The Impact of Encryption - Galaxy S6 General

So after having a Nexus 6 and rather liking the perceived security benefits of Encryption and seeing how it all but killed the useability of the device I wanted to know what the impact is of Encryption on the S6.
Now as we know Google backed down from requiring encryption on Lollipop devices. However, with my limited findings Samsung didn't have a thing to worry about.
I ran AndroBench 2 runs back to back on a clean boot with no background applications. I am posting up the fastest of each round. (The two runs were back and forth but within 3mb of each other or so)
Stock S6 64GB - 38GB free currently. The process took about 20 minutes on a full charge.

Not bad at all! Looks like I will turn this on when I get mine... I will run the same tests. I ordered the 128GB and I am no expert but don't expect it to be much different than your scores. Am I reading some of that wrong... looks like some of the tests improved?
edit: I got the edge but will still report out.

Yeah I did a bunch more tests and all of them varied slightly, some faster some slower but not by much. Between them all I'd say the results equal out before and after.

I couldnt disagree more. The lag was more related to android 5.0 vs 5.1. 5.1 with encryption vs de-encryption has no noticeable difference (and I think most people agree with me). You might see different numbers in synthetic benchmarks but real world=no difference.

The Browser speed has seemed to have halved once it was encrypted.
That seems like a BIG HIT, and a deterrent to most users.
The other applications seem to have slight delays too, but I think the Browser speed is probably the most important factor right there. I mean, it is used the most often.
I'm not sure why Google backed down from their decision, I commend Apple's stance.
Perhaps Google saw the delays and didn't want to demonstrate lag or something?

not bad !:fingers-crossed:

Nexus 6 is a disaster.

Oh cool! Another thing to waste the battery which is already poor!

I got the best longevity yesterday after encrypting it since I have had the phone. Now if you are doing a ton of RW with big files or a lot of little ones it could have an impact, but for the normal Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram it worked out perfectly.
I can honestly say there is no discernible impact to battery life.

I have to encrypt my phone for work and the htc one m8 would take a huge hit however the sgs6 so far has been great and no hick ups like i used to get with the m8.

Out of curiosity.. Those that encrypt notice a major decrease in download speeds for 4G LTE and wifi? Also, after encrypting does your wifi hotspot for tethering still work?

So just to clarify this "encryption" your talking about is the Settings > Security > Encrypt Device? And that makes things run FASTER?

There is no reason things are running faster when encrypted. What people are stating here just means that there is no performance decrease after encryption. The slightly faster results might just be random. Some parts are faster some parts are slower. But in general it seems the speed seems to be nearly equal encrypted or not.

The Exynos is ARMv8 & should have the feature set for hardware accelerated encryption (ex. AES) unlike v7 CPUs. You can keep it active without a major hit to I/O performance, so you won't have the same experience as the Nexus 6. One thing that may be of interest is whether encryption affects battery because most users probably don't need encryption...

Hi there,
I own a Samsung Galaxy S6 32GB and had to turn on the device encryption due to security policies of the company I work for to get access to my MS Exchange mails.
After turning on the encryption I had the feeling that the battery life got worse.
To prove if this is right or wrong I started the decryption yestrerday. Now it is almost 24h ago and the decryption still is running.
I am not sure if the device is really still decrypting or if the device is having problems.
Has anyone experience how long the decryption takes to finish? I would like to restart the device but I do not want to lose any data...
Can anyone help?
Greetings,
Jan

Of its been decrypting for 24 hours is stuck and you have to reset it. This will make you factories reset, so you will lose your data.

I had a similar problem where my device was not getting to decryption, but getting stuck on the initial "Decrypting" screen.
I solved it by changing my screen lock method to password (i was using fingerprint) and then running the decryption option. This made the difference and the device decrypted on my next attempt.

Anyone notices decreased performance when using the broser?

you're not alone.. sigh :/ And I'm really happy we're finally getting it but it's a bit too late for me as I'm moving on to the S6 Edge, hopefully it gets rooted or I'll end up returning it and just going back to a Note developer edition perhaps

And did we rely just get 4.4 root and lollipop in the same day? Figures. Lol.
Edit: I uploaded them in reverse order.. Sorry guys
Of course this happens as we are about to get root lol. Looks like I might hold off on the update for a couple days.
Seriously as soon as I get hyped about root coming this week (possibly) now I have to decide if I want to wait around to see how long it takes for lolipop to get rooted.

If his claims regarding root are accurate, he says it supports lollipop as well. Meaning that this would have to be, essentially, a 0 day exploit or leverage the USB connection dealio that got moto/LG root.
easy decision for me... I'll take root first.
Wonderful. Lollipop and root announced the same day!
Nothing in North Carolina yet.
Still nothing here in North Carolina
ugh...nothing in nj yet but do i update when i can or wait for a custom lollipop rom =/
i really do lead a tough life
Anybody able to confirm if the new Theme Engine for TWiz is included in this like it will be on the S6?
The biggest things that made me return my Note 4 were my inability to handle how ugly I found the notifications and color scheming and the bloat. If we have root (soon it sounds) and theming...I may jump back in.
Perhaps a point that the Note 4 is already great, I do not see the point in the update. My Note 4 already has good signal reception, great battery life and performance. These are knowns. The unknown is updating to Lollipop and how it behaves in regards to the things already working fine. The one known is the ART file system will result in about 3GB less overall storage space. $crew that. JMO, so hope everybody that updates is happy. Losing the storage space alone would make me not happy. Need a 64GB device with micro sd before I bother with the ART file system.

I think you will be pleased with lollipop especially when root drops so it can be debloated. I've been running beanstalk based off 5.0.1 on my N4 dev-edition and it's much faster than 4.4.4. ART works great. I know TW is entirely different than CM12 but I'm sure the performance will be similar. As for extra space you are not going to get any extra useable space for file storage from removing system apps. The partition size for system will remain the same no matter how many apps are removed. Your storage space and system space are two different partitions. When 5.0 drops then development can finally pick up and will be a win for everyone.

I have been with Android since the G1 and have modded up until the Note 4. Note 4 works great already, so have no desire to bother modding the Note 4. I used to be compelled to root/mod due to performance issues. I am not at all compelled with the Note 4, since already works great. Will also pass on the update as a result

ART is a runtime, not a file system. yaffs2, vfat, ntfs: these are file systems.
ART replaces the Dalvik VM that the platform runs applications on. Your file system handles reading/writing data to and from storage devices.
That being said, ART is much smoother than Dalvik's JIT compiling, so it's all a matter of preference. If you want a choppy, outdated device with hard drive space, go ahead! I have plenty of cloud storage, so performance is key to me.

You're misunderstanding his point. ART uses more storage space because it saves the compiled package from the apk on the NAND, and that is bigger than the apk. I don't know where he got the 3gb figure from, but ART will always take up more space than the same phone/software with DALVIK as the runtime.
Not up for me yet

You're probably missing out on some pretty important security updates too, but whatever floats your boat. This thread is probably not the place for you.
I'm seriously looking foreward to lollipop on my note 4. My note felt much faster than my old nexus 7 2013 tablet, until it got lollipop. ..after it got that, I stared using the tablet more often at home, because it out performed my note 4, which was only a month or so old!
I'm expecting to see the same performance gain on my note 4 once we get lollipop.
I'll root, but only so I can finally install an ad blocker. As far as storage space, I've got a 32gb sd card, and I can always replace that with up to a128gb sd card. I couldn't care much at all about losing a little space in the phone itself, and lollipop with fix the external app sd card access, making the SD card much more functional.

Free Memory in Marshmallow

Hi guys i have just sideloaded OTA to my nexus 9. It seems to consume quite a lot of memory. when i first booted it was using 1.7-1.8gb.
I closed all the apps by swiping on the task switcher and got to 1.5gb as below
Could anyone who have been recently clean flashed tell me how much memory their device is using?
Cheers

That seems to be the norm based on my experience, even back on the previews.
I don't think there's much we can do. I uninstalled Facebook as it was the main culprit, but other apps just picked up the slack.
Google was dead wrong not giving this device 3 GB for the price we paid.

Really, really disappointed from day 1, worst battery life, insufficient ram, laggy here and there, memory leaks and redraws, black smudges on white screen while scrolling, this is my second replacement, and Android 6.0 which I had I hopes for fixing the nexus 9 is even worse, I just moved back to lollipop the new build lmy48t.
I'm selling my nexus 9, I love nexus and their products, I own a nexus 5 and nexus 7, they both get more battery than the nexus 9, they are faster than the nexus 9, nor have I had a bad experiences with them, they both have 2gb ram and can open crazy tons of apps without redraws or any lock ups, $610 AU dollars in the trash, buying either a new nexus 7 2013 or a Samsung tab s2. Don't say oh factory reset, bro I've tried all ROMs, ive done 1000s of factory resets and this crap ain't working with me, the only thing the nexus 9 hasn't let me down is gaming that's IT!!!, BESIDES ITS A BLOODY HEATER, 80 DEGRESS Celsius, I'll probably use this as a heater in winter.
You guys do know that's average use
Also even closing all the apps it will stay high because it's average over time
To get to the real one.
Go to developer options
Then to running services

Used memory is a GOOD thing as long as it is releasing it when a new app requests it. Why have RAM sitting around unused when it can be used for helping the OS/apps run faster?

The ram usage is for a base system, the absolute minimum for the Google software stack to run. There is basically no more ram left for any other applications without paging out essential processes. Hence the home screen redraws, background media being killed, redraws on tab switching in chrome, lag on application start up. 2gb is simply not enough for a 64bit android environment.
I have 1.3GB Used, 21 in memory in the last 3hrs. No problems so far. I also have HW rendering turned on not software, that may help some too.
Here is another data point. Been running 6 for about 5 days, no problems at all. Bone stock, unrooted/unlocked.
Mine too guys. Clean installation and always 1.5-1.6 ram used in idle. Hopefully in the future this will change.
Best advice I can give... Use Fire-Ice kernel.
Use zram at about 200mb. And activate KSM.
KSM will save you at least 300mb (it did for me), while zram will make sure that you still have a bit of extra RAM for ram intensive apps, like chrome.
Update:
I'm currently sitting at 1.3GB and I have not closed any of my extra applications.
Between Android OS, System UI, Android System and Launcher3 I'm using 1026MB.
This is not that bad
If you have background apps which are consuming a lot of memory even though you're not using them.
Use greenify to keep them closed, this will keep memory free for apps you actually use.
This managed to keep me afloat when it was still on Lollipop with its damned memory leaks. Im pretty sure it can handle MM.

Does nobody think that the differing experiences are not due to hardware/Marshmallow but to errors in the coding of apps used? Google has extensive documentation on app coding and memory performance diagnostics - start here http://developer.android.com/training/articles/memory.html

Read my previous post. It will help you quite a lot.
For MM most people are recommending to use a custom ROM and Kernel.
It's the same on mine. Everything works great except multitasking. It's impossible to multitask like on phones (or video reviews of Nexus 9!).
The worst is Chrome - only one tab can stay loaded, if I have two or three or more it has to reload them every time I switch a tab.
- Yesterday I clered cache and data - it works better now (usually Google's apps like gmail and drive stay loaded - Chrome still has the same problems).

I think I have to return my S7 Edge...

I took the jump to Android from Windows Phone and I really liked the S7 Edge form factor and looks however it is just too buggy and has hardware problems so I think I might have to try an iPhone (scary). Here are my list of problems with the S7 Edge:
SD card problems - known issue HW rev problems - nag screen as well as lost apps installed on the SD card
Random reboots - many a day
Thumbprint recognition - seems like it takes me 3-4 thumbprints every time - why?
English Language Pack storage bug - eats all my space - it keeps coming back even if disabled - 2nd time ran out of space on the phone - 16-18GB footprint for this - why? what does this app do?
WIPES MY PHONES - this has happened TWICE - this is the deal breaker - I even turned on 'avoid turning on while in pocket' - doesn't matter when i go for hikes or ski in the cold maybe - it WIPES MY ENTIRE PHONE - not good
bugs with texting and message+ - seem like the phone freezes when texting - can't finish typing - message+ crashes - this is major pain
Lots of apps crashing randomly - not sure why
I really want to make this phone work but the WIPING of the DEVICE twice for me means full day of lost productivity for my traveling job. I can't be rebuilding my phone every few weeks. Is this acceptable for Samsung's flagship phone? I am open and patient to technology and not biased one way or the other (I do miss some features on my Windows Phone).
I think if You are having that many issues with your S7 Edge then you Should return it! Just because this is an Android forum doesn't have to mean going to an iPhone is scary. I live in both the Android and iPhone world and it's a-ok! Now a non-jailbroken iPhone can be much more limiting than a stock Android device but it is still a nice phone and works well out of the box. Maybe you should just return your phone as a defective one or look at the apps your are installing to see if one or two or more are causing the conflicts and issues and reboots. I haven't experienced the problems that you have except reboots after installing the latest version of iHeart Radio (now using an older version and absol6no problems) and the Good Lock app from Samsung was rebooting my phone so I Uninstalled it right away.
My S7 Edge has to be one of the coolest and most beautiful phones I have ever owned. Out of the box it is very, very customizable and even without rooting still offers so many possibilities that I could never do with my iPhone straight out of the box. There are alternatives to try out for the apps that you are currently using and where you might end up liking even more than your current favorites (I suggest trying Yaata text messaging app. Works very well! There's a discussion thread here on XDA-DEVELOPERS too). Good luck with your decision.

This really seems like a bad piece you should replace, and you will be probably fine. I havent encountered any problems aside of one SD card dying unexpectedly (probably faulty SD tho), and the poor palm rejection when typipng with one hand/upside down (this has however been largely fixed by the latest update). Otherwise, no problems at all.

Thanks burrzoo. This is my first Android so maybe I had high expectations or maybe I just got a bad one. I am patient and understand bugs, random oddities since I have only owned Windows Phones up until this point if that tells you about device/HW patience, hacked many ROMs here, etc. so I like the extensibility of the Android platform as a replacement but I guess the Verizon S7 is locked so no custom ROMs? I will say however none of those Windows phones every wiped my phone like the S7 did twice.
As far as installed apps I have really basic apps - Office, Outlook, social apps. Nothing special really. The English Language Pack is an Android installed app that comes with the S7 so there is no way to remove it apparently. I did disable a lot of the default Google, Samsung and Android apps since i don't use them. Maybe i have to leave it more stock to avoid problems? I dunno - if you guys can help me explain the WIPING of my device or HOW to prevent this that would go a long way.

Jomari,
No, I have only owned Windows Phones. I am open to either platform as a replacement. I have never owned an iPhone either but if this is the first class android experience then I would say it hasn't been so great.
I did not experienced all those problems you mentioned, my S7E is buttery smooth.
Strange, I'm having none of these issues. I would suggest you might have a faulty model.
I'd say you have a defective device.
Mine has no issues at all so far.

okay, thanks everyone. Looks like I am past the 14 days return policy and Samsung warranty won't swap hardware. Any thoughts on what I can do to get a new device? Samsung offered for me to send in the device and they can evaluate it and replace faulty HW - should i do that?
I did find two things in my searches for some of my issues:
1) There is an 'Auto-Factory Reset' device option set to ON on the S7 Edge under 'Lock Screen and security' > 'Secure lock settings' > 'Auto-factory reset' on/off toggle. I think this may be the main problem on the device I am trying to solve. On my Verizon device the checkbox is greyed out. Can you guys disable auto-wipe on your devices? The question becomes how is it auto-factory reset in my pocket when i have 'detect device in pocket' and i have locked screen. Is it flipping on somehow with movement? Why would they not have a 'are you sure you want to factory/reset?' if this is accidental?
2) On a fun note - I think I found an Android easter egg or maybe not? on 6.0.1 when I was trying to enable dev unlock (not sure if it is documented) - you can play an Android Flappy bird game:
Go to Settings > About Phone > Android Version 6.0.1 and then click it about 5 times in succession rapidly - it unlocks an Android Flappy Bird mini-game - LOL
I can confirm that on AT&T variant you can toggle the Auto-Factory Reset.

I am open and patient to technology and not biased one way or the other (I do miss some features on my Windows Phone).

just send in for a repair and you will be good to go
i suggest you are trolling
you are talking about S7e right ?!
Sounds like a very defected device.
Your really the first i heard tht has had these problems.
My fingerprint works great.
This is problem the only phone i have had tht doesnt turn on in my pocket.
Also dont know why your phone i wiping itself.
Never had that happen with any phone.
There is an option for wiping the phone if the lock screen password is wrong 5 times in a roll.
I onlynuse the default messging app but never had a problem with slow typing.
16gb for language is very off.
The whole system setup is only around 9gb.
So if you think andriod is crap then move on.
If you wanna try ios then do so.
But i can say that it sounds like your phone is broken

Man, people get so sensitive about their platforms. Yes, I am talking about the new Samsung S7 Edge on Verizon yes. How am I trolling exactly? These are honest problems I am having - is it not possible to have problems with a new device? I guess folks figure if I point out problems than I am trolling. Not sure how I have to prove this are legit.
On a positive note, I think I did find some root causes on my own recently like the 'Auto-factory reset' setting which is why my device is wiping itself however I can't disable it on Verizon for some reason.
Not sure about the other problems - running out of space, etc. so I am welcome to feedback.

the numbers of problems u mentioned never faced alltogether in a single android phone for years.. not to mention the that the S7e is one the greatest phones i ever had except for rebooting which was fixed with software update.

finger print scanner use different angles for ur finger and keep the home button clean.
u can use 2 fingerprints options for a single finger

I would be tempted to say this is a combination of OS confusion and faulty unit. Some of what you say has been experienced by others in the S7 Edge forums and some of what you said sounds a little like "it didn't do this on my Windows device". I'm not bashing you at all, I'm just saying that it may be something you come to understand with time.
I remember moving from Apple to Android many years back (I moved to the first original Galaxy S device). I felt like I'd made the biggest mistake of my life! I just didn't "get" it. Things that where simple on the iPhone suddenly had 2 or 3 different ways to complete the task on Android.
I would suggest firstly discussing the issues with Samsung or your provider and see if they are actual issues, or user confusion, then once confirmed, I guess you have a decision... stick with it and see how deep the rabbit hole goes, or return the device and decide Android isn't for you.

okay thanks for the fingerprint tips Ashoudy. I think I will send it back to Samsung and hopefully they send me a new device. Don't get me wrong - I really like the S7 and think it is well ahead of iPhone innovation wise. I got it pre-launch so maybe I just got a bad early device.
Some of these problems may not be hw related in my opinion: Factory resets, storage space problem but hopefully a newer device will fix these.
LOL at people in here saying "well mine's working fine", alright, and your point is what exactly?
It's pretty obvious that OP here has a lemon, and it should be returned. This isn't anything new though, and every manufacturer on the planet will have some of these in circulation for the first month or two. That's the price we pay for being early adopters. If you don't want to get a device with any surprises next time, I recommend you to wait for like 3 months before buying a device. Apple also had some issues with the iPhone 6 and 6S, like expected. Same with Sony, LG, HTC and Samsung. It's always a pain in the butt when it happens to you, but it's pretty much a gamble when you get a brand new device this early.
I have personally zero issues with my gold Edge (built on March 15), so this just shows how bad it can get for unlucky people like OP.

Android 7 V.S Android 6 in Real Life

Hi to every lucky body that get android 7 final.i made this topic to share your results in android 7 and compare with yours in android 6..like camera..battery..speed..tanx and hope to be usefull and active topic??????
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Well, it's a tiny bit snappier, and a tiny bit faster overall.
The battery is better; I get 3:45 to 4 hours SOT in auto brightness, full location services with wireless scanning, google now on, google cards on, hot word on from any screen... the full google experience, for short.
It's better than I had with a variety of mods and ROMs on Marshmallow.
I especially enjoy the new notification center. I can read numerous full messages and emails right from the notification slide. Quite awesome.
And I thank the gods of Google for removing the stupid enlarged tiles for Wireless and Bluetooth, the most annoying feature ever.
Battery is not bad for stock but I get the feeling with all mods and tweaks and kernels and such android M was a bit better...
But it would be unfair to compare those two as M has been worked on for a year now... N is fresh out of the box so let's wait and see how much battery can be improved.
Other than that N is very fluent and fast. Up to now also very stable and offers some important options that used to be mods some years ago.
Camera... And such... Did not really compare but would expect them to be similar...

I haven't tried N yet, but I was reading a comment on Slashdot that led me to believe, that it included something similar to CM13 privacy manager ? Is this true? Do you now get to choose what apps get access to? Can you block them from wireless, cellular data?
^ This feature alone made me upgrade the wife's and kids tablets from Nexus 7s to Nexus 7 (2013)s so I could put them on CM13.

No, but you can do that from Data Usage in Settings, in M as well.
I've been using it for 2 days now. The doze feature is way better than that of M. I've noticed certain performance boost in games like asphalt 8 as the game used to lag after thermal throttling was active in M.
The usage is very very smooth, feels very light. I mostly love the quick settings panel as because it looks and is well organised than the previous version. It's just an initial build and its quite stable. I would say I am impressed and good to go with 7.0.
Well this was my perspective.

Not entirely sure... NExus 5x has quite some struggle with charging when screen on.
Under M there was almost no charging when screen was on and you did some browsing...
Might be slightly better under N... though I havent tested it long enough to confirm... Charging basically stopped when you used your phone constantly and not just for writing a text under M...
Nope, seems same like before.

Edit: it actually seems better, I'm using my phone on charger for about 10mins, and ampere measures around 1100mAh.
On MM it wouldn't go to more than 300mAh while screen on.

I tested it while playing a game (8 ball pool, not a resource intensive app) and the percentage went up atleast 2 to 3 % in roughly 5-10 minutes. It seems that it is improved. But we still need someone to look through the kernel's code or run a reliable test!
I have it on my 5x since it dropped was on dp5 before that. Official seems smoother don't really use the 5x since I got the s7.
I'm actually seeing what seems to be worse battery performance. I've eliminated a few apps that were troublesome, but it looks like the battery is draining faster than on "M". I'm hoping that it's simply a problem with the crappy cell signal in my office - my connection bounces between 27 different towers and it's still crappy at best.
Atleast for me, I can confirm that charging while screen on is finally fixed. Hail hydra!
As previously stated, it feels a lot snappier and lighter being on Nougat as opposed to Marshmallow. Quick Settings are better overall, especially when you're able to add custom quick tiles via apps in the Play Store. Only complaint about the Quick Settings is that the Wifi and Bluetooth used to toggle on press, then open mini settings when you clicked the text. Now it just opens mini settings. I can get used to that, though.
Oh, and I still hate the white background in the settings app. Haven't found any Layers themes that work well yet. If anybody else finds one, let me know.

Important, there are sorta probs about Substratum and Android N, such as make sure you wont apply it to Chrome and Documents for example. You'd get instant force close. And if there's any other app like that, you need to make sure it is off the list to get themed.

Yeah you got some trashware running, one of the worst is WhatsApp, it's a liability all way around.
UBA... best to go directly to the site through your browser rather than let their app run on your device unless you really need to.
Google is also sucking hard too. If you need its functionality fine.
If not, you can temporarily disable it. Try disabling just Google play Services to see how much of a difference it makes over 24 hours. You can toggle it on/off as needed. It has a lot of nickel and dime dependencies that rely on it. So cut the dragon's head off and see what you got.

Open apps and notifications, then battery within an app and restrict..that's all I've needed to do tbh.
Have never breached 11 hours on this phone, managed 14 on the OnePlus 5 and 17 on the p20 pro

The issue with all of these apps goes far beyond just data mine or fedding you disinformation.
Ever post something you shouldn't have? It's bound to happen. Deleting may not stop it from doing damage.
Anyone investigating you can weaponize even seemingly innocuous posts against you let alone those occasional off posts.
You have conveniently index them for easy reference for anyone who cares to investigate or profile you.
The larger the platform's head count, the higher the risks.
15 years ago I posted on FB for 3 weeks until the light went on. NO.
I dont think i can live without whatsapp. Although i dont do facebook no more. Guys, i got two questions instead of opening a new thread.
1. If i wanted to squeeze out more battery life, will rooting and undervolting/ underclocking make any difference? Is there a custom kernel that is optimised for battery life?
2. Whats d best GCam? The camera on this phone is good, but i feel the software is underwhelming.
Cigars are a more benign addiction... Perhaps you just stated the most convincing argument to delete WhatsApp. Positive benefits vs negative ones; what's your payoff for using it?
You would root a phone just to use a social media app? When the actual problem is the app and the least of of it's undesirable qualities is battery consumption.
Rooting isn't needed on today's phones or even necessarily desirable.
Don't need to see another I bricked my phone thread here.
Aa for Gcam I don't have a clue.

Whether I should or not is irrelevant, I can and I choose to.
Being good at what I know means my time is unaffected.
I can root and install a ROM in less time it takes to set up your new phone.
Also this little lot:
Not watching ads
Being able to remove bloat.
Being able disable zram / install custom ROMs /kernels / Magisk mods / tweak clock settings / systemless modifications / change boot animation / add animations to device / use root apps like wifikill / access the 4th camera / back up in frozen state using titanium or swift / disable logging.
I could do this all day bud, saying you don't need root on xda is like saying don't share an opinion on Reddit it makes no sense, if you'd like to see what no root on a device does to a community, please go and check out a Huawei devices threads, it is a ghost town, there is literally no point of them being there it's just full of sad people who didn't realise they couldn't unlock their bootloader with the occasional thread about using your phone without root, it's a pretty pathetic sight in all honesty.
"Just because you can doesn't mean you should"
Also please no more quotes, I can't take any more.

100% agree.
If you've ever played a car game on PC/consoles and you get to buy a crappy or sub par car but it can be upgraded to be a bohemoth monster, like a Honda s2000 or VW GTI.
That's Android
Apple is the other option for the more expensive Ferrari, that is rapid but cannot be modified at all and you're already at the peak of what it can be..
People with an imagination should stick with Android, if you need to have choices made for you then yep jump on Apple they're more than happy to choose for you.
Seems were going off topic here but at the same time rooting is really closely tied to battery life and performancr.
When I had my p20 pro. I could unlock the bootloader and root, which I did, the processor was not enough to run GameCube games, but when I disabled zRAM it was the catalyst to make games just about playable, used the windwaker as a base (I have a thread about this on the P20 Pro forum)
I lost my key and then installed a firmware that locked the bootloader, I was screwed from that point onwards.
Performance gone, all root apps gone, and believe me when you can't root you really miss those apps, there just is no comparable variant, the entire P20 Pro forum died overnight, there was nothing to install, modify, change or tweak..the knock on effect is the subsequent Huawei forums, check out the 30 and 40 forums, they're dead, deader than Bidens presidency.
Long live root I say.
So long as we get someone to take over Magisk development now that topjohnwu has sold his soul and so long as Nvidia don't acquire ARM and void any attempts to root, were golden. But they're two big IF's
There's always been a threat over root and that will always be the case but this is the biggest issue we've ever faced on a massive scale.
For example, every Magisk user today lost the ability to use Gpay globally.
Cheers John.
