Hi Everyone,
I have some experience of unlocking, rooting , flashing custom roms etc. but this issue has me really stumped and searching for the past couple of hours only led me to 1thread with a similar issue and no solutions. So here it is:
stock (4.3) N4 stuck in boot loop.
Fastboot oem unlock will not survive reboots, so I am unable to flash stock image back on my device.
Please Help with a solution to get this phone working again!
History:
Last night I turned on my wife's N4 (Android 4.3 stock) and put it on charge and walked away. This morning I found it is stuck on the "X" boot screen and red hot. I powered down, let it cool for 1/2 hour and then fully charged it (while off).
It will no longer boot, sticking on the "X" screen.
Booting into fastboot and choosing recovery leads me to android with red "!".
This phone has never been rooted, unlocked, custom recovery or custom ROM. ( I have however done all of this to my other N4)
Attempts:
Decided to wipe it and reisntall stock 4.3, lots of errors because it is locked.
So 1st step is to unlock, however whenever I do fastboot oem unlock I get the prompt about unlock and YES/ NO. I select YES and it successful erases and report LOCK STATE - UNLOCKED in red.
I reboot the phone into fastboot and LOCK STATE - ENABLED in green. Now stuck on what to do next.
(Secure boot - enabled).
Many thanks in advance.
Go into the stock recovery and do a factory reset. Go into the bootloader, choose Recovery Mode. When the dead android/red triangle comes up, hold power and tap volume up. Then select wipe data/factory reset.

Sorry, I re-read and followed your instructions :good:. I went pass the red "!" and did the wipe data / factory reset.
I rebooted into fastboot and issued
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
LOCK STATE- unlocked
I then rebooted again into fastboot
LOCK STATE- enabled :crying:
update:
I see errors after the wipe cache (successful)
E:failed to mount / cache (Invalid argument)
then lots of errors of failure to mount other cache sub directories and flies.

the android with the red "!" IS the stock recovery.
Summary so far:
N4 (stock) stuck at "X" screen.
booting into recovery and doing factory wipe + reset formats ok (but results in errors mounting cache)
"fastboot oem unlock" will unlock the phone for next reboot (google logo + unlock symbol) where it will then hang.
Subsequent reboots the device is locked (hang at Google screen withOUT unlock symbol).
Booting into Fastboot the device is locked again.
More help gratefully received.

it sounds like you might have an issue with the storage. at least when the storage goes bad, it follows the same symptoms. usually when the storage goes, people just find their device on X. if unlocking the device results to going back to locked after a reboot, it sounds like its actually not clearing the storage of the device, which would happen if the storage went back.

Thank you. I was reaching the same conclusion of a hardware issue. I'll arrange a warranty repair. I have 3 days left on the Warranty....

Let m know if there is anything else I can try before it goes back.....:fingers-crossed:
Hello everyone,
a few days ago my phone restarted. I didn't try to install a custom rom or something.. It just keeps starting up.
So I went into recovery mode and wiped the cache etc.. The phone starts but after starting the apps it is in a bootloop again.
It has something to do with my broken fingerprint scan I think because I saw it earlier in this forum with that problem too.
Is there any way to fix this ? I Can go into bootloader but oem unlocking and advanced reboot isn't on...
Hopefully someone can help me!

If you're able to boot into bootloader, try to factory reset and see if you can boot up(all data is gone!). If not, the qfil method is the next step to flash cos from scratch.

Ok i will try this! Thanks for the quick reply btw !
In step 2 I need to turn on USB debugging. How can I do this if my phone can't startup? Normally you need to go to developer options. But it is not possibly now..
This worked for me ! Thanks for the help !

You can select factory reset by pressing the volume button . Factory reset will come up. Select by pressing power button and press again to wipe.

Very strange, unless it only shows up if you enable developer options before.

Exactly same problem after update, no way to factory reset phone, developer option was unlocked

you are not alone...?
Same issue on one I have my hands on. This could get interesting.
From fastboot can anything be pushed/flashed like a previous actually functional firmware? Is there other specific software to do so? Only got my hands on the defective non functional device today but I'm planning and scheming a fix if possible.
One thing is really interesting. Why only after this update???? Why not after update from 6 to 7 then 7 to 7.1 and after 7.1 to 8.0. I think Google or Huawei is cheating us and forcing us to buy Google pixel.
I also have this issue (I'm using a nexus 5x, but this thread is the closest to my issue I've found), but it came incrementally. First, I started getting reboots every 20m or so, while doing normal phone things (reading, mostly). Then it started getting into bootloops that were 2-3 boots long, and would then work normally for the 20m mentioned above. I tried a factory reset, but it just got worse, and now either reboots on the Google logo or during the Android animation. My fastboot menu only has the regular "Start" as green. The only other options are Restart Bootloader, in red, and Recovery mode, also in red. Power off is there, obviously, but that's it. It started happening yesterday, and worsened to its current point within only a few hours.
Well. I have just joined the club. What is going on with that?
Happened to me today and I was using the latest build of SuperXE 6P.
Guys! lol
1. Dev options in ROM is same old. Settings/about and tap build 10 times to see count down to developer. Back to settings. In there for OEM unlock
2. Factory reset can be done any number of ways.
a. In ROM. Settings/backup and reset/factory reset.
b. From anywhere, hold power+volume down until you see the bootloader. There are 2 possible screens in there. One of them has factory reset. Beware! From here it will likely wipe your sdcard!
c. From recovery. You can get there from bootloader. You can also flash an up to date recovery image from bootloader.
The rest of your recovery process should be provided by the ROM thread by which you will get your choice of ROM.
Make sure you have access to a PC with adb. You will likely need to flash a vendor image
My device is only recognized in fastboot mode. No ADB, no recovery. Tried to uninstall and manually install latest USB drivers, it didn't work. My Nexus is now just stucked in a bootloop. I even tried to flash factory images to no avail. Really don't know what to do...
FYI I have no screen in bootloader allowing me to factory reset: only Start/Reboot/Reboot bootloader/Barcodes, as others stated above.
Hi friends,
Need urgent help. My phone is on bootloop it is showing up to the animated logo then Black screen.
Is there any way to recover the data?
The actual problem occurred while streaming video through Telegram app & the phone storage was almost full.
It was running on oreo 8.1 with Dec security patch
Phone 100% stock no modifications done & never unlocked the bootloader.

Yes. But it is not getting switched off. It is getting restated. I can access bootloader screen & recovery mode by pressing both power & volume down for few seconds.

Try to wipe cache only within recovery mode. There's less you can do to get your data off the phone without unlocked bootloader.

Thanks for the reply. Tried it still same. Lost the hope of getting the data back. I think the only option left is to format all the data. Is there any chance of getting atleast 80% data using any recovey apps after formatting? Can you suggest some?

Hi, my sister somehow forgot the graphical key, so phone is now locked. of course it is not a stolen phone , i do keep all the documents proving that it was bought.
So, all the articles point me to use TWRP recovery or similar, but to flash the twrp onto phone i first need to enable USB debugging and unlock bootloader but since phone is locked i can't get to developer setting ....
So, any solution to this? Any help greatly appreciated!
p.s. tried flashing TwRP and aroma zips from microsd flash with no success ( permission error = blocked bootloader?)
u need to unlock bootloader first and if data recovery is avoidable the simply reset device via booting into recovery via power + volume down button
u can simply unlock bootloader via asus official unlock tool without using pc,just a apk to install and use

but some people say it is possible to just do wipe data operation to unlock graphical key. I don't understand why it doesn't work in my case..
Since Asus stock rom is encrypted.. .there could be hardly any way to recovery data without twrp or only using phone system.
