Just some questions - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just have some questions that I'd like to get answered. Didn't really want to make different threads for each questions so I'll just put any questions I have here. Thanks in advance!
1. I currently have a ls980 running justinswidebody's T-Mobile rom. I was wondering if there was a way to flash a new rom but keep all my apps and accounts. Every time I switch between the tmo rom and the stock rom the apps I had on the tmo rom disappear. Is there a way for the apps to just stay regardless of what rom I flash?
2. I bought my g2 used off eBay and the seller describe as mint condition. When the phone arrived the screen had two scratches and the back had some weird scuffs. Couldn't return it because he stated no returns on the sale page and I don't feel like going through PayPal to get my money back. One scratch is rather deep though thankfully it is that long. The deep scratch is part of a longer shallower scratch. The deep part is deep enough the the colors get distorted when looking directing at the scratch. Sometimes I can even see the scratch when the screen is on! So my question is, is there anything that I can do to get rid of the scratches? Maybe something to fill in the scratches? Will a glass screen protector hide these scratches?
3. I love the feel of the naked g2's screen, but can't bare to have it damaged further. What are some good screen protectors that I should use? What do people rash on the feel of zagg Sp's? Are zaggs as bad as some say? I'm trying to keep the screen protector to around $10. Are skinomi Sp's good?
4. Are there any free or cheap (less than $2) apps or roms that allow autohide for the nav bar? I'm currently using auto hide soft keys, but I have to pay around $4 to access some of the better options. Also not a huge fan of having a trigger that brings the nag bar up. Would love to be able to just swipe up and have the nav bar come up.
5. What options do buying the $.99 package for the g2 closed app give me? Is it worth it?
6. My g2 also has a bad ESN so I won't be able to use it on any domestic carrier so I was going to use text plus and karma WiFi as my new 'carrier'. Are there any downsides to using a free call and text app as my primary phone?
If I get anymore questions I'll add them here. Thanks for reading!

Should I exchange my white EVO due to plastic defect?

Hi, everyone. I think this is my first post to the forum, been a member for a while. I got the white EVO and battery life suxed, but I got it fixed now after rooting my device and using SetCPU + other tweaks in the forum.
I guess I should have noticed the issue when I saw BB give me a bent box. Anyways, there is a gap that looks like it is starting to grow, but I haven't confirm this. Take a look at what I talking about. The defect is between the black and white plastic pieces.

{Link broken due to my newbie status}
Yeah it kinda bothers me, has a clicking noise if you squeeze the back, but not always; thought this was normal, lol. Yeah if I run my finger on it it does expand and I can see it moving like a clam with a small mouth. I am just curious if this is going to get bigger or if this is normal. Also, has anyone exchanged a phone for this or similar defects.
Thanks,
Definitely exchange it
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yup, I'd go exchange it, especially since the box was already bent. Though the real issue may be that the Apple device shown in your picture tried to kill your phone while you slept.
I am going to return it tomorrow. How do I un-root it? I did'nt flash it to install custom roms, I just rooted it. Is their a way to un-root it?

shouldn't matter. rooting your phone didn't cause the plastic to separate. I wouldn't even bother honestly.

Just got my Epic :) Now what?

Ok, Just got my epic in the mail. It's charging as I type. I ordered a Realook screen protector immediately and I'll probably keep the one that ships with it on there until that one comes in.
So my question is...What should I do first? I want to customize it as much as possible to keep the battery life as long as possible. Should I root it? What roms do you guys recommend? I'm waiting on a case with a kickstand to come out...so i'll baby it for the first month I guess.
Definitely Root it!!! So many benfits with rooting (Free Wifi Tether,No ADS, Custom roms, Kernals, Get rid of crapware like sprint stuff and more.
Im running andromeda rom with andomeda kernal. I couldnt be happier.
This might be a silly question but if I root it before I activate it will that affect the activation process?
The reason I ask is because I don't have a screen protector yet so I was just going to continue using my other phone until it came in. I know its ridiculous, but I just want to make sure I don't give myself any opportunity to scratch the screen on this expensive phone.
So I'll just play with it until I can actually start making phone calls. Hilarious...adults with their toys.
Just realize the epic uses Gorilla glass.. Unless you continually drop stuff and try hard to scratch the screen your not going to be able to.

Do you happen to have a respectable source on that one? I have heard that it does, it doesn't, it might and really would just like to know for certain.
Thanks
search for gorilla glass on youtube.
1st?? Why not make sure the phone works as advertised? My suggestion is to check how the well your GPS and other features actually work. Once you get a good feel for the phone, then the rooting should start...

I am so accustomed to rooting, modding, or putting a rom on every smart phone I have ever had that it only seems natural to start that way from the get go. Besides, I'm fairly confidant that stock performance is going to pale in comparison to what I'll see once I've customized it a bit.
But, you are right I'll give it a go stock for a little bit (a day ?) to get a feel for the device before I start slicing and dicing it.

It states plainly that the Galaxy S has gorilla glass, so I think we can safely say that the Epic has it since the Galaxy S is AKA the Epic.

So, I understand that Gorilla glass is supposed to make this thing nearly indestructible, but I've read around these very forums that people are still getting scratches on the screen. Might as well protect my expensive overpriced phone....Sometimes I think who the heck cares since I have insurance and why bother with a case either?

Getting this cheapo ebay case for the time being until they release a functional case with a kickstand that I like. I read a review on this site here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797833 that gave me some hope in buying the triangular shape case. *Crosses Thumbs* Hoping it will hold me over.
I scratched my screen within a week of getting the phone. I customarily leave my keys in the same pocket as my phone. I did this for 2 years w/ an iphone and didn't have a single scratch so i figured the epic would fare similarly. 1 week and there were little micro scratches all over the epics screen. I had other problems with that phone so sprint exchanged it for another one and i promptly got a screen protector. Hopefully i'm the exception and not the rule.

I do the exact same thing...I constantly put my phone in my pocket with my car keys. I notice every little scratch...they gnaw at my subconscious even when i'm not using the phone lol. I thought the Iphone and epic both had gorilla glass...odd that you would scratch one and not the other under similar circumstances.
If times get desperate, you could always trade it for crack...

Sorry man, it's the truth. I'm not flaming the phone or anything, and i'm pretty sure my experience is a rare one. But yes. I'm a fool who keeps his keys in the same pocket as his phone. Miraculously there were no scratches on the iphone3g after about 1.75 years. In case you think i'm somehow trolling the epic you need to realize i disliked everything else about the iphone and even paid the early termination fee to switch to the epic. BTW beside that one negative experience w/ the scratch and wobbly screen (the same unit) i love this phone.
So back on topic. I recommend a screen protector of some sort.

You know I've waited this long for this phone...I think I can hold out another few days before my screen protector comes in.
I'm probably going to root it today...I'll ask again does anyone know if rooting will hinder activating this phone?
Otherwise, I'm just using it as a PMP for now .
Rooting won't hinder activation, however using an aosp rom might. So if u just root and use noobs rom or just leave it stock rom u will be fine.

Thanks! I might just wait then to activate it first before rooting because the main reason I wanted to root is to install a custom kernal/rom.
Battery life sucks on stock so far by the way...I'm getting about 7 hours a day with light usuage before I have to recharge. Admittedly, I have not done much to tweak it, but its a shame that a stock offering from sprint can't hold a whole days charge. I mean what if I wasn't as inclined to rooting/tweaking...I would have to live with the phone like this? Definitely, unacceptable. If I don't see at least a days charge with some light usage on a custom rom/kernal I might consider waiting for another droid phone with a better battery life. I have read some positive results from people with custom roms achieving the battery life I'm looking for so I'm hopeful.

What to check on a 2nd hand Nexus S

Hey guys, I'm about to buy a 2nd hand Nexus S from some guy on a local forum and we're going to do the exchange in person. What should I check on the phone before I give him the $$? Any common glitches common to this phone?
For example, I was using the Nexus One before this one, and I know the multitouch screen is wonky for some of the AMOLED models for that one, and the trackball gets dirt in it. Anything like that for the NS? Thanks guys!

I would say one of the most important things would to make sure the volume rocker and the power button feel solid. This is the most heard of problem in the nexus s forums. We haven't really experienced problems like burn in but you can check for that by running a full screen app like a game at max brightness.
Good point, the volume rocker on my N1 was starting to act up with age too.

Speak for yourself on that one. The buttons at the bottom got burned into mine from having the display stay on while charging.
burn on screen dont matter if u can see buttons at bottom for search back home ect as there used alot and are off the main screen and volume and power buttons even tho mine are still like new after 2 years if they have gone than there may be more problems elsewhere always play music and volume brightest to see if anything wrong with screen and sound i would play a game
Make sure the signal works. That would be a sign of a stolen phone. Apart from that its the usual of checking scratches, any big dents, making sure the buttons are working ok
My screen is still as nice as when I bought it, but the entire thing is covered in ghost armor. Hate the glossy fat bezel and though. Even cased it shows tiny less shiny scuffs on it though its never been dropped or in anything but silicone and tpu. 99% of people wouldn't even be able to see it, but I'm anal. I went through 8 phones to find a good screen and no glass crease. Foolish when I ended up getting a galaxy nexus just 13 months after paying full price for it from best buy. Buttons all work too after 4+ hours a day of use.

Make sure to check for touch sensitivity across the middle and bottom of the screen. I bought a second hand nexus s and didn't recognize the problem until it was too late.
The middle of the screen on my nexus s pretty much doesn't work sometime and starts working after I turn the screen off then on again.
Hope this helps.

1: buttons work
2: call *2 or whatever the cellular company's number is (Sprint will happily verify an ESN if you are buying used)
3: screen
4: is it rooted? (I would rather root myself, so I know it is done right, If I buy used, I buy stock)
5: GPS Signal
Verify SIM connector pins are important too.
Closed, thread here talking about the same issue.
In future search before posting.
Thank you.

Is it worth the risk ?

Hey guys...this is my first post in here, so please go easy on me. So, i have been in love with The nexus 7 since the day it was released. I have seen all kind of videos/reviews and thought that it is a perfect fit for me. But what i'm scared about is the durability of Nexus 7's screen. I have been hovering over Xda and specially in the Nexus 7 forum and found a lot of criticism regarding its screen cracks and poor build quality.
The thing is I live in Bangladesh, where i wont be able to enjoy any warranties or guarantees(actually I will get a one-day replacement warranty and that's it). Also, it is highly likely that i wont find the necessary equipment to fix it myself. I found only a single case cover for the Nexus which is the poetic brand slimline(Is that any good ? ). Nexus 7 16Gb version costs around $320 here
All this makes me doubt to purchase the awesome gadget and rather settle for the sub-standard Galaxy tab 2 7.0 3G which costs around the same.
But then again...i feel like I wont be able to happily enjoy any other set as i have been in love with Nexus 7 for the last 6 months. So, as u guys can seen that i'm real in pickle. So any advice will go a long way for me. Is Nexus 7 really worth the risk ?
Thanks.
Just don't drop it, any screen can crack that way. Also get a screen protector, the glass does scratch relatively easy.
Fun story. I got an 8gb nexus from the first batch that were made. But I don't currently live in the US, so I ran a huge gamble by ordering one and having my family send it out to me in Asia. Worked *perfectly* until I went back to the US for Thanksgiving. Then, somehow, I blew out the speaker. I was able to get in touch with Google and get it swapped out in under a week, returned to Asia with my new 8GB (no magic upgrade, drat) and we've been happy ever since.
I don't think it's really any risk. The majority who complain about the nexus are a minority of the owners.
Also keep in mind you will hear more horror stories from pissed off owners than stories of folks reporting zero issues

Well that is true and reassuring.
I'd say go for it. As for screen cracking for "no reason", I always wonder just how much truth there is to those stories. I've been perfectly happy with my nexus 7, and it has none of the "so common" problems.

My friend got his 16gig N7 the day it came out and has had zero hardware issues with it. Gotta give credit to magiconthetire as well, he hit the nail on the head. When things go wrong it's the end of the world. But when things go right, you won't even know anything is happening at all.
Also I picked up the Poetic Slim case you mentioned and I really like it. The only draw back is how close the case comes to the bezel on the edges of the screen; if you have big hands or don't hit the bottom navigation bar or top notification bar at the right angle...the case sort of gets in the way. My solution to that is using a stylus for more accurate precision. The stylus also makes typing significantly easier, especially if you use gesture typing such as Swype, SwiftKey Flow, etc.
OP if you know someone you trust in Europe, USA, or even Australia. Get them to buy the tablet for you and ship it out to you. Even with shipping it will be a lot less than $320, if it breaks for something that is under warranty send it back to them and they can return it for repairs.
Cheers Danny

I've only had mine for a couple of weeks and so far no issues here. This is under pretty heavy use as well, as I take my Nexus 7 with me everywhere that I go. The case works really well though, it has a snug fit on the N7 so it doesn't move around inside of it at all, the smart cover that turns the screen on when you open the flap back has worked flawlessly, the hand strap for the back is really nice for using it in portrait mode while laying in bed or for just holding it up during prolonged periods, and the landscape stand is a little tricky to figure out at fist...but works just fine once you figure it out. I'd recommend some kind of sound toggle app for your notification bar as well, because the case does make it a bit of a pain to reach the physical buttons. But that's not really Poetic's fault, the way the buttons angle down with the curve of the backside of the tablet makes them kind of annoying for any case that doesn't have the same slope on it.
As far as stylus' go, I heard good things about this one and it was still fairly cheap...I just got it in the mail a couple of days ago but so far, so good:

I have dropped mine a few times from different heights on different surfaces and its fine. But if you drop it right it will probably shatter, just get a case. Something like this if you are really clumsy.

Asus have international warranty for it.
Beamed from my Maguro.
If you ever want to buy a case throughout the internet I'd be more than happy to help a fellow owner out and re-ship to you!
I don't want to persuade you not to get one because I love the n7 and think everyone should have one, but i just broke my second one. My daughter dropped the first one and the corner of the screen shattered. I didn't have insurance because I've never dropped or lost a phone or laptop or anything, so it cost full price to replace it.
I had the second one in my back pocket, bent down, and screwed up the screen. My pants aren't tight but my butt put a little bit of leverage on the middle of the screen and broke it. When I turned it on later, the screen has a discolored line through it and a pattern of random lines on each side and no normal picture. The screen glass didn't crack, but the screen internals must have. I paid $50 for insurance so I hope it will be replaced with no hassle.
Long story short, I'll never use an n7 without a protective case again, and I've never used a case on any device.
Thanks a lot guys....I have taken all the advice into consideration and have found a satisfying solution. Gonna wait three months and buy through a friend in US.
Edit : How can I close the thread ?

Get a screen protector, there're some promotion in the Accessories area. If you hurry, you can get some good deals.
If you're gonna apply a wet screen protector, use tape or carefully cover the holes, especially the earpiece and microphones.
It's time to decide you're gonna stick with Stock or Custom ROm or Kernel.
If you'll carry your phone with you all the time and you are a careless guy, buy some good case (i am using this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38564883, quite expensive, but worth the money). There are also so many other effective case that you can see reviews in Accessories area.
Need for apps? There is a Thread in Apps and Theme area named Must Have Apps for Nexus 4. That's helpful (some free, some not)
If you're gonna root or use custom ROM. Read the Restock thread first, so in case anything goes wrong, you know what to do. I recommend you do everything manually first before you use the toolkits. THat's really help you. when you know what you're doing, then toolkits are the best choices.
End :good: HAve fun dude.

I use a pouch and a dbrand skin on the back and use it naked. No marks or anything as of yet. But plenty of cases out there like bumpers, and such.

I have applied more than 20 times and my phone still works now. If you are still worrying, when you apply the wet protector, use tape to cover microphones, earpiece, charge port.

I think some forumers have put their names down for this: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1081571316/rhino-shield-the-impact-resistant-screen-protector
It's an impact resistant screen protector.
