I went to sleep last night awaiting my first day at sixth form. My G1 was going to be there for internet browsing whilst looking for information (school intranet is very unreliable) but I woke up with a slightly different issue. An ! mark. Turns out somebody had hacked my google account overnight and changed my password. i can now no longer access any google features, including any synced things on the phone, all because of some pesky hacker (of course not aimed at the wonderful 'hackers' on here such as drizzy, twisted, cyanogen, jac etc).
However, I only have one email address so I did not provide an alternate, and to reset my password requires me to know the date i started using my account, which I haven't got a clue. Does anybody know what I can do in this position? Thanks a lot

You can wipe your phone and create a new account. Then in the mean time just email google and see what they can do for you.
yep, thats an option. however I have purchased numerous apps (copilot being the most expensive) that are linked to the account and that I will lose.
Also, I emailed them and they said I didn't provide enough information on my account to get it back. How the hell am I supposed to know the dates I started using 1. the account 2. youtube 3. Google calendar?

I'm wondering if you are interacting with a real Google password recovery page. From my account page the only password recovery options are:
- Secondary email (optional)
- SMS (optional)
- Security question
At no point does it ever indicate it would recover my password using something as arcane as the date I first started using Google services. By the way, I highly recommend the "Write my own question" option for the security question. Choose a question that describes a very particular characteristic of one of your heirloom or keepsake possessions.

Any reason why you couldn't recover using the regular account recovery screen? It should use your security question.
I'm not sure why you're angry at Google, when your own computing practices are what probably caused your account to be exploited (probably weak password or trojan installed a keylogger)? Regardless, Google is just practicing normal due diligence for account recovery. Account recovery has to use information that only you know (and which you possibly might not even know yourself).
If you're concerned about your eBay sales, go into your eBay preferences and change your registered email.

That does sound like a pretty secure setup.
Well I guess the best you can do is just try filling out that password recovery form. It doesn't appear that dates for the times you first started using specific Google services is necessary. Worst case scenario you could just guess. Since you already don't have any access now, I reckon you have nothing to lose. Good luck!

i am so chocked that nobody is complaining about Exchange security not working with GRI40 either. the only ROM working fine are HTC Sense rom...
i know it is not important for most of you but i am stucked with a phone that cannot connect to my Exchange system...but i want vanilla ROM working...

I have used my phone with two different "enterprise" companies and have not had an issue.
No issues here either. Using a major law firms exchange.
Liking the update to include signatures on replies now. That's the way it should be.
Exchange Sync Issues

2.3.3. on my stock N1 has suffered the following problems:
1. Would not connect to Exchange server after I updated to 2.3.3
2. So I cleared data in "email" app, forced close, and tried to reinstall from
Home>Menu>Accounts. Also rebooted.
3. When trying to install from Home>Menu>Accounts I found NO PROVISION FOR MANUAL SETUP, i.e., manually entering domain name and exchange server ID; you can only enter your email address and password. The Gingerbread Manual mentions there is provision for manual setup in case of problems, but they don't tell you that you have to. . .
4. Set up from eMail App in the App drawer. When I set up that way there is a button for Manual Install.
5. Without Manual Install it is probable that your phone is assuming a domain name or ID that is wrong, and it will never connect.
6. After the successful re-install and use for about a day, 2.3.3. wiped out my server connection again arbitrarily (I never turn the phone off/on, etc.; it just did it) and I had to set up again.
This is definitely a BUG in 2.3.3--very definitely the inability to manually set up from any screen on which you can set up an account.
Same problem here, although it looks that Exchange is setup correctly -following instructions of ecdy, there is NO data synchronization at all with my exchange account! As under Froyo there were no problems at all, this MUST be a Gingerbread bug. Anybody any solution, workaround, please?

I do believe there is an issue with not having the manual setup option. I read somewhere on here that someone got the manual option after the automatic setup failed 10 times. A bug yes, but once account is set up, everything works as it should.

No, pity, NOTHING works as it should - read my post above, please. Since Gingerbread (N1, stock, unrooted, 2.3.3. OTA) exchange sync lost, although it LOOKS set up correctly (accepts all, password, username) does NOT sync mail, calendar!

I did a manual upgrade to GB (clean upgrade). Maybe the OTA has broken something.
Exchange Sync problems
As far as other email accounts are concerned: GMail worked fine; Yahoo! Mail, which was originally set up in the OS's "Accounts" mode, didn't work. Downloading the Yahoo! Mail App fixed that.
Maybe there's a Hotmail app too.
It sounds like bmszabo isn't getting refreshed (synced); check all accounts settings that adjust sync frequency and do a "sync now" to see if it works.
Before I erased all the data in my Exchange a/c on the phone I would get a screen with all my emails and contacts up to the point where I had installed 2.3.3, but nothing thereafter. The phone will store old data but if it can't connect to the server it won't add anything new. Why does bmszabo say "it LOOKS set up correctly (accepts all, password, username)"? It will remember the correct pwd and username as you put them in, along with an incorrect domain name and server, and never be able to connect.

Sorry, trying to explain things happened since GB OTA upgrade: after setting up exchange account, Exchange sync setup looks allrite, after asking about administrator priorities (and accepting them) sync sign turns green, looks like account setup correct, shows empty mailbox, but it DOES NOT sync with my mail, neither with calendar; as a matter of fact, my exchange calendar does not even show up on the list of calendars in Agenda...
O yes, forgotten: manual sync, although green wheel spins shortly, does not change a thing, neither..
Another similar issue with Exchange not syncing came up with CM 6.1.1. The fix was to reinstall the Email.apk.

Firstly, you enter email and password. If you want to include domain name - you write your email like this: domain\[email protected]
After you enter it, whether it fails or succeeds - it presents you with manual setup screen.

5 % pf the companies uses Exchange security? you must be kidding right? what my company is asking for in term of security is just basic. So i cannot believe that sorry.
This is really basic functionalities for security. It works on iphone, on Sense, on Symbian, but not on Android. So i am not getting it. If it works everywhere else than Android, it means that definitively more than 5 % of companies are requiring these basic security features.
My 2 cents of course and nothing personal!

What I am saying is that there are plenty of people who are able to connect to their Exchange servers just fine which do HAVE exchange security enabled. Maybe your company has additional security restrictions enabled. If so, then your company will fall in the 5% subset.

I am using cyanogenmod 7 RC1 (gingerbread) and have tried multiple roms including googles vanilla and NONE of them have supported my company's exchange setup. This was supposed to be fixed in froyo and for people using sense it is fixed.
Basically when i manually setup activesync it says the phone doesn't support the security features.
Who cares if my company uses extra security or not. It works on HTC and iphone/ipad.
Google is basically doing half assed exchange support and I will keep telling people they will probably need to shell out for touchdown if they move to android until they fix it.
Google needs to support ALL ACTIVESYNC SECURITY settings, anything less isn't good enough.
I think You are right; Exchange sync (cal, mail) worked PERFECT with Froyo, and with Gingerbread it is completely lost.. I don't think any firm can do this to customers using their OS, and I do hope somebody gots a solution soon (or: Google fixes the issue?).
In the meanwhile: as I cannot use my company mail/ calendar: I wish I stayed with Froyo!!

WARNING: This is an extremely crude hack and I do not really know what it does. It could very well destroy your Exchange folders or worse. Please make backups and do not use this hack with any important email accounts, Exchange or otherwise!

Tl;dr summary: I removed EASSyncService.smali from the stock Samsung Email.apk and replaced it with the EASSyncService.smali from jakubklos' AOSP email wakelock fix. I did not edit the smali code or have access to Samsung sources, so this is a very crude hack and there are some bugs. I'm hoping people can expand on this work and come up with a better solution. All credits to jakubklos for the fix; any bugs are the result of this hack and not jakubklos' work.

In this thread, jakubklos identified and fixed a battery drain bug in the AOSP Email app. This bug causes the Email app to not release a partial wakelock in some cases when syncing with a Microsoft Exchange account. The result is a battery drain until you restart the phone or regain the connection. See the linked thread for more details.
The bug fix is just a very simple change to EASSyncService.java, but it required editing the source code and recompiling the Email app. This change has already been merged into CyanogenMod and Google should be putting it in future versions of Android.
The Galaxy S II comes with a different version of Email.apk. It is similar to AOSP, but generally the Samsung Email.apk is a "better" version of the AOSP Email.apk. The Samsung Email.apk has some extra features like peak/off-peak sync scheduling, and an option to force emails to display in white text with black backgrounds (my favorite feature -- easier on my eyes and saves some power on the AMOLED screen).
Although the source code for the AOSP Email.apk is available, the code for Samsung's Email.apk is not. (At least as far as I know; please let me know if I am wrong.) So we can't directly use jakubklos' method of editing the source and recompiling the app.
However when I opened up Samsung's Email.apk, I noticed it had basically the same .smali files as the AOSP Email.apk. Yes, there are differences, but I figured that the EASSyncService.smali in the Samsung app probably does basically the same thing as EASSyncService.smali in the AOSP app. Understanding and editing smali is way beyond my abilities. So my hack was simply to replace the EASSyncService.smali from the stock Email.apk with the EASSyncService.smali from the fixed AOSP Email.apk.
Result: It's not a perfect fit. I get occasional force closes and other random errors. But for the most part, it seems to work, and my Email wakelocks are lower. Note that this bug affects me a *lot* because my Exchange server at work is really ghetto and constantly unreachable. If you have an Exchange server running at real corporate standards without much downtime, then this bug probably does not affect you and you will not notice any improvements.
Despite the occasional crashes, this is "good enough" that I am using it for my daily use. I am sharing the app below so others can test it out. But be warned, this is for experimenting only. I really have no idea what EASSyncService does and what the differences are between the Samsung EASSyncService and the AOSP EASSyncService, so I cannot guarantee that it will not trash your Exchange folders or worse. Do not use this with any email accounts that are of any value whatsoever!
Eventually I hope somebody can come up with a better solution, either by editing the .smali code, or getting Samsung sources and recompiling the app, or something else.

- Backup your stock Email.apk.
- Delete your email accounts and clear all email data.
- Uninstall your stock Email.apk.
- Download the "Email.apk" attached below. Copy to your /system/app folder.
- Reboot your phone.
Bump!! I hope some Samsung Devs are reading xda frequently. They need to work hard on the software side. HTC is better in that area. But Samsung hardware is so good. I hope they catch up soon, otherwise I will jump ship for my next purchase. It's just not acceptable to have bugs in the most important feature of smartphone like exchange email, calendar, etcs....

To the OP, how is this mod working out for you? Have you used BetterBatteryStats to see if the wakelocks have gone?
I'm really suffering from this issue, the phone is kept awake more than 50% of the time even though the screen on time is minimal.. only have one exchange email on push, and issue definitely goes away when push is disabled
It works the same as jakubklos' AOSP email wakelock fix. In my case, it means that the wakelocks are somewhat lower, but I still get a lot of email wakelocks.
Remember that the jakubklos' wakelock fix only applies in certain situations, namely where the connection is interrupted while syncing. If you have wakelocks for other reasons, then it will not do anything for those.
Battery life on Exchange push is affected by a number of factors. From what I understand, Exchange push is actually more like a slow pull. The phone initiates a request to the Exchange server and waits for a response. The Exchange server will delay responding until there is a new mail or until the connection times out. The phone is supposed to sleep while its waiting for the server to respond, but it wakes up again when it needs to send another request to the Exchange server. (This is different from Blackberry's service which is a "real" push because it's tied to the phone carrier.)
So if you get lots of mail, or if the Exchange server timeouts too quickly, the phone will have to constantly wake up and reinitiate the connection. Sometimes when the connection is poor or the phone can't reach the server, I think the client goes crazy and just constantly sends out sync requests. But I don't have a log or anything to try to track down the problem.

I can't remember exactly what I did that triggered the crashes. I think I was trying to rearrange some mail in Exchange folders or something like that. Another crash occurred when I was using the Email app to do something with my Gmail account.
Now I use the Email app only to send and receive email. Haven't had any crashes since then, and it seems to be okay for my daily use. But again I have no idea what the differences are between the Samsung and Android files so it's definitely "use at your own risk."

No. But if you wanted that "feature," you could just substitute the same smali file in the version that doesn't have the administrator checks. I think the only difference is a line in an xml file.
Guys can you post up wakelocks please of a normal days usage with stock email client on exchange I want to see how badly it affects wakelocks. I've tried to add the code inbetween roken pipe and before ping times but not sure if it actually works or not. My BBS shows 12mins for email app today between 8am to 6pm.
Not sure if that's bad or not as I've not tested those times on stock email app.
Just upgraded my device to OTA 4.4 and Exchange services crashed every time I opened Email (I kept getting a message "Unfortunately Exchange Services stopped" repeatedly).
After deleting both the email account and the user certificate (we use certificate-based email authentication), I am unable to re-add the Exchange account back (after defining all credentials and parameters, I get a popup that says "Couldn't finish. Can't connect to server."). Additionally, I see a white triangle with an exclamation point inside in the notification bar. When I pull the bar down, the exclamation bar has a caption of "Network may be monitored by an unknown third party". When I click on that caption, I get a new pop-up saying "Network monitoring. A third party is capable of monitoring your network activity, including emails, apps and secure web sites. A trusted credential installed on your device is making this possible". There is a button underneath called "Check trusted credentials" and clicking on that takes me to a "user" portion of the trusted credentials store, where I see my corporate CA certificates.
In general, the issue of certificates issued by a non-public CA generating a "Network may be monitored" message has already been documented in several forums and there is an issue #62076 created for it. However, I suspect that "security features" introduced in KitKat are somehow preventing my device from using my certificate for email authentication (because device does not trust it). I knew I could count on Google to break the most used feature of my phone (email) and thus render it useless. Another win for the history books.

I already tried that twice. No joy.
The most annoying part is that I also have a Nexus 10 tablet and it had ZERO problems after upgrading to KitKat (aside from the annoying "your network is being monitored" notification). This means Motorola yet again mucked with the stock Android install and broke it.
Any other ideas? I'd hate to go through a pain of reverting back to 4.3.
It'll work if you keep deleting, rebooting, then reinstalling the apk for email. At least it did for me. My company issues these certs, and I got it to work eventually.

Looks like quite a lot of people are affected by this. I cant believe how sloppy Google's QA is if something as major as this was pushed out of the door.
Now I need to wait for Motorola to incorporate this fix into their build of Android, then for Verizon to "test" it and roll it out via another OTA update. In the mean time, my Moto X is as good as a brick because I cant get my corporate email/contacts/calendar on it.

Can you clarify 'work' - I assume this means it is sync'ing - do you still have the security warning about the certificate, or did this get cleared in your reboot/re-install cycles ?

Just wanted to update everyone - Google has stated that the issue is fixed "in a future release". One "minor" problem - there is zero information as to which release, as well as when it is going to be rolled out.
So....as of now thousands of people using private certs on Kitkat devices are still screwed and this number is growing by the day. If the issue is resolved and Google has a rollout plan for the fix, what use is there for further bug reports or reporting? It just becomes noise in their bug tracking system. Is there a purpose for yet more people to say, "hey, yeah, I have this issue too"?
Strange, I have Exchange email set up on my Moto X 4.4 and synching without issues.
After the pop-up, I accepted or ok'd. We're running a 2010 Exchange Server.

Under Exchange settings, Port is 443, Security type is SSL/TLS, client certificate is None.
Strange, I thought it pushed a CA though when I completed the set up.

That's the point. This issue only affects users that are using certificates issued by private CAs for ActiveSync authentication. If you are not using certificates, you would not be affected.

Not necessarily true. I use exchange email for work and although I can set up my account I cannot receive emails. I can send sometimes. But never receive.

What you are experiencing is a separate issue, so please open a separate thread for it.
The issue being discussed here is a situation where an attempt to use private certificates for authentication while adding an Exchange Activesync account to a device running 4.4 results in a bogus "Couldn't finish. Can't connect to server." error message (while the device does not even attempt to go out and establish a connection).

There are several reasons the thread should have remained open:
1. While Google is taking their sweet time to roll out a fix, someone may find a workaround for the issue. A workaround is certainly better than a phone with no email/contains/calendar (and no, nobody wants to pay for and use those crappy 3rd party email clients).
2. Having 10,000+ people star a thread gives a great indication of how widespread the issue is, hopefully giving Google developers a hint that it needs to be prioritized and rolled out ASAP (as opposed to incorporating it into the next general patch release).
3. Since most handset vendors customize their Android build, the issue may not exist on every handset made by every manufacturer. Someone may report that a particular device is not suffering from this issue, thus making it safe to buy.
4. If and when the fixed version of Android is finally rolled out and the "fix" does not work, users have no way to report it, other than opening a brand new thread and wasting more resources.
If anyone is interested, the Exchange service on the G4 (at least the T-Mobile version) can be disabled via the apps menu and Google Exchange services can be installed.
This will allow you to use the GMail app with Exchange enabled hosts, like Hotmail/Outlook.com and retain push mail, contact and calendar sync.
Recommended steps:
If you have any accounts using email and exchange, remove them first.
Open Settings/General/Apps/All
Tap on Exchange (The LG one with the blue icon)
Force stop
Disable the Exchange Service
(Restarting your phone is recommended at this point)
Install Google Exchange Services
(Restarting your phone is recommended at this point as well)
Open GMail and you will have Exchange as an option when you add an account.

edit: oops that didn't work for me it gets stuck constantly sync'ing and has some exchange service crashes hmm...
Works fine here so far. I just wish you could disable the remote administration requiring your device to use a PIN. I'd love to use Smart Lock.

It's important that you remove any old exchange accounts in email first, then force close the LG exchange service and disable it. If you don't disable it, then GMail will get stuck syncing.

I haven't tried it again yet my life is crazy with a 3 yr old and twins I've been using stock g4 email app. I'll try it this week and report back thanks. Tmo version

Just waiting on root so I can keep my damn unlock screen without having to put in an 8 character password with numbers and special characters every time I want to unlock my phone.
I might just bite the bullet and buy touchdown for $20 because I heard it doesn't need to apply the permissions to your whole phone but just the app.

This. I have used Smart Lock on my N5 with no problems even though we are required to have a PIN. Fired up the G4 and immediately noticed once I setup email Smart Lock was grey and can't be used. I thought that by switching to Gmail for my Exchange email I could get around that only to find Gmail doesn't have Exchange support on this phone (until I found this thread).
Has anyone that has followed the instructions at the top been able to get Smart Lock working when Gmail is used for Exchange email? Or does Touchdown get around this?
I am going to test this out tonight - can't goof around too much while on the job!!

Outlook bypasses the security requirement, but it appears to only sync email, not calendars or contacts. You get prompted that Exchange wants you to accept these changes, but you have an option to deny them.

I'll have to look at that new outlook app closer then. It prompted me for the security permissions to wipe phone, pin, and all that crap so I exited out.
Touchdown is supposed to be all one contained environment so I don't think it syncs with the default apps. I could be wrong as I have never tried it since I always got a PIN bypasser working on my old phones. It is free for a month so try it out! I don't care about contacts and it would be nice to have calendar but I'm not heartbroken over it. What I would like to know is if you still get a notification of new mail. I would assume so but aren't allowed to preview it which is fine but I at least need to know I have mail.

Yeah that request seems to be standard whenever you setup Outlook, regardless of app. It was when it came to the lock screen settings, it allowed me to dismiss it.
I just tried the Outlook app and it required far less permissions then adding an exchange email through the android/lg settings. The regular settings wanted pretty much everything. Wipe, disable camera, password type, password length, password expiration, encrypt phone, disable sd card, etc etc. It had everything and probably because my company just checked everything. Now the question is if it would really do any of those things probably not because that it a further settings in Exchange but it just wants to be able to do all that.
The Outlook just wanted password rules, unlock attempts, lock screen, and encrypt phone. It asked to encrypt and I said no and phone still works. I was able to keep pattern lock screen but it disabled everything else besides pin and password. The Outlook app does not integrate well with Android so everything is contained in it's own app. I don't think it does notifications either since I sent an email and waited a good 10 minutes. My phone never went off but I open the app the email shows up but never as a notification.
So maybe the Outlook app will get you by for the time being.

I also have an old Galaxy S3 running 5.1.1 (PacMan rom) - that has Gmail with Exchange working just fine. It has the same version of Gmail as on the G4, but also has "Exchange Services" running. I can't find any other information on that though.
[EDIT] I just checked the link in the OP which looks like the latest apk, but the button for Play Store doesn't work - URL doesn't exist.
Quick question - I haven't disabled LG Exchange on the G4 yet - when I do it says that the app will be hidden from then on. What if one wants to re-enable it - will it still be visible on the Apps menu ?

Yes, just go to your apps in settings and it will be under 'disabled'.
Just switched things over, and Gmail Exchange is working nicely now

Have you been able to figure this out? I have coworkers on a N6, N5, and a HTC One (M7), who all have our Corporate E-mail linked to their phone via either gmail or the htc e-mail app. They can all access their respective Smart Lock settings. On my phone, its grayed out.
Confused on what this does? Just lets you add a second exchange account to gmail? Are emails mixed together or do they remain separated? I like having my Email and Gmail in 2 different apps. I also like the LG email app.
