A letter from LG Development on G4 Bootloader - G4 General

Well it sounded nice in theory anyway, oh well.

Wow. Are you using a task killer?
Anyway, no surprise here.

I lold

Why is that funny? I started using it back when the HTC Hero launched and since then all my phones install my GAPPS apps when I login to my new device for the first time.
Again I ask though, what is the problem with using a Task Killer and what is the relevance of that with what this topic is covering?

Task killers just keep causing your tasks to relaucnh eating up cpu

I accidentally touched the thanks button and you got a free thanks.
Anyway, everyone that follows android has known for years that task killers are a no-no. They actually cause more harm than good.

Ahh, I see. I've not really been around the android scene in quite a while so I was not aware of this, so thanks for the heads up.

What for do you need to use lg bootloader unlock tool anyways. Those ****ers screw your waranty and never let you lock it back. I wouldn't use that even if it became available.

Getting back on topic...
Nice to know they're only going to let some bootloaders get unlocked. I just asked them about the status of H811.

Root is always good at least imho. BTW: you can change DPI without root:

It works

I know, I have (since posting this) look further into the Task Killer issue and discovered the issues (and removed said Task Killer from my G4).
As far as why root....Umm, why not root? The whole point of these phones is so we can basically have a mini computer in our pockets that does EXACTLY what we want and when we want....By rooting you get SO many more options and features to help achieve exactly this goal.
blackknightavalon - I wish you all the best with your talking with LG. Hopefully you get better information on your H811 than I did with my US991.

is the US991 and the LS991 the same?

Also same reply for me. WTF LG? What do u mean by previous devices? What is the speciality of those EU H815 models??? Damn....

They've been posting nearly the same identical thing in their forums in response to unlock request for other devices. It's a copy paste response it would seem. My guess is that we will only see the unlocked bootloader by LG on devices that have no carrier and are worldwide devices.

Seems so. I don't have the money for a open market G4 and my carrier gave me the G4 for free since I never wanted a new phone when it was time to renew my data plans and I'm a customer for 10 years now.
After a short test I decided to tell my friends to get a G4 too since we thought the BL will be unlocked and we grabed a good deal with my carrier to get 40 G4s for a very low price for development purpose. Well, now we have 40 locked down smartphones, I hope at least root will be available soon.

Do you Think HTC will place the same Hardware root block on the DHD as they did on G2

Well, according to these very forums, the US T-mobile G2 has a hardware root block - a chip which flashes the phone back to the original ROM every time it detects a custom one
Do you think HTC will place this same hardware root block on the UK Desire Z and more importantly, our precious Desire HD? Personally, I'd like to believe that HTC did this under pressure from T-Mobile US, but I don't know...
Yes the desire HD will have the same protection as the G2. athough that sounds bad its not as bad as you would think.
1) there will be loads of devs working on the same problem (G2, DesireZ, DesireHD) so the quicker the full root will come
2) we can still "temporeraly" write to system unlike the Evo/Desire/ect. before root
Presumeing that the DesireHD is also vunrable to the rageagainstthecage exploit like the G2. Im pritty shure that it will be as G2 is and the ROM will be built at a similer time if :-D

The G2 is running Vanilla 2.2 though, so it may be somewhat different... Lets hope the Desire HD can be rooted ASAP, Im sure Paul OB has a few tricks up his sleeve He has an answer for everything you know))
JD
yeah i just read about this on Engadget. This could potentially be a major problem for us future DHD owners.
Nobody has confirmed yet that there is some sort of hardware block. To me it sounds more like a kernel customization. Anyways, give the G2 hackers a couple of days to figure it out. I wouldn't be surprised if non-US phones (where there is actually competition) will not see this crap.
Thanks for your opinions guys! I guess the key is patience, it seems successful steps have already been taking in unlocking the device. With the combined effort of all of the HTC droid hackers, it shouldn't take very long at all
If they cant disable it, maybe they can make the phone reinstall a rooted version of the stock.. They have temporary root now, hopefully they manage to locate the hidden nand.. If they managed to get write permission to the part where the stock image/rom is, hopefully they will manage to make it restore a rooted version of it. If they manage to disable it, it would be easier for us to flash using rom manager etc but if they cant, we will just have to perhaps rely on restoring method. Its like a nandroid restore mechanism.
Just wishful thinking here, i do not know what they are doing now but hopefully it will work either hard or easy. Things go hard at first and hopefully will be more fluid as time pass by. Pray.. pray.. pray.. Go modders/devs!
I can tell you all now HTC will have HW R/W protection on there probably controled by the bootloader. They did it on the Desire/Wildfire/Evo they are not going to take a step back with this phone. 99% of the stuff ppl here about the G2 protection is wrong. i.e its not a rootkit :-s what happens.
Bootloader sets eMMC to R/O --> boots os --> any changes get bufferd --> on reboot bootloader restores removing changes
Thats what happens no one realy knows how the restores happen yet.
Root will come probably for all 3 devices at once.

Personally, I can live without custom ROM, though I would prefer to have it. I currently own a Hero with MCR5, and love it.
But what is REALLY important is root access to access Market and download the many programs I have already purchased.
Here in Denmark, we only have the locked "free apps only" market. I need my CoPilot and much other stuff!
If I have root, and can run my "root required" apps, then I am happy.

Still, not all countries are on that list (like mine for example).
So having access to paid apps is still a pretty good reason to have root.
So, i need a help from you guys with this. I never had Android and have one question.
Ok, i understood that if i want coocked ROM i need to root it, BUT if I want instal crack games and programs and all availible apps from the net, do I still need this root?
Without root i can instal only free games and buy the one with price and thats all??

Can somebody explain.. Is this feature "HW root block" will be affect every DHD or only SIM-locked (operator's) phones?
I'm using Galaxy S and it is not difficult to guess that I have pre-ordered DHD on Clove. My Galaxy's using experience tell me to be bad without having root access. So I have been a bit confused when saw this topic.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The DHD will have the same R/W (root) protection in place as the G2 (vision). I know this as its based on the same chipset and will contain the same eMMC.
HTC always do this on every "generation" of phone i.e desire/evo/ect. Generation had the same NAND lockout as eachother.
So every single shipping DHD will have the G2 style protection
Can a mod pls close this topic its pointless and missleading

How so? I'm asking a valid question, T-Mobile US may have pushed HTC into doing this, just like they did to remove Wifi tethering to the G2's supposedly 'Vanilla' version of Android... Do you work for HTC? All we can do is predict trends, nobody knows for sure if the DHD will share the US G2's exact chipset.

When will we have root for Verizon LG G2?

I know its not out yet but most phones are getting rooted before released. On top of that, the korean version is already rooted.
So thats why I ask when you guys think we will have root? Is the verizon version that different from the Korean version (Lock bootloader)?
Just wanted an idea before i pick the phone up next week.

As of right now, LG has no drivers that support the vzw LG G2 as far as anyone on this forum has found. If we had proper drivers we may be able to root right now using the same method the ATT variant used.

Coming from a GNex, this device is nothing but improvement other than not having an unlocked bootloader and root. If at the minimum they(developers) can not get the Verizon version rooted during my 14 day return period, this device will be going back. Too much BS loaded on this thing, but I do want to love it. Is there a bounty yet for root and unlock??

I also came from a GNex, so same here. Love the new G2 phone, but I am not sure why Verizon always seems to go through the added effort of obfuscating root for power users.
Root is the absolute bare minimum for me. For now, I am in a two week holding pattern... I can't get too attached to the device because if there's no root, the phone is worthless.

Exactly!! Root is bare minimum, unlock will be better.....:good:
Nothing is going to happen on the vzw g2 until usb debugging works properly. As far as it looks right now there is nobody on a vzw g2 that has it actually working. It's able to be checked, but when you plug it in there is no notification in the notification bar that says it's working....and not a single person has been able to get the phone detected by adb.

I'm in the same boat. on a GNex for 2 years and this is the first device that's coaxed me to switch. If we don't have (at least) root by 2 weeks it's going back and I'm back to the drawing board. I'm okay with waiting on the bootloader but that could also be a risk given the current status for other devices still not being unlocked.
Part of the reason I've stuck with the GNex so long is the custom ROM scene - and specifically Paranoid Android which is fantastic on that device. G2 has me happy so far but getting rid of the VZW turn on/off sounds and animations is the first thing that has to go.

We are truly in the same boat like you said. The rom scene is what kept the GNex shortcomings(battery life/radios) in check. You are right about the current rate at which bootloaders are being unlocked. Nexus devices may be the only way to go. Does anyone know LG's history for having devices unlockable( bootloader), dev support, and receiving android updates? My relationship with this phone so far is like that hot girl at the bar who's got it all, but something just doesn't seem right.....

The thing that doesn't seem right is that it's on Verizon (read: mental issues). I really want to nab this thing, but with the way the GS4 was handled, along with the HTC One, I don't know if I can bring myself to do it.

I just got my g4 in the mail and I'm loving it. First phone I ordered brand new so it's my first time seeing an empty forum. No root, no twrp, no xposed. Nothing!
Do you guys have non-root alternatives to our favorite root apps and mods?

yea, it's been weird for me too. I've had HTC flagships the last 5-6 years. Always got it and already had unlock, root, recovery and some ROMs. This is a whole new feeling for me. We have root for the 815, which I have. So I'll grab that tonight.
LOVING the device too - exceeds my expectations for sure. Gorgeous display, fast, loud speaker, no complaints at all. But yea, missing the activity in the forum to go along with it!
TWRP is available now!

We're all going to be learning lessons in patience then hahaha. The 815 is getting the response I could only dream of the 811 having.
But the whole reason I started the thread was to ask if there are non-root variations of the root apps we love so much. Like removing bloatware, changing the dpi, all the stuff like that. unachievable without root?

You can change your dpi without root using adb. I already had adb set up, so I just used the commands from here: http://android.wonderhowto.com/how-...creen-resolution-without-root-access-0160439/
Mine is at 560 right now. Stock dpi is 640.

Tell me about it. You'd think LG would be more welcoming to developers, seeing as they were late to the game and knowing their main competition already has root for their devices. The more and more I use my G4, the more half-baked the phone seems.

Looks like you may be charging that thing for a while, then. Seems that even the T-Mobile version is subject to the plague that is the locked bootloader for right now. Hopefully someone can figure something out or Samsung releases something along the lines of HTC's bootloader unlock for us. For once, the Snapdragon appears to be more crippled than the Exynos.
Yeah. I wouldn't count on anything any time soon. Not days, not weeks....
If you want a root able device. I would suggest taking the phone back.
Ummmmm, do you guys know what's going on with root on the US versions?

What are you talking about? T-Mobile has an unlocked boot loader. It's been confirmed dozens of times. Where are you getting your information from?

Ummmmm, no.
Galaxy S7 Bootloader Lock Explained: You Might Not Get AOSP After All | XDA Developers
ROOT DISCUSSION - R.I.P. Sticky Root Guide - SM-G935T -> STATUS -> LOCKED BOOTLOADER
Unless John Legere at TMO can sway the powers-that-be at Samsung to unlock the bootloader for the G930T/G935T (and supposedly he's trying), nobody will be rooting any time soon.

You must not get on here much. This is the biggest story lately and the reason why everyone is mad/frantic.
TMOBILE locked the bootloader John is playing us after 14 days when return period is up he will tell you guys Samsung said no its has nothing to do with Samsung it's the u.s carriers with the new leasing programs, warranty exchanges, and unauthorized tethering...They are losing money from phones which have been rooted

I understand everyone being upset about the latest development but some need to calm down a bit. Not saying it's anyone in this thread though some comments are a bit over the top. Maybe some people are new around here or others have the memory of a goldfish but this isn't' the first time this has happened to a device. There are a multitude of ways around this. Motorola who is known for locking bootloaders with almost a hatred for consumers, was defeated with the combined effort of many people on XDA. They managed to find the key to unlock the bootloader and it was smooth sailing from there.
Will we obtain the key? Quite possibly. we'll either do it the hard way and get lucky running a program on multiple computers and phones to decrypt it. The other option is that it'll be leaked by an internal source (probably the most likely). Samsung might even give us a dev program to unlock it similar to HTC. The fact is Samsung doesn't want a large customer base to be this unhappy. We are the most influential consumer base as well. Think of all the changes and additions to Android over the past few years. Changes that started here first and were adopted by manufacturers. They use us and in a way, need us to show them what people want. Let's not forget that XDA is the most influential Android site on the net. If Samsung gets snuffed here badly it'll spread very quickly.
TL;DR It'll happen one way or another guys. Chill out. May not be in the time frame we're use to these days (remember waiting weeks to months for root back in the day?) but it will happen. focus on pressuring those who can exact change into doing so. For the ones capable of it you should focus on ways around this.
I for one am not worried. I had a Motorola Defy that had a locked bootloader. By the time I had bought the phone though it had been out for a few months and people had found a way to put custom roms on it so I was happy.
At least I know I'll be able to keep my Samsung pay around for a bit ?

How does Samsung pay or Google wallet work? How would I know which retailer supports it?

I hate these questions. They make me feel more doubtful, lol. Heck, if we knew that everybody would be buying one and waiting in anticipation.

The million dollar question. I hope it happens but this is the first phone stock I've had that doesn't annoy me. I actually barely notice at all but I love to flash so maybe one day
My phone runs great no issues so it's not a big thing to have it rooted in that aspect, however. I like to keep NANDROID backups in case something happens, and the ability to backup applications the way I want is very important to me. Just using apps to backup everything is one thing, but if something occurs on a system level, you are generally screwed unless you have ROOT to be able to tinker and fix it yourself. I was able to fix countless phones on my own when the stores would want to wipe to factory reset or give me a refurbished. Screw that mess, give me freedom. Besides, it's illegal for them to deny you insurance claims based on ROOT. They legally have to prove that you damaged the phone by modifying the software. Battled and won twice after threats of a lawsuit. I have that part of the consumer rights saved in multiple places, just need to remember where so I can post it.
It all depends on whether or not the bootloader is locked, dm-verity, restrictions, etc. I hope it's not something like the Galaxy S7 with its Qualcomm Secure Boot.
The bootloader isn't even accessible from any user accessable means from what I've encountered, I can't seem to get in, I have "Enable OEM unlock" in settings, but it just seems that fastboot has been entirely stripped from this device... Very weird.

I'm guessing no one is even working on root or bootloader unlock. Seriously, disappointing. I just want bloat gone.

Why dont you look for a bootloader exploit or donate your phone to someone who can do it?

Because I like to go outside every now and then and I need a working phone. Don't care to go back to old Nexus.

You can still anti bloat through android.. by disabling apps manually. But yeah I feel your pain.. I hate ads, I miss Xposed, I miss TWRP.. My note 5 i still keep around for that reason...
Truth is the LG G6 is a spectacular phone.. But the rooting community is getting smaller and smaller as android allows you to be more customizable and the average device life for people has gone from 2-3 years.. to every year now with leases and trade ins at carriers, and flagship phones coming out every 8-14 months.
WIth the G4 randomly dying, and the G5 having battery issues.. It took LG a while to get it right, and I love this phone more than the s8 and s8+ but LG jumped on the "apple/samsung" bandwagon by locking bootloaders... There are alot more people with Samsungs than LGs right now.. The reason behind all the companies going this route is because of Android Pay and proprietary security by phone manufacturers to push more sales through corporate and enterprise security..
At least LG is over time unlocking some variants ( albeit international) of the G6 its hopeful...
We used to have this luxury with HTC but they are still trying to stay afloat.
Those are just my observations... from working for an indirect dealer and rooting tons of phones for 9+ Years.
We just have to pray for an exploit- somewhere.. someone out there has turned it into an obsession... Lets just hope they emerge ....

Ditto on all that. For ads, I've used the all in one opt out which has eliminated lots of ads. Bloat is irritating, having to reset Google Voice after every update. Xposed was awesome. And I want all the Sprint badging and boot animation gone. Even temp root would make me happy.
Just everybody remember. Do not update. Usually root is achieved on lowest firmwares only in the last few history of lg series
Someone just messaged me this: Maybe some jtag process could work, or test point at qcom mode, dumping boot.img and rooting with magisk
