Will google ever fix the camera app? :/ - Nexus 6 General

Why is it so hard for google to fix the camera app and the camera quality issues that plague android? I was expecting them to fix it with the 5.1 update , but no luck, if you ask apple fans why they think the iphone is superior , the only thing they have going for them is camera quality. All I'm asking is that they reduce the time it takes to take a HDR+ picture , because without HDR+ the nexus 6 camera is kinda meh, implement an auto HDR+ mode, let us actually use burst mode, timelapse, that's pretty much it.... I don't want to install 3 different camera apps to get features that should be stock ...

Totally agree, nexus 6 is finally a google phone with a good sensor and lens, and they ruin it with a camera app stuck in 2012.
Things missing:
- 60 fps video
- auto HDR
- HDR Video
- burst mode
- slow motion
- manual settings for ISO and shutter speed
- touch focus & manual focus during videos
- stutter free zoom
- stereo sound recording

I hear you I'm not very pleased with the situation either. I did download a program just for burst mode (Perfectly Clear) something that was standard on my galaxy S3 2 + years ago. The focus hunting in video mode is infuriating also.
I also agree about the iPhone. I was looking through my friend's new iPhone 6 and was playing with apps and camera like lame, lame, lame, wow this camera app is nice and slow mo!
Sent from my Nexus 6

I want a quick picture may use the camera app.
I do not have the time or care enough about taking pictures to learn what half the terms mean.
Take a picture, capture a moment .... looks good enough to me.
Really if they had Auto HDR .... whatever that is I can not see me using it.
Just go with the defaults.
If anything I never go for the highest resolution do not want to fill my internal memory or cloud storage with pictures.
Now I read many threads where people that want to take professional looking pictures just buy a third party app, think Camera 2 was recommended.
The iPhone Camera app maybe better but with Android you are free to try other apps.

The problem is the 3rd party apps suck at doing it (HDR, Burst, etc) and some excel at one thing so you end up having 4 camera apps that don't do what the iPhone camera does pretty well in one app. It is not like you can't run other camera apps on your iPhone either!
Don't be an Android fanboi/apologist please. Good grief!

I don't think its being an android fanboy or apologist to say a person has a differing opinion than yours. I use HDR on my N6 ALL THE TIME.
Quality is fine for me. I'm not looking to become some great camera phone photographer. I just want to capture a quick moment. I've used quite a few camera apps and, in the end, I find it doesn't matter to me. It all looks good to me.
Point, shoot, upload... MAYBE stream through Chromecast for family. You prefer a better camera set of functions, others, including myself, think the camera is just fine because it fits what we do with our cameras.
It not like anyone is slinging mud at you and telling you to go get an iPhone.. Don't be that guy that throws mud because someone has a differing opinion than you.

So just to be clear... your opinion is the camera app is "good enough" and we all should be fine with that? Oh well then O.K. No reason to improve it then. What's next?
Edit: YOU HAVE A NOTE 4??? Get the f*** out of here you are not using Google camera!!! If I had a Note 4 I would not be complaining either! It arguably takes better pictures than the iPhone :good:

u do realize u can download the google camera from the play store right? Also its just a phone with a camera. you want quality pics buy a real camera. Gotta love the complainers over something very small. There is nothing wrong with the camera. Get real. Jeez

Auto HDR would also help people who don't want to spend time learning to take pictures.
I think we need an easy to use and fast camera app, which also adds options for those who want to get the best out of the camera. The new Lumia Camera 5 is doing this pretty good i think.

Title of thread: Will google ever fix the camera app
People agree it sucks. It runs from acceptable to horrendous. We are labeled complainers? Why is it so much to ask that Google has a "good" camera by default then if I want manual controls or other features I use another app?
Yes, if I want to take a lot of good pictures I will break out my DSLR but functionally my Galaxy S3 was better than what came in my Nexus 6.

Its very simple to them having a acceptable os running would be far more important than any apks. You cant sit there and tell me u rather have a good camera over the os. If so thats a stupid thought. A camera app can be fixed very easily by downloading another from the playstore. So again this small issue that people are having with the google camera is what it is A SMALL ISSUE.

Not quite sure i agree with all the people saying " you can just download another app " ?? you can't
Not if you want 120fps slow motion

Far from a fan boy. Just getting ridiculous with people complaining about a non issue. How is the camera lacking features when it was provided just recently? the google camera is new back in april 2014. So no sure what u mean by poor and lacking features. So apparently because it was given to us in April 2014 means its perfect? LOL
HTC, Samsung , Sony, OnePlus ( Oneplus btw has the same damn sensor so its 100% capable ) ... All of their Android devices offer :
60-fps
Slow motion
HDR in video
better autofocus while recording video
The list is actually pretty long from whats lacking on the Nexus camera app, sorry but if you can't see that , you're straight up blind, either physically or mentally

EVO's camera is garbage

Seriously, how can they call this an 8MP camera?
No matter what menu settings, location, lighting I choose MOST of the pics always come out looking like garbage. Really fuzzy.
No wonder Droid X and iPhone's camera destroyed this in the tests.
And the camcorder is another good joke from HTC. 720p video recording? Really? Total joke.
What kind of magical settings do you people use to make it look better?
Maybe I will hire a professional photographer/lighting specialist to follow me all over 24/7 just in case I need to take some decent pics with this damn thing.

It's the software that comes with it I've tried other camera software like camera pro it snaps fast like really fast. Just that the software needs to be updated for the HTC EVO. Far as stock camera video its the software encoding sucks. The hardware is great just finding the right software or somebody develops one. Seems as if all the devs are busy rooting and tweaking the roms that HTC and Google should of done before even releasing software. Then maybe the devs can focus on making apps for us. Maybe somebody will soon develop better camera and video app that really take advantage of this great camera.

Are you focusing the camera? Press and hold on the screen in the area you want to focus and it will focus and snap the picture. The pictures are pretty good (not DSLR quality or anything, but much better than most/all phones).

Ok, two things to point out here
1. The Droid X and iPhone did not destroy the Evo in terms of camera. Camcorder wise yes, but not the camera itself. That's working just fine, and I haven't heard too many complaints about the camera itself. Most cell phone cameras at this level produce similar results.
2. Yes, the video quality does suck ass, but its been made a whole lot better here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711808. My evo is recording at 13 mbps in h.264, and the results are fantastic. We shouldn't have to be doing this, but at least its working.
It's a phone.

Agreed. The camera sucks.. I think it's 8 in dog megapixels.
Ahh, ignorance is bliss!
Megapixels =/= photo quality directly. Mega pixel = 1 million pixels. 8 MP = 8 million pixels. There is much more than just "MP" when comparing cameras silly..
Go get educated, then come back

Very true. Tons of megapixels really only help when you want to get huge prints. The two most important parts of a camera in my opinion are the image sensor and the lens, neither of which are going to be that great on any phone camera. I think the pictures the Evo takes are pretty good for a phone.
The evo camera isn't amazing... but if you need quality pictures, DON'T RELY ON YOUR PHONE. It's a ****ing phone! Get yourself a point and shoot or a DSLR.
Guys guys think about it phone cameras has came a long way from back in the early days. Soon these cameras will take the place of point and shoot. If you want better get DSLR. I have seen some great
Photos around the forum. The camera in this EVO are capable of taking great photos plus EVO has the processor to handle it more than what a point and shoot has. Soon cell phones will be getting dual cores. But until then it is this whack stock software that is processing the photos. Take the iPhone 5mp camera making the EVO picture look bad because they have a great camera software. Only if somebody can write a better camera app if I could code that would of been the first app I would of made. That and a better video conferencing app.

As someone who has owned and used both the iPhone 4 and the Evo (returned my iP4 for the Evo), I can confidently say that the iP4's camera does indeed destroy the one on the Evo. I love my Evo and wouldn't switch back if you paid me, but the cameras aren't even in the same league.
The Evo takes photos which are on-par with the smartphones we've all seen and used over the last few years. They're okay. You can put the pics up on your website, etc., but I wouldn't rely on the Evo for anything particularly important. The iP4's camera, on the other hand, is just amazing. It can hold its own against any of the typical $200 - $300 non-DSLR cameras on the market and, therefore, can effectively be your everyday, walking around camera.
The best summary I can give is that the Evo's camera is a good to okay camera -- for a cell phone. The iP4's camera is a very good camera -- period.

Are you judging the fuzzy picture at first glance? By that I mean preview after your shot or in gallery? Because sometimes the picture if you don't zoom in it can look really fuzzy and then when you zoom in a title bit it corrects the picture quality and be very clear. Also download them to your pc and see how they actually turn out. You might be surprised. I am an avid amateur photographer so I use DSLR to shoot pictures. In good light the camera and software combo isn't bad. It has horrible low light capability but then again its a phone camera. And as many people said a few tweak here and there with the software and it will make a big difference. I know when they tweaked the HTC HD2 phone I had it made a world of difference. I know it will happen on this phone too. We have to let some get past the linpacks and quadrant scores for a little while before cameras become the hot topic
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
the pictures aren't the greatest but i have gotten some really good ones. I attached a few. People need to quit complaining though, it's a damn phone and the quality isn't half bad, if we can make it better then so be it but it's good as it is. These are from when i took my lil sisters to the zoo we were at the butterfly garden. I didn't edit these at all and they look even better on my phone
Its inferior to other devices so actually we should complain. Sure you can get nice shots but its anything but automatic.
I don't think it's that bad. Took this picture a month ago.
I agree on both sides here...the camera is pretty decent, but I do believe software improvements can and should be made.
Hasn't it been posted here that the camera manufacturer is the same as the ip4's?

They can call it an 8MP camera because it IS an 8MP sensor that produces a photograph that contains 8 million pixels.

Exactly. I would have to say that's one of the reasons for the "megapixels aren't everything" argument. It's just a description of how many pixels the sensor can produce like you said.
If you have a bigger sensor (which is difficult in a cellphone camera obviously) like in a DSLR, you get bigger pixels. I freakin' love my new Canon Rebel T2i I just bought last week!

[Q] A Suggestion!?

Well I'm not a developer myself, but I was thinking that someone should make a (app/rom/ ADD A FEATURE) where there is zero shutter lag technology like the mt 4g slide. Idk if its possible, but its just a suggestion.
What do you think?
You can do that in your camera settings on gingerbread ROM's. It doesnt focus or anything, just takes an instant picture, still decent quality though.

Yes me too, thanks for the reponse, I wish it will come with.
Doubt it, think only the iphone 4s/5 have video stabilization, and of course the new lumia 920.
Digital image stabilization is a gimmick and rarely works well. From seeing video comparisons, it basically crops the image in order to be able to compensate for the excessive movement, so the quality suffers.
Even if the stock app doesn't have digital image stabilization I'm sure it won't be long before the market app ICS+ Camera works on 4.2 (if it doesn't already already). You can just toggle stabilization in the settings.

ICS and Jellybean (4.12) has image stabilization so I don't see why they would remove the feature. So I'm going to say "yes" it will have it.
Someone asked if there was a better way of doing image stabilization and the answer is yes. The new Nokia 920 (Windows 8 phone) has optical image stabilization (the lens itself moves to compensate for any shaking). Apparently it's fantastic.
It's the same tech that's been in camcorders and camera for years. Just coming to phones now. According to the Engadget Mobile guys LG is working on their own optical image stabilization system but it's not ready yet.

Wow 200gb? If you were going to record that excessively, you should have used a dedicated camcorder, especially since you were traveling.

In case anyone is still looking for an answer it does not appear to support image stabilization. It is not in the options for the camera app, but I decided to go one step further and check the API.
Camera.Parameter.isVideoStabilizationSupported() on my Nexus 4 returns false. So I believe this is a definitive no.

I dont really take pictures in my house, I take them when out and about. Its just not got the resolution to be able to resolve objects more than 50ft away in any detail. As I said it takes nice 'scenes', but for example, at a zoo its useless, because animal invariably aren't close to you. Its useless at motor sport events because it cant resolve the cars unless you are very close to them. I took a few shot at a recent event with the One, and a few with the Nexus 10 as a comparison, and it was the N10 that gave me the best single shot!
It does work as a social media camera, which is I suppose what HTC said all along, but lets not be fanboys here, it has big limitations. Most of the shots on this site that are showing off its abilities are macros, which are nice, but frankly any phone can do that, and I was taking better ones with my N95!

I assure you I'm not being a fanboy.
Not the best but what I use to take real pictures. You know, like ones at the zoo. Maybe you should pick something like this up if you want to shoot events.

Like most people I just want a simple point and shoot device, i dont care enough or need a $600 camera. However I do want one that takes pictures that are worthwhile having.
I wouldn't mind it only being as good as an average phone for these type of shots, but the fact that its worse than a tablet, or even an old phone is inexcusable. The fact is pretty much every 8MP camera phone takes better shots in these situations.

g3 camera has very littles camera modes and options

got the g3 yesterday and i have the g2, looking at the g3 camera ui and settings and options. there are very little to none, the g2 camera had more options and modes. i feel like they didnt even try for the camera. theres only 4 modes, dual, panorama, magic focus, and auto... if u count that.
what happen to all the other shooting modes like night, beauty shot, shot & clear, they didnt even add filters.
i hate when companys make a upgraded product but they remove other features from the last.

Sorry... But have you been under a rock? This was a well-known "feature" about the camera. Pretty much EVERY review mentions it.

i did not look at much reviews, just seen a few unboxing. the camera isnt really a problem just dont get why they wouldnt add them features.
ill probably end up using a 3rd party camera app if really needed.

Yeah, that's what most people seem to be doing that want more manual features. Google camera seems to be a popular one.

The best app by far which has access to all manual controls is 'A Better Camera'.
Google Camera is fine but like the G3's default camera app has little in the way of control.

So what is exactly your complain about? Are you aware that when LG device rings home and sends statistics of its usage then LG engineers could look into it and see what is the most used features of their product. And they can clearly see that very minority of people do make shots with dual camera, filters and all other fancy settings, instead most people just POINT and SHOOT. So why bother. Why spend precious engineers' stuff time to optimize features that will sit in the corner forever unused when LG needs to update ROMs for old devices and programmers are in need?
And for those who needs more tweaks and filters in camera settings there already plenty of 3rd party camera apps in GPlay

As mentioned above, there are a myriad of different third party camera apps for those that want something more in depth. I'm glad LG spent more time on things like ergonomics and the skin rather than the camera.

I love how minimal the camera app is it truly is point and shoot which is what a phone camera should be, if you want to go deeper than that a phone camera is not what you're looking for
LG wanted to go minimal on this whole device, the whole new UI reflects minimal and that includes the camera.

Honestly, I can understand the OP's disappointment. You won't find shooting modes like the ones he listed on a DSLR camera, but you'll find it in a regular 'ole point and shoot. And since these were available in the previous version, one might expect to find it in the new version.
But again, this is the beauty of android. Download a camera application that has what you want! There are very few limitations, which is why most of us love android powered devices.

The whole reason why there is no more night mode, I think, is because there was "intelligent Auto" mode in G2 and now its gone, too. But now IA is THE default mode of camera instead of optional while being in G2, so the camera sets itself to HDR, or night mode when appropriate based on the measured exposures and lighting conditions and dynamic range of frame
Beauty shot is probably included in frontal camera in auto mode, too.
Didn't you do any research before getting the phone ? Because the simple . Camera ui shouldn't be a surprise at this point
LG G3
Love the minimal everything on this phone. It also takes the best pictures and videos of any phone.

should have tried it before buying it..thats like buying a car without test driving it
The g2 took horrible low light shots.... The filters are well worth the trade for this camera

I also agree that the camera is too basic, in a good way. However, manual exposure compensation needs to be available in every camera app.

not much just loved the g2 because of its ui and where the buttons are placed. its much better ui then the sluggish touch wiz on galaxy phones.
Somehow my touch to shoot has been turned off, i have to hit the shutter button now. Anyone know how to get it back to where i just touch the screen so it will focus and shoot?
Edit..
My bad, should have searched. Answer is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/sh...amera: Tap to focus and snap no longer works
LG made this camera for idiots who only point and take photo
Samsung so far has the best camera software, other brands should learn from the master how to do good camera app.
