Hey guys, I just got the S6 and overall it is a great phone, but I do have a couple of gripes that can probably be fixed with some advice. I've never owned a device with touchwiz and have always had vanilla android phones or ROMs (It's hard to tell what features are in regular android as compared to ROMs), so I miss a few things. Any advice you could give would be great!
Being able to reply to messages from the notifications
One of the best things about my nexus and OPO was that I could click "Reply" to a text message notification to bring a pop up to reply. Or click "Read" to mark as read. I hate having to go into the messaging app to reply or mark something as read and I also dislike having a pop up show every time I get a message. I'd rather see the notification and decide what to do from there. Is there a way to do that?
The touch screen is amazingly accurate to touch gestures...too much so.
Some times when trying to tap on something, if my finger slides at all, it will register it as a drag rather than a click. I don't know that there is anything that can be done about this, but it is annoying since I have pretty large fingers.
The phone is downright slippery and impossible to hold on to.
I hate using cases with phones, but the glass on the back and the metal on the sides make the phone hard to grip at all. On top of that, the radius of the corners means that my pinky finger has nothing to anchor the phone on it, in contrast to the nexus 5 or OPO that have the more "right angled" corners. I got a case off of Amazon, but I feel like I need some grip stickers to put on the back and side. Doesn't a company sell sticker type protection that provide grip?
Smart Lock doesn't seem to work by location 100%.
This is something that I never had a problem with on Android 5.0.
I understand that I may need to root in order to get some of the features I had before, but I don't quite understand what Knox is.
Before I would unlock my bootloader, load a custom recovery, then load custom ROMs. If I ever had an issue that needed a warranty or traded in my phone, I just loaded the stock ROM and locked the bootloader and everything was great. How does Knox effect my trade in and insurance capability if something breaks?
Lastly, I want to thank everyone for any assistance and acknowledge that a lot of these gripes are very nit-picky (My friend has been making fun of me as I write this)...but I'm pretty OCD about my phone in general.a
Thanks!
You can quick reply from notifications for text messages
The texting issue can be fixed by installing Textra.

The samsung sms app or android sms app? I tried the android one and I didn't see it and now I am using hangouts, which I don't like.
The Samsung one has a.great quick reply. Some cool features too
1. The Samsung stock MMS app has quick reply.
2. Haven't had an issue with this and don't think there's any settings to change it.
3. My girlfriend complained of the same thing, I have a Spigen case that has a transparent back and the sides have a nice grip. I guess it is sort of like a "bumper" but works well. Doesn't seem too slippery now.
4. Can't help you there, never use it.
5. Knox is a security environment developed by Samsung for Android devices. What "hurts" us is the KNOX flag they have implemented. This "flag" when 100% stock with no root / recovery is at 0x0, it gets tripped when writing unofficially signed things to your phone (Custom recovery, CF Root, etc.) thus tripping your KNOX flag and setting it to 0x1. As of now, there is no way to reverse it. Many people have claimed that this voids your warranty (with Samsung) and they will put the blame if anything happens on you tripping that flag. Others have said they have been able to still get warranty through Samsung. If you have JUMP Insurance, this shouldn't be too much of an issue because as of now, T-Mobile doesn't really check if you tripped it (YMMV), can't exactly tell you if the person you get to help you will check.
2. I've noticed this. I want to long click to pull up the menu, but it thinks I'm dragging, and my finger is moving as much as when one holds their finger still...it should be negligible, but s6 takes it for a command.

Hi, everyone. I think this is my first post to the forum, been a member for a while. I got the white EVO and battery life suxed, but I got it fixed now after rooting my device and using SetCPU + other tweaks in the forum.
I guess I should have noticed the issue when I saw BB give me a bent box. Anyways, there is a gap that looks like it is starting to grow, but I haven't confirm this. Take a look at what I talking about. The defect is between the black and white plastic pieces.

{Link broken due to my newbie status}
Yeah it kinda bothers me, has a clicking noise if you squeeze the back, but not always; thought this was normal, lol. Yeah if I run my finger on it it does expand and I can see it moving like a clam with a small mouth. I am just curious if this is going to get bigger or if this is normal. Also, has anyone exchanged a phone for this or similar defects.
Thanks,
Definitely exchange it
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yup, I'd go exchange it, especially since the box was already bent. Though the real issue may be that the Apple device shown in your picture tried to kill your phone while you slept.
I am going to return it tomorrow. How do I un-root it? I did'nt flash it to install custom roms, I just rooted it. Is their a way to un-root it?

shouldn't matter. rooting your phone didn't cause the plastic to separate. I wouldn't even bother honestly.
Hey guys...this is my first post in here, so please go easy on me. So, i have been in love with The nexus 7 since the day it was released. I have seen all kind of videos/reviews and thought that it is a perfect fit for me. But what i'm scared about is the durability of Nexus 7's screen. I have been hovering over Xda and specially in the Nexus 7 forum and found a lot of criticism regarding its screen cracks and poor build quality.
The thing is I live in Bangladesh, where i wont be able to enjoy any warranties or guarantees(actually I will get a one-day replacement warranty and that's it). Also, it is highly likely that i wont find the necessary equipment to fix it myself. I found only a single case cover for the Nexus which is the poetic brand slimline(Is that any good ? ). Nexus 7 16Gb version costs around $320 here
All this makes me doubt to purchase the awesome gadget and rather settle for the sub-standard Galaxy tab 2 7.0 3G which costs around the same.
But then again...i feel like I wont be able to happily enjoy any other set as i have been in love with Nexus 7 for the last 6 months. So, as u guys can seen that i'm real in pickle. So any advice will go a long way for me. Is Nexus 7 really worth the risk ?
Thanks.
Just don't drop it, any screen can crack that way. Also get a screen protector, the glass does scratch relatively easy.
Fun story. I got an 8gb nexus from the first batch that were made. But I don't currently live in the US, so I ran a huge gamble by ordering one and having my family send it out to me in Asia. Worked *perfectly* until I went back to the US for Thanksgiving. Then, somehow, I blew out the speaker. I was able to get in touch with Google and get it swapped out in under a week, returned to Asia with my new 8GB (no magic upgrade, drat) and we've been happy ever since.
I don't think it's really any risk. The majority who complain about the nexus are a minority of the owners.
Also keep in mind you will hear more horror stories from pissed off owners than stories of folks reporting zero issues

Well that is true and reassuring.
I'd say go for it. As for screen cracking for "no reason", I always wonder just how much truth there is to those stories. I've been perfectly happy with my nexus 7, and it has none of the "so common" problems.

My friend got his 16gig N7 the day it came out and has had zero hardware issues with it. Gotta give credit to magiconthetire as well, he hit the nail on the head. When things go wrong it's the end of the world. But when things go right, you won't even know anything is happening at all.
Also I picked up the Poetic Slim case you mentioned and I really like it. The only draw back is how close the case comes to the bezel on the edges of the screen; if you have big hands or don't hit the bottom navigation bar or top notification bar at the right angle...the case sort of gets in the way. My solution to that is using a stylus for more accurate precision. The stylus also makes typing significantly easier, especially if you use gesture typing such as Swype, SwiftKey Flow, etc.
OP if you know someone you trust in Europe, USA, or even Australia. Get them to buy the tablet for you and ship it out to you. Even with shipping it will be a lot less than $320, if it breaks for something that is under warranty send it back to them and they can return it for repairs.
Cheers Danny

I've only had mine for a couple of weeks and so far no issues here. This is under pretty heavy use as well, as I take my Nexus 7 with me everywhere that I go. The case works really well though, it has a snug fit on the N7 so it doesn't move around inside of it at all, the smart cover that turns the screen on when you open the flap back has worked flawlessly, the hand strap for the back is really nice for using it in portrait mode while laying in bed or for just holding it up during prolonged periods, and the landscape stand is a little tricky to figure out at fist...but works just fine once you figure it out. I'd recommend some kind of sound toggle app for your notification bar as well, because the case does make it a bit of a pain to reach the physical buttons. But that's not really Poetic's fault, the way the buttons angle down with the curve of the backside of the tablet makes them kind of annoying for any case that doesn't have the same slope on it.
As far as stylus' go, I heard good things about this one and it was still fairly cheap...I just got it in the mail a couple of days ago but so far, so good:

The thing is i need to wait for 3-4 months to receive any accessories for the nexus 7. So, meanwhile i need to live with the poetic brand as its the only one around.

I have dropped mine a few times from different heights on different surfaces and its fine. But if you drop it right it will probably shatter, just get a case. Something like this if you are really clumsy.

Asus have international warranty for it.
Beamed from my Maguro.
If you ever want to buy a case throughout the internet I'd be more than happy to help a fellow owner out and re-ship to you!
I don't want to persuade you not to get one because I love the n7 and think everyone should have one, but i just broke my second one. My daughter dropped the first one and the corner of the screen shattered. I didn't have insurance because I've never dropped or lost a phone or laptop or anything, so it cost full price to replace it.
I had the second one in my back pocket, bent down, and screwed up the screen. My pants aren't tight but my butt put a little bit of leverage on the middle of the screen and broke it. When I turned it on later, the screen has a discolored line through it and a pattern of random lines on each side and no normal picture. The screen glass didn't crack, but the screen internals must have. I paid $50 for insurance so I hope it will be replaced with no hassle.
Long story short, I'll never use an n7 without a protective case again, and I've never used a case on any device.
Thanks a lot guys....I have taken all the advice into consideration and have found a satisfying solution. Gonna wait three months and buy through a friend in US.

I just have some questions that I'd like to get answered. Didn't really want to make different threads for each questions so I'll just put any questions I have here. Thanks in advance!
1. I currently have a ls980 running justinswidebody's T-Mobile rom. I was wondering if there was a way to flash a new rom but keep all my apps and accounts. Every time I switch between the tmo rom and the stock rom the apps I had on the tmo rom disappear. Is there a way for the apps to just stay regardless of what rom I flash?
2. I bought my g2 used off eBay and the seller describe as mint condition. When the phone arrived the screen had two scratches and the back had some weird scuffs. Couldn't return it because he stated no returns on the sale page and I don't feel like going through PayPal to get my money back. One scratch is rather deep though thankfully it is that long. The deep scratch is part of a longer shallower scratch. The deep part is deep enough the the colors get distorted when looking directing at the scratch. Sometimes I can even see the scratch when the screen is on! So my question is, is there anything that I can do to get rid of the scratches? Maybe something to fill in the scratches? Will a glass screen protector hide these scratches?
3. I love the feel of the naked g2's screen, but can't bare to have it damaged further. What are some good screen protectors that I should use? What do people rash on the feel of zagg Sp's? Are zaggs as bad as some say? I'm trying to keep the screen protector to around $10. Are skinomi Sp's good?
4. Are there any free or cheap (less than $2) apps or roms that allow autohide for the nav bar? I'm currently using auto hide soft keys, but I have to pay around $4 to access some of the better options. Also not a huge fan of having a trigger that brings the nag bar up. Would love to be able to just swipe up and have the nav bar come up.
5. What options do buying the $.99 package for the g2 closed app give me? Is it worth it?
6. My g2 also has a bad ESN so I won't be able to use it on any domestic carrier so I was going to use text plus and karma WiFi as my new 'carrier'. Are there any downsides to using a free call and text app as my primary phone?
If I get anymore questions I'll add them here. Thanks for reading!

Hello
I got a new Galaxy s5, an update i was pretty happy with considering the last phone i had was a galaxy s2. I got relatively cheap, too (200 euros). Though, after i began using it more, i noticed that the display above where the keyboard should be is a bit dimmer than the keyboard section, and in white screens you can easily see permanent marks of the keyboard keys. Why are these pixels engraved in my screen? IS there a way to fix it without having to buy a new display? I was thinking about doing a dead pixel fix using an app/video, but i didn't want to cause anymore damage without some research first.

That's probably the reason you brought it at that price, no?
Same old amoled problems, different device......I came from an S2 as well, I read ebooks a lot on that phone, and by the time I retired it, I'd SERIOUSLY burnt the screen in exactly the same places that the ebook text was displayed......I've tried various screen burn in apps, and none of them has made the slightest bit of difference.......

Oh well, I guess i'll just have to get used it, no matter how distracting and annoying it is.
I'm guessing you're not currently using a 3rd party keyboard or screen filter? Best check there isn't one installed if it wasn't bought new.
A screen filter app may be able to either cause or even help a bit with problem however, depending on what exactly is wrong with it. There are some that affect the whole screen while others (technically it's a bug) do not affect the keyboard.

I factory reset the phone right after I bought it.
Anyone know how to get that on this phone? Didn't realize it wasnt part of the OS... Been on a pixel and didn't realize it was specific to that phone...
You would need to put it in a ROM (if/when available from the XDA community) or use an app. I miss the feature too but was expecting it as the Pixel was as close as you could get to stock Android minus a few of Google's "extra" touches. lol There is always a possibility that Essential will add it themselves... fingers crossed. lol
Personally I've had no luck with apps in the past so I'll leave that one up to you.
If it helps at all there is a lift to view notifications that is a halfway that is baked into stock android. It's located in the Settings > Display > Gestures > Lift to check phone

Thanks, I don't care for lift to view tho, and yes I knew roms could have it, we need a few more things to be released I believe for that to happen tho...
Was hoping there was an app... Didn't realize that that was one of the "extras" that Google put in there...
You can also press the power button once to wake to see notifications without having to lift the phone.

Just got done reading the Reddit posting with the essential team and Andy Rubin a few minutes ago. While I can't link the exact post one of the Essential team members pointed out they are looking into things like the double tap to wake gesture. They didn't say they were going to do it but it seemed like they were insinuating that we should "keep our eyes out"... Hopefully they do and we can get our missed features back!
They seemed pretty responsive on that AMA, I do hope we get this and other subtle features.

Double tap to wake needs to be baked into a rom; no app is going to be able to provide that -- especially if the phone isn't root.
And this feature certainly isn't a Pixel exclusive. I've had double tap to wake on my 1+1. And it's bake into my LG X Charge. Frankly, I do admit that I was shocked to fine out the PH1 didn't support double take to wake. That's fracking completely idiotic. Essential bombed in so many areas where it missed 'essential' features of any modern flagship smart phone.
Really hope this feature is baked into future updates from Essential.
I think all LG's have this now. Really missing it!
Yeah, I had double tap to wake on my HTC One M8 years ago. And ended up disabling it because of pocket wakes in my pants (I put the screen side facing my leg in my right front pocket). Skin is skin, and a thin cotton pocket liner still allows conductivity to the screen from your leg.
The problem was even worse because I don't like lock screens, when I wake my device I want it to be ready, not yet another swipe. So when it woke in my pocket, as it went on bumping against my leg, all kinds of crap happened, from pocket dialing to taking pictures of my junk (with flash!) to ordering a purse on Amazon.
