I got the note 4 yesterday, a day ahead of most people. I've been testing it throughly and to my shock, I'm finding my note 3 running MOAR to be working faster, longer, and better.
Take for example the photo below. The note 4 is on the left and the note 3 running MOAR on the right. Isn't it amazing the difference in quality?
I don't blame the phone. I blame 4.4.4 for messing up what could have been an awesome smart phone. I'm returning mine today.
Battery? The note 4 battery is at 48% at 1:00 pm while my note 3 is at 80%. I use gsam battery and it breaks down what is using battery and the system and kernel on the note 4 are using almost 30% while the note 3 uses about 18%.
So, for all those of you that own a note 3, beware, you will be disappointed if you upgrade.
And if my advise saved you from disappointment, I believe a thank you would be in order.
new battery ........ give it a week of cycles
Samsung came out and said there was an issue with the battery last week. They have already issued an update. Tmobile started getting it today. We should be getting it in the ne,t fews days. Search google for comparisons of this version and the update. Battery seems fixed after the update.
I actually think the lefthand picture looks better.
Brighter doesn't mean better.
Hard to compare something you've used for a year to something you just got. Give it some time.
Good to hear they've got a fix for the battery. Actually, I flashed 4.4.4 on my note 3 and it was eating up my battery as well. Hope they release a fix for those that upgraded their note 3s to 4.4.4.
But seriously, the camera was my biggest disappointment.
And the photos don't lie.
I guess that if there is any good news is that the note 4 will be the first one to get lollipop and that should take care of many issues. Feb my bet.

I'm gonna have to agree ENkrypt.. The picture on the left looks much clearer and realistic while the one on the right looks way off like a insta gram filter was on top of it (excuse my lack of the appropriate vocabulary in describing camera quality).
And I ditto the fact that you need to give the new battery some full to dead cycles before you can make an accurate statement on the battery life. Also of course on your Note 3 with MOAR has plenty of the bloat and pointless background processes removed which play a huge factor.

I'm in phone envy. I could kick myself in the ass right now for getting the s5 when it came out and not waiting for the note4

It seems like you don't want to like the phone. Lol. First, you are comparing performance between a phone that has stock firmware on it to a phone that is rooted and has an optimized custom rom. That's not a comparison. As far as the pictures, I'm agreeing with everyone else the one on the left looks better. The one on the right looks like you either have a filter on it or flash. And it still doesn't look as good as the other. The Note 3 is a great phone, but the 4 is just better. And the cameras are definitely night and day. But to each his own. You won't know what you are missing once the devs start to give this thing some love.

Note 4 is not that huge as an upgrade. Should stick to note 3 till note 5 comes or you got alot of money.
Nope. I don't agree that it isn't a big enough upgrade. The camera is better. The screen is better. The pen is better. The multi window is easier. I love the fingerprint scanner -- which is the thing I thought I'd have no use for! It feels better in my hand. I know I'll find more as I use the phone, but so far I think it was a great upgrade from the Note 3.
Samsung Rolled out an OTA update to fix battery problem on the launch day.
and for camera try using other camera apps and then please inform me about cam result. Congrats for a New Note 4.

I respect all of your opinions and I'm leaving your remarks as they stand. I am an android enthusiast and was looking forward to the note 4. But I'm totally bummed out, because it's not what they told us in all those youTube videos. Here's my analysis:
1. SIRI finally found human, one button access, works.* Google Now also works on note 4, not note 3.
2. Camera is sub-par to MOAR on note 3, but Turning off HDR makes photos acceptable.* Completed multiple photos. Note 3 is unquestionable the better camera: saturation, clarity, color, etc.
3.Battery:* Android sys consumers 30% plus of battery.* Forums say there's a patch coming.* After testing both batteries, note 4 is holding more power than note 3.
4. Found a cool case on Amazon.
5. The new multi window feature is a lie. doesn't work because it's app depended, not hardware depended.
6. Not rooted.* Android L (lollipop) is probably months away.* Hackers will have a note 3 version before the official release for note 3.
7. Can't use any of my rooted apps or features like moving apps to ext card.
8.* Rebate from Samsung smells like a rip-off.* They advertised a $200 rebate, but fine print days otherwise.* It says it's $200 minus value of tradein.
9. I will have to buy new batteries.
10.* No significant increase on speed or performance. Same as note 3.
11. My note 3 is running smooth. Just minor bugs that are doable.
12. Will get my $375.00 refunded.
13. Maybe note 5 will be the one with major improvements. Note 4 improvements over note 3 are really minor in comparison.
14. Well, I discovered that if I hold down right button, I can still access menu.* Many apps haven't placed the menu on top right like Google asked.* No QC.
15. I do have 12 days to **** with it before returning. Put the nice case on it and continue experimenting.
16. It's full potential will not be reached until I rooted it and get rid of 4.4.4
17. Speaker is now on the back, not at the bottom where you can heart it.
18. Honestly believe note 4 camera flash to be weaker.
19. Damn, I ripped off the velcro. Will have to get more velcro.
20. It was expected to be water proof like the Galaxy S5,* but it's not water proof.
21. The stylus does have nice feature. It works now like mouse. You can freely highlight text unlike the note 3 that you have to curse and pray simultaneously to capture text.
22. The USSA app still won't split into multi window mode.
23. I'll do full battery comparison today.
24. YouTube has adds on note 4, not note 3.
25. Just watched YouTube video and note 3 screen is way brighter than note 4.
26. Videos load faster on note 3.
27. I set both displays to auto and note 3 is definitely brighter and easier to see.
28.Programs open slightly faster on note 3.
29. Even though note 4 allows you to copy and paste,* I can buy app (which I will) that gives same capability to note 3.
30. Most apps on note 4 can't be minimized.
31. Watching netflix you can't tell difference of screen quality.
32. Speaker:* Note 3 has better speaker sound and location.* Speaker on back was not good idea.
33. The note 4 has only one antenna and thus you can't make a call and. surf at the same time.
So take it for what it's worth. In a way, I'm proud that all my hacking with my note 3 produced a better phone. Those who wish to argue, fuzz, and complain about my remarks, go for it. I'm a ex-combat warrior. My skin is thick.
Hmmmm.... I've seen a post like this before.
On the Note 2 vs Note 3 thread...
I went from my Note 3 to the Note 4 and so far I am happy with my new phone. The screen is absolutely gorgeous!
I was eligible for an upgrade so I didn't have to pay a dime for my Note 4. I do not think the differences are enough to run out and sell your Note 3 either.
One thing I do not like about the Note 4 is the speaker is now on the back of the phone. I absolutely hate that!! The phone is very fast and my battery life is outstanding. I also love how I can charge my phone in like 30 mins.
I have had the 2, the 3 , and now the 4. I still have my 3 and the wifey has the 2. Here's my take on the 3 vs 4. The new screen is ridiculous. I bought the 4 just for the screen actually. The brightness outdoors, on auto brightness the 4 is slightly brighter. Some don't like the speaker on the back but I do. When I don't have my headphones, the sound reverberates better when on the kickstand than the 3, shooting the sound to the right. I always found myself cupping my hand near the speaker to hear the sound. The speaker may not sound as good as the 3 but it is way louder than the 3. I remember everyone saying that the 3 wasn't that great of an upgrade over the 2. Personally it was well worth it.

Some of the things you posted are opinions, i won't comment on them. But other things either don't make sense according to facts or you are comparing a stock samsung rom to a custom rom. There is no comparison there. I kinda wonder if you are trolling.

I'm very satisfied with Sony's stock rom. It has far less unnecessary bloatware compared to Samsungs Touchwiz so personally don't feel the need to use anything other than a rooted stock rom with Xposed modules, and lets not forget how great a device the Z2 is.
I've been a diehard Samsung fan for years. I've had galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, S5........ Note, note 2, note 3, note 10.1 and note 10.1 2014. This is my first Sony since the smart phone revolution and I can honestly say I'm really impressed. I've only had it about 3 weeks and have not rooted it or anything. The only thing I have done is debrand it. It's great for playing games. The camera is fantastic. But most of all, battery life compared to any Samsung phone I've had is absolutely amazing. I used to get 1 full day out of my note 3 and charged it every night (the most battery life I had left at the end of the day was 30% and that was with only light use). I charged my Z2 last night for the first time in 3 days. Battery usage one the 3 days consisted of a few hours of watching YouTube videos, a couple of hours of playing games ( RollerCoaster Tycoon & asphalt 8). Checking in/posting on Facebook throughout the 3 days, and about an hour of surfing the Internet. I only have two complaints about the Z2 and they are, tap to wake is hit and miss at best, and the flap to cover the charging port wouldn't stay closed but I fixed this by giving it a good clean with a baby wipe. I always have the same brands in my devices so now i'm changing from my note 10.1 to Z2 tablet.

I have had a very similar story and experience. Samsung phones and tabs for years and now Z3 Tablet Compact and Z2. I am happy. Did not mod anything, but neither could I with Samsung Note 3 because of Knox...
Note 3 is a very good device, has a wider screen and a stylus, but this Xperia are way out faster and have a great battery ( let me say that for the same usage it goes on for the double of time...).
Camera here is less good for point & shot but generally better. Important is also water resistance and the possibility to use the phone with gloves and even a normal pencil (I find it useful when it is cold).
Samsung roms are full of functions that you won't find here (reading mode, block mode, car drive mode, apps for kids and so on), but everything is far from being quick and responsive.
In Xperia Z2 everything just happens when you click.
Moreover, ultra stamina mode is perfwct when you are with a mere 15% or 10% and can still call and text for one day.
In conclusion, two good phones. I am happy with my change from Note 3 to Z2.

I have used S2, S3, S4 and always been a Samsung fan. But lately I grew tired of the bloatware they keep on adding, the near useless features and their plastic build. The only thing that preventing me from buying Sony Xperia was their awful screen from Z to Z1, its only a TFT LCD screen compared to AMOLED from Samsung. Then came Z2 with IPS LCD display and from that moment I bought one, and never ever been disappointed. The UI is faster, less clutter, less bloatware, the camera is awesome, as well as the audio quality. Premium finish, glass front and back and metal on the sides, Noise cancelling headphones (its a steal!) and waterproof as an extra!
Yes, although development is significantly slow in Sony team, but even by using stock rom, battery life is superb, giving me 2 days like a piece of cake. You dont need a removable battery anymore. Existenz rom is good enough for my Z2. Not that Note 3 is bad, its way better if you multitask a lot and a bigger screen.
Yeah the multiwindow feature on the note 3 is really tempting.... Is there such mod for the xperia?

The only devices on which I have really used multiwindows were Note 8 and Note 10. In my opinipn even a 5.7" is too small for a useful multiwindows use.
On Xperia you have useful miniapps. Torch, browser, inbox and some other (limited) apps that you can play in windows.

If you asked me i will tell you to get lg g3 everything much better than z2 and note 3 the camera and screen the battery on z2 better than g3 but everything else better on g3
Whatever you do don't get the g3, it lags, overheats, has bad battery compared to z2, no stereo speakers, no waterproof, no premium feeling, screen is dim and it's not as vivid and it also has halo effect.. The list could go on forever

Still seems like new really.
I recommend it.

its actually better than hardware keys as the google now experience is better with software keys, also you have 5.2" real estate, even after navigation bar you get 5" which is same as most of the other phones on market. and navigation bar is transparent, just the keys are visible which hide in background depending on app or get reduced to three dots.
Oddly i find the onscreen keys fairly nice
I originaly thought they were enoying and a waste of space but it feels like hardare keys with the Z2, Exept they disapear in games, movies and youtube (apps simular )
Hello,
Is the call quality comparable with other smartphones? I just read about some issues with the voice quality in phone calls with some older firmwares. I didn't find some information about new software versions.

I myself have never had an issue with call quality or anything for that matter and I've had the phone for about a month and half now....came from a note 3 and the only thing I miss is the ir blaster lol the note 3 was a glitch fest and touchwiz constantly crashed (common issue). Never have I felt the need to flash a Rom on the z2 which is a nice change

no
all Xperia's can be rooted one way or another
typically i just unlock my bootloader and install recovery and then install root via recovery but most people prefer to keep their warranty within grasp
How long will the note 3 live?
The reason i am asking is because with all these new hardware and new android updates, i feel my privacy is withering away, and am pretty much in absolute authority and control of my current note 3 (4.4.2 kitkat).
i.e there is no way in hell i am buying a phone with a fingerprint scanner or use a software that isnt compatible with xposed modules like xprivacy.
So how long can i keep this phone, be up to date with high-specs requiring apps and also have my privacy at the same time?
How long will the phone live depends on your usage and luck. It might last three years, four years, five years, no one knows.
You can understand that what hardware is latest, what's not. Note 3 N9005 uses SD 800, while SD 810 is the latest. And does that matter to you? Again, depends on your usage, I mean if you always want the latest and greatest then Note 3 is slightly behind the line, but if you are just an average user then well, its still a great phone.
If you like KitKat (you should because its stable) and as you said Xposed compatibility etc., then keep the phone as long as you can. No one has the right to play with our privacy, totally with you there.
Hardware wise, for regular use it'll hold out very well for at least 2 more years.
With proper management (debloating, custom launcher and proper care) 3-4 years.
You may need to replace the battery at some point though. Those don't last that long.
I've got a 2.5 year old S3 that still runs smoothly in everyday use. And that's the 1GB RAM Exynos version. Considering that, a 3GB RAM Snapdragon 800 device will last at least 5-6 years before it starts struggling to keep up.
Sent From My Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N9005 Using Tapatalk
Then maybe a feature phone is safer. Without updates it gets boring. You can use custom roms so you don't need to have fingerprints stored or don't use that feature. There is always a privacy risk nowadays no matter what android you use. Old versions may be at risk as the newer versions get updates etc. You don't have to worry unless you do some "rare" things. Who cares what game you play or which movie you like. For usual people it doesn't matter unless you are sure that your privacy is misused. I was thinking same before but don't care about small things as life will be more tough and i would worry about apps..... Love life instead ^^
It will last loong
My first android was Samsung galaxy I which lasted until note 3 showed - featuring big support from a lot of people who made that phone blazing fast apart from official ROM which was horrible - it lasted loong. For the same thing Note 3 will probably last as much since no significant improvement will be made with future phones.
This phone is feature rich and powerfull, it has really big community and a lot of users. Apart from the hardware related features any software changes can be ported from future phones to this one. And as it gets older it will only be less buggy than freshly new phones.
Well this is my point of view at least and i think i will stick to this baby for as long as it works and boots up! (unless 4k becames standard as 1920x1080 is now that way i might reconsider my view).
Yep note 3 specifications are good to go another 2 years.. But now sammy makes beautiful devices, specifically gs6 and edge are very beautiful.. I think note 5 will be more beautiful.. Becase of that some time we have to go for new divice..
Updated to lollipop and it still runs like a champ. Kitkat is even more stable and kinda feels more practical as well, especially when opening the recent apps menu where you have to wait an eternity.
3gb of ram and a snapdragon 800 should have no problems for at least 2 more years. After that there will probably come other games or apps with higher requirements.
I have a Samsung Galaxy note 3 N9005 and I have a hard time looking for original Samsung note 3 battery in Malaysia. I was able to get a good battery because it was included with a new charger (the white clam shell version)
Try a phone repair store. They would know how to get a good replacement.
I still have 2 left.
FYI
I just put a 256 GB Samsung Select EVO card (39.99) and it works fine.
Plays 4GB movie files just fine. (08-2019)

I'm confused and very hesitant about upgrading , I have a note 4 and I love it but like I said I'm very hesitant and reluctant to upgrade because I don't want to be a slave to a charger.....this is the number one reasons I hate Iphones besides not being able to expand the memory you can't switch out the battery, and you become as I stated a slave to a charger. Also I want to know if you are rooted & running the latest software does it make a difference what device you have? I know a friend of mine who has an s6 and I know one who has a note 5&6 their constantly charging it because the battery is constantly dying. can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to a note 5 if I cant expand the memory?
Can anyone tell me weather I'm doing the right thing, Or can anyone tell me anything to rest aside my fears concerning upgrading. ......thanks
I think best upgrade from note 4 is now s7 edge.
S8 is not anymore samsung phone becaus there`s no HW buttons and screen look ... WTF? WTF? ... pain in eyes so no thanks.
Still note 4 is amazing device but I think only exynos version becaus on Snapdragon if u have screen time 3 hours u can be happy of Exynos 6 hours sot.
I have 910F with snapdragon and low SOT is reason why i want to upgrade. (OR i need replace mainboard for 910C)
I did not upgrade my Note4 until the Note7 came out. Then it go recalled so went back to the Note4. I can swap the battery around when I want and I have a 256gb microSD card installed. It's still a great phone I say keep it.
I have rooted my Note4 and have a Note7 rom installed. It works really well.

There's really not a lot of good phones to upgrade to with as much features as the Note 4. Closest by far is the LG V20 and Huawei Mate 9.
I'm actually aiming for the BlackBerry KeyOne cuz how good the battery life will be, I'll wait for a full review though.
Im sad of 910F (snapdragon) battery life. I looking for 910C (Exynos) but in my country is quite imposible
Short Answer: The Note 4 won't be beaten by new phones. Only if you are willing to sacrifice 2 features. The pen, and the removable battery. But for the next 2 to 3 years, it will stand alone on the throne.
Swapped the battery in the beginning of the year, because it died down with some shutdowns after 2 years of usage. No Shutdown since then, I have low SOT but still got 3 days instead of 2 before (910F). Just imagine having a phone with a fixed battery, you would either have to live unhappy with it or buy a new phone. The display is absolutely fine, no AMOLED aging problems yet.
It got a fine camera, 4k video, QHD Display, fast processing power and UI, good battery life, and a pen. That's so far stuff the note 4 has, and isn't worse than recent phones in a considerable amount in any of the things it does.
I crave for an even bigger display (something like 6 - 6,4 inch with 16:9), dual sim (with the bands I need), small bezels, and durable design on the edges (no bent display). I mean man, i dropped the note 4 so many times. The metal frame got damaged like it should, and the display hasn't broken yet.
Future Galaxy Notes won't get bigger in my opinion (Samsung using 2:1 ratio, only good for movies), and even after the note 7 disaster, removable batteries are going to be even less common (like no flagship phones have them anymore).
My only hope are smaller asian companies. But even Xiaomi (who are not small in any way, but they show to have the guts and put money into development of innovative phones like the Mi Mix), won't introduce an integrated pen and removable battery design just like that. Who knows, maybe in 5 years it may be different. When phones are just a display at the front, and you have to be different because they all have become the same concerning the design (lg g6 = s8 design, or like all the sharp aquos and the mi mix).
By the way, I use the dr. Ketan rom. Main Reason: With UC Browser (you can use a custom background, like a black picture. Bugless black browsing experience), and the official samsung theme manager, I got a close to complete black UI.

on s8 you can set the navigation bar to be static and black and you will get the same as hardware buttons with the plus of the force touch home button.
nobody used to the hardware button will get any difference in using them.
to understand what i'm saying just give a look at the antutu benchmark ... you will see the black bar.just imagine the black bar with buttons.no difference
you can adjust even the ratio to be 16/9 so...if you want you can get advantages from the infinity display otherwise not
Still its amoled. After half year of using u will have different collors on display on Button spot. But i dont understand why samsung use just only 4gb of ram on latest CPU ... Most of application eat around 700mb and 8gb will be nice to have on flagship.
I using my note 4 as navigation but s8 rly sux with screen ratio + edges for it.
I thinking about upgrade to oneplus 3t but night shots its imported for me alot + battery life where is samgung s7 edge for now best choice.
Even by current standards the Note 4 is still a very good device. Especially if you have the Exynos variant.
If the Note 4 had the S7 Edge Camera, fingerprint scanner and Ip68 resistance, it would be Samsung King.

I bought my N920i off of ebay for $589 shipped over 2 years ago in August 2015... and I still love this phone. I'm two batterys later, prob 6 different glass backs, plus she's never had a case, and has been dropped countless times, yet still chugging along. I keep eyeing up "upgrades", but I still love this screen, this camera, the UI is good, and performance is still good. Kudos to Sammy, I'm having a hell of a time finding a suitable successor
I have had my Note 5 since April 2016 and still love it. Like other people I have looked at upgrading to the note 8 but only looked. I will keep using the 5 until it fails me ( which it has never done). Like the saying goes why fix what isn't broke
I have had my Note5 18.11.2015 and still love it. Last week I changed my battery at rma in warranty time. Now everything is good. Just like 2 years ago

Does this mean that anyone in the market currently to buy a used Note 5 should assume price for a new battery etc also? I'm thinking yes.
I noticed a lot of "refurbished" devices but I doubt they replace the battery ,unless it's a Samsung refurbished unit.
Also how do you folks cope with 32GB only?

The 32 GB is not a big deal imo. I use google photos to back up all of my photos and I periodically delete my photos from my gallery to save space. I have about 2 pages of apps (around 50) and I also have Titanium Backup with all of my apps backed up to my internal storage and same with Spotify premuim music downloaded. I have around 10 GB of space left. I don't see a need for a ton of space unless you are downloading videos/movies for offline use.

I agree the note 5 is a wonderful future proof phone. I have had to replace my phone once because I was working with it in my front pocket and I leaned up against the side of a truck bending down in the bed and I messed up the digitizer on the screen. That was summer 2016. Besides that this phone has done wonders. I will probably keep is until it is very outdated. Now a days, phones only get minor upgrades. Nothing huge! So the Note 5 is a good competetor to the Note 8 imo. And once this slows down, we can always flash stock android to speed it up

We buy the 64gb version lol.
l still have note 5, bought in weak later of selling start.... and.. only what l need to do to replace to normal back cover and l still don`t want to change it.
I´ve had the whole Note-serie from 1-4. Couldn´t get the Note 5 in my country so I tried some other phones like OP3, Axon 7 etc. Two weeks ago I was able to buy a brand new Note 5 64GB N920C from a guy who bought it in Dubai. I really love the phone, it'srunning Android 7.0 directly out of box. Two days ago I also got a firmware uppdate that included 1th November security patch! Somehow I think that Samsung still find this device as their real flagship! Think about it, they started the edge-era of phones, they also started the "panorama.-screens", but what do they really like? I think the Note 5, like me.
I have a note 8 and I still prefer my note 5 in someways. It just feels more premium and honestly I think it takes better photos.
