[Q] Random unauthorised devices/phones connecting over bluetooth. How? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i've noticed this twice now, but random devices seem to be able to connect to my nexus player. given the devices names, i'd guess that they're phones. has anyone else noticed this happening with them?
i have no idea how these devices are connecting to my nexus player without me confirming the pairing.
honestly i'm not too worried because it's not like you can really do anything with the nexus player over bluetooth at this point (i doubt you can send/receive files), but still. it's just weird.

I actually came here to ask the same question. I noticed an unknown phone paired with my nexus player today. I'm a little concerned at the security implications here. At the very least i'd like the ability to stop advertising the bluetooth connection, and perhaps even enforce a pin on connection.
You can actually send files to the device but you need to have a file manager on the other end that will accept the file. Usually they prompt you asking if you would like to accept the file.

it'd be nice if bluetooth was able to be set to a non-discoverable state. i wonder if there's a root solution for this?

Its the strangest thing... I have a Bluetooth headset I use for work (Plantronics w/ USB dongle for Lync use), and when I have the Bluetooth dongle plugged into my computer AND the Nexus Player booted up, the dongle connects immediately to the Nexus without prompting. I then have to go into Bluetooth settings and un-pair the dongle before my headset works again. I've started many conference calls late because of it and its driving me nuts since I keep having no audio. I can't figure out why/how its doing that!

You're the first person i've heard of who has managed to connect a bluetooth audio device to the player. Do you actually get audio through it when its connected?
Edit: nevermind - i just noticed it was the dongle that connected to the player, not the headset... Drat.

Anyone find a fix for this, I'm getting sick of unpairing devices

Sorry for digging out this old thread, but I noticed the same today. My Nexus Player accepts every pairing attemp. No need to confirm!! I did a factory reset , but no change. Have I missed something?
Version 5.1.1 / LMY48J

i have the same problem,my nexus player keep connecting automaticly to my neighbur bt sound system, what can i do?

In the past few days I have found two different unknown Bluetooth devices connected to my Nexus Player. I have not done any resets or anything that should initiate the pairings. This seems very insecure. Anyone find out what is causing these unauthorized devices to connect to Nexus Player?

Try renaming your Nexus Player to something like VIRUS INFECTOR and see if they still try to pair with it :highfive:

Ha, this explains why when I took my NP on vacation with me occasionally it would start casting some random youtube video.

I've been noticing this too. Anyone know how to stop this???

This started happening to me as well. Any solutions?

Bluetooth issues with Sennheiser MM200

Bluetooth works on my Vodafone HTC Magic, but it's a fiddly pain in the arse. Process seems to go something like:
1. Turn on headset
2. Headset connects for phone audio only (music still plays on phone speakers)
3. Go into bluetooth settings, disconnect headset (if it isn't stuck, in which case exit and re-enter settings, or if that doesn't work boot the phone).
4. Re-connect headset (from within settings), which now connects for phone and media audio.
5. Play music, which then often skips for half a second or so about once a minute. If it skips constantly, jump to the next track which usually solves that.
The skipping doesn't always happen, but it does seem to happen regardless of whether I'm at home, work or in a tube station, and whether I've got the phone in my pocket or held up near the headset.
The quality's not bad apart from the skipping, and usually it doesn't skip enough to be truly annoying, but it's still a little disappointing from a £350 phone and a £90 headset.
So, I had the exact same problem, and I may still have it. I have now rooted my phone and applied the sapphire 6.0 update. I'm listening to music right now and it's working fine now with no skips. Having said that, however, I found that sometimes it would work flawlessly before as well.
Anyone have another A2DP device that acts similarly? Or is the problem with the magic.
When I connect eh MM200 to my macbook-pro it sometimes refuses to respond to the button pushing and such. Not sure what exactly that indicates.

I've also rooted and updated to 6.0, still got the problem. I think to be honest it actually pauses rather than skips (I caught it pausing for ~2sec once, it's harder to tell with the shorter "skips")... it still does it when there are few other processes running, so I'm not sure what is bothering it. TBH I've not really tried it playing music without the headset to see if it happens anyway!
I've beemn messing with my phone (Magic) all day try to get the bluetooth to connect to my bluetooth usb dongle or my old phone, both of which work fine together and with everything else,
My PC can find the HTC Magic when i put it in to visable mode, but other then that it wont show up and service's for me to use with the phone,
My old phone (Samsung F700v) cant find the HTC Magic at all, altho i did manage to find the F700 on my Magic and pair them that way but still my F700 wont find it anywhere (with visable mode on,)
Am i missing somthing or does the Magic/Sapphire have a very bad Bluetooth flaw,
on a side note i've only had the phone less then a week and its not rooted, is it worth it? and is there a noob guide to the basic's eg. which version does what and what all the cons are?
Thanks
Edit:
guess i just found my answer...

Android does not support any bluetooth services other then "hands free".
This means that you can only use BT headsets.
Android (either G1 or Magic) phones cannot natively send files over BT, cannot use BT a modem, etc...
There is not third party tool so far to send files via BT to other devices.

[Q] Optimus 7 bluetooth issue

I finally got my Optimus 7 phone form Telus. I have to say, best phone I have every had. It recognized my bluetooth stereo headset right away, so no problems there. I here music AMAZINGLY over the headset.
Then I go to play video, and it will not play over the blue tooth. I have no idea why. I checked all the settings everythign I can think of and I am getting nowhere. Anyone no how to get the video audio to work over bluetooth.
Thanks.
That's because AFAIK Windows Phone 7 does not support any kind of streaming or file transfer over bluetooth at thise moment in time, it can only be used to pair with headsets etc.
Actually, the Audio over Bluetooth for Videos is a limitation of WP7, which may or may not be addressed in the next update. Microsoft is aware of it though.

[Q] Bluetooth Headsets

I haven't been able to get either of my Bluetooth headsets to work with my N7. But before anyone asks, yes, I have searched the forum for answers but there doesn't seem to be any consensus on how to solve the problems.
I have the stock 4.2.2 ROM, unlocked and rooted. Bluetooth sees and connects with both of my headsets, each of which work with my Mint 14 desktop, but the only sound I get is an occasional clicking noise. Pretty much as if all of the audio is being clipped. Also, once a headset connects, I do lose sound from the internal speakers, as expected. But disconnecting the Bluetooth doesn't get it back. I have to reboot to get sound back.
My question is this: Is my problem due to the N7 having compatibility problems with some headsets or is this a universal problem. IOW, does anyone have a Bluetooth headset connected where both the mic and earphone work? And with all or most apps? I'm primarily concerned with having something to work with MagicJack.
I use my bluetooth headphones to listen to music. I just tried using Google Now with it (I put my finger on the normal mic so I would know which mic it was using) and It seems to work okay. Idk if it is the headphone or the connection but it took me two tried to get it to play music.

I just oredered a new headset off eBay that claims to work with the N7. We shall see.:fingers-crossed:
I'd like to know which Bluetooth headsets are known to work and on what models of N7 (grouper or tilapia).
If I understand correctly, an N7 wifi-only (grouper), will only respond to Bluetooth headset button presses and voice input if you modify the bool.xml file in framework-res.apk? Can anyone confirm that any Bluetooth headset will work (button presses and voice input) on grouper without that mod?
I've used my Bluetooth headset with my tablet without any tinkering, i didn't do much with it but it easily played/paused and changed tracks in Google Music. I've got Kinivo BTH220 headphones (yes they're cheap and are probably knockoffs. These had more details than the Artics or any other lookalikes and they work well enough for my needs) and a rooted stock N7. Oh and if your headsets giving you trouble check the pairing type under bluetooth settings. My phone has a habit of sometimes only pairing phone audio not media audio.

My Sony DR-BT22 headset has always worked great with the Nexus 7 providing I do not use the Wi-Fi at the same time. I am using a custom ROM but they worked fine with the std one.
All the headset controls work as well, pause. volume, rewind, skip etc.
But I have never needed to use the mic.
There is an issue when using both BT and Wi-Fi together. Either popping and stuttering BT or greatly reduced Wi-Fi speeds and erratic connection.
I posted about it here, but got no response....

I'm using a set of Motorola s10 Bluetooth headphones on my nexus 7.
I'm currently on the paranoid android Rom.
They work great out of the box.
All buttons work, I haven't tried voice commands though.
One thing to look for is some headsets will only pair to one device at a time.
In order to pair them with another device you have to factory reset them.
My particular headphones allow you to pair with one device for phone calls and a second device for music only.
But beyond that they require a factory reset to pair with anything else.
So if you already have them paired to your desktop you may need to reset them before pairing to your nexus.

I have the same and they work. There was an issue with WiFi and Bluetooth at the same time. Try disabling WiFi and see if you have any better luck.
If you do, the only way I've found that corrects this is to go back to stock 4.1, relock, update to 4.2 normally, then unlock, flash cwm, and go back to your 4.2 custom rom. Nothing else worked.
I had troubles with Bluetooth headphones and controllers when using WiFi yet they paired and worked perfectly on my sons stock 4.2 N7.
After going back to stock and reflashing the same rom/kernel combo, it magically started working. Try that.

I've had bluetooth problems with mine connecting to my car. It will pair and then after 2-3 connections, it will be unable to connect and I have to repair it again. Might be a connected issue that will be fixed in the future.

Do you use a smartwatch too ? There is a known issue with samsung devices when it is connected to Android Wear. Sometimes my bluebux x would stop working and if I press volume up/down, it will start again. Found out that it happens due to Android Wear app. I disconnected the watch from AndroidWear app and never had that problem again!

I am having trouble with my Bluebud X too. They will suddenly stop working even though the music still shows as playing (but it does not play out of the phone speaker either). I have to turn bluetooth off and on, and reconnect again with the headset to make them work (I have not tried the volume trick - will try that next time). I have Android Wear installed but only because I have a Pebble watch - I am not connecting to an Android Wear device. Do I have to uninstall Android Wear? This is a pain - I have not had this issue with any previous phones, including Note 4.
Our Bluetooth range is dropped down.
Keep your device closer to Bluetooth receiver.
It's bug....they will fix it later

I have the phone in my pocket so it really cannot be much closer to the headphones. If that range is too far then it is a serious bug! I also experience regular wifi dropouts where the wifi disconnects and then reconnects for no reason.
These two problems are frustrating as they affect the basic functionality of the phone.

Try this... Uninstall your Android Wear app (since you do not use it) and goto Pebble App and disconnect your pebble from the app. Now try with your bluebud x. It should work fine. These new phones have some issue with multi Bluetooth connections..

So I have been trying this for a while now and the issue still happens. The music will just stop playing in the bluebuds for no apparent reason. The bluetooth connection shows 'connected' and the music player shows it is playing (i.e. triangle) but the player is not advancing (i.e. time on track is stuck) and there is no sound from anywhere. Any more ideas? Thanks.

In my case, the player never stopped advancing. It was only the sound transmission which wasn't working and once I click on volume up/down, it would start working again till next time. For me, it was definitely the Android Wear. Once I disconnected, it would work just fine. Try using a different bluetooth headset, if you still see a problem, you can ask for a replacement to Jaybird. I've heard they're good with their warranty!

Problem with Bluetooth audio in the car

When I connect the smartphone with the car via Bluetooth, the music is just intermittent suonds. How do I fix this?
I would like to know this too, anyone?
I started having this same issue after the last/first Tmobile update, before it was fine.
Same thing here. The music would either play through the phone's earpiece or sound like a call playing through the Bluetooth speaker. I read YouMail was a cause so I uninstalled and it still happened I force closed the phone app and it worked normally after that. The issue may definitely be from the T-Mobile update tho.
Yeah been having an issue with volume fading after initial connection, drives me nuts since I use the phone for GPS and music streaming. so I use the v30 for bt music and OnePlus for gps
I'm having an issue with the phone trying to automatically connect to a second Bluetooth device and begin playing music on it. This happened tonight while following behind my wife's car.
Every time we stopped at a light it would connect and I would loose audio in my vehicle and play in hers. No way to stop it connecting other than forget the device or turn off all the functions in that device settings.

It seemed like the previous update fixed it, and was broken by the current update. Anyone know if the international rom has the same problem?

Bluetooth nightmare
I've been having the same issue since I bought my T-Mobile 6T last year and am pulling out my hair trying to figure out how to fix it. I have a "GTA Car Kit" Bluetooth module installed in my '06 Mazda 3 and I use Android Auto with my phone docked in a CD slot mount to give me hands-free text messaging, navigation and music / audiobooks. My phone is also always connected to my android wear watch, so it's technically connected to two Bluetooth devices at once when I use it.
The problem is that audio playback via Pandora, Google Music and my audiobook app that plays on-device mp3's intermittently stutters or skips. It happens immediately sometimes, other times it will work perfectly for half of my commute and then start stuttering every few seconds until I finally just turn off the music/audiobook completely.
I've tried:
Turning bluetooth on and off
Turning my car radio on and off
Changing the developer mode settings for Bluetooth AVRCP Version, Codec, Sample Rate, Playback quality etc.
Clearing storage/cache for Bluetooth
Switching to the international version ROM for the device
Once I got the Oxygen OS v10 update I really though the problem was fixed, but after a few days of working fine it started skipping again.
Does anyone have any idea what's causing this or other things I can try?
[EDIT] I found one more new thing to try on the OnePlus 6T forums https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/bluetooth-stuttering-solved.1076196/
I'll give this a try and report back
