[Q] Broken USB Port

Soo... I think the USB port on my T-Mobile HD2 is gone. I can feel it jiggle around when I plug in a USB cable... that and nothing happens when I do. No charge, no USB notification, nothing. Not even plugged directly into the power adapter.
My question is whether anyone knows any way to repair the phone for cheap? I've taken the phone to several cell phone repair shops, but no one can do anything without sending it off to HTC. If they do that, then HTC will charge me a crapload because the custom software on the phone somehow must've caused a hardware problem. Because the USB port is broken, I can't flash back to factory, soooo... there's nothing I can do there either.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

My first and only suggestion is to look for the not working phone body of HTC HD2 at ebay.com or similar. If You have some manual skills it wouldn't be so hard to replace it by Yourself. Of cause it is almost open heart surgery but it is possible to do by DIY.
If something like this would happen to me I would do so. You can look for only micro USB port to take it away from other non-working device like old camera or mp3 player or other phone.
Why they decide to use mcroUSB instead much solid miniUSB i don' know.

You can put a stock winmo rom (LEOIMG.nbh) on the root of your sd card and boot up into bootloader by holding the volume-down button while booting. Then the bootloader will detect the .nbh and ask you to press a certain button to install it. Then you can send the phone off to htc, it will be completely stock.

Wish I could, but apparently the cell phone repair shop that tried to fix my phone decided to tell HTC about my custom ROM though he told me he would be doing the repairs (only reason I left the custom ROM on there). But they actually decided to ship it to HTC. HTC decided to record the serial number so I can't send back to them anyways. =/
About the DIY repair. Would it just be a case of re-soldering the USB port back on the phone? Or is it something more technical? I'm asking because the cell phone repair shop I tried out said that they needed to replace that entire board. AFAIK, that board is the mainboard. Doing so would require buying another HD2 body, but I'm afraid that would cost far too much as I am a college student with ridiculous school fees and a very low income.

I have a broken micro-usb too, saw the disassembly vids, and it looks to me that the m-usb port is attached to the mainboard, and you have to consider too that if you try this as a DIY project, people have had wifi coax become damaged, lcd/digitizer damage, who knows what else from 'professional' repairs, let alone doing it yourself.
2 options, get a card reader and an external hd2 battery charger (and preferably a spare battery), or have the micro-usb port fixed by someone else or by your self.
The external charger and spare battery is cheaper by far, i paid only like $8 for each, and it's surprisingly reliable and practical.

i would totally call out on that shop and demand they fix it, since they ruined your warranty by sending it off to htc without your consent..
also, search on ebay, theres a cellshop in texas that repairs the port for $50, you mail it to them takes about a day and they mail it right back.

That sucks...I feel like the micro USB on my hd2 is about 2 die...if the phone moves at all connection and charge is lost. why oh why did these bums pick micro USB there's got 2 b a reason
To me is a serious design flaw...I mean its only a matter of time b4 the micro USB will fail on each and every hd2 regardless of how much u baby it device (which most of do)...after a certain number of charges the port goes bust
IMO the micro usbs put 2 much pressure on the port itself it's simply not big enough/solid enough of a connection to support the weight of the wire itself and over time gravity loosens and destroys ur port until u can't even.charge

Luckily, i found that i could get a connection to my comp by holding the cable 'just right', flashed magldr and cwr, and just charge my batteries on the external charger now. I was stuck on the winmo 'test' rom for like 6 months lol.

dude same thing happened to me yesterday i was charging my phone and i got up to do something. And the cord caught on my foot and the phone went flying also. and when i tried to charge its like if you move the phone even the slightest it looses connection. But i found a fix that worked for me. im using my external hardrive cord to charge. the connection is a little thicker and fits in there perfectly so now i can move it and it stays connected... Only downside to me is the cord is really short

Yeah, I railed at him for a good 10min in the shop with customers looking (hope I drove away some of his business...). He said that he couldn't fix my phone because I had *illegal software* on it... really? I doubt that a software problem caused the microUSB port to just break off the mainboard.
I've also looked at the disassembly video, and it doesn't seem impossible, but the cost of a micro-usb port is around $35 from what I gather. I think it would take some soldering to replace it, but I have neither a solder nor the experience to attempt it the first time on a $400 device.
I guess I'm stuck with the microSD adapter and external charger for now. ~sigh~ Maybe I'll try another internet-based cell repair shop. Anyone know anything about cellulardr.com? It's based just a couple miles from where I live and they have the part in-stock with a 50% discount that brings the price for repair down to $35 + $35 for parts which is a little high... but if it gets the job done...

I'm a [fraught] example of the result of thinking the usb would somehow last if I was just gentle. Who was I kidding, it was shot to pieces.... I've dropped £100 fixing the phone's screen which resulted in the volume buttons and vibrator dying (I argued till I was blue in the face- before I demanded they reglued the screen back on, a day after it had been 'fixed')... Damn crappy little repair shops, no leg to stand on.
And now I can't charge it.
Waited 2 days for a wall charger (and believe me that was hard as it's my work phone) to find that nomatter how long it's charged for it's dropping from 80% to dead in about an hour no activity.
I wouldn't mind so much but to have finally found a rom I liked, right through from WM to SD android versions to now Cotullas Nand, I'm reluctant to give it up, even though it's more than likely on it's last legs.

If they made these things more reliable, they'd never have a means to convince you to buy another device .

well a usb port repair is totally possible with just an soldering iron, but you will need a fine tip for that and some flue that does not require cleaning. if any of the contact pad came off you better know where they go or find a way to trace where it goes. if they are broken and you find where they are connected you can use a copper wire taken out from copper brace to bridge them. lastly a broken usb port from the motherboard will never be secure again, so you have to put some padding under it so it will not be moved again; otherwise it will break and may take some contact pad with it in which makes it harder to repair again.
I fixed one of these before with only 1 broken pad that I can trace. so it is definitely possible to be done, but it will be very hard if this is your first time repairing phone. it is possible to rip the volume flex cable like I did. It took me 4 hours to solder flex by rewiring copper wires.
By the way hd2 usb port is only 7$ from eBay.
P.S the good thing about fixing phone is that, I got it from eBay, fix up, and working at $120 XD

Phone going crash
I don't know what happen recently with my phone. It just starting crashing on normal activities. I thought it was probably just the rom, but I flashed HyperDroid GBX v12, clk version and damn....i can't even get pass the boot animation. After a while I did...and then I connected my USB to my computer. Within seconds, phone crashed. I need help. I've task29 this kid like 4 times and then installed clk again.

Sometimes it is just the usb cable quality causing a bad connection... I had this Chinese micro usb data cable and it would only work at a "just right" angle, until I went to Radioshack to buy a 27 $ gold plated usb cable lol
Now everything works good and saved me from having to replace the microusb port on the phone.

First things first, those of you whose USB is still working, get clockwork mod set up before the USB dies.. at least with a card reader you could still flash thru zips.. I got an external charger and an extra battery as well, now I feel like my hd2 was sorta reborn! Haha..
Dunno bout you guys but I'm starting to feel that our beloved hd2 is slowly being abandoned really sad thing.. and I blame the hardware problems for this trend..

Nah, it's just nearing the end of its life cycle. There are better phones coming out now with faster processors and more resources to run bigger software and flashier graphics.
The HD2 has actually stayed on the top of the hill for a surprisingly long time, and in some ways still is.
The biggest difference with the HD2 compared to other phased-out smartphones, I think, is that the HD2 is still very useable even though it is well beyond its originally intended amount of time in the limelight.
I notice this whenever I dig out one of my old devices that I haven't used in a long time, like my Kaiser or Rhodium. They are so slow and basic that they're almost unuseable, where the HD2 is fast, smooth, and seems modern still.
But the mUSB port on these things is ****. Mine's been half-busted for almost a year. I have a wall charger and extra battery, and if I hold the cable just right, I can usually get a connection to the computer, but it's just easier to pop my sd card in one of my old devices to connect to pc and transfer files. The mini-USB ports never gave me near as much trouble as the micro ones, I wish they'd have never switched.

Hi all,
Just thought I'd let you know how I fixed my HD2's loose / non-functioning microUSB port.
I've had similar problems for the last 6 months or so - dodgy microUSB connection resulting in massive amount of fiddling in terms of getting the cable just right, then pretty much completely screwed!
I took receipt of a HTC Sensation a few weeks ago, so decided to spend a little while opening up my now redundant HD2. Dissasembly is pretty easy & self-explanitory, but the leaked videos showing you how to do it is pretty useful. I'm no whizz at these things, but even I managed to do it (mostly) with just a kitchen knife (forgot where I'd put my small screwdrivers, which I eventually found, but everything seemed more dangerous & exciting with the knife).
ANYWAY, I've managed to secure a completely loose microUSB port which means perfect charging & USB connection again. It was incredibly loose & just fell out when I separated the mainboard from the chassis, but I put a bit of rubber I found under it (soldering iron is for pros... I'm winging it here!) & secured the mainboard tightly with screws.
I mean, there's probably a better way to do it, but I couldn't be arsed using any more ingenuity than required... it's a Bank Holiday after all, and the solution seems to have worked pretty damn well.

Hi, I can only charge my HTC HD2 phone using the USB port, but I cannot use the usb port for activeSync and USB function (data transfering). I wonder if the USB posrt is dead already?? Why the phone still can be charged via the USB port? Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

I had the same problem last week. My pc couldn't recognize it, but i was able to charge it.. I just took an other usb cable and the problem was solved.

So.. my heart us a little broken tight now and not quite sure what should be done.
Here's the run down I have the first waves of transformers, rooted was running aokp build 31 before the screen fail.
Its been fully charged it at least I think it has been (can't really tell). At first I thought it was simply the screen not coming out of sleep.
So I had held the power button down for the 11 seconds or whatever it was, and heard the speakers do the power down poppy noise.. but now it will not turn on or boot.
Any ideas on what to do or where I should/could go or send it would be greatly appreciated.

Try charging it again.. Maybe its just empty after Kernel Panic...

Sometimes I have to hold power for like 10 seconds wait 2 seconds then another 10 seconds for some reason. Hope it helps.

Same here. Mine wouldn't turn on this morning. I did the whole button finger dance and nothing. Let it charge, even though it was already charged and then did the same button thing for 5 minutes and it just came back on.

Can anyone one of you get into APX mode (Vol Up + PWR) and have your OS see your device? IF you can, then you use NVFlash to reflash your stock firmware (or custom ROM) and restore your backup, if you made one.

FYI, I am on Linux but you should be able to open the .sh file and use the same commands. Either that or there are Windows programs that use NVFlash binaries. Easy Flasher is one that I can think of off the top of my head.

Just tried the 10sec.press+2sec.wait for roundabout 5 Minutes as above written and for 0,5sec flashed the emtpy Battery symbol on the screen. Keypad says full Battery. I think it is not charging when its turned off..
Will be on Holidays till thursday and try then APX mode trough the Keydock.. Hope that works..

I am in the same boat. TF101 that is out of warranty and just all of a sudden stopped turning on. I have a dock as well and the dock full charges, but within the dock or out of the dock and connected to ac power, it still wont turn on or show any response at all. No response at all. I have tried every button combination i can think of and find on the interweb. I really hate that the tablet doesnt have a light indicator for power. While the ac adapter might be fine and charging the dock, the internal part of the tablet where the adapter connects could be damaged or something and never getting power (docked or not) and we would have no clue. Havent looked into seeing if I can install a new battery and how much a new one would cost, but that still wouldnt solve the issue with getting power in the first place to charge or function. Any suggestions or ideas outside of what we have already talked about in this thread?

RMA to Asus. Mine had some serious issues staying stable and I obtained a RMA for a refurbished unit I bought from Newegg in February. It was in Texas one week and is being returned tomorrow. I don't know what if anything was wrong with it or if it even works when I get it back. I do know it was a door stop when it left and it only cost me shipping there to give them a shot at a repair. It was my last hope for a great tablet.

Just got mine back from ASUS after a short visit to Texas. They did not charge me to fix it, but they did not say what was wrong with it either. I am just glad to have my tablet back. It appears to function normally now. Great service from ASUS with my money.

We all know how brilliant a design the charge cord adapter is, I myself am on to my third one in almost two years. Well, the tablet stopped charging today and no matter which wall outlet I used or how much I wiggled the lead I could not make the light come on. Seeing that my Verizon contract is all but done at the end of this month and rather than buy another charge cord I decided to buy a new tab. I just picked up the new Asus Transformer Infinity, not too bad so far. Anyways, about 20 minutes after getting home with neither tablet charged to a useable level, the power goes out for a couple hours- just my luck too. When the power came back on suddenly the light on the Xoom came on. I hadn't touched it since I gave up on trying to get it to charge. Now here I am with two tablets and a $500 hole in my pocket. I know I was bound to get a new one eventually so I'm going to hang on to it but I never saw it happening like this.
Has anyone else had any issues regarding their chargers? Or anything unusual occur in general? I'm sure I'm not alone.

Ouch I would hate to folk out another $500 dollars for a new tablet even though my old one still works. I don't use my tablet for any intensive apps like games, so a new one would be pretty pointless for me. I never had any issues with my charger, well one time one of my charger did blow up, but that's because the battery was faulty for my jump charger for my car. Other than that, you might have some dust in the charger pin hole? Just a guess really.

I'm on my third charger since March. Original Motorola one died, second one (off eBay) burnt out, current one (off eBay) still working but I can't use the touchscreen while unit is charging.
I live remote using an off-grid power supply so this may have something to do with it.

Huh. I have four of them, from the original back in Feb '11 to one I was given a few months back, and they all work perfectly- and most of 'em are used every week (two at home, one in the office, one for travel).

agreed with kcrudup, ive been through 2, the only reason being i snapped the connector on the first one when i pulled it out at a bad angle

The charger that came with my refurbished Xoom lasted almost through the first charge. I thought I was going to have to send the whole thing back until I took it into the Verizon store and verified that it charged with a different charger. I've since got one off eBay and another with the standard dock. Both have been holding out so far.
Oh and my Xoom touch screen doesn't respond while charging either. Somewhere I read that a factory reset will fix that... but I'm waiting until my 90 day warantee is up to put EOS on it since my BT mouse works while it is charging.

My original charger is still working and I got my tablet 8 months back. I think the charger has lasted pretty well. How long did peoples original ones seem to last?

That's an electrical problem (noise and/or grounding issues with the charger raise the "noise floor" so the touchscreen controller has trouble determining what's a valid touch) and can't be cured by any reset, factory or full or ...
Your issue is your charger- try another.

Just a quick note.. I've had the ebay sourced chargers fail on my xoom ( and other devices). I found that the power ratings on some of them are rather optimistic... they simply are running at the outer limits to charge the tablet and failure can be internal to the power unit...best case.. or worst case failure dumps overvoltage or raw AC power to the tablet.
Fortunately my failed units were of the internal power supply version.. and aside from bad smells no real damage was done.
I have successfully built charger/power units after scavenging the connector from my failed power supplies and using a minimum 1.5 amp 12v dc supply... they seem to work fine.. and keeping one handy is much more convenient than wondering where I last used it :fingers-crossed:

Hmm, that's interesting. Unfortunately this charger is from Verizon and i would surely hope that their stuff work to the correct specs. I wonder sometimes that maybe the problem could be with the contact inside the tablet. Could that have something to so with it?

I think the Motorola/Verizon chargrs are good. I think the earthing issue is with the cheap chargers from China.

When I lost my cellphone charger I had to buy a Chinese one, well, when charging it looked like possessed by the Devil itself lol! The screen started acting strange and I wasn't able to control it... Then I found my original charger and the exorcism was complete lol^2! BTW, a guy on X10 mini pro community (one of the best developers I ever met - my favorite one ) lost a cellphone with a Chinese charger, so what can I say - be careful with it!

[Q] Motherboard replacement

Yesterday I picked up a used Nexus 7 with a bootloop issue.. spent $10 so I figured worst case I bought an expensive charger for my phone. Either way, it looks like the bootloader is locked and I can't unlock it. Everything I've read seems to point to a bad emmc chip. Would replacing the motherboard solve this issue (assuming the new motherboard doesn't have the same defect). Also could I replace this one (an 8gb) with a 16 or 32 gb board?

I changed my motherboard from 16 to 32gb. All went without a hitch. I got this one...

Did you just want to upgrade or was there an issue with the original 16GB? If it's good (and you still have it) would you want to sell it?

I assume my motherboard is zapped. I can charge my Grouper while it's unplugged but no device will recognize it. I made the mistake of upgrading my partition with this issue, now I have a fancy paperweight. Thoughts?

I just ordered an 8GB replacement motherboard from eBay, cost $16.99. I'm figuring I'll be into this thing for a bit under $30 if all works out so worth the gamble I guess. I'll update once it comes in.

My new 32 gb motherboard arrived, and I installed it right away- I felt like it was Christmas morning. Fast forward to closing the case, and I get no power. Not even a weak attempt. I went through everything, it's all properly attached. Still nothing. It's currently charging with no LED light on. I am not optimistic. Anyone have any suggestions?

I replaced my boards also.... Bought a used unit that came from a Nexus that someone had broken the screen on.... So, I received the frame with camera/speaker and boards attached.... only thing missing was the usb/headphone piece which I just took from my old frame....
Put everything together.... sealed it up..... plugged it in..... Nothing...... mild heart attack..... But then, I let it charge for 10 minutes... returned to the unit and pressed and held the power button.... and it fired up....
So, as I don't have a suggestion on if there is something internally wrong.... But sure, that the battery is plugged in securely and give that power button another shot after charging for a little while...

Motherboard came in yesterday, couldn't have been easier to install just have to watch the plastic clips on the ribbon cable connectors, I broke one on the old motherboard, if they are anything like the PS3 if they break you're SOL. The new MB was on 4.2 so I went through the upgrade procedure to 5.0.2 and wow it runs lollipop nicely. Also I ended up getting a 16gb MB so that worked out well.
Try and use a regular tablet charger, which I think is 1.3 or 2.3 amps and not one of the generic chargers which are lower - you will notice a huge difference in charging time. I'm using the tablet charger on my S4 and it goes from 10% to 100% in around an hour.

Think my phone is dead. Won't boot. any ideas?

I've been having a few issues with my Nexus 4 on 5.1.1.
Twice in the past month I've had random Force closures of all aps. Facebook was the worst. But then it goes on to all other apps including the launcher.
First time that happened I did a factory reset and things went well. Yesterday it happened again while it was on another charger and I can get my phone to boot.
The screen backlight looks like is on when it's plugged into the charger and will go out if I hold the power button down for 5 to 10 seconds.
If I hold the power button down for 10 seconds when the charger is connected the LED flashes red till I take my finger of the Power button.
I've let it charge overnight (12 hours) and I've tried holding both volume buttons with the power button.
As well as Volume up and Volume down separately with the power button.
Is the phone dead? anyone got any ideas on how to bring it back to life
I've got a screwdriver set on order as I don't have fine enough star screwdriver to remove the internal battery connection. Which is my next step..

I think you are right to try replacing your old battery. Be careful while scraping it out where it is glued in not to tear it up too bad because it can 'splode. Might want to use a plastic card for that. I used a metal shim, an iOpener, and am much better now...

I'm going to try just unplugging the battery from the board first before I attempt to replace it.
Think it's time for an upgrade anyway.
Got my eye on the "OnePlus-X" as my next phone.

Removed the battery and stuck my multimeter into it.
It's got V output of 3.61 volts but amps drop off a cliff to zero as soon as I touch the contacts.
New battery arriving tomorrow.

i have the same problem with my nexus 4 dude. it boots when it is connected to the charger. basically it works like a desktop. I went into recovery mode and did a fectory data reset and wiped all the cache. Pliz help me proceeed. I kind have a hunch that its a software thing. did yours start working ater change of battery? Thanks ..

yes dude. i can go to recovery without it even being plugged in. I m pretty frustrated. I plan on giving it to the repair centre but he will charge me a bit high. Doesnt matter will let you guys know if I do find a solution.

Well my "new" battery arrived yesterday.
And it's getting sent back today!!
Got it through Amazon and when the battery arrived it looked ok but would not charge. I took it out to check the contacts and the ribbon came away form the battery! Looks like it was not soldered to the battery properly (if it ever was!) Just glad it didn't cause a short and kill the phone or myself.
Getting one from a different supplier tomorrow. Hopefully this one will work!

Please let me know! I've ordered a third battery just now. The first one was an aftermarket one, the second one was apparently a knock-off, this one was smaller than the original one.
The third one is hopefully a genuine LG one since the reseller is listed on LG their site.

Replacement battery arrived today. Looks good.
Installed it and the same thing is happening!
Screen backlight goes on. does not seem to be charging!
Now thinking the motherboard is buggered!
But I'll keep the phone on charge overnight just in case...

Damn that sucks to hear man. Hope it works tomorrow!

Now just searching freebe sites and eBay for any damaged cracked nexus4's I could scavenge from
