I'm about to buy a used Nexus 4 off of craigslist to use in Taiwan and Japan and possibly through T-mobile in the US later this year. It should work for all of those, right?
Anything in particular I should inspect when I meet up with the person? Stuff unique to Nexus 4 maybe, but also stuff in general, since I've never bought a used phone before!
Thanks a bunch guys!
To be hones, stay away from the N4. Before I bought the N4 I had a Nexus S and was happy with it.
In my opinion there is no "perfect" phone, but the N4 has critical bug: e.g. the N4 will stuck in "deep-sleep"-mode over night if you don't plug in the charger, ALTHOUGH it was fully charged.
I had this bug not only over night. Sometimes it happened when I had this phone in my pocket.
This is DEADLY when you are using the phone as a alarm glock and have exams and I am not the only one with this problem.
I also had other problems like bootloops after random reboots. I tried stock and custom roms and kernels.
I don't know if the N5 has similar problems. If not (I hope so), I would recommend you the N5.
# EDIT: About 2 month ago, I changed the SIM-Card and configured it. After I finished configuring the SIM-Card I put my old back on my N4 -> got stuck in booloop again.
Check for dead spots and ghost touches, its a pretty common on the 2nd edition of of the G4's.
My Nexus 4 is currently facing these problems.

Unfortunately, my budget won't allow for a Nexus 5, so Nexus 4 is where it's at for me. I'm going to be buying the N4 for $150, so the N5 would be almost double of that.
Looking around on google, I can find some, but not too many people with the deep sleep freezing bug. I wonder how common it is.
The deep freeze bug isn't that common, nor is it something I've ever had a personal problem with.
One thing to watch out for: as you can see by this board the Nexus is a very customizable device. Make sure you understand what you're getting and if it is truly stock or if the seller installed any custom kernels, patches, etc. Mine for example is running the stock ROM but is rooted w/ custom recovery and has Franco's kernel, an old modem to enable LTE, and the Dalvik optimization patches. The extras aren't apparent at first glance. Asking for an assurance that the phone is truly stock or that seller lists any changes isn't unreasonable. Getting a screen cap of the setup/phone screen might be useful too or at least a look at it if you pick up locally.
For hardware, it's an all glass phone so watch for scratches and cracks. The power button takes abuse so make sure it works properly. Camera is a common complaint so maybe snap a photo of two with it. Finally, you want a clean IMEI so for a Craigslist sale I'd want to see the phone working on a network before I took possession. Ideally seller will have it working, you check it, then they remove their SIM and factory reset it in front of you.
I bought my N4 used off of eBay for under $200 and couldn't be happier. Good luck.

First, I am going to say I agree with everything @rhavasy said... That being said, my honest opinion for the price of used Nexus 4, you may want to consider the Moto G 16GB GPE (Google Play Edition) for $199, you will also have a warranty and no worries that it has been modified or abused significantly (I once knew a guy that bragged he had overclocked his phone to the point it nearly burned his hand, then he restored it and sold it as "stock")
At first glance it looks inferior to the N4 in most respects, and technically speaking for the most part that is correct, but my son needed a new phone recently and the N5 and other GPE models were way out of his budget at the time, and Moto G was so well reviewed we got one, and it is amazing... it is on par with the N4 in all real world uses, including gaming, plus the battery life is easily double my N4.
If you really are set on a N4, be careful, otherwise, consider the Moto G... Plus the "water resistant" feature of G makes it a pretty amazing phone, check out some of the Moto G water test videos on Youtube from reputable review sites, 30 minutes immersion in water well powered up and no ill effects.
There are many horror stories with used N4s. Because it was a pretty highend phone for a low price at the time many people who bought it didn't take proper care of it so the market is flooded with damaged units with some very nasty scratches. I saw one once, mint condition with its original box and everything yet the screen looked as if someone had taken a fork to it, with a hammer.
Still an excellent phone which should work for you for years:good:
If the guy has the phone insured he can always claim it stolen after he sells it to you and then you'll have a barred phone, a danger with buying any 2nd hand phone privately.
I've had my nexus 4 for 16months and is still perfect, buy the phone and enjoy it

I still love my N4. I have had it for about a year, and rooted and installed a LOT of stuff, absolutely NO problems. I don't see anything wrong. You should get it.
I've had my N4 for about 2 years. It's the best phone I've ever had.
yes, nothing wrong with nexus 4.excellent phone.

Hi,
Yesterday my precious Galaxy Note GT-N7000 was stolen.
I am considering to get myself a Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005).
The questions:
1) Is the Note 3 a good choice? I used my Note 1 over two years, mainly for these tasks:
- phone (duh)
- e-mails
- web browsing
- ebooks
- music
- movies
- taking pictures
Is the usability same or better, for these tasks?
2) I never rooted my N1, nor did I use custom ROM's. Why? Because I got scared with the EMMC Brick Bug.
Is the N3 fine to flash with custom ROM's? Any Brick Bug? What about the firmware counter? Can it be reset?
3) How is the screen? Is FullHD really an improvement over 1280x720? Or does it just waste battery and CPU?
4) Are there proven burn-in issues on the screen?
The main question, though, is: how does the N3 compare to much cheaper phones like the bq Aquaris 5" or the upcoming 6"? They cost less than half. I wonder if they are good enough, since the lower price means less worrying about such an expensive item.
I always was scared to **** to drop my N1 and often preferred to take a cheap phone with me, instead, when I had to go to rougher terrain.
Also, half the price would mean I could change phone twice as often - my N1 actually really sucked after 2 years: it was sooo sloooowwww. Everything I did, I had to wait for up to 3 seconds. Like opening the contacts - that even took longer!
I think Samsung killed the phone with all the bloatware and respective updates over the two years. Add the brick bug and my experience was not that good. However, my N1 was like new, had a great screen and once the app started, it was quick.
So what's your opinion?
Thanks,
vma
1) I used the n7000 for about a week before i bought a new n9005, never looked back
2) to properly root your device with a custom recovery.. no the n9005 flash counter cannot be reset currently. Mine was 0x1 the day i bought it i needed a custom recovery.
3) I love the screen on here, the colours and resoloution look very nice.
4) the screen will probably burn over time.. most do, but 6 months of 75%+ brightness not a sign yet.
Got this n9005 in december lastyear, have not looked at another device since, i have it set up perfectly.. amazing battery life, 4g.. 32gb storage and sdcard.. 3gb of ram..a very good camera! Also i really like the speaker position. The usb 3 charging cable is much more sturdy too.
I hope this answers your question...but i am biased because this is a note 3 forum

N3 is much more better compare to N1. Though the bloatware still a lot (or perhaps a lot more compare to N1), but the hardware specs itself is much way better than N1. You should google the comparison of N1 and N3 to have a better view/understanding on hardware differences.

N3 doesn't have eMMC brick bug as compare to N1, and never face any SDS as in N2.
But, to be frank, before you root / flash any custom system, my advise to you is to check the multitouch issue (you can simply download multitouch tester from google play). Some device has this issue (I don't). And try to check the screen for dead pixels / any strange issue.
N3 counter is not the binary counter which is reversable. N3 and other Samsung devices come with KNOX flag, which is irreversible once it is tripped. It can be tripped if you try to flash anything related to system which is not digitally signed by samsung (ex. root, custom recovery, custom ROM). But there's towelroot now, which is reported can work for certain firmware. You may google more about this tools (as I don't bother with it, my device tripped already)

I don't suggest to compare N3 with other cheaper phones, as the specs itself is really different a lot. But there are some other phones come up as competitors to N3 (e.g. HTC M8, Xperia Z2, LG G3, Oppo Find 7a, 1+ One).
Sorry, but I never heard Aquaris.

N3 price is way cheaper now compare to 1st launch. But indeed it is an expensive device. For me, I have no choice but to use, as I use the S-Pen for working as well.
But I never face any lagging at N3. I did face it with N2 (sometimes), and definitely N1.

1) yes, 3GB RAM, FHD and higher brightness helps; also clearly better camera.
2) Note 3 is OK on eMMC, you can flash a huge lot of things (unless you get a bootloader-locked version); there is a knox counter which you can still keep 0 with a little care (read about it, there is a lot to read - but absolute first thing is to stop all updates until you decide on it, both in firmware and security)
3) screen is an improvement
4) not that I know of, probably less than on note 1.
5,6) Aquaris is a 1GB RAM phone - NEVER again buy one! Most of the slowness is from RAM, that is also one reason why your note 1 was so slow. 2GB inexpensive phones are now available from China (or from companies like Aquaris which re-brand such cheap phones at a premium price) but build variability is higher (meaning more duds) and you never know what future software update you will get (if ever).
Hi,
Thanks for the replies so far.
The bq Aquaris E6 I mentioned, will be available next month. The specs (in spanish) are: http://www.bqreaders.com/productos/aquaris-e6.html#techspecs
The price is half of what a N3 would cost me.
To clarify my questions:
1) Of course the N3 is better than the N1 and I am not even considering buying a cheap N1 or N2. What I meant is: is the N3 as good an experience in 2014 as the N1 was in 2012? Does it fully satisfy you guys? I do expect the best from a premium product like this.
2) I am glad that the eMMC bug is not present, however I am pissed off, as I discovered the multi touch issues. How bad is it really?
3) The burn-in: I am the kind of person who would never enjoy a plasma screen because while watching a movie, I would be paying more attention to constant parts of the image possibly burning in, instead of enjoying the movie. Here it is the same: I find in unacceptable to notice that the upper status bar left that part of the screen brighter or darker after a few months of usage.
4) What about heating up? I was disappointed by the N1, when I tried to play 3D games and the CPU heated up so much. I got concerned if it would melt, that's how hot it got. Any issues with the N3? I know it will actually speed down, if the heat gets to much, but will that reduce performance significantly?
5) I just noticed: there is only one or two (?) official Samsung case (or whatever you would call it). How do you guys protect the phone? I used to have a sleeve on my N1, but there doesn't seem to be one by Samsung anymore.
Please don't get offended, but I am struggeling between these options:
- Samsung N3 (that's what I really want, but at the price, it needs to last 2-3 years without any problem and after that period, it would still have to serve as a backup phone)
- Cheap chinese clone (would allow me to change phone sooner and would be less problematic if I drop/break or lose it)
- Apple iPhone 5S (the reason I am considering this: it apparently just works and has a great set of security, which is what I learned to value, when my N1 got stolen: I had data on the external SD (can be read by any PC), the PIN was active, but no "self-erase" function was available if the pin was entered 5 times wrong, etc.)
But the bottom line is: I have doubts about this multi touch issue and I wonder why so many people post that the screen should be checked for dead pixels.
I buy my phones from a big distributor and if the phone has problems it is a major pain to exchange it, especially if it is a "minor" problem in the eyes of the distributor.
Thanks for your opinions.
Cheers,
vma

i have been due an upgrade for some time, but stuck with the note 2 as it does exactly what i need
but it is getting on a bit and slowing down, if i was to upgrade to a note 4 or whatever is next coming out what would i lose? and what would be biggest gains?
I love the note2 battery life - and chargers pretty quick. this was wit hthe original battery, and then i bought a replacement (said genuine note 2 batt) a few months back to breathe some life back in to the phone.
i love the ability to airplay images and video to my samsung tv.
(and even to other models with the play2 app).
the screen size is good.
The screen is even good in sunlight when i increase the brigthness.
I like the ability to increase storage with the sd card slot, i hear some phones dont allow this now. Pictures do get backed up but i dont intend to download them everytime i want to view them, havign them on the phone is crucial.
I havent rooted the phone due to issues with GPS and maps on an older phone, as these are pretty important to me.
What have people been impressed with when upgrading and what have you missed?
I bought the Note Edge (with Verizon) because I wanted a flagship phone with all the benefits. I however still do not have the Marshmallow update. I cannot use SamsungPay. I cannot use Samsung Internet Browser 4.0 with Adblock Fast. The list goes on. I'm regretting getting this phone. Am I missing something or is the Note Edge the forgotten Flagship phone?
You kinda hit it. I have one and will be waiting on the March Marshmallow update if my battery life does not improve i'm done. I average 2 Hrs screen on time. My Nexus 6 which is supposed to be also bad on battery gives me 4-5 hrs. I do love the functionality of an actual separate screen not what Sammy decided to go with for the 6 series.
I used to LOVE this phone, but the updates ruined it for me. I also average 2 hours on time, thats less than half of what it used to be. If I let it sit overnight 8 hours, I drop from 100%-80% in 8 hours. It really sucks because I won't be able to upgrade until summer. Let's hope this Marshmallow update improves the phone if it ever comes.
Wait when you guys say you average only 2 hours screen time, is that because your phone is on 5.0.1 or 5.1.1. ?
And did you try custom ROMS?
And to OP, there is a Marshmellow update coming. Its just going to take a while. I've seen the beta of it.
Btw it is sad that Samsung abandoned this great peice of innovation. I like mine and though I wish I could get more than 4 hours of heavy on screen time usage, I guess I can't complain hearin what you are going through. I immediately downgraded my phone to 4.4.4 once I recieved it. Not that there was anything wrong with 5.0.1 but I just didn't like some of the pop notifications. It annoyed me quite a bit and Poweramp didn't work well with it and the Edge screen like it does on 4.4.4 so I went to 4.4.4
I'm on 5.1.1
5.0.1 was fine for me, but it was the 5.1 update that really ruined the phone. I can't use the fingerprint scanner because it makes the phone freeze and my battery life is trash!! I wish I would've stayed on Kitkat, I'm so jealous!!
my screen whites i noticed is now yellowish in color, i bought 2 aftermarket batteries and it still doesnt last that long, about 3 hrs screen time, dont think i will get the s7 though, might just get a used note 5 til the note 6 drops

This can't be happening with a Custom ROM. Have you guys tried using a Custom ROM?
I'm on stock rooted 5.1.1 rom on the fy version. I get about 3 hrs screen time with mobile data on. I unplug from charger at around 7 am en plug it back in around 11 pm. If I keep mobile data off and only wi-fi on, I get about 4 hrs. The problem is that the 3g or 4G connection drains too much battery... if I'm in airplane mode using Wi-Fi only, I get about 6 hours screen on time. If I use the phone continuously after unplugging I get about 5 hours screen time mobile data on.
The drain happens when I'm not using the phone... all the above SOT a times are with screen brightness at 50%...
I really love this phone. Great use of the edge screen. Unfortunately not much development going on... For me it's hands down the best phone I ever had, and I've had a couple of other flagship devices...
It is not that bad
Firstly I would like to say Hi
I am on the rant train myself, but I would like to clear some things for most of the people in this thread. The main battery drain that occurs in many Samsung devices (I have witnessed it on my Note Edge as well as on Galaxy s6 and my Galaxy s4) is caused from weird google play services bug. The essential of the bug is that once your Mobile Data is connected they are no way to disconect it. There is a way and to acomplish it, one must have wi-fi access and must restart the phone so it will disconect the Mobile Data and use the wi-fi radio.
So TL;DR go look at any app that is eating your battery and if you notice "total connection time" which is WAY above the level it should have been you are a winner! I am looking for a way to remove this issue since I got the phone (6 months and more now) and as far as I know there is no success in doing so.
Apart from this problem, the phone is EXTREMELY cool. Very stable (taking in mind that it runs TW), good camera, good screen, S PEN = magic, Edge panel is something once man got into there is no comming back! So the battery life issue may not be on the Samsung's side this time, guys. I am loving the phone and I am expecting Marshmallow to cure the issue I am ranting about for 15 minutes now..
Good luck for all of you trying to like your phones. If you have spent so much money on something there must be a thing that will make you happy for having it!

Agreed. Coupled with the spen and the multi-window edge panel there's absolutely nothing like it IMO. Having been eligible for an upgrade for months now I've looked at the S6 edge plus, Note 5, new iphones etc but nothing comes close to the Edge.
Grab a spare battery + charging dock from ebay and forget about battery life.
Im going to be sad if I break it as there is simply no substitute for this phone. I'll also be sad if they kill it with the marshmallow update lol.
Why take the chance ?
Don't update.

Im banking on marshmallow, i have it on my nexus 6 same apps etc and 5HOURS SCREEN ON TIME !!!
Hi guys. I feel the same. I paid Samsung £700 when it was first released for what I thought was an amazing concept, flagship device. We were promised the world and we were delivered nothing. It feels as if Samsung just gave up on the Edge even though it promised so much.
Things I dislike
-The update to Marshmallow is slow (though I've read it should be with us in 1-3 months time).
-The dev community for the Edge is poor compared to other devices.
-TouchWiz sucks (decent features but poor performance and looks).
-Battery life/SOT (I had to carry a spare battery/keep phone plugged in via usb)
Things I like
-Edge screen is quite useful
-Screen is gorgeous!
-Uniqueness
-Overall look and feel
I've just placed an order for the Nexus 6P - I will of course miss the S-Pen and some other TouchWiz features but I won't miss the sluggishness of TouchWiz - I hate it!
Having owned three Samsung flagship devices when they were first released (Galaxy S, Note, Note Edge) it does feel like my affinity with Samsung handsets has come to an end. I will of course still buy their TV's, monitors etc., just not mobiles. You only need to take one look at the Nexus community/dev scene to see what your missing.
See you guys, I've had a nice time, but I'm out!
The big problem with this phone is Samsung's MDM suite that's built in to the phone's programming.
The thing's a royal pain in the azz.
It makes the phone neurotic.

Yeah I don't know what I'll do once my phone either breaks or the battery and spare battery give way. I'm gonna try and be extra careful with it. This phone is handsdown feature wise, the best thing ever. I just wish more people saw it that way so Samsung would've continued with the line. I just cannot fathom how quickly Samsung ditched this phone.

That's why i bought the spare charger box and battery, it's more likely to come with an official Samsung battery.. seems to work great, bought from Amazon from one of the other sellers rather than the main add that had reviews saying the battery only lasted a few weeks.

i was having problems with the phone recently. it would not wake up or the screen would flicker when i tried to go between apps. it was really frustrating. i also could not use the google messenger text app after the google play services auto updated from the play store. then there was the edge board app (which i love) crashing. it was a mess. i tried to go back to kit kat. i had odin and the kit kat .tar and i was denied. (i started a thread about getting help to get around the "fail" notice i receive but no responses yet). with that said i just did a factory reset and i am back to normal. this is, like others have stated, THE best phone I have ever owned. That is saying a lot because i used to gt a new flagship phone every year for the past 15 years. I slipped samsungs shameful iPhone clone offering of the note 5 and since they made no note edge 2 i will use this til it dies. they still have unlocked international versions on ebay so if samsung screws us again this year i will skip my 2nd upgrade opportunity.

i was having problems with the phone recently. it would not wake up or the screen would flicker when i tried to go between apps. it was really frustrating. i also could not use the google messenger text app after the google play services auto updated from the play store. then there was the edge board app (which i love) crashing. it was a mess. i tried to go back to kit kat. i had odin and the kit kat .tar and i was denied. Yeah. It sucks to be a minority in everything especially when it comes to taste. For those of us that live and die by how great this phone is, we're gonna have to deal with being stuck with it till it dies or we can't find it in the market. Best phone I have ever had despite its battery life. Utility is simply unmatched
So after 5+ years with a Note 3 (yes...5+ years!) I'm going to a new Note 4. My Note 3 has been a warrior beast! It has survived multiple drops, car hood slams (don't ask), falling from an airplane (not lying), buried in the snow for several hours, rain, etc ... but it has never been inside a toilet . It is still in very good condition with a blemish-free screen thx to multiple Spigen cases and glass screen protectors. It's running the Alliance Rom (Android 5.0) and it’s been tweaked to the max so it able to handle pretty much what you throw at it. ANYWAYS...not here to sell it(sounds like it huh!) but to say hi and welcome myself to whatever is left of this community. Yes the Note 4 is a pretty outdated phone compared to today standards and it’s not the lack of funds but I’m old school and I like user-removable batteries, micro-sd slots, headphone jacks, IR blasters, non-rounded 16x9 screens, custom ROMs, and most of all phones that are not so delicate that they break just by farting on them.
So it’s been a while XDA…now tell me WHAT IS THE BEST ROM for this phone!...I’M KIDDING … I still know how to behave myself here. I know I have A LOT to read to come to that decision myself. Like I said, just saying hi but if you got any input on what I should be looking at or any little tweaks I could miss in the beginning then please share if you like. In the mean time I’m waiting for my new Note 4 to arrive in the mail and I’m hoping it’s not a fake…oh yeah you better believe I know what I’m gonna be looking for. Thank you everyone!
