[Q] Motherboard replacement - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I picked up a used Nexus 7 with a bootloop issue.. spent $10 so I figured worst case I bought an expensive charger for my phone. Either way, it looks like the bootloader is locked and I can't unlock it. Everything I've read seems to point to a bad emmc chip. Would replacing the motherboard solve this issue (assuming the new motherboard doesn't have the same defect). Also could I replace this one (an 8gb) with a 16 or 32 gb board?

I changed my motherboard from 16 to 32gb. All went without a hitch. I got this one...

Good luck! ?

Did you just want to upgrade or was there an issue with the original 16GB? If it's good (and you still have it) would you want to sell it?

I assume my motherboard is zapped. I can charge my Grouper while it's unplugged but no device will recognize it. I made the mistake of upgrading my partition with this issue, now I have a fancy paperweight. Thoughts?

I just ordered an 8GB replacement motherboard from eBay, cost $16.99. I'm figuring I'll be into this thing for a bit under $30 if all works out so worth the gamble I guess. I'll update once it comes in.

My new 32 gb motherboard arrived, and I installed it right away- I felt like it was Christmas morning. Fast forward to closing the case, and I get no power. Not even a weak attempt. I went through everything, it's all properly attached. Still nothing. It's currently charging with no LED light on. I am not optimistic. Anyone have any suggestions?

I replaced my boards also.... Bought a used unit that came from a Nexus that someone had broken the screen on.... So, I received the frame with camera/speaker and boards attached.... only thing missing was the usb/headphone piece which I just took from my old frame....
Put everything together.... sealed it up..... plugged it in..... Nothing...... mild heart attack..... But then, I let it charge for 10 minutes... returned to the unit and pressed and held the power button.... and it fired up....
So, as I don't have a suggestion on if there is something internally wrong.... But sure, that the battery is plugged in securely and give that power button another shot after charging for a little while...

Motherboard came in yesterday, couldn't have been easier to install just have to watch the plastic clips on the ribbon cable connectors, I broke one on the old motherboard, if they are anything like the PS3 if they break you're SOL. The new MB was on 4.2 so I went through the upgrade procedure to 5.0.2 and wow it runs lollipop nicely. Also I ended up getting a 16gb MB so that worked out well.
Try and use a regular tablet charger, which I think is 1.3 or 2.3 amps and not one of the generic chargers which are lower - you will notice a huge difference in charging time. I'm using the tablet charger on my S4 and it goes from 10% to 100% in around an hour.

[Q] Hardware issue?

Maybe someone has an easy fix?
We bought my son a NC for xmas, well actually we bought it over the summer so my wife could determine if she wanted to continue w/ her NC as an NC w/ a bootable SD or just go straight android.
With his we went straight CM7.
Everything worked well and then one night the cord got caught around my chair leg, while plugged in. Everything seemed ok after that BUT the plug on the PSU was "wiggly" and sometimes took 2 - 3 attempts to get seated so it would charge.
For me I figured that the N lighting on the PSU meant it was charging (I use a GTAB personally), and last night i had to do eerything but stand on my head to get it charging.
This morning, its acting like the battery is still dead. no response from the power button at all.
Im at work, and I thought I had a data USB I could plug in but no dice.
AFter work I can try my wifes PSU, but she just informed me that she got a FW upgrade OTA on her NC.
Could THAT have anything to do with his issue?
I wouldnt think it would even try and update with a CM7 on it, but I dont pretend to be an expert.
Anyone with any ideas (is there a hard reset on these things?) are greatly appreciated
Thanks
j
First off, I would try your wife's power supply on your son's. Probably not the problem but would rule out your son's power supply as a factor. The connection on the NC can be pretty fluky as the wires in there are pretty small.
Did you son's flash CWM also when going to CM7? On the eMMC or from uSD? Using CWM to wipe/reset, to me, is the simplest avenue to stock. You could go to Settings and reset also.
Let us know how that goes.
skeeter
thanks for the thoughts
he is running cm7 from the eemc, and I did do a wipe 1st.
Im going to try the other psu this afternoon.
I just didnt know if there was a "hard reset" button/switch/paper clip hole somewhere.
as for settings, right now I get nothing on the screen
j
1. Plug his NC into the PC using USB cable, if virtually nothing happen on the PC as well as on the NC's notification area AND
2. Try to using ur wife USB cable on his NC.
If nothing happen then pray for the worst, the micro-usb port has been cracked.
I keep fingers crossed for you.
awesome, thanks for the ideas!
Anyone have a spare they want to sell for $100?
I just spent $400 on his broken leg, so an extra $200 isnt really in the budget today

HE got it at xmas, but my wife had been working on it since the summer to determine if she wanted to keep dual booting or just commit

Maybe you should check on the warranty. I bought a refurb NC on ebay in December that came with a 1-year warranty.

Even committing to eMMC root/install you can still return to stock quite easily. Dual booting (especially booting from uSD) presents a host of other issues that if one is not really fluent with the NC, can lead to problems.
But then, fixing screw-ups is part of the "fun"!
So, the power cable for the nook is known for failing often! I have moved my nook wrong when it was plugged in and ruined the cable. Another micro usb cord will work (like for a cell phone, say) but it will take a long time to charge. And it will not charge when the nook is on. You have to plug in the cord and then turn the nook off. Leave it for overnight.
Here's another random hint: try holding down the n button and the power button for a good 10 seconds. then release. then hold down the power button for 10 seconds and see if the nook will power on. Sometimes it takes a couple cycles of this to kick start the nook.
You could also try another SD card with CM recovery on it to see if it will boot. I dropped my nook one day - nook is fine but it totally corrupted the sd card.
I had the same issues with my cable. I switched out my cable for my wife's and it charged fine. Wiggle the cord and it comes on then off. Try the other cord cause mine was bent and it won't charge but the nook is fine.

My Xoom learned a new trick...

...Play dead.
We all know how brilliant a design the charge cord adapter is, I myself am on to my third one in almost two years. Well, the tablet stopped charging today and no matter which wall outlet I used or how much I wiggled the lead I could not make the light come on. Seeing that my Verizon contract is all but done at the end of this month and rather than buy another charge cord I decided to buy a new tab. I just picked up the new Asus Transformer Infinity, not too bad so far. Anyways, about 20 minutes after getting home with neither tablet charged to a useable level, the power goes out for a couple hours- just my luck too. When the power came back on suddenly the light on the Xoom came on. I hadn't touched it since I gave up on trying to get it to charge. Now here I am with two tablets and a $500 hole in my pocket. I know I was bound to get a new one eventually so I'm going to hang on to it but I never saw it happening like this.
Has anyone else had any issues regarding their chargers? Or anything unusual occur in general? I'm sure I'm not alone.
Ouch I would hate to folk out another $500 dollars for a new tablet even though my old one still works. I don't use my tablet for any intensive apps like games, so a new one would be pretty pointless for me. I never had any issues with my charger, well one time one of my charger did blow up, but that's because the battery was faulty for my jump charger for my car. Other than that, you might have some dust in the charger pin hole? Just a guess really.
I'm on my third charger since March. Original Motorola one died, second one (off eBay) burnt out, current one (off eBay) still working but I can't use the touchscreen while unit is charging.
I live remote using an off-grid power supply so this may have something to do with it.

Huh. I have four of them, from the original back in Feb '11 to one I was given a few months back, and they all work perfectly- and most of 'em are used every week (two at home, one in the office, one for travel).
agreed with kcrudup, ive been through 2, the only reason being i snapped the connector on the first one when i pulled it out at a bad angle
The charger that came with my refurbished Xoom lasted almost through the first charge. I thought I was going to have to send the whole thing back until I took it into the Verizon store and verified that it charged with a different charger. I've since got one off eBay and another with the standard dock. Both have been holding out so far.
Oh and my Xoom touch screen doesn't respond while charging either. Somewhere I read that a factory reset will fix that... but I'm waiting until my 90 day warantee is up to put EOS on it since my BT mouse works while it is charging.

My original charger is still working and I got my tablet 8 months back. I think the charger has lasted pretty well. How long did peoples original ones seem to last?

That's an electrical problem (noise and/or grounding issues with the charger raise the "noise floor" so the touchscreen controller has trouble determining what's a valid touch) and can't be cured by any reset, factory or full or ...
Your issue is your charger- try another.

Just a quick note.. I've had the ebay sourced chargers fail on my xoom ( and other devices). I found that the power ratings on some of them are rather optimistic... they simply are running at the outer limits to charge the tablet and failure can be internal to the power unit...best case.. or worst case failure dumps overvoltage or raw AC power to the tablet.
Fortunately my failed units were of the internal power supply version.. and aside from bad smells no real damage was done.
I have successfully built charger/power units after scavenging the connector from my failed power supplies and using a minimum 1.5 amp 12v dc supply... they seem to work fine.. and keeping one handy is much more convenient than wondering where I last used it :fingers-crossed:
as always.. your mileage may vary
Hmm, that's interesting. Unfortunately this charger is from Verizon and i would surely hope that their stuff work to the correct specs. I wonder sometimes that maybe the problem could be with the contact inside the tablet. Could that have something to so with it?

I think the Motorola/Verizon chargrs are good. I think the earthing issue is with the cheap chargers from China.
When I lost my cellphone charger I had to buy a Chinese one, well, when charging it looked like possessed by the Devil itself lol! The screen started acting strange and I wasn't able to control it... Then I found my original charger and the exorcism was complete lol^2! BTW, a guy on X10 mini pro community (one of the best developers I ever met - my favorite one ) lost a cellphone with a Chinese charger, so what can I say - be careful with it!

Note 8 is Dead.

Well, my trusty Note 8 is dead. I've had this for several years. Love the 8" size and the SPen.
Two weeks ago the tablet was dead so I plugged it in for a charge. Came back several hours later to nothing. (Plug works fine) Tried a hard reboot via buttons, nope.
So I ordered a new battery, and got it yesterday. Opened up the case, replaced the battery and plugged it in. Well several hours later and still nothing. ?
As mentioned I love the 8" size and thr SPen. I don't see a newer version of this, so off to shop.

hi, you seems to have the same problem as mine,I replaced the charging board (see attached) common fault, purchased one from ebay.
you mentioned you replaced the battery ? sound serious problem or the battery was not connected properly ? some shops out to cheat, pretend that they replaced a NEW battery but actually its an old battery from somewhere. a new battery usually have a 30% charged
Note8 very easy to open, just the back cover, a screw driver will get the charging board replaced

Good, get the qualified tech to check, battery dead or the chipset dead by using the multimeter for voltage etc.:good:
its still wise to change the power board, NOT repair the board bcos the board is very sensitive to be repaired even the "expert" at the repair shops I went thru the years cant do a good job repairing the power board. funny symtoms of note8, always ended in the powerboard, "sometimes it charge n sometimes it doesn't charge at all." never the battery. never had problem with the battery, yet ! :cyclops:
*not expensive to buy a powerboard n they send internationally.
PS" in the end i swop a new powerboard, my note8 comes back alive kicking n never need another repair for 3 years now.

charging port board replacement

Hi, has anyone replaced their usb c charging port board?
I've searched some on Amazon but they are not OEM. I am wondering if the replacement will fast charge or not?
Right now my port is kinda loose and I have to position the cable a certain way for it to charge. And the slightest and smallest touch will knock the cable out. And it doesn't fast charge.

Yes, a few people have changed the daughterboard with complete success, however I remember one guy reported fast charging not working afterwards. Bottom line seems to be "beware" and shop carefully.... just like with batteries there are some faulty replacement parts out there. At this point it sounds like you don't really have a choice in the matter. No sense taking a chance damaging your phone (further) with a loose charging port.

I bought mine used, so within a month I bought myself a new charging daughter card and a replacement battery. I ended up buying two. The first didn't work for me, the second replacement I did a couple weeks later with the new battery. This time it worked better. I recommend you try to find an oem part or as close to it. For me the first part was slightly different than the original piece, but the second one I ordered looked identical to the original I took out. If you have not opened up the device yet, then watch some videos of tear downs and watch closely for the daughter card so you can compare against which one you order.

Replace internal Charger Port Cable?

This phone did, intermittently, work. But it also behaved as though there was a short somewhere in the system. Now it will not power on, and I am making a leap of logic and assuming that's because it cannot charge the battery. (I've tried every single suggestion here re powering it back on, so let's move past that option.)
I note that on ebay and elsewhere there are internal charger port cables (3rd party unfortunately) that are inexpensive (as low as four or five dollars, or eight dollars for one with a small tools set). Has anyone ever used one of those third party internal charger port replacements and had success?
Thanks in advance.
Okay, I have gone ahead and ordered one of the internal USB ribbon assemblies for my OnePlus 2. But I haven't seen anyone else discuss having actually done a change-out of this part. Isn't there any hardy soul armed with spudger and screw driver who's attempted this?

If you don't mind me asking, did the phone work at all right before the replacement? Mine is a dead as a doornail, which is why I wonder. The fix does look to be easy (I watched some videos and even removed the old one, so the new install is all ready to go).

Well, we shall see if that solves my completely non-functioning phone issues or not. Perhaps this thing is just dead. My ebay seller is behind schedule as far as delivery goes, but again I will post here whatever the outcome once I do replace the usb port and ribbon.
I did promise to post a video of my install. I do not know if this worked yet (charging a newer battery; if that doesn't work I'll go back to the old battery and try again). But here is the video, which I ended up sorta having fun doing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INZUBsXXTFE
Well, I'm marking this down as a fail. The install was easy, but the phone remains dead, dead, dead. Not a whiff of life to it. The short, if it is a short as I suspect, may be in either the motherboard or daughterboard. So, not being one easily driven off by failure, I bought a working but very bent up OP2 off ebay for 70 bucks. The idea being to take its innards out and put them into the frame (and the I think working screen) of the one I have. I'll look either brilliant or the fool (I play the second one better). I will, as usual, report back.
So... said I'd follow up on the $70 ebay phone buy (the phone very bent up but somehow still working). I did get it, tested it (it did work but screen was under obvious pressure due to bend), then removed the motherboard, usb ribbon cable, and daughterboard from it and moved them into the non-working phone I was given by a friend. And it worked!! I now have a OnePlus 2 phone which is updating the rom at this moment. I'll probably root it and put a custom rom on later, but for now I just wanna see what the phone is like with the standard setup. Anyway.... it was fun to take a phone apart (2 phones, actually) and succeed at the end.
