So I'm on vacation with my family and have a Verizon nexus 6. I waned to further test the usability of the phone in water. I have seen the video where it was submerged and was convinced it was good to go for the most part. I decided to record some video about 2in submerged. It did it great and worked so i kept going and tried some more. Never had it deeper than about 6in. After about 3videos the proximity sensor changed to a red light pretty much then it faded away. The next malfunction was the signal dropped and then the phone shut off and it was basically in a boot loop going from Google boot animation and continuing to loop. After about 30 min of that the screen started to go fully white then black for another 30 Min. Then it died and is not coming on. So basically do not purposely submerge your n6. Just wanted i share my experience with the community. For those wondering. I have a new one coming Monday after the $150 deductible.
Also prior to doing this i had used the phone in the shower 3 times with no problems getting it wet.
So don't submerge a phone in water that isn't rated as waterproof?

Water resistance means it resists water, not that it is water proof. It is more likely to survive a splash or two but is not designed to be submerged. Think old Casio watches that you could wash your hands with while wearing but going to the pool would have been a mistake.

I didn't even know nexus 6 advertised water resistance, I knew it had no wasn't water proof certification though.

on the motorola website it had said water resistant yes ( for what ever thats worth) it was removed like a month later not even.

Water resistant is splash proof, which is no where near submersible. Jeez some people are odd.
OP, appreciated the attempt but if you decide to purposefully destroy another phone maybe next time do a series of water exposures with each slightly higher than the last. This might give the rest of us a better idea of how strong the water resistance really is.

I think its funny so many of you give a **** what he does with his phone. who cares, if he wants to throw it in the toilet and piss all over it and pull it back out and use it that's his decision.. I would like to know what the limitations of the phone are as far as water goes, so yeah dunking a 600$ device in water isn't something I have balls enough to do but of someone else is willing to hey I will definitely watch

it just so happens, that my Trinity(6 months old) decided that it likes water, and forced me to sit it in a cup of water in my cars cup holder. i looked at it about ten minutes later, and after yelling some vulgarities at it, and myself, i immediately popped out the battery.
do you guys think this device will come out alive? btw, it went speaker side down in the water... and believe it or not, the trinity can hold ALLOT of water.

10 minutes.... I don't even think that you can hold your breath under water for that long - not to mention delicate electronic devices....
You did the right thing poping out the battery immediately. Hope that no one called you during its swimming and you didn't touch any buttons after it finished.
Now, what you can do it very limited - you may want to disassemble it - at least open up the case, and then use a hair dryer to blow it for an hour. After that, put it in a box together with some solid state dehydrants for few days.
And pray...
There are cases of Wizard swimming (diving actually) for hours and yet came out well, after the opening up and drying process. There is still hope.

Coffee and Coke are bad Ordinary tap water is also bad because the impurities (calcium etc) will eventually form some microscopic crystals on the MB tracks. Distilled water is best, but I presume you weren't drinking that
Try & disassemble as much as possible, and leave to dry naturally in a warm place for 2-3 days- dpn't be tempted to 'try it out' before that.

well... i guess the good news is that i have filtered water.... im not talking brita either... im talking huge filtration units in the basement that look like big ol' helium tanks. my water is clean... either way, i don't happen to have any solid state dehydration material handy.. unless were talking about silica gel beads... in which case i have about 8 pounds of it. a drawback to this is that it spews dust all over the place that sticks to everything. i was told to soak it in distilled water, but ive seen what water does to lcd's and touchscreens... they get milky white, and don't work. id rather dip it in isopropl alcohol, swish a few times and spit. and is to praying, i'm not very religious ;p

Well I do not really know about the trinity and for sure I wish that it has some water resistance, cause things like that happen all the time, but I had my Samsung WEp200, bluetooth in the washing machine inside my shirt's pocket for 1 and half hours in full wash, and after I took it out, it was still working......I am actually talking through that righ now....

i never thought it would survive. it did. after being submersed in water for 10 minutes... it had bits of corrosion on the board cause there is a small backup battery onboard, via high voltage soldering tacked to the board... anyway... thanks to that bettery, it almost killed everything for me.

i ran the main board under the spicket and scrubbed the everliving **** out of it. then i blew it off with an air compressor and let it sit for 2 days. i put it all back together with one screw left, and it booted up! sadly though, it had a kinda 3d effect cause the water got into the lcd layers.... so i pulled that apart( all the layers are on the back of the lcd starting with mirror, not the front). since i was working in a wood shop, it was a bit dusty :/ and i got a tid bit of dust on the layers and it looks nasty... ill get it later with latex gloves and alcohol... blew the layers off and dried them, and it looks great!
just so you know... the lcd is probally the most time consuming peice to take apart and put back together simply because it has 8 different layers that need to be cleaned, if water gets into em... lol..
guess the moral is, don't put your 600.00 phone in water.

I was in spain on a river heloing my son jumping from one rock to another when i heard a ""splash""... Ooppps that was my xperia that just dropped out of my pocket into about 4 meters water.
My parents instisted to pick it up while i was just thinking i would get another one from my company.
So i jumped into the water and pick it up...
I did wait about an half day and started it again and guess what? STILL WORKING.

Have you tried throwing it in lava?
as mentioned already, half a day is not long enough. i suggest you leave it off for a few more days. sure it is working now but while it's powered on, the moisture inside will slowly but surely build up corrosion at the solder joints and battery/power terminals. that' s when things start to go screwy.
take off the battery cover and battery, leave it open with they keyboard showing, wrap the phone in a thin towel or dry wash cloth and place it on top of a tv or something that generates constant heat. it helps to leave a fan blowing as it helps the air circulate and remove unwanted moisture.
leave it to dry for as long as you can live without your xperia. the longer it dries, the better your chances of things not going wrong in the future due to corrosion and whatnot.

Don't be so sure.
Three years ago I dropped my old W800i in the tub and it was fully submerged. I dried it off thoroughly then charged it up, on the assumption that the heat from charging would evaporate the water quickly. It worked, and it's still going.
well I am so sure. As I do work with a service guy and his job is to fix phones.... It's same like droping a cookie into the water and saying later - it looks as new.. It may look like new, but that's only what you can see. Inside the cookie isn't the same cookie as it was once before
That's called "selection bias," dude. The guy you work with gets the phones that did not survive the water. He never touches or sees all the other phones that survived.
There is at least one entire post talking about phones that survived various water submersions.
I have a Dell laptop that died for 3 days after being soaked with rain (2 years ago), and now continues to function after it dried, as well as the SE W800i.
That's 2 for 2. My own selection bias, but not bad at all.

yeah, we all know from 3th grade of elementary school, that water is a conductor. Which is what most people don't realize. What it does with the motherboard? Motherboard has special thin "skin", which protects it from the corosion or oxidization (damn how to spell that?). But once you put it in the water, the thin "skin" is destroyed and that's it.
So it may work now, next week.. But in the near future it'll die suddenly

That would make me sick. That is horrible. The first thing I did when I got my note is get a warranty from squaretrade and then get theftaware to catch the thief that trys to steal it.

If it still works, he should consider himself lucky. Things like is always makes me glad, I'm safe than sorry. I'm going to have to consider SquareTrade after I get my screen protector & case.
So we can assume now that the material used by Samsung is not the same in terms of strength and durability as Gorilla Glass.

Iphones are made out of crap Olephobic glass that they buy from 3rd world countries. It costs ≈200 USD to make a 16gb 4gs. Of course it's gonna get wrecked off 1 drop.

My recommendation get a semi hard rubber case takes a beating. I have never broke a screen in 25 years of having a phone. I did Have a Blackberry old Brick (big square ugly phone) I dropped it off a 40 ft roof and it bounced and the screen never broke......... Luck of the Irish I guess
Either way I have dropped alot of phones and the semi hard case seems to take the shock

Note hasn't even been out for that long so even if you don't have insure to cover it I'm pretty sure your still applicable to apply.
A device that big and heavy would really break easier than the smaller ones I guess.

i have seen many sites doing insurance for the phone break or drop via online site . so he could then apply on one those websites and report later thats broken ? heheh not sure as i don't think they gonna check the phone when he sign up with them.

It works perfect no body damage just the screen
Its not gorilla glass its just a thin piece of common glass. I am pretty sure it broke because it landed flat on the screen.
The problem with any glass screen isn't that they are "shatter" proof, but they are scratch resistant. Just about any piece of glass tinsel strength will resist a scratch (except for a diamond), but a sudden impact, especially on an edge will pretty much shatter it. The gorilla glass can flex, if you've seen the video, but I bet they never show anyone striking it on the edge. Even though in your event, it fell on the face, from the look of the photo, it landed on the edge first, even if just by a small amount.
I have a Dell Streak and the first thing I do before exiting my vehicle, is to make sure it is in the pouch before I get out of the car. My previous phones (HTC's) got dropped several times getting into/out of my car. I use to keep an otter box case on it, but they are so bulky, not many cases around for belt use.
I feel for you, but, I bet just about any large surface area piece of glass would do the same thing. Head over to the Dell Streak forum and you'll see a few broken glass streaks.

I was recently walking outside in the pouring rain with my OnePlus One. The crazy thing was that it was still functioning fine despite being practically hailed on. So I pulled out my M8 and decided to start recording. In this test I put the OnePlus One underwater multiple times and it came out fine each attempt. I didn't have any issues with the touch sensitivity, headphone jack, or even charging. It's pretty crazy quite honestly.

Beyond that - how did you find the screen in the outdoors? Just respond instinctively (e.g. "rainbows directly into my eyes", "it was OK", "use only in caves - dark ones even for them")
a lot of modern phones can do this. the way they are built with low tolerances gives them some water resistance. but the oneplus is not waterproof, and it has no water resistance certification. so dont try this at home with your phone. you will probably mess something up and the phone can start to act weird days later. it is a testament to the build quality though.

i'd say the phone at least has a nano coating. i always worried about my nexus 5 because i knew this day would come at some point where i'd get stuck in a storm with my phone in my pocket and not be able to pull over. look slike the opo will do just fine.

I once used my Nexus5 for almost an hour in pure rain. It got so extremely wet, you can't imagine. I already thought I'd had to buy a new one. Nope. It's still working.
(Yes I had to stay in the rain. I was at the army there.)
I was taking a shot REALLY next to the water when a wave hit a half of my phone and it was underwater (but still in my hands) for less than a second. Nothing happened. I don't think it's waterproof, but somehow it resist

Friend of mine actually broke his OPO this way after 2 days (biking in a heavy rain storm).
The speakers were completely soaked and couldn't play anything till they dried. Everything seemed fine after the phone dried but it couldn't charge any more thus rendering the phone useless.
So anyway be careful out there! You never know if your device is just as water resistant as in this video, my friend already had bad luck so don't jinx it haha.

can't be, all waterproof devices has rubber plugs on ports: audio, microusb, this doesn't.
here is a teardown for the OnePlus, doesn't seem to have rubber and protections against water in any part:

notice that the microusb port give complete access to water to electronics inside, it is either luck for sometime (what happened an hour later? is the OPO still working?) or it was treated with waterproof material.
then compare it with the Galaxy S5, where you can easily see rubber protections around parts that reach to the outside, camera, back, etc:

The correct term is water resistant, not proof. And I don't even believe it have water resistant nano coating until officially confirmed by OPO. And they would not neglect to advertise that feature if they spent money on it.
NO! this phone has no seals in it at all! you will kill your phone sooner or later. hell i had a s5 and still didnt put it under water. dont do it ppppppl
Hope your charging port doesn't corrode, especially since the opo doesn't have wireless charging... cool video though. Makes me feel like i dont have to baby my baby as much as i do!
I feel like the headline of this should be changed so that people who are just skimming the headlines won't get the wrong idea and drown their phones :/

I agree the title is misleading. The phone is not water proof, there's no gasket on the back cover, no nano coating, and no port covers. It's just glass fused to the midframe with a tightly fit back which makes somewhat resistant to water, but there's no ingress protection so no dunking your phone.
Well.. I've had the phone for less than 3 full days and already cracked the rear glass. Good thing I have insurance.. but it seems s7 is extremely fragile.
Phone dropped out of my pocket while sitting down. About 1 and 1/2 foot drop and hit the corner.. already cracked..

someone reported the same thing less than an hour after getting it. I feel they could have designed around that a bit better. Tempered glass always does terrible in corners. A couple of MM extra metal at the corners could probably save a bunch of phones.

i've got the rugged armor and it seems it should be fine, so i assume this would be ok too
This happens EVERY time a new phone is released. If anyone doesn't believe me, just go look at the other phones and you will see the same warnings when they were released. ALL of these kinds of phones are fragile to a certain degree. Anyone going without a good case is taking extra risk. Even a good case is no guarantee. Think of it this way, would you carry a laptop around without protection, drop it, and expect it not to eventually get damaged? When the next iPhone or S8 is released next year, other threads like this will show up early after their releases. If you drop it 2 inches or 2 feet...there is always a chance there will be damage. I don't think anyone drops it on purpose. That being the situation, I would think it would be a good move to put it in a case and at least improve the odds from the beginning.

Mind you I have never broken a phone this early. And I've had lots phones without cases. Notably note4, LG g2, g3, gs3. All which I dropped many times.

But it's not so bad and guy from video claims that back cover replacement costs ~30$ but anyway it's insurance problem. I wonder will water resistance still be present after such repair

An 18 inch drop did that?
I already opened a claim, I don't want any issues with waterproofing. But if Samsung repair says they can do it for cheaper I might go with that option.

Yep. I was sitting at dining table feeding my son. just slipped out of my pj pocket and hit the floor. That's why I'm surprised.

wow scary, first time ive heard of a phone ruined by being dropped now im definitely going to get a case and also place the phone inside 10 socks just in case

It's really not any more serious than chipping the paint or faux chrome on the edge bezels of previous Galaxy devices. I've owned the S3, S4 and S4 Mini. They look terrible after a year, even if you don't drop them. The S4 Mini is now over 2 years old and it's edge bezels look like the surface of the moon, and it's not from dropping it. That won't happen with the current generation of Galaxy devices.
At least the glass back on an S6 or S7 can be replaced to look like new. The edge bezels are part of the chassis. So, yeah, I'm fine with metal and glass.
i dropped my Xperia Z3 Compact a couple of times while standing, couple times onto wood floor, couple times onto tile. Never even scratched. Dropped it one day while at the pool onto this sort of uneven stone/sandstone kinda stuff from literally 2 or 3 INCHES, completely shattered the front glass. I mean total spiderweb destruction.
If just depends how you drop it and onto what surface.
Isn't it just bad luck either? I mean, I recently dropped my S6 and it also broke the glass (in the sense that the glass plate let loose and can now get dust under it). This was an innocent drop and it had falled quite a few times before already (before I was used to the slippery back of the thing) without any issues.
I've seen phones survive the most insane stuff only to get beaten by the bad luck of exactly hitting that part of the corner after a small drop.
Still sucks bigtime of course...
Lot of what's said is true. I still wonder how the waterproofing would be after repair.. of if the waterproofing would be OK with cracked glass.
I'm thinking the rear glass has no effect on the IP68 rating, when looking at the gs6 rear glass replacement video.
