[Q] GT-I9505 lags on 2D games - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a problem with performance on Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 running lollipop on firmware.
I disabled some bloatware to get performance (and it helped a quite) and, using Greenify, hibernated some useless processes.
These are not making any problem.
I don't know why, but few 2D games stutters one time per 3-15 seconds. However, any 3D games like Modern Combat 5 have excellent performance.
In Developer options, force use GPU doesn't help very well (or other changes in it). S Voice isn't using home key.
However on GT-I9195 (S4 mini) these games were working perfectly smooth (excluding 3D games )
Clearing cache partition didn't helped. Even after factory reset and running only Geometry Dash or Super Hexagon these games still stutter as before.
What can cause this problem? Or somebody gets same performance issue?

Nobody got same problem? :/

Stock firmware? You're likely dealing with Samsung's DVFS. Find an app to disable it and see if that helps.

Thanks you for answer and an idea, however I haven't been going to root my device yet.

Then you'll just have to deal with the lag, as DVFS is baked into Samsung ROMs. Only by rooting can you eliminate the lag, either by using DVFS Disabler and Xposed, or using a custom ROM that doesn't have DVFS.

Same here with some older games, espesh 2D ones.. Knights of Pen and Paper to name one.... It's a problem from the app side, yet to be optimized for newer devices, as far as I know, anyway....
Probably optimization issues. The S4 is likely to be able to handle a light game on 1080p, but a full blown game may lag due to the weak (for its resolution) Adreno 320. Seeing that the Mali 400 series GPU made up more than 25% of the GPU market share, the developers probably put in huge amounts of effort to optimize their apps for that chipset, so the S2/S3 runs them well.

even tried a custom kernel that tweaks the gpu up to 2.3 mhz, well it works on the speed and sped up a bit playing PVZ2 v1.7 but still i could see the stuttering, still not smooth as on s3. hope its just the app and not the cpu/gpu issues.

Same problem here. 4.3 made my SP really really slow . Almost in every app I got 'not responding' messages. Only 125 MB free ram, even without much additional apps besides stock. Just downgraded to 4.1 and everything is back to normal. My advice: don't upgrade unless you really need to. Perhaps 4.4 might work better with regards to ram.

Yes but i have 450 mb ram. Maybe CE is broken, and try to install another?
I installed an australian version in the release day and have no problems, no lag anywhere
Ok im installed the australian version and its the same... lags and slow, crappy phone..
my apps are all responsive when i manage to open them without the "so and so" has stopped working
I am using CE and no problems whatsoever :/ in fact my games run far better!

I'm on CE version too, and have no promblem, all game still run fast
No problems in me either. Maybe you guys have too much ram eating apps in background.

I have random write 0.11, on 4.1 i have 0.35, what i can do with this? I dont have root because i dont want to unlock bootloader.
Full fresh installation may solve the problem

I do this, all clean, not only me have this problem In 3d games is very good.
I don't get this. Even before I removed the bloatware and tweaked my ram the performance for me was better than old rom (except perhaps with doomkernel). Install as clean as possible (format system as well as data) delete all bloatware and AVOID advanced kernel as it is buggy. Try enabling force gpu rendering to fix 2D games

[Q] i9505 lagging on heavy games

My phone was lagging on heavy games such as Dead Effect, End of tomorrow and asphalt 8. My phone also lags on 2d games such as virtual city (heavy volume objects). I thought that s4 was a good phone but now I had a bad impression in gaming.
Anyway, I am using Phoenix rom v8.
I have no idea if the "rom" affects the game because of some scripts or is it just my phone. I really have no idea what was causing.
Is it because of ext2sd? Greenify?
I optimize the ram before I play and see if 50% of ram and below is available.
I am a noob? Yes.

Sounds like it may be the DVFS introduced by Samsung that a lot of people have problems with. There is a way of disabling this, check the link below.
DVFS disabler thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/app-disable-samsung-touchwiz-dvfs-t2676916
Disabler app (install Xposed first)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ma.wanam.dvfs
Thank you so much!! To be honest, I didn't know it was the cause of bottleneck. I tested some games including the ones I mention and yeah, it was awfully working now as it is..
(And thanks mOd for mOving my thread. ?)

I'm sticking with Kit Kat + Xposed until it supports ART (might take forever, don't care), but if you find a way please tell me. I get freezes when trying to use the blacklist feature.
EDIT: I've been rocking lollipop for 2 months now and I don't regret it. DVFS is kind of not needed when you have a kernel (like ultimate Kernel) capable of adjusting the minimum gpu clock. The throttle only kicks in for the cpu when considerably hot, so it's fine! Plus, the gpu problem on LP is simply due to too aggressive gpu throttling, which is non existent if you set the minimum clock manually. I'm sure of the information above
also interested on this!....

@gabrielgon Thanks for the reply man! Im aware since at&t note 4 users are still waiting for root we wont be able to switch kernels! Any work arounds without root?
I dont have problem with daily use of my phone! The problem only appears when playing gpu intensive games like (COD Heroes) the phone starts lagging after 5mins of play! Was wondering if we can do something about it since we cant disable dvfs on lollipop or have root!?

I'm really sorry to hear, man. I've been there in the very beginning. I'm trying to think things you could do but they all require root. You can look for an app or some other way to lower your resolution to 1080 that don't require root, even though the one I use does. This could help, but wont solve your problem most definitely. Lollipop is very aggressive on the gpu, so going back to kit kat is another option, but I can't guarantee you will have no lags on that game. Most people don't play a lot/heavy games so much, so I guess samsung don't care to make an out of the box gaming phone, which is a shame.
If you find a way to disable DVFS, tell me! And when you get your hands on root and keep having lag, you cam PM me!
PS: Changing Roms maybe? (if it can be done without root, dunno)

[Q][I9500] GTA San Andreas

Can i9500 run gta san andreas maxed out smoothly without lags?
If you got lag then you need to install Xposed and then install the DVFS disabler. That will probably solve your lag.
I have i9505 quad core variant which can't play the game at low settings without lag. I know about dvfs disabler. But I wanted to know from users if i9500 can run this game at max settings without lag. Then I will switch from i9505 to i9500.
I'm on custom rom and I don't get any lags using i9505

With the i9505 you can play the game very good, smooth and stable. may be therĀ“re some other problems with your phone might be the reason for your lag, may be bad wifi or mobile connection?
my phone was able to play this game at low and medium settings without any lag before updating to official lollipop.
Actually I saw a video of a Russian guy playing gta san andreas maxed out settings without any lags on i9500 with better frame per second. I never saw a video of i9505 play this game at max settings without lags and horrible fps.
The GT-I9500 has a better GPE frequency. Probably that's why it can get better FPS.
Anyway, you should be able to play GTA San Andreas without any problems. I installed it on a friends GT-I9505 and it worked flawlessly on default settings. It was running a Google Play Edition rom, though.
Don't know about stock roms, but on custom you shouldn't have any lags.
