I opened up the application on my first day to check it out and then closed it. I did see the message about a trial but I figured it would just expire after 30 days. I have never even touched the application since On the latest bill I saw that they are starting to charge me 9.99 monthly. I called to cancel this and they were very helpful and removed the service and gave me credit.
I am sure a lot of people will have forgotten about this sneaky app like myself so I wanted to just give a reminder.
Note: The rep said you are only charged if you initiate the trial. All it takes is the application to be opened and conditions accepted.
reading your post saved me..I opened the app and it said 2 days remaining.I quickly canceled. Thanks alot!
haven't opened it yet thankfully. need to root and delete some bloatware this weekend
So just to clarify.... Simply opening the app activates a 30 day trial then starts charging you after? The trial isn't user initiated?

This isn't exactly true. On first launch you're presented with a dialogue box with a bunch of terms that you can either accept or reject. Within those terms is a clause about accepting the fees issued by your service provider.
It's still really, really lame. The actual rates aren't mentioned at all, and the fact that it's a pay service is not prominently displayed at all. The only way you'd notice is if you were anal about reading license agreements; I happen to be, but it's easy to understand why many people are not.

I forgot to cancel it before I sold my HD2. It was a ***** to get them to take off. You actually have to guide the t-mo rep step by step on how to remove it.
So that's what that charge is on this months bill. I did open and use it once before removing it. Thanks for the heads up.

I think that's bullcrap they don't let you know the trial subscription is about to expire. And then just to open it you have to enable the trial what if somebody opened without you knowing
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It's honestly not that sneaky from what I remember. When I opened the app, it makes you agree to terms. When you hit OK, another popup comes up saying you have a free 30-day trial, and afterwards you will automatically be billed monthly. To cancel, all you have to do is go into the preferences menu, under subscription, and hit cancel. There's no calling anyone to cancel. In fact I remember there was a popup each time I opened the app saying "there are X amount of days left on your free subscription"
The only complaint I have about that program is that the quality is horrendous. Kind of like watching those really old Real Player streaming videos on the web back in 1999 on your 33.6Kbps modem. Oh yeah, and there's hardly any content, much less enough to warrant spending 10 bucks every month.
It explicably tells you when you start the program that they will charge your T-Mobile bill after the 30 day trial, so other than it coming pre-installed there's really nothing shady about it. They don't hide deep inside a long Terms and Conditions agreement, they tell you staight up.
My only beef with it is that the quality is crap. Can't wait till we get Froyo so I can open ESPN3.

In that case, I just never got that far, since I read about carrier charges in the EULA and didn't accept that I didn't realize you had another chance to bail out afterward.
Saw this thread and I used mobi when I first got the phone... since then I am using a custom Rom without it so i have no way of cancelling the subscription :-(
Going to suck if I have to flash a stock Rom to do this.

Just call Tmo and they should be able to tell you whether you're subscribed and, if you are, can cancel your subscription for you.
I had deleted the MobiTV app a couple of days after buying and rooting my Vibrant and couldn't remember whether I had opened the app and activated a subscription. I tried calling Mob first and they asked me to open the app to verify whether I had subscribed.
I told them I'd deleted the app, so I couldn't open it. They responded, "But, it's impossible to delete our app!"
I said... "uh, I mean, it FCs whenever I open it so I can't get into it..." (Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I didn't want word somehow getting back to Tmo that I had rooted my phone in case I ever have to make an exchange...)
Long story short, the folks at Mobi told me to call Tmo directly, because Tmo is responsible for billing and is able to verify and cancel subscriptions. (Turned out after talking to Tmo customer care, that I was never subscribed in the first place.)
Count me in as one who thinks it was very obvious I was going to get changed.
I have used it a couple times while stuck someplace and bored, and I already burned out on web browsing and facebook. Not sure it is worth $10 a month... and damn make it work with wi-fi already (don't know if thats licensing issues or hacking/pirate paranoia).

Yes. There is nothing about tethering in the 2 year agreement. I work in a cell phone store and ive read the agreement with no tethering rules

Firstly.
They are violating your privacy as a user.
Secondly.
If the said terms have been put into place after you have bought and signed for the device 'without you agreeing to it initially', then legally you have the right to sue them.
You can easily argue that AT&T is taking advantage of the idea.

I think they detect it because tethering uses a special APN which is detectable by att.
I've also read(and immot sure how this works so dontquote me onit) but when att sends a signal out it has what's called a TTL number. This increases by a value of 1 everytime its passed down so the return number they get is higher than it should be.
Don't really know how it works but isaw those methods somewhere so thought I'd let you know
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Thing is, if your on unlimited, there's NOTHING in your contract that says your allowed to tether on unlimited, and that's how they get you.
No way to sue, they state that your not allowed to tether, and will change your plan if you do, so they're completely in the right.
Remember this... we only get as much rights as the carriers allow us to have.
and the other side of the coin is......is there anything in there to not allow tethering?
I got the message. A 12 year veteran of AT&T. Broke my contract for free and switched to Verizon.
Done like a boss.

Can't the method AT&T uses to detect tethering be bi-passed by rooting and removing their tethering app...?
Another way the know your tethering is when you use several IPs at the same time, like you tether, connections include game servers, youtube, etc. And it's kinof hard to explain how you were able to watch netflix movies, youtube videos, play games at the same time.

It has nothing to do with when the phone was made. It has to do with the firmware of the phone and since the firmware version hasnt changed since the phone was rooted then you will be fine. It may not even make a difference when new firmware is released. It depends on if google fixes the loophole because its not just a samsung problem, its an android problem. The root works for most any android device. If you have been keeping up with you it, you would know that Google recently hired the guy, geohot, that found the root, so it is only a matter of time before it is fixed but it will take a long time to release new firmwares for every phone infected. This may never happen and it just may be fixed in new phone releases such as the note 4 or galaxy s 6.

Good point !! The only problem I envision I may encounter is the extended warranty. I bought the GNEX the week it hit the market and pay the 5 bux a month for the extended warranty. I drive a truck and am rough on phones. The charging port loosens up and quits working. I've already checked with VZW and they offer it on the standard S5. I am on my 5th GNEX over the years that they have over-nighted me at no cost with the warranty. I'm going to have to find out if I can get that on the dev edition.
Edit:Yeah I was afraid of that .... just got out of a chat session with VZW rep. To get the extended warranty I would have to buy the phone from VZW. They don't sell the dev edition, I would have to get it directly from Sammy and that only has the one year warranty. I didn't see anywhere on the sammy site to open a chat window to enquire about an extended warranty but I doubt it's available. Not to mention you have to send the phone in under their warranty terms and wait for a replacement. With VZW, they over-night a phone along with a paid return sticker and package and I have 10 days to return the broken phone. Can't go without my phone for weeks waiting for a replacement.
I've been running custom ROMS since my original MotoDroid and can't imagine going back to running stock. BUT !! I am grandfathered into the un-limited data plan and run the house off of the phones. Got rid of cable internet when they lit my town with 4G and I get 27.5m down and 18+ up.... So long as I can enable the wifi hotspot to broadcast, I guess I could live with a less than un-locked phone for now. Hoping in the future it will be.
You can get the warranty. When I was activating my phone I purchased online elsewhere the rep told me I could get it since they currently have "open enrollment" this was exactly a week ago. It's call back and all about it.

If VZW does not stock the dev edition, they aren't going to have a refurbed one on hand to replace mine with under the extended warranty. I can see what would happen now. Even if they sold me the extended warranty, if something happened and I had to get it replaced, the phone they will send out will be a standard consumer grade S5. I'll try another vzw rep but they were emphatic I must purchase from VZW to add the extended warranty to the phone.
Edit: just chatted with another rep and they told me yes I could get the ext warr when I activate phone. I mentioned how will they replace it if they don't stock it? rep's reply "good point" ... he agreed with me they would send out a consumer grade phone as a replacememt.

The rep probably had no clue. This is what they will do. The phone is exactly the same except for the dev has unlocked bootloader. So they will take an original refurb and rebrand it as a dev edition with unlocked bootloader and dev firmware. Its not that hard, just because we cant flash certain things doesnt mean they cant. You will get a refurb equal to what you bought. That simple.

Not exactly that simple. It is true, you get a refurb equal to what you bought if bought from VZW. They do not sell the dev edition and I was told since dev edition is un-locked it automatically voids any warranty that VZW would recognize/honor, since they do not sell un-locked phones. My only hope would be if Samsung sold an extended warranty, which they don't. I did verify, they are currently having an 'open enrollment' where you can warranty a phone bought from other than VZW, but the un-locked proviso is in place according to them. It was the store manager I talked this over with and he seems quite knowlegble. I've dealt with him for years.
Yes, I love ROM's have been flashing since my original moto-droid. But so long as I can activate tethering to run the house on the phone I'd be all right. Looking for an answer as to whether I can revert to full stock to be able to do a warranty exchange if I safestrap it ...
Best Buy won't take the phone because it apparently still had the SU app on it. I reset it before i sent it home, I'm 500 miles away. Any suggestions??
Go to Walmart, but 30 dollar Samsung phone, trade it in. Sell your phone on eBay
may have to do that. i have corporate speaking with the manager right now, this is ridiculous
Did you try flashing a stock firmware with Odin? It should remove any trace of rooting (unless you have a Samsung phone which has the new knox bootloader)

Yeah, after taxes and fees, I spent 356 on this phone, made 170 from best buy and my old phone is currently at 300 on eBay. That's a net gain of 114
Install third party launcher, use it to hide SU app.
Well I can't restore the phone any further than it was because im at school and it's 500 miles away. So I called corporate and she spoke with him. Now he's allowing it
FWIW, when I was on the early Note 3 KitKat leak I went to the Samsung Experience Center at BB and an AT&T Device Support Center to try and get the official 4.4 ROM loaded on my phone. The first thing both did was check its KNOX status and make sure it showed "official" in Settings. So it's probably not a great idea to go in to either of those places with a rooted phone. They know what it is/means and how to identify it.
I switched to Verizon from Sprint and may be regretting that decision as Verizon is blocking the Samsung 15GB of cloud access I was using on Sprint. Seems that Verizon is being the greedy company as they are forcing you to buy anything over 5GB of cloud storage. I find the Samsung cloud backs up more when it comes to phone settings then the Verizon one does. I understand all carriers put their own software on the phone but I never had a vendor block and app or feature such as that. Debating on just switching back to Sprint.
have you tried side loading?
I don't have the app installer to even try that, it is also not in the Play Store, it was something Samsung installed. If I used Quick Shortcut maker I can see it in "activities" but it won't launch properly. I think Verizon did something to prevent it from loading.

They did this on the Note 7, I think eventually a way was found. Try searching the verizon note 7 forums.
If Samsung provides free functionality on the phone that duplicates something that Verizon offers for a monthly fee - like cloud storage, for example - that Samsung free feature will be removed by Verizon.
Last year, they removed Samsung's "FindMyMobile" feature from the S7. When I inquired about why it was removed, they steered me toward their VZ Protection service - that has similar locate and wipe capabilities - for only $11.99/month.
Ever wonder how they got to be worth $200 billion?

I looked into this and I found out that FindMyMobile can turn location services on, which is useful for me as I usually leave location off unless I need it. I believe my verizon s5 had included, so somewhere along the line verizon forced it to be removed.
