Hi I'm Capt Morpheous.
If a customer changes their mind about a factory fresh handset they have purchased in the Uk, the can return it for a refund within 14 days. These handsets get sent back to the carrier, who claims to 'check the handset thoroughly'. Since now it is no longer factory fresh, the handsets are sold on as 'refurbished handsets' with a 12 month warranty at half price - an amazing price. I have just purchased one of these refurbs.
Here lies my request for guidance & help:
As we all can guess, the 'testing' done by the carrier, is probably basic at best.
If you purchased a Note 3 refurb, what things should be checked to ensure that it is actually a good unit - e.g visual inspection, checking knox hasnt been tripped by initial owner, checking each port for stability in use, battery charging and charge retention etc.
I am a newbie to smartphones. This Note 3 N9005 is the first real smartphone I have ever owned.
I am directly asking members of the community to help me understand what aspects I should be checking/testing myself (I don't fully trust carriers own procedures).
I still get 14 days to ask for a replacement of a refurb unit too, if I discover there is anything wrong/unacceptable with it.
My genuine thanks to members that contribute and share any expertise and insight,
Thanks in advance,
Capt M.
The most important test is to boot into download mode and check the KNOX flag. If it's 0x0, it's fine.
If it's 0x1, the previous owner messed with the phone, and your warranty is void.
I wish they were as fair with refurbished devices here in the Netherlands. Over here they're sold for full price. And if you buy a new phone from your provider and it breaks within the first week, and you return it.. They give you a refurbished one, never a new one. And you don't even have a right to refuse.

ShadowLea,
Sounds like you guys get bit a a raw deal over there.
The new consumer laws, that allow for 14 days for the return of any item are european laws that came into effect in 2013.
Thank you for the info about booting and knox. I'm not sure how to do it, but this is the kind of info. that really helps me.
I welcome any expansion, contributions or comments from any and all.
Are there any other things that should be checked/verified on recieving a refurb unit?
My thanks,
CM

Hi ryant100,
The carrier is O2, and its done through taking out their refresh contract, which is a unique type of contract.
Its a two parter.
One part for the device, another for the airtime. Cancel the contract within 14 days, they let you choose if you want to return the device, or pay it off at the discounted rate.
They are quite happy with this, as are many customers in the UK!

Yea, we rather do... Those laws are a bit sneaky, because they don't have to be incorporated immediately. They're guidelines for new laws, so they won't be passed locally until the national law is up for review. Which is in 2020, I believe.
Download mode is fairly easy.
Pull out the battery and put it back in after a few seconds.
Press Home & Volume Down & Power until the Warning screen shows up. Release the buttons.
Press Volume Up to confirm and enter Download mode.
My genuine thanks ShadowLea,
I've done that, and Knox is as it should be 0x0.
Now I need help on thoroughly inspecting all other areas that should be checked.
I'm asking members for any advice, hints and tips they are willing to contribute on this.
Refurb N9005 - what checks should I be carrying out?

Had my Note for exactly one week when yesterday I woke up, turn on my Note and notice a big green line going down the left side of the screen. The rest of the screen is now very dim and barely readable even with the screen brightness cranked up to the max. Did battery pull, then factory reset with no success. Never dropped the phone, I haven't rooted the phone, the only thing I did to it was apply the OTA update to 2.36 the day I got it. Everything else is stock, so it seems to be a hardware issue.
Got the Note through a 3rd party reseller on Amazon.com. When I called them about it they said I had to go thru Samsung warranty and they will only exchange the item if it was broken the first time I tried to turn it on. So I guess I'm on my own.
Called Samsung warranty and was told that since it was an international phone it is not supported by Samsung USA. So it appears I am SOL.
ExpansysUSA on the other hand has a 15 day return policy for any issues and they will help you deal with warranty after the 15 day window is up.
Needless to say I'm depressed...Any suggestions for a course of action is appreciated.
Thanks everybody.
only thing i can think of is if you can still get a squaretrade warranty. I think you may have to wait 60 days before they'll accept a claim, but it may be a better option than having an expensive paper weight.

Ask the seller where he purchased the phone from, ship your Note to Samsung in the country of origin. If he bought it in HK, send it to samsung in HK.
They won't be able to tell you it's an international purchase, you are allowed to travel the world with your phone and keep your warranty.

I agree. I had a Polish version from hantec. It had about 3 dead pixels with a line going through them (green colour). Called up Samsung UK and they said I had to contact handtec.
IM sure if you call up the skewing branch where your note is from, you can always send it back to them to get a replacement if you have only had the phone for less than 28 days.

I'll ask them about it again today when their customer service lines open. The lady that I talked to yesterday coulldn't tell me where they got it from and said that I should ask Samsung International. Hopefully I get someone a little more capable on the line next time...
In the meantime I initiated a return authorization request thru Amazon yesterday to see if this will motivate the seller to be more cooperatve.
If that doesn't work I guess I can file for a claim next.
Wish me luck...
Wish you all the best.
I heard good things about handtec, but I'm buying a Squaretrade warrenty just incase. Their warranty's only covers up to $600 though. So if they have to replace your phone, they just cut you a check for $600....the warranty cost's $124, so your really only getting $476 back. You can buy displays on ebay already, but I'm not sure how hard they would be to install.
Update:
The Vendor insists I contact Samsung for warranty repair/replacement. Samsung Latin America in this case. Contacted Samsung Latin America and was told that Samsung products bought thru Amazon.com aren't covered.
I'm tired of getting the run around, I'm going to file a claim with Amazon and see if that works.
It is very unfortunate. If something happens to my Note then I am not going to be able to claim the warranty too as I got it delivered from outside the country. Overall this is negative PR for Samsung that they fuss to give International warranty.

Did you pay via Ppal or Credit Card ? If you did, contest the charge stating the item had issues from the beginning that the seller did not resolve. When VisaMC hits them with a chargeback, I will bet the 3rd party vendor will say, OK, send it back and we will replace it. If they purchase direct from Samsung, they can get it fixed. Did the items description explicitly say NO WARRANTY ?

From their seller page:
"All products sold by us carry manufacture warranty"
I paid with a credit card. I emailed them one last time telling them Samsung will not cover replacement/repair and asking that they replace my busted Note with a new one. If that doesn't work I'll file a claim with Amazon. I'd rather not intiate a chargeback...yet.
I think you get 45 days to contest a charger? IM sure it varries by the credit card company

Update
Got an email from Amazon saying that my claim is denied since the sellers page says that there are no returns on cell phones.
I submitted an appeal stating that the sellers page also says that all products sold by them are covered by manufacturers warranty. Even though Samsung USA and Samsung Latin America won't cover it.
If this doesn't work I'll call my CC company and see about getting a chargeback done.
In the meantime I think I'll order a new Note from the better sellers out there. What do you guys recommend? Expansys USA or Handtec?
Try going through Newegg. If it's bad within 30 days they will refund or replace. Otherwise Handtec is great, but if you need warranty ......
You shouldn't be getting/buying phone from on-line sellers such as on Amazon. It's not true that mobile phone (in general) has an international warranty.
You should really wait for an official release in your country.
Do you know the amazon seller name?
I am looking to buy from amazon and based on your experience now I am worried. Can you tell the name of the seller? I had contacted Global mobile amazon seller and was told for warranty purpose you need to ship it back to their office in Germany and they will take care of it.

Well he did say a big green line, due to the pentile display it should be like 1 subpixel in thickness not a "big green line" as per OP.

Hello! Has anyone in the US had to do a warranty claim with anyone they've purchased an International Note from, or specifically Expansys-USA? I'm thinking about ordering one from them but am having a difficult time getting them to respond to questions about warranty coverage.
Couple of guys said there is a two-year warranty with it. Can't find it through their website.
See this about the warranty from other buyers.
Awesome! Thanks so much! I've been waffling back and forth with the International vs. AT&T versions, back and forth for weeks. I wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any future issues with apps from the Market not behaving because of where I am, etc. I'm mostly going to be using it for music, digital sketching, maybe some movies. I'm hoping Sketchbook Pro gets going soon with it.

there's no warranty with any international note from any online retailers.
No matter which site you choose, you have to send it to Samsung out of the country. Expanysys does not offer warranty but helps a little if you need to send it on

Now I'm waffling again. *Laughs* I'm also reading up on LTE, trying to figure out if it's worth it or not. (I'm in Seattle.) I've got a 75$ amazon credit that I can use from Expansys (Through Amazon payments), plus I believe there's a 20 dollar off coupon, so that's nearly 100 bucks off. I don't know what price the AT&T out-of-contract Note will be, but...
I bought an AT&T S4 32gb from ebay brand new a week ago. It was working well & it was never rooted or custom rom installed.
I slept & woke up & this phone wasnt responding to anything i do. No boot or power at all, checked battery it looks fine & voltage output is 4.21.
I didnt open the phone, though it never got water/liquid damage. Another thing strange is its not even heating up from any side.
Wrote this thread in hope, if anyone has had in this situation & made it work again.
Im truthful to every line i wrote. Need solutions.

Samsung doesnt want to help if he is outside the usa because it is the usa based device so they will only service it within the usa I believe via UPS mailing since they ship back only to a usa address.
Why don't you open a ebay/paypal claim to get your money back?

I don't think it is unfair. You paid for a product that obviously was defective as it died randomly. If I buy a item from a store I expect to work, not die randomly to suck it up. Even though its a used item, you shouldn't deal with issues that perhaps the previous owner did not tell you.

It should still be covered and you can print your Paypal receipt as proof that it was brand new if the title of the auction says brand new. I think it should be covered. You will need to register it with Samsung for warranty service. Toucan do that on their website. You probably won't even have to mention where you bought it.

He is India and bought a device only covered for warranty within U.S.A terrority by law. They wouldn't be forced to service an out of country warranty. Same deal happened to my friend in europe with a U.S.A tmobile s4. He ended up shipping it to me so I could ship to them.
Then again its soley by Samsungs choice. He could try contacting their international department to see if they'll honor it for him.

They may service it for him. I'd play with it more. Its unusual for a phone to just die like that but something could have shorted out in it. I don't know how good the electricity in India is.

Im really disappointed at your suggestions, making a paypal claim is my last resort.
As previously, i bought a captivate which died the same way after a month, of i did claim thru paypal i ended up losing both phone & money.
Yes Samsung may help, international samy will not bother to help & if its USA samy i must have to call from a valid US no. right?
Hello Febby, u gave me a good suggestion, ur frnd sent it to u, but can i as im limited by the person i know in USA.
Frankly, i just wanna try something myself, to make it work & btw electricity is good, but its a little costly where i stay & power cuts are limited.
My S4 screen cracked, they never asked for a proof of purchase (but then again, they took my $200 to fix it). Maybe look into something like VIAddress, they provide a US address for you to tell companies to ship to and they'll forward it to a big number of countries for some fee.

I've never used VIAddress, but I've sold several thing on eBay to people who used almost identical addresses that went to this freight complex in an pharma/industrial part of our country, New Jersey. One person was Chinese and the other Russian. So I'm guessing they used this or another forwarding service... it must be good if they used it.
True, Samsung might ask you, but I think the warranty will stand by serial number and not owner. I've sold a Galaxy S3 to someone and AT&T at least, assured us that there would be no problems with the other guy making a claim.

Hello,
Figured I would pass this on as. I saw a few articles on the web that Squaretrade was covering rooted and jailbroken devices. I contacted them yesterday and their official response from 2 reps was that they do Not. I didn't expected they would, but there is some misinformation out there and wouldn't want to get caught with an issue.
Again no surprise on the response

Yes, we would cover the tablet but we would not cover software. If because of the rooting to the tablet causes a problem in its functionality we would not cover it.

Sure Square Trade would cover it if you had drop and spill protection for a cracked screen or volume buttons break but I think what they are saying as well as what Samsung has already said........ they will not repair devices for free if you brick it trying to root the device like so many people have done in the past.
I don't believe Square Trade covers any issues related to software to begin with.
I can't post links yet, but there are a dozen articles out there from 2012 where the VP of Square Trade categorically stated that rooted and jail broken devices would be covered for non software related problems and accidents.
Bork your phone trying to root it and you are on your own. Your two year old gives your phone a swimming lesson or uses it to drive in a nail and you should be good to go.

So wait... going from what you've said here, Samsung will still repair a device under warranty if it has hardware failure, they just wont repair a bricked device or one with software issues?
'Cos I was under the impression that a knoxxed device would lose its entire warranty cover, period.
He didn't say Samsung, he said Squaretrade, a third party company.

Which means that Samsung have already said the same thing, eg. that they will give warranty for hardware but not software on rooted devices.
At least thats what is *written*, but I'm not sure if thats what he meant. Hence me asking the question.

Weird, That means the reps are not that sure because here is the response I got. I has seen articles on the web stating they were covering rooted/jailbroken devices but wanted to make sure so I contacted them. Wish they had a solid repeatable response when asked about this.

Your comment:
Hello,
I am considering another warranty purchase on a Samsung Note 10.1 2014 tablet I just purchased. Do you provide warranty support if a device is rooted? My concern is getting a warranty and it is no good if this has been done. I am mainly looking for an extended warranty to cover hardware damage and accidental damage as this was an expensive purchase. I had in the past had one claim and it went well, I would love to have coverage to sleep well at night if it happens again, was an issue with my iPhone where the headphone jack quit working.
Thank you
This is contrary to an article from cnet that reported squaretrade covered jailbroken iphones and rooted androids,

And FWIW, there's a link to the cnet article on squaretrades website.
Also I've read my contract and there is no mention of rooting voiding the contract.
Great, thank you for the information.

I called them out on that article about warranty support for rooted/jailbroken devices and this is the response I just got.
Hello XXXXX,
I apologize for any inconvenience!
The article published with information from our company is true and valid but only for IPhones.
Secondly if you can tell me where you purchased the tablet from then maybe I could assist you in getting the warranty.
For your future reference let me inform you that we cover all consumer electronic items and home appliances purchased from any retail or online store or eBay as long as it is in 30 day purchase window.
Hope that answers your question!
Should you have any further questions or concerns you can reply to this email or call 1-877-WARRANTY (1-877-927-7268) US & Canada only, 24/7.
Thank you,

Hello,
I am considering another warranty purchase on a Samsung Note 10.1 2014 tablet I just purchased.
Thank you

So wait... going from what you've said here, Samsung will still repair a device under warranty if it has hardware failure, they just wont repair a bricked device or one with software issues?
'Cos I was under the impression that a knoxxed device would lose its entire warranty cover, period.

I know that samsung will. I personally contacted them about this. Only things that may be related to rooting will not be covered.
This is all a moot point. It might be an ethical dilemma, but just make it so it doesn't power on and it will be covered.

Thanks for the info. I cancelled my squaretrade contract. If I have any warranty issues I'll deal with Samsung. If they try to renege I'll bring up the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act.

They covered my rooted Nexus 7 with no problems. Also stated in the article:
"According to Vincent Tseng, SquareTrade's VP of strategy, this extends to iPads and iPods, which the company also covers as part of its warranty service. The three gadgets share the same operating system. It's also in effect for devices running Google's Android OS."

I agree if you paid for a warranty that covers accidents and such then a spill of coffee or a drop of the tablet would do the trick.

This was always common sense people, they only cover what the oem would cover unless if you pay extra for the damage protection due to negligence, etc.

No need to root
If you don't want your device rooted. I found a way to basically get Google play without root for all android devices without framework or login services. I will make a thread after 9 more posts

The real question for me is: Why do they deny it?
Another: What about modified Android OS like FireOS for Kindle Fire?
I've been using squaretrade awhile and with every device I rooted. One was when I had the Asus tf700, since as soon as you root they take away warranty priveledges for both hardware and software. Well, when I dropped my tablet while running, they just shipped me a different refurbished item. Guess they couldn't repair it, but either way, as long as the software doesn't damage the device, any physical damage they'll cover (if you have ADP, which most of their tablet warranties have anyway).
All of a sudden I've got a red line down the right side of my screen. Had the phone since June but obviously this happens to me a few days after rooting, etc and tripping Knox...
Wondering if anyone in the UK has had any luck with similar issues with the warranty? Bought the phone unlocked from carphone warehouse.
Thanks
It depends to which repair center you will send it. Some in my country, for issues like above they don't cut your warranty if knox is tripped. However, they can if they want...so it depends on your luck.
I believe EU consumer right law prohibits any company from voiding warranty on rooted devices, so you should be fine.

I have had 2 devices go back to Samsung through Carphonewarehouse and both of them were sent back due to knox being tripped. Spent months pointing out to samsung EU directives but they did not budge at all. You may be lucky but sorry to say I wouldnt hold your breath.

In this case it's Carphone Warehouse you should be arguing with, as your consumer rights are via the place that sold you the phone, not Samsung directly.

unfortunately, even here that's true, some are not official samsung centers and will reject you for anything they can...

This doesn't apply to the UK, and then only in certain EU countries. Here in the UK your screwed. You can try your luck but expect a no and you'll probably have to pay for shipping the device back. I'm taking from experience. I had a 6 month battle with HTC when my charger port basically fell out and it was rooted. Had to argue something rotten to get it fixed for free.

Of course EU consumer rights apply in the UK. Whilst "we" may have voted to leave the EU, we are still part of the EU and therefore EU consumer rights still apply.
You make a valid point though when you say you had to argue to get something fixed - just like insurance companies, sellers will try to argue that something that is valid (i.e. a warranty) isn't valid when they know full well that it is. They do so because most people will back down and this saves them money.
Argue your point, don't take no for an answer, and, if necessary, threaten them with Trading Standards.
Chances are that the supplier will back down because at that point it is more cost effective for them to do so, because ultimately, if you're within the warranty period, they will have to prove that the fault was caused because the device was rooted.

Dave

I have sent a rooted M7 and M8 back to HTC with no problems, as did many of my friends.
OP, give it a go. No one I know personally, who has tripped KNOX on their S6 or S7 Edge has had a warranty claim denied. I'd most certainly get trading standards involved. Not worth the hassle. Same as getting the Ombudsman involved when banks try to screw you. Once you go to an official authority figure, companies wise up. The general person backs down hence them trying to pull a fast one.
You can't fight the system. I asked to replace my new S7E because my home button was defected (it was making strange noise when released, more like getting jammed on the glass) I was declined by my seller and told to go to my warranty service, there I was told they can fix it or I can write that I refuse the phone to be fixed and demand and exchange or money back. This all started OCT24 and best case scenario I will be getting the phone NOV28 or will be getting the same defected one... That is more then a month, rly disappointed in Samsung quality waited note7 for 2-3 month as a preorder, then got a defected S7E... Imo if they wont increase their quality I will skip Sammy next year and go to a dark side.
