Just got a fresh update from 4.4.2 to 5.1, here are some of my concerns and opinions so far:
- the main thing that I have noticed is that the colors got a bit washed out or less vivid compared to when I was in Kitkat or is it the same across all lollipop devices? After the discovery of the hidden performance menu by some people here in XDA, you can turn off Tegra Prism there and fix this issue
- the 5.1 stock launcher was the same as the 4.4.2 launcher.
- animations are nice
- IMO, did not noticed much of a speed difference, maybe because our hardware is already powerful to begin with.
- so far battery life remains more or less the same as it was in Kitkat
Well, those are just the things that I have noticed upon my recent updating of my tablet.
Update:
- SD Card Write restrictions is the same as it was in Kitkat, only some apps can write or create files on the SD Card. MS Office for Tablets and TN7's own Write app still can't write or create files to SD Card (or I think it depends on the apps if developers add the ability to write files on the SD Card?)
- No stock gallery and video player app but ES File Explorer may suffice in viewing photos and videos though.

The official OTA update. Probably being released by NVidia in waves as I have heard some TN7s still don't have the update yet.
New concern, there is no option to turn off auto brightness not the adaptive brightness. I know you can turn off the adaptive brightness in the settings but no option to turn off auto brightness. It is unpleasing to eyes seeing the screen brightness fluctuating. Never had this problem when I was in kitkat but the fluctuating screen brightness in 5.1 lollipop is only noticeable when brightness set to low levels

I can't tell as I don't use a magnetic slide cover, I don't know what that is even. Terribly Sorry.
Could you tell us which model you have? I'm hearing that the P-1988 is getting the update, but I've not heard anything yet about the original P-1640. Shame I always seem to be one of the last to get the updates pushed to me considering I pre-ordered this thing in November 2013... no love for early adopters.

It's the official cover for the tablet, and there's been a bug since launch where if the screen wakes from the cover, the touchscreen can become erratic and unresponsive until you lock/wake with the power button. You can test this with any small magnet placed just to the right of the front facing camera... if the bug still exists, removing the magnet to wake the screen should cause the same problem.

I really can't tell but I think it's the P-1988? It only says "Tegra Note 7" in the Model Number.

Yes it still works and other than the washed out screen colors and fluctuating screen brightness that's really noticeable when brightness is set to low level, I have not encountered any other bugs or issues yet.
If you go into the About Tablet section, it should state the Model number. The EVGA Tegra Note I have says it is a P1640 and has not received anything yet. I assume yours may be another branded model?
I did get some sort of OTA ghost announcement a few weeks ago that said I had an update, but it didn't download anything and said I was up to date when I went and checked. Was a bit odd but I am in no rush still. The thing works great for what I do on it.

Yeah, if that's what it says then it's the P1988, because the P1640 will actually say TegraNote-P1640. I'm guessing that since the 1988 has a smaller user base and is a little more complicated than the 1640, they're probably starting there to make sure it works before pushing the update to everyone else on the 1640. I sure hope we don't have long to wait!

I had that too! I got so excited, but when I went to install it, it just said I was up to date. Maybe Nvidia pushed their test ROM out by accident and immediately deleted it but with no way to undo the notification that went out.

Did you go into the Display settings? You should be able to turn off auto-brightness there, and in the Power settings you should be able to disable Nvidia's Prism battery saver which will wash out your colors and make the brightness do weird things. Also be sure to check if the color correction is set to sRGB or Native; sRGB is a little more color-accurate, but it has to reduce the color gamut to do this as opposed to using Native which uses the full color gamut of the display.

The adaptive brightness is already off yet the fluctuating brightness still persist. These is no Nvidia Prism battery saver anymore after the 5.1 update. The color correction preset is set to sRGB by default and even when I switch to native it does not make much of a difference to the colors

Poor Samsung. First, everyone *****ed about the panning box they used to allow you to move through a note you're working on. Then, they changed it and replaced it with a scroll bar and people are *****ing about that too. I don't know which version of S-Note you're on but in the version included in JB with "only recognize the S-Pen" enabled it's really really hard to inadvertantly hit the scroll bars so maybe that'll solve your problem. As for the brightness being ramped up in S-Note I get the logic and it shows how much they think about how people use their devices and apps. If you think about, since the Note's a drawing device, people could be using it at any angle and in any position. Disabling auto-brightness kind of makes sense so that the screen doesn't fade in and out if someone's hand is over the ambient light sensor. Oh well, you can't please all the people all the time.

Doesn't mean that you can't flash another rom...
I don't use autobrightness so it changing the levels drives me absolutely nuts. E.g. I'm working in a dark room so have the level turned down to what suits me best. I open snoteb and up it goes. I turn it back down manually, jump to another app for a moment for whatever reason, say to read some info in a pdf, switch back to snote and, bam, blinded again.
There's a reason why autobrightness can be toggled on and off, and one app ignoring that convention is infuriating.
actually if you use autobrightness, the brightness levels still change
"Disabling auto-brightness kind of makes sense so that the screen doesn't fade in and out if someone's hand is over the ambient light sensor. Oh well, you can't please all the people all the time."
If this is the case, then there are definitely better solutions than the one Samsung implemented. For example, putting a timer on the ambient light sensor so it doesn't react to accidentally being covered up. If it's only briefly covered up, the brightness won't change. If it's really in a dark room and sensing low light with no interruption for say 1 minute, then change the brightness.
So, it's hard to believe that Samsung would make SNote change the brightness autmoatically as a "feature". Samsung makes great products, but we dont have to idolize them the way that iOS Sheep idolize Apple.

If you're referring to me I chose the Teg3 One X over the SGS3 and am very happy with my choice. Here's a demonstration of my lack of idolization. In JB, putting the multiview selector to the right of the more important and more often used "settings" selector wasn't very well thought out from a usability perspective.
S-Note turning up the brightness works fine for me and I kind of like it since auto-brightness tends to be on the dim side normally. I'd probably like it less if I frequently took notes in a dark room which I don't. I don't assume everyone uses their device like I do so I certainly wouldn't invoke my opinion of a feature on others.
This is why I use lecture notes.

You can't upgrade or downgrade S-Note with just the single APK. There are supporting files that have to be changed along with it. When PDF import was borked on some versions of S-Note folks tried to update it with a newer version of the APK alone and it failed.
Actualy, I did the backup with titaniun but when I tried to restore now I am getting FC. Any idea how can I fix it then?

Yes they can, they can let us make up our own mind as to what level of brightness we want, the same as we do with every other app. Why bother having a brightness setting at all if that's the case, just get rid of it entirely as they know better.

I am hoping Samsung starts selling higher capacity models, so that people start selling used 16GB for cheap and I'll root that for some research, and game playing. Really, the only feature I kinda want is to to run sixaxis with an untethered PS3 controller.

My status bar still isn't pitch black. Not sure if it was any more gray.
As for notification toggles it is in settings -> Display -> notification panel
You can easily turn status bar black with xposed framework. You don't even have to flash anything, just have root access.

It depends on the origin of your phone. The 4.1.2 update hasn't been released to everyone yet. Patience.
Guess I'm not sure of the origin of the phone. I'm thinking it is the international version (not sure how to tell), so was hoping that would mean I would be one of the first to get the update. Apparently that is not the case.
I had 4.1.2 flashed on my Infuse 4G, so right now I'm really missing the features 4.1.1 is missing. Hope it drops soon.

probably nothing beneficial for the N6... looks like it's only going to be for the N7 and N9... much like the 5.0.2 release was never "official" for the N6.

Well it's using a tegra chip. All other nexus are using Qualcomm chips. Minus the 9 which is also late to the party.
The N6 is already a great device. What would make it stand above the rest is for it to be natively as smooth and lag free as the N5 is and to add some minor battery life improvements.

Has there ever been any type of resolution to this? My phone does this as well. Don't want to return it for a refurbished Verizon phone that has a high change of also having the same problem. Don't want to root and lose Samsung capabilities and void the warranty. Just had a software update TODAY, this very morning and it didn't fix it. Call Samsung and they play stupid and act like they've never heard of it. This isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things but at the end of the day when I'm trying to read at night or just browse the web and I have my bedroom lights off, I want my screen to be vivid and bright, but I get dull and dim.

What discourages me the most is that I just got this phone about 2 weeks ago and noticed this within the first few days. I google this problem and I see threads being posted about this mostly starting in April of 2015. We're now in late October and this is still going on, which leads me to believe Samsung is just not acknowledging the issue at all. I'm tempted to root just to fix this, but don't want to void the warranty and lose Samsung features like the edge notifications and clock.

Have you tried going into settings > Display > Screen Mode and switching off/changing from Adaptive display? Adaptive display is the default setting and this also messes with your brightness and colors dependent on your ambient lighting.
This is a well known bug on most S6's - Looks like a Firmware update should fix this issue.
Turn auto brightness off and set to max brightness ,then hold the phone to a bright light you will see the brightness dim after a few seconds, +BUG+

When I bought this phone two weeks ago I was excited at the prospect of rooting it so that I could install my "goto" root apps.
I pondered it for several days and was about to root yet another device and I changed my mind. I find I am enjoying Oreo just the way it is and for me this is a nice change. I tend to root/jailbreak everything immediately. In the end flashing rom updates and fixes actually started to give me anxiety. I found myself dreading updates and it was becoming a real chore and wasn't fun anymore.
Anyone else enjoy this phone without tinkering with or modifying it?

With Oreo I do not feel the need for root anymore.
On Nougat I used root for KCAL, build.prop mods for 16bit.pcm.offloading & zero shutter lag and also mods for stereo speakers & no throttle.
But I've yet to come across any burn in on Oreo, maybe they fixed it by recalculating the default KCAL values?
They've also fixed the issue of 44.1Khz audio being output as 48Khz through the DAC.
Could also be placebo but I find the DAC to perform better now on Oreo.
I'd love to have zero shutter lag & stereo speakers but that's just a mild annoyance hardly anything to worry about.
The weird thing is that my performance have seeming increased going to Oreo from having the performance mods on Nougat.
The left picture is on Nougat and the other one on Oreo.
Now that I think about it, silent camera would be nice for the default camera. If the setting is there I can't find it. Thanks for the side by side. Interesting.
Yeah, I don't need to root this thing either. I have had this almost a year now. Upgrade to Oreo, and now happier then ever.
May be in future once we Pie ROM with second screen feature, I will think about it.
I used to have a Samsung Note 5, and rooted and flash plenty of times. But, it was a pain to keep up with updates. I learned my lesson to not root Android.

In the end flashing rom updates and fixes actually started to give me anxiety. I found myself dreading updates and it was becoming a real chore and wasn't fun anymore.

I imagine this is how most get out of the rooting game.
There has to be a serious need to do so and not just for the sake of it.
Though i still believe unless you gain admin rights over your device you do not own it.

First time not rooting in about 10 years, running Oreo and so far everything is good (battery life, performance, features). I haven't even re-installed Nova Launcher, the home with app drawer has been good enough.
The one thing I'm missing is forcing it to 3g/CDMA since I'm on Verizon and where we live in Colorado, there is more and stronger 3g towers than LTE so I've always saved a lot of battery by locking to CDMA and not hunting/swapping for LTE towers. I'm mostly at home so I've got wifi for any real data needs. So other than that one thing, I haven't had a real need to root. So far...

If you have your msl you can force 3g or you can install Xposed and I think there's a module for that. Inteli3g
This is the first time I've rooted a phone for a while, due to the screen retention issue. Else, stock or AOSP unrooted is enough considering most features are available these days

Thanks for replying, I've been trying to get into the field service menu for the last couple of days but will probably have to call VZW and try to convince them to give it to me.
Re: Xposed, since that requires root, that was the one reason I miss having root (Xposed to be able to force 3g, that's how I did it on my old rooted phones).

That wasn't my experience with Oreo on my H918. Perhaps I need to try it again. As I recall, I still had screen retention issues, which is what ultimately led me to rooting my phone to use KCAL. I would really like for this phone to NOT be rooted.

Close to two months after my quoted message I can tell you that my phone do indeed suffer from screen retention. The first month i.e up to sometime in February I did not notice any screen retention - but since having sold my computer and using my phone for much more it has started to reveal itself.
It's only visible in one app, and that's Discord with its dark gray background and the 'retention' is that of the keyboard close to the edge of the screen.
Considering the circumstance around my screen retention, that for now, my V20 is my main 'machine'. I'm not that bothered by it, I have a PC coming in next week - and if I remember I'll tune in some weeks after it has arrived and update whether or not it's gone(with decreased usage).
For me I had had enough with screen burn and rooted this phone in last December.

Yeah, I realized I dug up an old post. Sorry about that.
I may have to try running my phone in a stock form to see how bad it really is. I'm running into some weird issues with, presumably with Magisk, and I want to unroot my phone. The only real reason I can't is because of the screen retention issue.

Oh it's no problem, sorry if my post came off as offensive.
It is really not bad at all, and I might elaborate om the issue that it's only really beginning to show later in the day.

See, mine will show retention minutes after being booted. For example, after a fresh install of a ROM, be it LOS or Stock, I'll start noticing ghosting before I can get into the color settings or Kernel Adiutor to make the adjustments... that's just from the time in TWRP and the booting. I guess everyone's phone it a little different.
