Hi,
I own a Galaxy S4 i9505.
It's still running the stock ROM, with firmware version: I9505XXUGNG8 (Running 4.4.2)
For a while now, I'm experiencing an issue where once every 2-3 calls - I cannot hear the other side, and the other side is unable to hear me. (No sound at all)
After calling back (doesn't matter which side calls), the sound returns.
This happens consistently every 2-3 calls, and it doesn't help turning on speaker or performing any of the other functions during the call.
Has anyone experienced this issue?
Could this be a hardware issue, or will it be fixed by replacing the ROM?
I've read several occurrences of similar symptoms, but none were exactly as mentioned above.
I'll appreciate any help in the matter!

I have the MyTouch3g rooted with CM 4.0.4 and I am having an issue with my microphone volume. It works fine in calls for a few minutes, but then occasionally drops to being really quiet to where the person on the other end of the call can't hear me. Occasionally it comes back, but usually the other person hangs up, thinking they've lost the call.
Is this a common problem, and is there a software fix for it? I am pretty sure it happened with other versions of CM and my phone was rooted pretty soon after i got it, so i don't know if a stock image has the same issue.
Any help would be appreciated!
Hello everybody,
I'm sorry for opening that topic but i'm desperate now. I saw similar topics for that but i tried every written solution on that topics not working.
Last month i've rooted my i9500 first time and flashed CyanogenMod (4.4.2 Kitkat). There were few bugs on this ROM. For example Camera Problem, Low Mic issue etc.. After i used that ROM 2 days, i decided to change my ROM because of bugs. I changed 4-5 ROMs for i9500. ( Phoenix, CyanogenMod(New Version), MIUI etc... But the low mic issue was still there.
I tried flashing Stock Rom 4.3
Flashing Stock New Rom 4.4
Flashing stock Kernel and stock Radio
Flashing other ROMs...
I tried all of them. All problems gone except low mic issue. First I thought something wrong with my hardware but after that i noticed that the low mic issue is just running on Phone Calls. If i open speaker my voice is perfect but in normal call people barely hear me or don't hear me.
Voice recorder and Video Recording is perfectly record sound. The problem is occur only Phone Call without speaker.
So i need your help, how i can solve this low mic issue ?
Thanks for all.
try downloading AudioManager on play store and see if it helps. It could be a hardware problem you know.
cheers ~
I downloaded AudioManager but nothing changed. I guess the problem is not hardware because if i use speaker on phone calls my voice is perfect. Audio recording and video recording are also perfect.
No solutions ?
please help me about this. i tried everything i've read nothing changed.
You've probably got dirt in your microphone hole, locate it on the bottom of the device and use a dental pick or something to clear the blockage.
Perhaps you're covering the microphone hole when you hold up the phone to your ear?
I tried to clean it nothing changed. I'm holding same as i always do . I tried directly speak to mic hole. Nothing changed
Same Issue please help us
I Have same issues, im sure Hardware is working Fine, mic in low volume if using at phone call and record voice note. but in other apps like Audio Record, and Activate Speaker Phone mic is Working properly, S Voice, etc
I also upgrade my device GT-I9500 JB 4.3 with firmware for Russia I9500XXUFNB3_I9500SERFNB3_I9500XXUFNA6_HOME
After that , start my problem with S4 device and microphone NOT working level is so bad and low .... sound is very poor
If I use speaker option mic working good , also if I use bluetooth headset for communication sound work good , normal .
But have problem if I answering and try talk "normally " by microphone .
Today try with other 4.4.2 firmware like I9500XXUFNB7_I9500OLBFNB4
But unfortunately, there is still the problem with my S4 GT-I9500
My mic work good with JB 4.3 but this problem start when upgrade to 4.4.2
Best ,
Z.
can someone edit this..?
same here~
but can someone test or edit file default_gain.conf maybe it will solve our prob
Thanks
(remove .zip)
same weird problem
i9500. on AOSB KK 4.4.4 1.3v mic works fine on phone calls, whatsapp voice, recorder, etc
but on euphoria rom , some builds mic only works in whatsapp and google nw etc and not on phone calls
frapetis CM12 v19build, mic works sometimes in calls, sometime not, sometimes after dialling crazy screetching noise comes, cannot hear the call then nor they can hear me. after 2-3 call attempts, voice becomes fine, and can call with no troubles. but this sh*T keeps happening.
tried going back to TW(AURORA, STOCK) , still same story, mic not working in calls, but in voice recorder
Some builds mic doesnt work only, anywhere.
anyone any help >_<
considering the fact that voice works with KK and problems are only in 5.0/.1 ROMS. tried different modems for lollipop also, still no use
Hello,
I have a galaxy S4 (canadian version) and have only been having troubles with it within the last couple days. I do develop so I'm not new when it comes to phones but this issue has me at a lose.
Problem:
When I make or receive a phone call there is absolutely no audio on my end, I cannot hear the dial tones or the other person's voice. The only thing I can here is the call connect and disconnect beeps. The person on the other end hears a very loud buzzing/white noise. This noise becomes intermittent slightly when I speak into the problematic device.
It is only when making/receiving a phone call that the audio does not work. All speakers are functioning in all other apps (music player/skype etc.) the mic is also working without a problem when used for other apps.
When the problem first started I was running 4.2.2 firmware. I was making a phone call when the audio cut out unexpectedly having assumed it was a dropped call I made an other attempt but there was no sound at all. I restarted the device and that very briefly fixed the issue. However every time since restarting the phone has done nothing.
WiFi is working fine as well.
Attempts at Solutions:
Restarting the device (with headphone connected and without)
Factory resetting the device (with headphone connected and without)
Flashing updated (and older) stock firmware on to the device
Flashing custom ROMs on to the device
Dialer apps
SoundAbout app
Making calls with headphone connected / speaker phone
All settings have been checked to ensure in call volume has not been disabled
About Device:Currently running: Gummy version M1.02-25-14-NIGHTLY (Please note that when the phone first started messing up I was running stock 4.2.2 and there was no audio during a call between either phone. The Gummy ROM has made some improvement)
Current android version: 4.4.2
Phone Model #: SGH-I337M (Canadian S4)
Baseband version: I337MVLUAMDJ
Any help is appreciated!
Thank-you
I'm having a similar issue with my ATT SGS4. It started happening randomly...the person on the other end hears beeps and I hear nothing. Speaker/headset with mic don't work either. Only thing that works is Bluetooth oddly enough...but as soon as I switch to speaker, it goes back to not working.
A reboot fixes it temporarily, but then it comes back randomly..either right away or later on in the day.
If Bluetooth works fine for voice calls then I would guess that it's a physical hardware issue. Perhaps the ADC / DAC for onboard mic and headset is malfunctioning?
For Bluetooth I would also guess that A to D conversion happens within the Bluetooth chip which seems to be working fine.
It would be nice to see a schematic.
Edit: I found a block diagram of the circuit. and this link https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+S4+Teardown/13947
So it looks like the audio codec goes straight into the modem but the Bluetooth goes through the Snapdragon CPU before going to the modem. Based on this my original assumption seems to be correct and your mic codec is malfunctioning or there is a physical connection problem.
Hope this helps in any way.
Does this explain why a restart fixes the issue though? If it were solely a connection/hardware issue, a restart wouldn't do crap (unless it re-initializes the circuit and then something causes it to go derp again).

Same thing happened to me, the incall audio chip as gone bad. I had to buy a S4 with a cracked screen off craigslist and swap mother boards and the phone works perfectly now.
SOLUTION: Samsung Galaxy S4 I337 no audio sound during phone call.
SOLUTION: Samsung Galaxy S4 I337 no audio sound during phone call.
For me it was a bad SIM Card Reader or Module IF. But it could be a bad SIM card so try a new SIM before doing this repair or at least take it out and in.
My Service Repair Statement said it replaced two things:
Part Number Description
GH59-13279A Unit-SIM SD SOCKET; SGH-I377, 10-0013-0278
GH59-13111A MODULE-IF SUB FPCB(SGH-I337);SGH-I337,10
Called 800-726-7864 told them what the symptoms were and that the support line said it was the SIM Card Reader and they gave me a quote of $70.36 and seemed confident that the phone would be fixed. Sent to Samsung Repair Facility in Texas, total cost $70.36, and was without it for 9 days. It’s been working for 2 weeks now with no problems.
First I took it to an AT&T Service Center and all they really did was try a new SIM Card, next called Samsung Service 888-987-4357 and went thru a series of tests and they said it was a bad SIM card reader and gave me the repair center number.
Symptoms:
No audio / sound during a phone call on either side (caller or receiver)
Call connects everything is working, just no sound.
Sound for all other functions and apps works (music, voice recording, video audio).
You can tell it is going to happen when you make a call and you don’t hear any ringing just a click sound then nothing. If you hear ringing then the call will work.
Rebooting usual works for a call or two. Messing with some settings may get it to work for a period of time. But for me none of any of the other suggested fixes worked except rebooting and turning airplane mode on and off but it only fixed it for awhile.
I have used the phone for 1.5 years and never had a single hardware problem, didn’t have it heavily loaded (RAM or Memory). It just started one day out of the blue and drove me crazy.

i have the same issue no audio in calls and i rehot the audio codec ic wcd9310 and that worked completely
The earpiece on my Galaxy S4 (SPH-L720) does not work, so I cannot hear calls (or any other audio that uses the earpiece). The other person on the call can hear me fine and speakerphone and headphones work. I bought the phone used, so it seems like it would be a hardware problem, except for the fact that I am able to make it work by opening HwModuleTest (dial *#0*#) and pressing the receiver button. This creates a tone through the earpiece and the problem goes away until for a while, only to come back at seemingly random intervals, or when I reboot. All this was happening with the stock firmware (4.4.2).
I then switched to CyanogenMod 11 M12 (4.4.4), because I do not like the stock OS and because I hoped it might solve this problem. Unfortunately, the problem still remains, but I now have no way to mitigate it at all because CyanogenMod does not have HwModuleTest or something similar as far as I know.
I found a few similar problems on the internet, but they were are either unresolved or the solution did not work for me. A common cause was that the phone falsely detected that headphones were plugged in, but I don't think this is the problem because I used the SoundAbout app (as recommended in one case) to force the use of the earpiece and this did not fix the problem.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem or has any ideas of you to solve it. Thanks.I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem or has any ideas of you to solve it. Thanks.
Bump. Does anyone ever heard of this problem before?
During calls, the audio (sometimes me, sometimes the other person, sometimes both) seems to occasionally drop out for a couple of seconds. The call stays connected, just the audio cuts out. This happened on the stock ROM, on a different but stock-based ROM, and is happening now on Slim6. I couldn't find any previous threads with this issue (other call issues, but I didn't see one with this issue). Is this a known issue? Anyone else having this problem? Any way to return US X727 to full stock for warranty, if no fix? (Also couldn't find a return to full stock thread)
