SM-N910U LTE keeps disconnecting - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am currently using SM-N910U note 4 on T-Mobile network and LTE signal drops every few minutes. I put in a new SIM card, but it did not improve. T-Mobile rep said that "we cannot guarantee data service for BYOD devices". Any suggestions to improve data connection? Thanks

I am going through the EXACT same issue. My N910U Hong Kong N4 drops signal every 5-10 minutes. Especially when connected to LTE. Its the most annoying thing ever. If i start downloading data it will just drop signal all together. Had to go buy the Note Edge from T-mobile and shelfed my N4 but just recently started using it as my daily again(didnt want to neglect it even though i LOVE the edge). Anyone who can help on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you don't mind sharing, what city are you located in? I am located in Atlanta, GA and was just wondering if this is an isolated issue for a particular city or a widely spread issue that is affecting all cities.

I had dropped signals quite a bit and reflashing my modem fixed it.

I haven't used a custom rom on my Note 4, but you might want to ask the people in the Sweet ROM thread. I don't think the modem will matter, but double-check to be safe.
Good luck.

Go to your "About phone" in your settings and check your firmware version - you should be able to see one that matches. Mine was "ANL4"

I used the exact same one that I had before, but I guess it was corrupt, so re-flashing fixed whatever problem I had.
I believe these are stock modems (not modified), but whatever they are, it worked for me. Haven't had a problem since.

Yes, I'm stock rooted and get my official stock roms here: http://live.samsung-updates.com/index.php?device=SM-N910U
Unfortunately, the N910U is really lagging behind with updates from Samsung. I hope they get something newer pushed through.

T-Mobile USA uses both 2 Tx and 4 Tx transmitting antennas on its cell towers as of 2015Q1. Rural areas only utilize 2 Tx, while most urban areas including T-Mobile Wideband LTE areas are scattered with both 2 Tx and 4 Tx transmitting antennas. Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910U and other Galaxy Note 4 International Versions come equipped with 2 Tx and 4 Tx receiving antennas, however they cannot be active simultaneously. To put this in perspective, all US Galaxy Note 4s are equipped with 2 Tx antennas because most carriers only utilize 2 Tx antennas and the need for 4 Tx receivers are not needed as of 2015Q1.
Some causes of LTE disconnections:
1) You are leaving the 4 Tx cell tower coverage area. Your phone will disable 4 Tx antenna and enable 2 Tx antenna to maximize signal. Not all cell towers are equipped with 4 Tx transmitters, so this is more than likely the issue.
2) T-Mobile RSSL Routing Network Computer prioritizes T-Mobile branded devices before BYOD and unlocked devices. If some user is requesting high volume data packets, the computer will temporarily suspend transmitting signals (usually 3-11 seconds) to unlocked devices to maximize the transfer protocol of that user. This can be the issue, but still not as great as number 1.
3) T-Mobile cell tower has reached its capacity per antenna. Capacity per antenna is straightforward; it is the maximize amount of users that can be connected simultaneously without service disruptions on one antenna. This number varies, however T-Mobile Nokia and old Ericsson equipped cell towers can handle up to 400 users per antenna. If that limit is reached, RSSL computer will once again prioritize T-Mobile branded devices first. To put this in perspective, most T-Mobile cell towers located in urban areas are equipped with 11-16 antennas, therefore this is unlikely your issue.

AT&T is Painfully slow and inconsistant on my tab

Anyone else deal with this? I am getting great signal (same on my phone) But they data is just abhorrent. I usually hover in the sub 100kb/s area in my down speed. And that is when it chooses to bestow data on me at all.
Any ideas?
Are you getting 3G or EDGE? I'm connected through AT&T 3G at the moment and it's rather speedy. I usually clock in around 3mbps. The speed you describe is more typical of EDGE.
Sent from my SGH-I987 using XDA App
I can be connected to the 3g/H network and get crap speeds too. At&t is weak in my area (Southern California).
Yeah, I am getting 3g/H all of the time (never edge)
I am in NYC of all places it should be super fast.
We both live in populated areas - does the number of users on the net account for our slow speeds?

And there is what I mean...
I'm getting the same abysmal speeds on my galtab on AT&T with Overcome ROM and the JK3 modem. It bounces between H and 3G all the time.
I'm in the Seattle area, and people with iPhones get great speeds.
To top it all off, somehow AT&T somehow thinks I'm using 90% of my 250mb every month at these pitiful speeds.

I just flashed JPD and there was no change, but then I tried KM2 and now I'm getting awesome speeds.
Thanks!
JPD slight improvement.
I'm in Seattle...not sure what happened but km2 was blazing fast at first, then it slowed down.
Back to jpd, and its better, but still faster than before.
Edit: JPD did the same thing as Km2, started out fast, then slowed waaay down. I'm back on KM2 again, lets see how this handles for awhile.

My speeds are ok my service just sucks
I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm on stock ROM, stock modem, in a somewhat major city and I always pull pretty good speeds, well fast enough for streaming YouTube and Netflix.
I do know that NYC is not AT&T's best friend. People tend to have a pretty poor experience with the service there. But Seattle, no idea. Try a SIM pull, as that severs the registration with the tower and forces a fresh one which usually results in a much better connection. Failing that, I'd either blame the region (less likely) or the device (rather likely).

AT&T Download - terrible!
Having the same problem in the NYC area. Does anyone know the answer to a few questions:
Which is the best AT&T modem for voice and data on Gingerbread?
What are the correct/optimal APN Settings for this config?
Could AT&T be crippling this because I switched the SIM from a free-o "smartphone" I had to buy to get voice and data? (I have the tethered plan just so I don't get nastry-grams from them)?
Do you have to pull the SIM each time you re--flash the modem to reset the network?
I just switched to AT&T because I need telephony on the Tab (had T-mo and couldn't take the modem/switch thing).
Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't answer about the modem, but the apn setting that you'll need to use, if Broadband doesn't work, is ISP.cingular (no username or password); both are potentially available when you have a tethering plan. The wap.cingular apn cannot be programmed on the Tab when using the stock ROM.
I've used a couple SIM cards for a couple different lines aside from the SIM provided with the Tab and there has been no effect on the connection speed. In fact, I never even activated the SIM that came with it.
But at&t can see the device you're using by virtue of the fact that your SIM is inserted and connected. If they want, they can, and in some cases will, nail you for using a device that's not authorized with your line. Remember that US companies will not classify this as a smartphone as they do elsewhere in the world...it's more in the realm of the netbook, and technically warrants an according plan.

AT&T APN and Modem Settings
I am on the OC Jupiter ROM so no problem editing APN settings. I didn't activate the SIM that came with the Tab and I canceled the plan last week to be sure I wouldn't be billed.
I bought the tethering plan to be sure I wouldn't run afoul of their contract. I don't want to do anything but use the device I paid for with the features Samsung baked into it. Seems nuts that we have to go through these hoops when the folks in Europe have been enjoying fully functional devices for nearly a year now.
I re-set the APN to the default after re-flashing the JK3 modem yesterday and at it jumped up from .7 mbps to just under 3 mbps. Still not optimal (I used to get 5 mbps on TMo service/Tab, but no phone - that's another story). I now have to remember to tick the in-call volume down two notches and as I am testing again this morning the speed has fallen off some again.
Will try your apn settings and let you know if I have better luck. Thanks for the advice!
I've been rocking the KM2 modem since last week with my prepaid AT&T (APN: Broadband), and have been getting really good speeds throughout the Seattle area.
I'd say for my tab, it's a winner!
What rom are you using?
Have you used a voice and data sim with that modem? You would have to select the wap.cingular apn, and have a rom different than stock (stock won't let you use any apn other than Broadband).
On Overcome ROM
@rangercaptain - I am on the OC Jupiter ROM, and have a voice/data SIM from AT&T. Have the WAP.Cingular APN and added Broadband. That in and of itself boosted the speed to 2.5 mbps down, which is ok but not great. Was on the JK3 modem (and have to keep remembering that volume control is two ticks down). Just switched to KM2 based on @mykie242's report.
Speed tests don't go above 1.2 mbps down now, but the browser does seem to be a whole lot faster (really odd). Will use for a couple of days, then try JPD and report back.
I am in the NY Metro area if that helps. Many thanks again!

Not to pick a nit, but stock will permit you to add isp.cingular, the basic, pre-broadband tethering APN.

[GUIDE][VIDEO] Manually Updating the PRL using DFS CDMATool

DISCLAIMER: This is not an endorsement for CDMATool. I am not affiliated with them, and plus as of right now you can use the DEMO version .
There are various methods for doing this. I've seen various results as well. I know this might seem a little lengthy for some, but the knowledge you pick up using these other tools should prove to be helpful in the long run. These tools are powerful, and I've spent more of my time using them that flashing ROMs and other stuff since I mainly run a Cricket website.
The end result is your device having the PRL you want on it.

You can update prl by using ##data#/View/PRL Write and having an /sdcard/test.prl renamed desired prl file.
No MSL required.
I know... Didn't some people mention that it won't allow certain PRLs to be written to the device? I should test it with a Cricket PRL.

At this point, it seems like it's hit an miss.
At the same time, having a simple method is a huge boon.
Wish developers would jump on it to sort this out.
CDMATool does let you look at other things on your device. Actually I think you can copy your data fields over to the tethered data fields and use the STOCK hotspot as well.
Come on... I know you wanna look now.
In fact someone should look at their Sprint phone and figure it out. With Cricket I just write the same profile everywhere. Stock hotspot works....
This is actually an iPhone pictured and it should be set to RevA.

Any errors made here should be able to be fixed with the hands free activation. If that doesn't work, reset the device using ##786# and then go through the activation process again.
What would this be useful for? Would it be useful in flashing other network prls to get better data speeds?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Sometimes certain PRLs yield higher speeds over others. If you wind up on a non Sprint tower, you'd probably incur roaming charges or be taking away from whatever roaming data/voice allowance they give you these days.
Someone could start a PRL thread with date PRL was obtained, location, and speed test. There would be a lot of factors involved. Sprint should keep their stuff pretty well updated. A lot of people like having the power to manually make changes. I've seen PRLs change for the worse.

If you are at work, in an office in a basement or close, your Sprint signal is so weak it keeps reconnecting.
It's alternating between 3G and edge/roaming, and you battery life goes to ****.
In my particular case, I would have 10% per hour battery loss.
One way to combat it is to force roaming on a competitor's network, like verizon or us cellular. Immediately you are greeted with an 80 dbm signal, and your battery doesn't drain as much. Then, if you are using verizon towers by applying a verizon prl, you get the 3G speeds and a decent signal not to drain your battery.

There are no “LTE PRLs." This is a regular PRL from the Evo 4g LTE. There's no way to roam on LTE and therefore no PRLs for it.

Okay let me try to formulate a better response because my other one sucked.
That is a PRL from an Evo LTE. Last I knew Sprint was pushing out 6xxxx PRLs for non LTE devices. Just like Verizon, they have changed and come out with a new series of PRLs.
While there a PRL might play no difference in LTE, there might be a reason for those devices to be utilizing these PRLs. I'm going to look into it more and compare the PRLs. Perhaps an additional allotment of modes/channels? I don't have Sprint.
AT&T, Verizon, and Cricket only.
*Deleted for now*http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1747257
I had a corporate prl for my evo3d, will it work for the GS3? It was 12120.prl (Sprint)
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
So really no PRL for LTE Roaming....
I have Sprint S3 and am getting tired of their ****ty network (excuse the language), I was hoping there would eventually be a prl to let me hit up Verizon's towers with LTE. Are you saying that is impossible? Because I am about ready to switch because of how bad my service is (3g). I'm not sure why I thought it would be an upgrade from the E4GT service wise (phone is though).

Have you tried doing a speedtest at the same time at your friend's house? I'd say it's either a software or network issue with your carrier.

It's baseband. I believe there's only one baseband available.
Mines at the moment is M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.33
Did you change any kernels, ROMs before you started having this problem?
What kind of SIM card do you have? How old? Have another device to try speed testing the 3G/4G data with your SIM card?

Yea I did a rom one time that asked which kernel I thought I did Franco's but it was a while ago and I dont remember. The sim is less than a month old and its a micro sim from Solavei and I do have another phone to test it out thats a great idea. Im gonna check it out on my HTC one S. Would changing the kernal get my baseband changed and how do i find out what I have currently

No. Nothing will change your baseband. Does your current baseband match the ones I said?
Reset your APN as well if you haven't already. Definitely trying it on another phone will help determine what's the culprit of the issue. Let us know and report back.

It's kernel not kernal. No. Kernels controls WiFi, not 3G.
It's most likely your SIM card or indeed Solavei is having network problems. Probably SIM card if you and your friend were at the same location and you had lower speeds.

No problems using T-Mobile in NYC.
Have you tried doing a speedtest at the same time at your friend's house? I'd say it's either a software or network issue with your carrier.
A baseband doesn't turn defective randomly.

13Mbps? I don't believe I've seen such speeds while in the Bronx or Manhattan. I'm lucky to even get near 2Mb.
So this is my plan google is gonna send me a new phone in 3-5 weeks since they think its a phone issue. My friend is also going to get me a new micro sim to make sure my sim isnt the thing thats broken as well.

I'll have to try some more test in the east side but that's sufficient until mobile gets aws lte.

I'm having this happen on SIMPLE mobile which runs off tmobile. For the 1st week it was working perfectly got speeds between 7 - 15mb download. Then all of a sudden the speeds started being 0.24mb EVERY SINGLE TIME. I've talked to these reps and they assure me that my day isn't throttled ( I've used 1gb in the first week) no one can figure I out. I am on the .33 baseband also and this seemed to happen after I switched to the latest Xylon rom. I still truly believe it's either the baseband or they're throttling my data and won't admit it. My last choice is to get a new sim card but I don't feel like arguing cause I know they'll try to charge me $10 and it's not guaranteed that that the problem. Let us know if your new sim worked normal or if you're still get getting crappy speeds. Btw I'm in CT about 40 mins from Manhattan.
I'm in NYC and my service with T-Mobile is garbage... I get less than 2g and I've called numerous times to complain.... They are now "investigating" the towers in my area.
I wish this phone would run on Verizon.
I don't care how expensive they are - they are true to their word.....lte is missed so much by me
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Nothing wrong with the tower or the phone. Those are TMO throttle speeds. Solavei can suck a nut. How data did you eat this month?
This is why so many of us are on the $30 TMO 100min 5gb 4g plan.

Who is using a Verizon G2 on T-Mobile?

I just learned that the Verizon version comes SIM unlocked and should work on T-Mobile and AT&T. Anyone here using it on T-Mobile? What are your results? I know LTE is a no-go, but do you get decent speeds in a refarmed area? I can't find any T-Mobile versions on Craigslist, but there are a ton of Verizon versions for pretty cheap so I was thinking of snatching one up if you guys have had any luck.

Actually I'm pretty sure u can use lte on Tmo as they use aws bands for lte which is one of the 2 bands the vzw model supports. If u go to the g2 Wikipedia page it shows compatible bands for all varients

While I still have unlimited data on Verizon, I know it won't last forever, so I bought a SIM and activated it on the $30/mo plan. Today is the first day with it, and while I don't get coverage at work which I already knew, GPRS and EDGE seem to work, just very, very slowly. I went into an LTE area and I did not have LTE, but had HSPA+ and as I drove away it switched to HSPA, then back to EDGE. While on HSPA+ I ran two speed tests, pings were around 60ms but the download speed was about 1-1.5Mbps, and upload was well under 1Mbps.
I'm running CM 10.2 (CM11 has BT issues for me), does anyone else use their Verizon phone on T-Mobile and gets better speeds? Last year I bought a Nexus 4 and in a close location I got 15-20Mbps on HSPA+, so I think it's something with this phone.
I also noticed that despite being connected to GPRS, EDGE, or HSPA+ in about phone it says the signal strength is -120dBm and doesn't move.
I think the G2 doesn't have the AWS LTE bands enable yet. Maybe in a future update.

How much time did you need to give it, and are there any modes that need to be enabled? I'm on stock ROM with 12b but can't seem to get past HSPA. If switch the phone to LTE/CDMA, it doesn't find any service but will find HSPA when in Global mode.
My Verizon S4 would find T-Mobile LTE when switched to LTE/CDMA, but wouldn't find the GSM networks unless switched to Global. Using the phone info app, I was able to set it to LTE/GSM auto PRL, but that app doesn't seem to work for the G2.

I had some odd connection display issues with the stock rom from verizon.
It seems to try to check for it cdma network. And the annoying ?Sim Simbol.
I just flashed the t-mobile stock rom with the flex patch.
Been using it as if its a tmobile phone.
Blazingfast stable and it was dirt cheap.

So I've got a similar question, but if I got a verizon version of this phone (due to cost - the verizon one sells for ~30-50 cheaper) can I use it with straight talk for data/talking/text/mms/etc.? Or does ONLY data work when using an ATT/T Mobile sim?
My plan is to use the phone with a ATT straight talk sim card.
This is a nice bit of information considering ill be switching to T-mobile next month... so your telling me i just pop a T-mo sim in this g2 and boom thats the end of it?

Yes u can. Just bypass the activation screen with that "volume upvdown combo"(search for instructions) and u can use with verizon stock rom.
No sim unlock needed.
Flashing will make it easier to deal with stock bloatware.
Since verizon ware is pretty deep integrated.

Can you tell me if you are getting HSPA+ in non-refarmed areas? Thinking of picking one up but not sure if I'll get HSPA+ in the 1700 areas... Just not a lot of 1900 around here.

I think It uses 1700 for the 4G ?
But when i venture towards Louisiana I loose stable 4G and i get 3G. (But then its like Ghost town of GSM towers there)
I reside in Houston Area at the moment where most parts of it are 4G/H+/LTE
The Version i want to get my hands on is the D805 it seems to match 2 antennas from T-Mobile if its the same mhz no idea.

Wow... Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
The funny thing is even the specifications for the T-Mobile variant say nothing about 1700 either. They only talk about 1900. Yet, mine obviously works in non-refarmed areas.
You don't notice that you can't get HSPA+ less than anyone with a T-Mo device, right? All I want is for it to work just as well, not better.

It wouldn't work any worse than a Normal Tmobile phone from what I have noticed.
It does work better than a AT&T iPhone 4S variant used on Tmobile when it comes to Data.
It seems to be getting about the same performance in Data than the iPhone 5 T-Mobile Variant.
There are areas where the iPhone 5 Picks up 4G faster, there are areas where LG G2 is Faster in Download speed. (Basic Difference between phones)
But normal use I have no issues, I have not taken LG G2 on an international Trip yet.
I do use 4G Data Alot I jsut reached my 2gb mark for the month with 8 days to go.

The regular coverage map for data shows Spark coverage in addition to standard 3g/4g. Don't have it in my market yet but according to Sprint is supposed to reach peak speeds of 50-60mbps.
My stuff slow.....whats funny is they allegedly always workin on the towers or fixing something and always got the fukin nerve to be coming out with some allegedly newer or better/faster but never seems to fix what they already got running..... I swear if it wasn't for this employee discount that I receive which pretty much take $20 off my bill I would be so done with Sprint for this average service I get

I dont go by sprint maps on their site. Go to s4gru.com become a member and donate about $10~$20 bucks to become a sponsor member which will let you see map coverage and every sprint tower in this country, can see which one is active with 3g only or 4g only or a towers with both 3g/4g active that site has alot of great info about sprints coverage and more.
Im in miami where band 41 in most tower is active but i cant recall if miami was already launched with spark but here's some tests.

According to Sprint....
"These tri-band devices support active hand-off mode between 800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz providing data session continuity as the devices move between spectrum bands."
"these devices are expected to give users the best experience by shifting from one band to another, depending on what speed is needed for the application in use at a given moment."
Supposedly band 3 is for international. Enabling it does nothing.
I disabled band 3 and the other 3 options enabled. It doesnt let me choose the order. Looking at the sprint map it shows spark in dfw.

Tri-band phones can only connect to LTE or CMDA(3G/1x) one at a time. To off set this towers and now being equipped Circuit Switched Fallback or Enhanced Circuit Switched Fallback. You are probably in an are where the Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) and Enhanced Circuit Switched Fallback (eCSFB) are not equipped on the towers. Sprint hasn't deployed this to most of its network yet. Areas that don’t have it already have no expected time frame for the roll out of this network technology, and since your smartphone is designed to prefer the ability to make and receive phone calls at all costs, it is programmed to stay on CDMA.

This is the best info that I've seen anout this situation. I can get LTE if I update PRL or toggle airplane mode. Calling Sprint does nothing BC most have no clue what this is and everything they see is working as should. Very very frustrating to hear "oh your device is the issue, go return it for a new one". I can also go into LTE only mode and it stay connected until I change it.
