soon! :good:
I know for a fact that a few of the great devs who shall remain anonymous are heading towards the Edge. As it's already been said, with the 4 being cheaper and the Edge not being available, they are working on Note 4 stuff right now. Which of course can be ported to the Edge. Keep the faith...

I look forward to seeing what developers can do with the Edge. I can't really think of too much that I would actually use since I never rommed my Note 3. I simply used root to get Nandroids and that was it.
The Edge panel has let me drop down from 4 home screens to now just using one. With the included recents panel, the app Screen Off and Lock, and MacroDroid running I don't use the buttons on my phone except to wake the screen.

I've been saying that over and over but people saying... "it's expensive" it's not. but it has been selling out on sprint
When the edge came out I had to travel 45 minutes from my house to get it. You can check the forum on xda on the 14th of november to see how frustrated some of us were with trying to order it or get it on the launch date. Add to that samsung is really doing a poor job, marketing wise, to establish the edge brand. They are killing it with the 4. Don't get me started on the price. Lastly, I really hate that samsung touted this as a "concept" phone, not the next evolution of the cell phone or something more permanent. The phone has been out for almost two months and there has been virtually no movement on apps that incorporate the panel nor has samsung added anything significant. That is an unnecessary self inflicted wound to tje brand. Conversely, I don't need to be baited in to like the phone. I a a true believer. This phone is awsome. If I could get a few more panels, like a better notification one for texts, calls and emails and a multi-window panel I would be on cloud 9.
Hopefully, all the post in here indicate that the developers are on their way. If they arrive that is fine if not I am cool either way. Just want sammy to do their part and not abandon this great device and get us some more functional panels in the meantime.

I agree, it's $5 than a 4 if you do TMO's Jump deal. Only thing I can see is the lack of availability, I couldn't find one till about a week after release and still had to drive 45 min... but they are becoming more popular and every person that has seen mine has claimed they were going out that weekend. Lean kernel, I really would like LK...
This phone should have the main GS6 feature along with:
a)waterproof with more robust design
b)removable battery
c) card slot
d) thicker (around 9mm) to accommodate 3000+ mAh battery
It would be an absolute killer phone which would make power users happy. Maybe not a huge market but almost certainly big enough to be profitable. At the same time there will be enough differentiation from the main model; those who want thin metal/glass design will pick the GS6, those who want features will pick the Active version.
My guess is Samsung will in fact do this in a few months. It's an obvious move.

This would be brilliant and at least show that Samsung hasn't lost all their senses.
Also I would love having the recent apps and back button physical again because the consecutive ones are too easy to press accidentally.
If I was Samsung, this is the last thing I would consider. Power users are niche market, maybe just 1-2% of the market.
So, I see no reason why Samsung will even consider this. At best they will make a water proof cover or a limited version which is water resistant. Nothing much more.

1. I currently use a Nexus. So, the expandable storage, removable battery, water proofing doesn't matter to me.
2. I never bought Samsung phone during initial launch, always wait for prices to stabilize.
Next time you assume something, just remind yourself not to do it.
I don't care whether Samsung releases it or not, because it doesn't matter to me. It makes no sense to release it from business perspective as niche market is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. If Apple can sell 75m without any such features, I am sure Samsung could also sell decent amount (not necessarily as much as Apple considering the brand pull of Apple).

Talking about assumptions....have you considered that Apple might sell even more if it had those features?
Also, your presumption that only "power-users" would buy those features is at best misguided. Most people who buy the so-called Active versions aren't power users, just...users who are into fitness, sports, the outdoors etc. Many in that group may not care about ALL the features but they care enough about some to seek out those models (or just buy regular flagships that have the least worst set of compromises e.g. Sony Xperias or the S5).
Samsung can and has outsold Apple. It isn't that difficult to do on a level playing field. Just ask Apple's lawyers why they keep launching stupid lawsuits when none of the technology these devices use originates with Apple.
Unfortunately, looking at the specs for the S4 Active & S5 Active reveals that they are prohibitively larger & heavier than the normal versions, at least for me. I don't use cases on my phones; I accept the risks in exchange for having lighter weight, easier handling, and quicker access to the internals. Looks like my hopes to get an up-to-date and seriously souped-up version of my aging S4 will not happen unless the Saygus V2 sees the light of day, or the G4/Z4 offers what I'm looking for. Any of those will probably be a step down in terms of screen quality to even the S4, but I'd rather sacrifice some screen performance for the important features I want.

You should read what others type - I said niche, not power-users. The question is about priority.
S5 had removable battery, SD card, water resistant and yet Apple might have sold more iPhones in single quarter what S5 sold in whole year. I say might beacuse Samsung doesn't reveal break-up of individual models. It's safe to assume S5 sold less than S4 and subsequently less than iPhone.
So you would have to think what is people giving priority to? SD card, water resistant is definitely a plus point, no consumer will say that he won't get a device if it's water resistant. But it looks like these parameters are not "must" for many consumers. People are still buying iPhone even when these options are missing. This tells us that even though these things are welcome, they are not mandatory for consumers to make a purchase decision.
As for sales, Samsung's S-series never outsold iPhone by itself. They are the highest among Android phones, but not as many as iPhones. Samsung outsold Apple many times in total smartphones (low/mid range combined), not as a individual model. They are trying to get back in the groove, and that's easily understandable after the S5 sales performance.

Your post implies that the fact that Samsung has sold more phones than Apple in some past quarters validates the features of its flagship device vs an iPhone, when you're not comparing the sales of one model vs another but rather 1,000 models vs one.
I'm a definite Samsung fan, but I know the reality of the market, and the iPhone has wayyyy more sales than the S series.
So you can't try to use sales as a validation of features on your side of the argument.

I've been holding out for the S6, assuming it would retain the features the S series had always had, because the S5 didn't represent enough of a step forward over the S4 to justify spending the money. In terms of screen, RAM, CPU, UFS, OIS, etc., the S6 is a much bigger jump over the S5 than the S5 over the S4. The only big improvement the S5 has over the S4 is water resistance, but this comes at a price of being larger & heavier than the S4 than it should be, considering it's only a 0.1" larger screen. However, if the G4, Z4, & Saygus V2 (which won't have WiFi calling, but might still be so good that I can suffer without it) don't pan out, I'd take the S5 over the S6, even at the same price. Now, if they do make an Active S6 with the extra hardware features, and it was comparable in size and weight to the S5, I'd pony up extra $ for the S6A without hesitation.
TMo is still charging $410 for the S4 & $530 for the S5, so it doesn't look like the S5 is going to be very cheap anytime soon. I am still too in need of TMo WiFi calling to use anything but a stock-based, custom TW ROM, but that's never actually been a problem for me - I've always preferred the TW ROMs to AOSP. Realistically, the S4 is still fast enough. Still yet to see if TMo offers WiFi calling on the S6, anyway.

I wasn't using sales to justify features of the flagship as you put it. Anyway.....is the Galaxy Note a flagship? What about the Galaxy Alpha?
I don't know the model-by-model breakdown of Samsung's sales and I suspect, neither do you. Nevertheless, popular consensus is that the combined sales of all iPhone models yearly may be higher than that for the Galaxy S series. It is speculation at best but....

Even if that 1-2% number is true that that would be 10-20 million potential customers given the vast size of the smartphone market. And they would be buying a premium phone with high margins. That is potentially worth billions of dollars of profit and it would be pretty foolish for Samsung to leave it on the table.
And it's not as if there would be a vast overhead involved. The could re-use the GS5 Active design with a few modifications. Marketing costs would be minimal since it would be targeted to power users who follow tech news closely. Overall I think it's a fairly easy business call.
Now this is something I can support and hope to see happening.
So, I totally got into it yesterday with T-Mobile and have decided to leave them. Their customer service has been so non-helpful over the past 8 weeks, it's ridiculous.
As a result, I'm going to jump from my S6 Edge to either a Note 5 64GB or an S6 Edge Plus 64GB tomorrow, get my Netflix code and then port my number out.
From there, I'm going to most likely sell the Note 5 or Edge Plus and get a One Plus Two now that I won't be able to jump anymore and the OPT is too good for the price (I have a friend pretty low on the invite list and they normally get invites after they purchase).
My question is, in about 3-4 weeks time, what phone would have a better resale value? I understand, too, that the Edge Plus 64GB will be about $100 more anyway, so I'm taking that into consideration.
I'm in the US, if that makes any difference.
Thanks for any input!
So you already have an invite for the one+ 2 or your going to just wait til you do that seems like it may take a while. If you sell either one on swappa you may get a good chunk of you money back especially I would think with the edge plus.

He's in the 200K range on the invite list, so I'm guessing he'll get his in about a week or two (hopefully) and then maybe get his extra invites within that week.
I love my S6 Edge, but after I "Jump", I think more people may want the Note 5? This is pure speculation on my part...
Put the One +2 next to your S6 Edge and you might cry. That's how much better the S6 Edge screen is compared to it.

Oh, there's no question that the screen is better on the Sammy. However, by me leaving T-Mobile and now having to buy the phone outright instead of the monthly plan, I could get 2 One Plus Two's in the 64GB for the price of one Edge 64GB.
I've owned every Galaxy S from the S3-S6 Edge and Note 3 - Note 5 (most likely today).
It'll be hard to part with Sammy, but T-Mobile has been so bad for me in terms of customer service, I just can't stay...
Note 5 will probably be better resale. As far as I know the s6 edge didn't do so hot because the curved edges. People were afraidoing of a drop being more like to cracked the screen. I'm sure the same thought will go into the edge +. I'd like to sell my edge because a good glass screen protector isn't available and isn't looking so hot for one to ever be.I'd like to go to a note 5.
Last I heard the S6 Edge outsold the regular S6 by alot. It's hard not to fall in love with those curved edges....
Take a look on EBay for the S6 Edge. Search by lowest price, and you will see nothing but S6's with cracked screens for the first several dozen. I would imagine that the S6 Edge+ will crack easier being a much larger-heavier phone.
I Truly Enjoy XDA-Developers. Com with this Fabulous HTC One M9
A thin TPU like Diztronic will prevent 95% of drop issues.
Just don't drop it over rocks.
And yes I don't care for T-Mobile either.
And remember any remaining balance on EIP becomes immediately due when the associated number is ported.
And don't expect to have that phone sim unlocked any time soon after doing that as well.
Dealing with TMO support is about as fun as taking a 400 foot walk down a 300 foot pier and french kissing a bull shark!
Edge+ does great in drop tests from what I have seen. It is not fragile, like you might think.
Fwiw, I have never seen a phone hold its value as well as the s6 edge has. Take a look at swappa, it is a 6 month old phone that is still hovering around $500+.
Let's face it, we all still like Samsung and have stuck by them through this turmoil by picking up the s7e ( very quality phone). If any of us previous owners have questions, concerns or news updates as to anything involving the N7-S7E switch over leave it here .

Since there's a huge influx of note 7 users, and T-mobile is doing damage control (even though it's not their fault), maybe it's time to revive the S7 (and S7 edge) bootloader unlock petitions. We may be able to get some traction, especially since it's been months since they said they were supposedly "working on it". Welcome Note 7 refugees!

I was thinking the same exact thing. It would of been nice to have the bootloader unlocked but i doubt they'll listen to us. We're a small group.

Let's face it, we all know us former note 7 owners will only be here until the S8 edge drops.
I want my secure folder back. My Knox is close but I liked that it ask for password before even letting you into secure folder while my knox you can see all apps in folder but cants access them
The On Screen Display is still not the same! It doesn't show all notification icons like the Note 7 did. This is what I miss most other than size and pen.
I miss the ability to jot a quick note when the screen is "off". Oh well.
I'm waiting for Note 8, not S8.
Back to the S7 Edge for now.

my sentiments exactly.
Just got the S7 Edge yesterday. This will take some getting use to. As some have stated the S7E is supposed to be snappier than the Note 7. I'm not seeing that at all. I realize I'll need to give the device a few days to settle.
I'll update this as I use the device more... I know it's minimal but this thing feels so tiny in my hands.
Id be happy if I could get the Note 7 S-Browser on the S7 Edge.. I always wanted a "open in background" option. Nice 2 month tease
I'm hoping that Samsung sticks with the Note series of phones. I didn't realize how much I used the S-pen at work.
I was really considering going back to Samsung from my iPhone 6S but this issue keeps popping up. I currently don't want to burn money for a Galaxy S8 so I have my eyes set on a Galaxy S7 Edge.
There was also an incident like this last year in our country, so I'm really having second thoughts getting the S7 Edge. What do you guys think? Should I sell my iPhone and take my chances?

I have 2 GS7 edge in my family and 6 of my friends are also using it no issues at all... Why in Philippines? Why not US, UK or Japan? Most likely sub par charger or or unstable electric supply will be the cause.. as GS7 edge shuts down if it gets too hot..

Cars breakdown, planes crash, PCs get fried, phones catch fire, doesn't mean there's a fault with that model
If you see a car on the side of the motorway with flashing hazard lights do you suddenly make a thread on a car forum saying all of those cars are faulty?
If a person falls over in the street do you make a thread saying all humans are faulty?
If the S7/Edge had battery/fire problems, they would have been recalled like the Note 7, think before making dumb threads

See my point?
Coming from that country, these cases are isolated cases. I can see that you're scared that it might end up like the "Note 7 Incident" but even Iphones catch fire, pretty much any electronic powered by a lithium-ion battery is susceptible to fire. Officially, the S7 Edge is a great phone and its not going to end up like it's older brother (Note 7) anytime soon.
Good day
Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll take my chances on this great phone. It's probably an isolated case. I don't want to get the S8 anyway because it's too damn expensive.
