...Who seems to be getting worse battery life since I've rooted and installed CM10 and Franco Kernel than stock.
Before with stock I was only losing about 1% every two hours on standby (sometimes even better I've no idea how)
Now I'm losing about 3% an hour on standby and also about 30% an hour screen time with just basic browsing (Screen brightness set to auto).
Also Media server is hammering my battery. Like I lost 3% battery in 15 mins without the screen on just playing music (not streaming) is that normal, I've come from an iphone 4s which didn't lose that in an hour :S
have i flashed it badly is there something else maybe i should try or are these stats about right ????
thanks guys
That's just the way it is just custom roms. When flashing, put your head between your legs and pray for the best. You can spend hours trying to figure out what's gone wrong, but you might never get an answer.
You can try underclocking your N4. Currently my dual-core Snapdragon S3 T-Mo Galaxy S2 is underclocked to 810MHz from 1.5GHz and performance is still great. I'm guessing you can UC your N4 to at least 1.2-1GHz and performance will still be great because of the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU. Also, what governor and i/o are you using?

Hi Gents
Thanks for the reply, yeah it does seem a bit of a hit and miss kinda situation, I'm not masively bothered, im hoping eventually someone will stumple across a fix for the way the screen murders the battery life but im not holding my breath. Still love the phone, really getting used to it now, have tried (and failed) many times to switch to android, must be honest, this is the closest I've come so far to waving bye bye to ios, android is really really fantastic as an os, it's also super pretty to look at these days, stock apps like contacts, calender and the phone app itself are beautiful.
Let the phone and battery have several cycles, it will improve, eventually
thanks mate !!

Under clocking your phone isn't a viable situation. It's a phone, what's the point in it if you're not going to use it to your fullest when my phone lasts through the whole day going from 384-1500?
Some battery tips for op:
- download better battery stats (Google it for a xda version) use this to debug wakelock and ensure your phone is deep sleeping under cpu states. You can also use cpu spy to check cpu stats. Better battery stats is a must need.
- disable Google latitude in maps. Disable the automatic reporting and any other checked marks
- disable Google now cards that you have no use for
- disable gps (some apps use gps and drains battery when it keeps using gps when it isn't necessary)
- ensure your governor is interactive and on latest version of Franco (r20 is very good)

Just stick with the stock kernel that comes with cm10.

Highly advise doing that. Other kernels are way more optimized whereas CM is focused on the ROM itself and not optimizing the stock kernel.
I believe CM10 uses stock Google kernel anyways (could be wrong).
Use Franco Kernel or anybody elses kernel that you choose to.
Mine definitely improved after rooting and flashing custom ROM. Battery life when I was still stock was horrible.

A ROM has very minimal battery life improvements, it isn't as significant as a kernel. Hence the definition of "better"
I was hoping someone could give me more information to why my galaxy s5 is scoring in the s4 grouping.
Attached some screen shots to show test results
Score around 27500 on anTuTu benchmark
My only guess is that it's not rooted and the galaxy s5 number is for a rooted version.
Is it slow in daily use? If not, then just leave it alone. If it is, you might have some power saving feature stuck on.
And no, that number is not for a rooted phone. Rooting doesn't make phones faster. It can if you install a custom kernel or increase the CPU speed, but just rooting a phone does didly squat in terms of speed.

I just d/l AnTuTu and ran the test, my phone has been off the charger all day and I've used it off and on all day, it ran with a score of: 36348

Good ish I must have switched on power saver awhile back and forgot I switched it on lol
Ran the benchmark again results were 37000ish
I'm going to close the tread basically me just being stupid
How do you close a thread, do i do it or is it the mods that have to.

You will mainly get three different answers.
People on stock: It sucks
People on XtreStoLite: It's insane
Some lucky people on stock (rooted etc): It's just fine.
I need root on 511 without tripping Knox and xposed, so greenify and amplify can work properly then battery life will be good. Atm it's okay is.

Thanks, so over all, do you recommend that phone?
Do think that with normal use like watching videos, texting, social media - I'll be in the evening with decent amount of battery?
Sure, battery life will probably improve because atm the device is still awake too much

Depends if you want to trip knox or not.
Stock: 2-5 hours SOT (Depending on brightness, features and apps and if you're on mobile data or wifi.
Stock, rooted: Will increase your mobile data SOT by a few hours by following some of the guides that explains how to disable services and such.
XtreStoLite rom: At least 4-5 hours SOT on mobile data (my screen brightness is on auto and when i'm on mobile data i'm probably outside, so the brightness is medium to high.) and up to 8 hours+ SOT on wifi (with low brightness of course). XtreStoLite makes this phone having some of the best battery life there is available on the market right now.

Beside battery, there is some cons i should be worried about? (Also beside SD card, Im asking more about other things, like interface, is there lags, Is it heats up a lot or not?)

On stock, some people complains about lag. I never witnessed it tho. On XtreStoLite rom there is no lag at all. The rom is debloated. No heat under normal (sometimes heavy use).
It got memory management bug, so you can only have 3-4 apps in the background before it begins closing it. There is (again) a fix for that on XtreStoLite, but will probably get fixed in a month or two (when their new phone arrives).
But really, I never had problems with the memory bug. It's if you open a page in chrome, open 4 other apps and then Chrome again, the page just refresh. On 4g connection you barely notice it.
Good discussion. However, needs to continue on the pre-existing thread for that purpose.Battery Life Discussion Here
Hi xda family
What has everyone's battery life been so far on root?
Preroot I was getting over a day with 6sot and 16 percent
Android drain.
After rooting with the eng kernel it has dipped a lot with high android system drain. Have not used amplify and greenify yet. Just been used my tweaks I did on pd7 kernel.
Thoughts?
Amplify will probably help out a lot. I've seen others reporting the battery is worse after rooting as well. Hopefully someone nails it down and posts a fix. If not, I'll see what I can do once (if) I decide to root.
Yeah I can literally watch my battery % drop after root. I noticed 46% of use is the android system. I'm also getting lots of random reboots.
You guys rooted with an EngBoot that was not intended for daily use, this is one of the side effects.
Yeah the ENG-BOOT is a terrible way to achieve root. I really hope that this tiny victory doesn't cause people to stop looking for real root. The ENG-BOOT is not meant for daily use is going to cause lots of issues, it's designed just to push fixes to the system for an authorized repair shop.
The focus should have always been on the bootloader.

Wow 46 is high. To be honest for eng kernel it's been stable. No lag and reboots for me. I am debloating and doing a few tweaks and making it settle in some more. If I can get to 4 sot I will take that.
Also I have heard if you your governor set to on demand it will cause reboots. Using interactive and been solid.

TEK knows what he's doing, so I'm sure this will at least help with battery. This, plus Amplify and BBS+ should at least help get battery close to where it was before root.

+1 it runs a lot cooler than the normal stock rooted. And way smoother without have to tweak anything with kernel. It's basically plug and play.
Keep us informed please

dam we got root now? I didnt even know
With all the different tweaks now available through root, the battery life is quite excellent. The only concerning thing is how hot this phone can get at times (after a reboot, gaming, downloading an app) that I may be doing great harm to my batteries life in the long run.
okay so,
the engineering kernel's default governor is performance and that's the only thing that's causing the heat issues and thus, the throttling of the CPU cores to lower frequencies resulting in lag/stuttery performance. that's all you're experiencing. thinking that apps are using more/less battery than usual is silly.
after wiping data and cache and going through the horribly slow setup process, I used kernel adiutor to change the governor back to interactive (NOT ondemand) and let the phone finish settling/syncing. after 2 days, it's back to its silky smooth performance and all-day battery. I don't see anyone experiencing anything other than symptoms of the performance governor.
btw, it took the same amount of time for my phone to stop being laggy when I first bought it. so literally all you need to do is change your governor back to interactive if you want the performance/battery life you had before, and zero heat issues. antutu scores 110k-138k depending on temperature/throttling. just like it did before. battery gets 4:30-5:30hrs SOT just like it did before.
TL;DR

I used kernel aduitor too till I found out my big core were maxed at 1500 also just like the little cores and you can't change those with aduitor.
Once I installed kernel toolkit, I confirmed it.
So I bumped up the big cores max and got much more speed back. No heat here
Food for thought.

My s7 is arriving today and I was all set to root. But I keep reading posts about how the phone becomes super laggy with all types of battery drain.
I guess I'm trying to gauge if that's a real issue or people just overreacting.

If you follow all the steps after rooting it's not bad. Sot is not as good but standby time is the same for me. I also have no lag.

I rooted my SM-G930V, and I am experiencing some heat from the phone when it is sleeping- not so much when it is unlocked and operating.
As for battery drain- I have not noticed any major loss in battery usage.
There also seems to be a significant speed issue with speed- took around 5 seconds to open the settings app, But this can be fixed by
editing CPU governor from interactive to ondemand with Kernel Aduitor.
I am looking into this article to fix the heat issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...guide-to-fix-s7-lag-root-s7-variants-t3441715
Stang5litre rom and you wont regret it
You can do a lot with various Xposed modules and other root apps to mitigate the drain, but there is some drain nonetheless. SOT takes a bit of a hit. Standby time, it's negligible.
I recommened personally sticking to stock. I use to be rooted and between battery life and issues I went back to stock. This was before the roms came out. I have a new born and a family I can't play around with signal dropping, phone restarting, lagging and whatever else. I like stock with nougat beta. If the bootloader ever gets unlocked or something else that interests me to root maybe one day but not worth it for me right now.

With Stang5litre's rom I've have zero problems.
There is no way with any rom or any app (unless it is magical and brand new) that you aren't having issues with this phone and root. I tried every app I could and 2 roms available here for it as well and it was still laggy with terrible battery life. I held on with this phone as long as I could hoping for a better root method but I couldn't wait any more. The performance after a few apps and kernel changes is still terrible compared to stock. The battery life after fixes and kernel changes is equally as terrible. I was getting around 1 hour and 10 mins of SOT before it was completely dead. I loved the phone and stock it had great performance and battery life, but that eng kernel for root just destroys it. I NEED root on my phone or I would have kept it stock. Word of advise, keep this phone stock or sell it and get something that can be rooted and actually stay usable.

I get about 5-6 hours SOT and no performance issues. I occasionally overheat but that's it. Different people have different results, for whatever reason.
