Hey all. I've got a USCC Electrify M, bootloader unlocked and rooted running twrp 2.?.?> and I have a few questions.
First now that my boot loader is unlocked do I still need to flash using the retail edition files?
Next, If so do I need to use SafeStrap to do it? and is it ok to use safestrap with an unlocked bootloader?
Next, most of the roms are built from the Verizon rom, If I flash these will I break my phone due to bad build.prop, radio, and possibly other files like apn's and whatnot.
and last , if so can I use the stock files from the post at teamuscc to replace the files with the correct ones for USCC, either before or after flashing.
I know this is a tall order, but I'm relatively new to the whole safestrap bootloader thing coming from an Electrify 1 that I managed to unlock after the 2.3.5 unlock lockout, and not too familiar with the whole rom contents thing yet. Once I get a few answers to my other posts I may feel more comfortable just giving it a whirl. I do have a nandroid of where I am now, but don't want to screw anything up that can't be fixed with that.
Thanks for any info.
I am creating this thread because I feel that people are unaware that you can still root the Droid RAZR HD with the latest software.
It's actually very simple.
Step 1 - Download the Droid RAZR HD Utility - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307439
Step 2 - Boot into AP Fastboot (Power off phone, then hold the power button and volume up & down buttons - all 3 buttons simultaneously - scroll down to AP Fastboot then press the volume up key when AP Fastboot is highlighted to select it and boot into AP Fastboot)
Step 3 - Follow the instructions for the Droid RAZR HD Utility. Chose option 1. Your phone will be restored to 4.1.2 with the exploitable motochopper root.
Step 4 - Root with motochopper. I personally used the .zip not included with the Droid RAZR HD Utility - once you're on the exploitable version of 4.1.2 using the separate .zip or the Droid RAZR HD Utility to root shouldn't make a difference. Make sure you have the latest Motorola drivers and that you have USB debugging enabled before attempting to root.
Step 5- Download Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper from the Android Market. Use the protect root and then the temporarily unroot options.
Step 6 - Install the OTA update
Step 7 - Open Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and restore root. You should now be successfully rooted with the latest software.
***This worked flawlessly for me, however on the Droid RAZR HD Utility thread it says not to use it with the latest OTA update. I used it with the latest OTA update and ran into no problems. Use at your own risk.***
If you feel that I have left anything out or care to share your experience please reply.
I am new to the boards but I thought this thread would be very helpful.

Maybe I am asking a dumb question, but does this method allow you to unlock the bootloader?
I am on version 9.18.79.XT926 and was wondering if this method would work for me. Were you on the same version or a different one?
Rooting and unlocking are two separate processes. If you're on 9.18.79, you currently can't unlock. Temporarily downgrading the software version doesn't change that. Sorry.

the razr maxx hd on 9.20.1 is rootable via the the motochopper; however, a "factory-reset" prior to the rooting will be necessary. that necessarily means, back-up first as all will be wiped out.

For real? I've been doing a lot of reading a missing around trying to figure out if it's possible for me to install roms. This is the first place in actually found where it is no.
So at the end of the day if you're on the latest ota and I've got root going but I can't get a recovery installed. Is that the limitation or what's considered normal?

You can use SafeStrap to flash SafeStrap compatible ROMs and make backups. SafeStrap is based off of TWRP but it doesn't actually replace your stock recovery (since you have a locked bootloader).
Sounds like good news.
It looks like I have the phone itself actually rooted using motochopper however I'm not able to get safe strap 100% working. Installs and then it says that installed the recovery however when you try to reboot into recovery it doesn't prompt you with the menu.
What's interesting to me is that I can use other programs that require root access far as I can tell with no issue, root checker shows root is available as well. Trying to reboot into recovery though does not give me the safety strap splash screen to choose any kind of recovery option. Just rolls into DROID...
Running OTA update at 9.18.79.

To get into SS, you just need to boot normally. SS doesn't replace the stock recovery, so if you try to boot into recovery, you'll just get the stock menu. If you boot normally, then you should get the options to go into recovery or boot normally. If you don't get the two buttons at the bottom of the screen, then I would try removing and re-installing SS.
Thanks
Thanks for this thread, all. The guidance in this thread helped me find my way to root on my 9.20.1 XT926 phone.

I am in the first step of restoring my phone, but when I'm in the process of going through the first option in the utility, it is stuck on
"writing 'system'" a ways down the page, it started out working fine, but now is hanging on this and has been for about 20 mins, is this normal?
That's not normal, there is an updated utility in the development forum version 1.3+ there are also links to the new root method in that post if your bootloader is locked.
If your bootloader is not locked the utility and root in this thread should be working.

Brilliant i just got a MAXX HD imported from the US ran the update yesterday and now i'm just finding out that as a result of the update i can no longer unlock the bootloader which puts a stop to my plans of being on android 4.3. Is there really no other way ? Maybe theres a chance my bootloader was already unlocked - how would i check ?
There is no way to unlock anymore. If you were planning on going custom why even take the other? This is why people have to check before getting willy nilly with random ota's that don't do anything other then lock your phone generally. To check bootloader status boot into fastboot it'll either say locked or unlocked.

It says locked so i'm definately stuck with it unfortunately.
I installed the update thinking it would be a better comparison for when i did go custom but never in a million years imagined it would lock anything. They really should include a disclaimer with these updates. I've been using android devices for years and have never encountered anything like this update - they've always been irreversible from my experience.
I've seen miracles performed on android though so this cant be the end. It just cant be !
Good evening all, after experimenting on my RW XT1049 MotoX a bit, I have successfully rooted, installed Safestrap (laymans term: dual boot), installed a custom ROM, and enabled full recovery on the phone. I also was able to UNDO all this for a return to complete stock.
All steps below are not condoned by republic wireless in any way, and are in violation of your agreement with them. You will immediately void your phones warranty, and your agreement with republic wireless. That said... we're tinkerers, its what we do. Dont blame me, republic wireless, or my dog for anything that bricks, breaks, or exploded. If nuclear war starts because of your actions, its not Republics fault.
All credit goes to Hashcode for safestrap, and jCase for root. All files are located in respective links out of respect for them. If you dont know how to use adb, this guide is not for you.
Now that all thats said, for those not familiar with Safestrap, it is a custom recovery for phones with a locked bootloader, it enables "dual booting" of your phone, meaning that you can keep the stock RW rom (which we now have a raw image of) in your stock ROM slot, but also create up to 4 additional ROM slots for multi booting. I personally have the stock slot which i leave completely alone, a daily custom ROM in slot 1, and an experimental ROM in slot 2.
Now, as to how to do this. You need to complete five steps
Do a complete stock restore of your device using RSDLITE
http://theunlockr.com/2013/11/09/unroot-moto-x-all-versions/
A) Root using RockMyMoto
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509590
B) Install the Tmobile XT1053 Safestrap
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/104161-recovery-locked-safestrap-recovery-v365-2013-11-13/
C) Perform an immediate back up of your stock rom slot, and get it off your phone as a backup
D) Create as many ROM slots as you like
E) Install the stock ROM back to one of your new ROM slots (NOT STOCK SLOT) and tinker, modify, and mess with it until your hearts content, knowing that you cant brick the device anymore, and you will always have your stock ROM in the STOCK slot.
0) So you learn how, and can do it if you brick your device during this process, do a complete stock restore of your device using the stock image, and RSDlite. If you dont do this, and try to do any of the following steps on an existing cluttered stock rom, i offer no guarantees of any kind
A) Rooting
RockMyMoto is designed for MotoXs that have recieved the Camera update, patching PwnMyMoto. If you are unsure of your firmware, try PwnMyMoto first.
First step is to install Cydia Impactor, by Saurik. http://www.cydiaimpactor.com/ This is required. You will also need adb installed and working, and be comfortable with the command line. Your phone must be on the same network as your PC.
Figure out the ip address of your phone:
Quote:
adb shell getprop dhcp.wlan0.ipaddress
unzip RockMyMoto-{version}.zip and push the exploit and su to /sdcard/:
Quote:
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push RockMyMoto.jar /sdcard/
Run Impactor and select "# start telnetd as system on port 2222", then hit start.
Once the process is complete, run telnet:
Quote:
telnet {your phone's ipaddress} 2222
Run the exploit through telnet
Quote:
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
The exploit will tell you to use adb to reboot:
Quote:
adb reboot
Run the exploit through telnet for the second time, it will reboot on it's own:
Quote:
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Run the exploit through telnet for the third time, it will not reboot:
Quote:
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Wait 0-60 seconds, for su to install, then install SuperSu from the market.
Enjoy!
B) Installing Safestrap
HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP?
Be Rooted (Look for PWNMYMOTO/RockMyMoto by JCase):
RockMyMoto: http://rootzwiki.com...-the-first-ota/
PwnMyMoto: http://rootzwiki.com...-miniultramaxx/
Make sure in "Settings" -> "Security" you have "Unknown Sources" checked
Download the Safestrap APK to your device
Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click "Install".
(If updating from an existing Safestrap you might be warned that this will over-write the existing installation. Click the "Yes" equivalent to this message.)
Once installed, open up the Safestrap application as you would any other app.
Reboot into the Write-Protect Off (recovery) Android OS via the safestrap app (if this doesnt show up, you may still be in Write-Protect-Off from the last reboot when you rooted)
Agree to the disclaimer that you won't try to sue me and hunt me down with a rifle if you manage to break your phone..
Then use the "Install Recovery" button. You should see the current version down in the lower left corner of the window. And the "Status:" should say "Installed" when you're done.
From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
That's it for the installation! Read below for a brief overview of Safestrap Recovery v3.x
C) Backup, this is self explanatory. If you dont know how to do a TWRP backup, and you've gotten this far, im amazed nuclear war hasnt started
D) Creating Custom ROM slots
Reboot your phone, select recovery
Select boot options
Select ROM slot 1
What size of /data slot should I make? 1GB for testing, 2GB as a small daily ROM and 3GB for a decent heavy use daily ROM.
Let it finish
Return to Recovery main menu
choose restore
restore your recent backup to ROM Slot 1
Reboot
Congratulations, you now have a safestrapped device. Mess with your ROM to your hearts content.
Thanks for this. RW user here.
I used the toolkit here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477132
It made rooting idiot proof for me. Any good custom Roms working with RW yet? And can I install modded system apps as a zip in the recovery? (I'm addicted to team blackouts clear apps).
My thanks again.

LOL oh sure.....I did the old ADB method. I haven't rooted anything in like 2 years. Took me forever. Wish I saw your post!
Oh, now that I have TB installed, should I freeze the update so I don't get KitKat until I have this all figured out? Not that it'll be a rush, since RW says "early 2014"....but I might as well if you think I should freeze it just in case.
Does any of this allow for use of a SIM from a carrier other than Republic? I have a buddy looking for an occasional use phone that will be used both here in the US, but also when visiting family in Romania.. he would like to be able to use a romainian SIM while traveling.
Great guide, but it probably should be in the General folder rather than the Original Development....I'm guessing an admin will move it!
Thanks for putting this together...I was just debating getting one of these!
Republic as Sprint uses CDMA for cell-network. The SIM in these phones are for LTE connectivity for data only. And Republic service is for US residents only. (Tho if you travel, as long as you have WiFi everything is gravy, not sure how roaming over there would work though.)
Wrong section. @The-Hulk or another admin please move this thread when you get a chance.

I haven't flashed anything yet. I wanted to make sure that I would be able to complete the unroot method using RSD lite before I tried anything else. As far as I can tell, I've found the correct download for the Republic Moto x and I'm going to give it a shot. I'm definitely no expert and I have very limited knowledge about the details of WHY all this stuff works, but I've been successful in rooting and modifying many different phones and tablets (of varying degrees of difficulty) by just carefully and thoroughly studying instructions and forums and following the instructions. Any advice that I could get would be greatly appreciated
Nobody flashes roms on a moto x. A rooted device is not an unlocked device. A rooted locked device doesn't accept a non stock kernel. You can flash like 2 roms now and they are basically just cleaned up stock roms. Here's what you do with a rooted Moto x. You install xposed. You install gravity box. This let's you install a reboot menu, maybe change around some settings which stock roms don't let you, status bar stuff, for example. You install ad blocking software. That's pretty much it.
Think of the roms you've installed. They're basically roms that get rid of touchwiz or sense, and bring it closer to stock. We already have stock. Without a kernel, which requires an unlocked bootloader, there's no over clocking.

Thank you for clearing this up, very helpful. Was wondering if anyone had a rough list of which programs(visible or not) that are safe to remove after obtaining root. For example, using the un-install(system apps) feature in Titanium Backup.
Also, how much memory do you think the Stock Rom slot is taking. I feel just so low on memory when installing a certain number of apps. Wondering if I should ditch the custom rom slots and simply use the main stock-ROM. Just redo this guide's restore feature if I happen to f**k anything up. Any examples of what other are doing are much appreciated.

I just tried to restore My RW after a bootloop happened on my safestrap image. It wouldn't allow me to get to safe straps boot screen. Tried the restore and ever other option on the fast boot screen. Finally I tried the unroot restore with the stock RW image. Followed the steps. It failed at step 7. Any advice?
I had the same problem you might to download fastboot and clear the cache or even user data(this will usually wipe everything). If all else fails you will probably need to start from scratch with the beginning of this guide.

Anyone know a way to make root in Moto X Play it work?
Or can you use the method of CF-Root Moto X (2014)?

No TWRP/Root available as of yet. Give it some time, I guarantee you that XDA will basically be the first place it's posted when it happens. Keep in mind that the phone is just starting to roll out, but not in the US so it might take a while longer for somebody to get on it.

Even still, unless you REALLY screw something up, most of the time you can get away with it. (not sure how Moto X devices show the unlocked bootloader status and such).

Curious how developers figure out how to root. Is there something that's needed (besides having the phone, obviously), do we need kernel images from Motorola?

I don't have the device, so I won't be making a recovery for it, but it's not a particularly difficult process to make one. It took me around an hour to port TWRP to the 2015 Moto G, and it should be similar for this device. You can use a prebuilt kernel if sources are not available, but I think the 2015 Moto G kernel will actually work on this device. Moto will be releasing the proper kernel sources for this device soon anyway.
You just need to create a device tree and compile a recovery (such as TWRP). The recovery device tree doesn't need to be very thorough (the way ROM device trees are). It just needs to specify information about partition names and locations and kernel boot parameters etc. It should be a trivial modification to make my 2015 Moto G TWRP device tree work on this device.
Once you have a working recovery, just flash SuperSU with it and you'll be rooted.

A quick glance through the other Moto forums here on XDA would give us a good clue. I'm too tired to check at the moment, but if nobody else does by the time I wake up, I'll check then.
Good News! My Moto x play is rooted with the Moto G 2015 method.
Below process we did and it worked:
1- Through the forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/orig-development/twrp-twrp-moto-g-2015-t3170537
I downloaded "TWRP-osprey-2.8.7-test1.img"
2 UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip downloaded at: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
[Copy to your internal SDcard]
3 Place your Moto-x in fastboot mode [Power + Vol. down]
3- install TWRP-osprey-2.8.7-test1.img with the command: fastboot boot TWRP-osprey-2.8.7-test1.img
[Installation is temporary, I tried to permanently install but did not work].
4. The recovery will open automatically, browse to the location where you saved the SuperSU and flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
5. Restart.
I did this procedure and managed to get root, I'm not responsible for any damage caused to your phone.
Did you have to unlock bootloader before installing it? On my phone, I have an unlocked bootloader and it did work but perhaps people would be interested in trying it with a locked bootloader (less risk of voiding the warranty).

My bootloader is also unlocked.
I believe you can not do without unlocking the OEM. since it would not be possible to install recovery.
If someone is on a locked bootloader and want to test, we can see if it works. But I believe that is not possible.
I'll gladly test it with a locked bootloader when I get home in a few hours, if it hasn't already been tested by then.
Just tried it with locked bootloader, no joy. Device downloads the boot.IMG but errors booting it and just stays in bootloader mode. Guessing needs the bootloader unlocking first.

Good to know. Thanks @CharlesW123 for checking!
Anybody know if we are able to flash a logo to replace the unlocked bootloader warning on the X Play yet?

Yep the method shown here does work on the Moto X Play, you will get back to the normal boot logo.
has anyone tested installing Xposed after rooting yet? I'm assuming the same procedure should work (fastboot boot recovery.img > flash xposed.zip)?

The Xposed is a .zip file, you need to install the TWRP via flash.
But still I am not the courage to try. I have no backup ROM error.
I will hit the point immidiately:we still cannot root our droid turbo 2,or unlock Bl now.It ,you know. But that it what we get for buying a Verizon phone. But my question is:have we try all the way?Does anyone try to use adb fastboot oem unlock?Or contact Verizon and ask what the hell was put into our phone(i know it vendors file, but cant mod it)??
So,dear turbo lover ,please try all the way before teardown.I know it hard, but for our phone, let get you off!!!
P/s:Event the first droid turbo(aslo from Verizon)can be uunlocked?WHY CANT WE!!!!!!!!!!!
