I noticed my headphone icon appearing constantly and then realized this was a hardware and not software issue as there was no handset output. I am able to briefly get this working if I insert a headphone plug and then remove it. After a couple minutes the headset popup at the bottom of the screen pops up, flickers on and off as if the headphone is being removed and inserted and then the icon just stays on. I had a seemingly nontraumatic drop and I don't know if it started after that. Clearly a bad or loose switch but I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a simple fix.

Something happened to my wizard today, and I can't figure out what it may be. The gist of the problem is that I cannot use it as a phone though it's internal microphone and speaker. Everything works fine if I use my bluetooth headset or the external speaker in my car cradle, but the actual on-board phone speaker and microphone appears to not work. The phone hadn't been dropped but if someone calls me I cannot hear them and they cannot hear me unless I switch to bluetooth or plug it into the cradle with it's external speaker and microphone. I would write this off as hardware failure (and I still think that's what this is) but the other odd thing is that the phone will not let me switch to the speaker phone mode. If I press the 'speaker' button on the phone screen during conversation, it just doesn't do anything. Has anyone experienced something like this before? I'm hypothesizing that the problem may be with the headset jack which may be stuck in the open position, and thus the phone constantly thinks that's it's sitting in a cradle, but I don't know if there is anything I could do to fix that.
Your hypothesis was most likely the correct one. This happens to a lot of people. It's usually fixable by either plugging and unplugging a headphone set a bunch of times until the switch becomes unstuck or by taking a needle and inserting it in to the jack and move it around a bit until it becomes unstuck. playing an mp3 while you're doing this is an easy way to know when you get it unstuck.
Thanks for your reply. I've been trying to do that, but nothing seems to be helping. :-( I've already got a new phone on order from T-Mobile, but I still hope to fix this thing. It's a shame, I like the wizard.
as the title suggests, last night as i went to sleep i noticed my pnone lit up so i checked to see what happened and I've seen the headphones icon on..
This is very weird, as i havent used the headphones for a while, but most of all it is a BIG problem, since i cannot hear the ringtones or phone calls unless i plug headphones in..
Anybody has a solution or a workaround?
btw when i plug the headphones in, the voice speed dial page comes on... is this weird or not?????
Sounds like it could be the headphone jack itself that is faulty, I guess the first thing to try would be a hard reset and see if that helps. Otherwise trying to brush any kind of debris out of the port with a cotton bud may be a solution.
i thought it would be some dirt there as well, but how can just dirt enable the speakers?? shouldnt it be some kind of metal or water that it would cause the power to pass through? anyway i did try cleaning in with no results...
The headset jack acts as a switch, When the headset is plugged in, the sound is routed to the headset. The icon indicates that the phone sees the headset as inserted even when it is not. From a repair standpoint, I see this caused by an open short (broken solder joint or moisture) or even the head of the 3.5 pin broken off the end of the headset and still in the jack among other things.
Dirt would not cause the short. Double check the 3.5 pin itself as the start point.
Unfortunately, I think it will most likely be a hardware issue.
For what it is worth, the fact that the voice speed dial activates is not a surprise.
thanks guys for the answers...
the problem has been solved by itself... I am guessing it was just some moisture gathered there... humidity is intense where i live and i will be not surprised if it was that... so far is been ok... It was rather funny that the problem was triggered exactly at midnight, so I thought it could have been a virus...
anw take care
I had this issue in other devices and was able to cure it by inserting and removing the jack very quickly about 10x in succession.
I recently picked up my Iconia and I'm loving it so far. I have run into an issue with the headphone jack, however. When I plug in headphones the tab detects them. It switches off output to the esternal speakers and shows a little headset icon in the system tray.
When I remove the headphone plug from the jack I expect the tab to detect the change and re-route sound to the external speakers (while also removing the headset indicator for the system tray). It does not. I have to restart the tab in order to get sound to the external speakers.
Does anyone else have this problem (search turned up no helpful results)? Is there something obvious that I'm missing?
Thanks for the help.

I definitely don't see that here, however it will pause your music software when you unplug the headphones, by design.

I have had this happen. I just plugged it back in and then unplugged it again and it worked fine. No need to reboot it, but I did notice this myself and was thinking that the jack connector is not picking up the release. This would be an easy fix, but one would have to open up the tablet to get to the jack lol.
So for now I am unplugging it straight out instead of a slight bend out. If it sticks, just plug it back in and unplug it again, it will pick it up. However I think that this jack issue is a quality issue that might become serious down the road. My opinion is the same for rocker switches (volume control) as I have seen rocker switches give out very quickly, so I am not a fan of anything that has a rocker switch. But, as these things are good for about a year, might as well hope for the best as next year we will dump these for the next newest thing out there. I don't think these are meant to go for years at a time. Just my .02 cents worth.

Same over here. Had this problem once or twice. Just plug your headset back in, and out again. That fixed it for me.
Thanks for the replies.
same problem here. quite annoying when I unplug the headphone and don't notice until i am away from the headphones....
I have had an issue where I plug in my headphones but sound to the speakers is NOT cut off sometimes. This can be embarrasing if you are on a bus with headphones on thinking that you are quietly watching a movie when in fact everyone around you is being treated to the audio from the love scene from Mad Men that you are watching.
About a month ago I started having an issue where my audio cut out after a few minutes. I found that twisting the device would cause it to return, but pause the media. After the audio cuts out trying to raise the volume brings up the "loud audio is bad for hearing" message, so combined with the media pausing issue I concluded somehow the device thinks headphones are being connected. That's when the madness began.
First, I took off the back cover to see if that was part of the issue, audio continued to cut out.
Then I removed the usb port/headphone jack. The issue continues.
I removed the battery and main board, found no issues, put it back together and the issue continues.
I removed the pogo pins in case something crazy there was going on, but that did nothing.
I formated system/data/cache and reinstalled CM, and the issue continues.
The crazy thing is, bluetooth audio works fine, even though if you connect a headset, it takes precedence and cuts out the audio.
Any suggestions on how to fix this are welcome. Thank you
My S4 is randomly detecting a headphone (even though it's not there), the notification comes and goes. The port still works with no problems whatsoever but as the device's screen turns on every time a headphone is detected it's eating a lot of battery. Can the issue be singled out to be only the jack?
While the phone may have been exposed to rain (accidentally, as it never left my pocket), I've read that if it was water damage it would just show to be connected all the time, is that right? I tried to fix it with q-tips, plugging/unplugging the headphone with no sucess. I've noticed that plugging it in the charger makes the notification appear/reappear.
I'd say it's the headphone jack.
