Lollipop battery drain - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got the German 5.0.1
IS it only me or is it general with the battery drain?
Even in Flight Mode, I am losing the battery in a couple of hours

Hello everyone, two days ago i downgrade to kitkat, I decide to re-put Lollipop because I'm documenting on various forums Italian and foreign, and this drain the battery does not have all .... well for my case I installed the GSAM Battery Monitor from Play Store that seems to work well with Lollipop. I left the phone idle and discovered that the deep sleep has never been reached. The phone was always active, even when locked.
GSAM has reported that the app "Unified Daemon (EUR)" was among the top three applications that consume battery.
According to various forums is a preloaded application from Samsung that unifies information like weather across other applications preloaded. I really do not know what good has this application.
I tried to turn it off, and in fact the phone goes into deep sleep with consequent consumption "standard" like KitKat.
The downside of disabling this app is that you lose the weather from the lock screen and through the window of the cover S-view, while the widget on the home seems to work perfectly.
Obviously there is to say that others should do the same test and see if this app will appear among the first applications to battery consumption.
A greeting

disable Facebook app (use web version) and turn off wifi when not being used. My battery usage has transformed! See other thread....70% after 10 hours. 56% after 13 hrs! Lollipop is buggy. Manage wifi manually and you're battery will be awesome.

^^^^this^^^^ . Me too. Disabled damn Facebook and it a few Google apps and I'm back to normal. The main culprit is the stupid Facebook. To make easy access of it from Web just make a shortcut on your desktop.

I will leave wifi on today regardless of whether or not it is connected and see if things get warm / battery usage ramps up. If it doesn't it might indicate an issue with FB alone or at least prove whether or not wifi is stopping the phone from going into deep sleep after a period of non use. Yesterday having left FB and wifi off, resulted in 40% battery remaining after 16 hrs usage. It never got hot once. This is my yard stick.
Lots of users are having issues with the latest update to facebook - just look at the comments on the play store!
Anyone else been having high battery usage but are not users of FB app on lollipop?

@gasland Here is what i did.
I uninstalled
Facebook, Facebook pages, Facebook messenger and com.facebok."something"....
I removed everything that had the name "facebook" and rebooted my device.
Battery has been okay since then.
Ps: I also froze "unified demon" as I don't use either of the weather services or finances or all that crap.

Google now killing battery.

After having the S3 on tmobile and having the official 4.1 update and using Google now all the time. I never had any battery issues. Using it on the N4 the drain is crazy. I I have to freeze it to stop the drain.
Is there a way to use Google now with out the drain? I do love me some Google now.

Err been using it for a month now and have -zero- issues with battery drain. and when i mean im fully using the phone, i do mean fully... it's wide opened, full net access, nothing blocked (except adware type junk).
I have everything from google installed, all their apps that sync constantly, plus tons of work related programs like office, remote print bots etc.. to top it all off my google drive + google music are being used all the time too.
No battery drain at all here. I'm sure it uses battery, but nowhere near a level of drain that is gastly or noticable. I'de more point my finger at a rogue app that you installed instead.
you try it from a clean install? or maybe uninstall all "extra" to try and narrow it down...

I'm the same, I have everything syncing, GPS on etc
my battery lasts 8 hours even with nothing extra installed except stock apps
I'm with you OP. Battery is crap on this phone compared to S2, S3 and iPhone. Web browsing is killer 4hours compared to 8 on iphone.
Google Now and location drains battery. Best way to tell is overnight - with those features on the battery falls all through the night. With then all off - its level.
you guys with drain are forgetting to mention what other apps you have installed and are running. Are you stock ? like stock stock ?
and another side note: your 3G cell reception... spotty??? if your radio is constantly trying to connect you will experience mega harsh drain - regardless of phone or programs.
so..ermm.. need more info you guys
3G (HSPA+) is full where ever I go, rest of time I'm on WiFi.
As I stated, I've tried with no other apps installed. Just stock apps with all Google stuff enabled
I see what you guys mean about rogue apps. But that is not the case. As a previous user said you can tell by leaving Google now on over night and turning it off(I've tested that).
I'm having great battery life with it off or on its just the batter seems to drain more then it should with Google now enabled compared to other phones...
Oh well, just have to live with it.
Thanks everyone

Silly question... did you guys program all your options into the phone so it's not constantly searching?
@MMACE - 8hours.. hmm..seems off a bit I wake up at 6:30 phone is unplugged then...usually only throw it on the charger when i get home later that evening.
I use the phone with all the trimmings during the day. sometimes video, sometimes music, sometimes browsing, wifi on/off etc..
Look with cyanogen modded kernel on a nexus one, i was getting 4-5 days of heavy usage and easily 2 weeks standby. I understand what it means to have excellent battery life. But we are talking a bigger screen, more features, and faster cpu speeds here...
you can't expect miracles of a week's usage here.. needs to be reasonable..
Google Now gave me some significant battery drain for the first day, but after that it simmered down and now I get great battery life. I always have everything turned on except for WiFi.
hmm that's weird. i'm not getting any battery drain from google now as well. i don't constantly have it open or use it all the time, but it's running in the background. for me, i actually use battery defender. i've heard different things about it and that it doesn't work. but it seems to work for me. i'll use my phone not too heavily during the work day or even the weekend, and usually by the time i go to sleep at night, it's down to maybe 40%...somewhere about 20% if i talk to my fiance a lot.
As mentioned ad nauseum, you should check the location (aka GPS) settings. GPS radio "only" works when apps call it (maps). The wifi portion runs all the time. If you turn on GPS, but disable (or simple do not agree) to use the wifi radio for location, you should see a large improvement.

Google Services/Google Play Service/Google Framework Services draining battery

Bear with me. If you are an expert on android maybe you can help me out here. First off, I have researched the crap out of this problem and still been unable to fix it, so YES, I did search before making this thread.
I am on a stock, rooted Verizon Galaxy S4. I have been watching my battery consumption carefully via the integrated battery settings menu, battery stats plus and wakelock detector apps. Mainly, there is a program or set of programs that typically is called "Google Services" that according to the integrated battery menu is consuming anywhere between 20-45% of my battery, sometimes more than the screen on time! My battery life is around 48hrs with 10hrs screen time but that is on the massive zerolemon 7500mah battery which I just bought, so I am not sure if that is above, below or just average (i.e. I have no real standard by which to judge).
Like I said I have read probably every thread about this problem with remedies such as; disable location, turn off google now, turn off google maps reporting, uninstall updates for google play/google play services/google framework settings, turn off google sync etc. I have tried them ALL, none seem to work. I have a feeling the issue is perhaps more in depth and above my head.
It gets more complicated. Although the stock android integrated battery menu reports it as using a massive amount of battery, the other two apps I mentioned above do not even report it, or at least not under a name that I regonize (perhaps that categorize it under a different process?). Under them screen time is by far the highest consumer.
So what to make of this? Is it a false report that the stock integrated android battery menu is reporting, and thus something to disregard? I doubt that because there are many other threads out there of people with the same problem and questions I have. But It's also not like my battery drains within hours. For instance, today I have been off the charge for 12.5hrs, with 3hrs and 40min of screen time and have 63% remaining on the 7500mah zerolemon extended battery.
If you can help, please do. If this is indeed a major drain I would really like to fix it.

Yes that seems to work, but it's not really a "fix" as now I cannot use the location feature of many of my apps. Basically traded one problem for another, albeit lesser one.
I'm still trying to figure it out as since last update (MEA firmware) , my phone is heating a lot.
I had this problem with data connection on, I had this problem in airplane mode, but not strangely with having connection to wifi.
I also observed that google services and android system is consuming most of the battery. earlier when I used to get 8-10% consumption in full use in an hour, now, 8-10 % is consumed within 30 mins.
No tweaks are working. Frozen a bunch of apps but the problem is still there.
Just now I've uninstalled fileexpert HD , as "greenify" told me that since last 20 minutes my phone is on, it has taken 250+ wake locks.
I'm charging my battery to full to check if that solves my problem.
will try to disable location services and report back on the results.
Bump
Have the exact same problem, before the latest firmware my phone had awesome battery life, and now the battery goes from 40% to zero in just a few hours without any app running when I'm sleeping... it's horrible. Same problem with my wife's S4 since the latest update... It absolutely sucks.

Massive battery drain

Hey guys. Recently my battery has been dying at an alarming rate. According to BBS it's from a process called diagnostics.client.Wakelock, does anyone have an idea what could be causing this?
I started noticing the drain after setting up my Galaxy Gear, don't know if that may have something to do with it.
Thanks!

I am facing a huge battery drain as well after the recent update was pushed. I don't have the "diagnostics.client.Wakelock" in BBS but Samsung Push Service was hogging a lot so I turned that off. It was 80% at 11PM and today morning it was down to 59% .. that's 21% in standby mode. Is it not going into sleep mode or is something else causing this? I have almost everything turned off. Any ideas guys? Thank you.
MJ7? (not sure why but like other people remarked - the battery life looks to have somewhat declined - 30-60% less?)

Yes MJ7. I hope this is a bug that can get fixed sooner than later. It's horrible. I just got 1h 37mins of screen time and now I am down to 12%. Just a few calls and some Instagram. Nothing else. Would removing the battery for a while or something help? I haven't installed any app since updating to MJ7 (2 days ago).
I've had this issue with MI7 and MJ7 so the update is not the problem. My guess is me freezing most of the samsung bloat on the phone through Titanium is causing this. Maybe there's a process trying to find something thay I froze?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I fixed it by charging my battery up to 90% then removed the battery and kept it aside for a while ~10 mins and then plugged it back in and charged it to 100%. Now it seems to be normal again. No drain last night. Moved only 1% from 12AM to 9PM. Cheers!
I have the same issue with MJ7 firmware; the phone sometimes doesn't get into deep sleep while the screen is off.
A possible cause of the issue: switch off wifi when data are off.
So now I switch data on before turning wifi off.
Anyone ever find a solution to this? It's killing me.
Same here, my battery declines almos 1% every 5 minutes just texting via Whatsapp and I know Whatsapp is not the guilty. Using Wakelock monitor shows 30% Android System usage with a lot of entries in Gpslocationprovider (even with GPS off and everything on Location settings off), SyncloopWakelock and AlarmManager... MJ7 here too... My Note2 wasn't like this... I finished the day with 5% of baterry after heavy use from 8am til 10pm (including 45' watching videos)... With my Note3 at mid-day I have my battery death!! I can't believe it! and I don't know what is happening (I only have 4 days with my new Note 3) and I have tried almost everything (deactivating) except wipe data/factory reset (I've tried soft reset and nothing)
Anyone ever find a solution to this wakelock?

Delete Google search from system apps and deleted Google play services. Redownload both from play store. Seems to help.

I noted that my GN3 would have great and then poor battery drainage. It seemed to happen right after my first long call of the day. I noted in my wakelock app that diagnostics.client.wakelock was using a lot of time.
I decided to take more drastic action by doing a factory reset and restoring apps one by one. I first used Kingo Root to root my GN3. I had to uninstall Kies and the Samsung driver to get the rooting to work.
Then I backed up with Helium and Titanium backup.
After a factory reset, my battery usage was about 0.2 percent per hour. I use only data and no wifi.
I have now restored most of my apps and still have 0.3 percent per hour usage. I have not updated any Samsung or ATT apps.except for ATT code scanner. i have not "used" any of the google apps except for gmail, search, google+ (signed out). Google music is turned off.
Diagnostics.client.wakelock still shows up but with low time now.
After twelve hours, the GN3 is at 96 percent including a two minute phone call and email updates.
------
After a long phone call, I once again saw my battery usage increase and stay up after the phone call.
-----
I re-started with a factory reset and only restored the minimum apps that I use to browse, email, text, phone, and backup.
So far it is performing well in battery usage.
I will be adding more apps until I find the one that breaks the good performance.
-----
So far I have been able to make it through 24 hours using only TEN percent battery usage. I have added TextPlus, BofA, drippler, Helium, Titanium Backup Pro, CPU Spy Plus, Wakelock Detector, System Tuner Pro, Battery Monitor Pro, AutoBluetooth, Maps, Youtube, YP, Total Commander, Visual Voicemail, Quick Boot, Root Checker, Turn Off Screen. Everything else is stock without updating AT&T apps or Samsung apps.
I am seeing an idle usage of less than 0.3% and that is with two widgets for Battery Monitor and System Tuner. They and Textplus use up the most power. I also talked on the phone via bluetooth for about 30 minutes.
I still get the diagnostic.client.wakelog but only getting about 5 percent awake time.
-----
I did another factory reset. This time I did not allow any app updates.
I installed Titanium Backup, CPU Spy Plus, Wakelock Detector, Battery Monitor Widget Pro.
I have not seen a diagnostic.client.wakelock at all after one hour of use.
-----
I added TextPlus, System Tuner Pro. I put the widgets to System Tuner pro and Battery Monitor on the home screen.
I have not updated any apps since the reset.
I have counted about 7 diagnostic.client.wakelocks for a total of 4 seconds of wake time. My wake time percentage since yeaterday is around 1 percent.
I plan to update apps one at a time to see which one kills the battery usage with wake locks.
I just added AT&T Visual Voicemail, PayPal, BofA, and Evernote to my GN3.
The diagnostics.client.wakelock started climbing and keeping my phone from sleeping.
Uninstalling the four apps did not help.
I think that the problem is with the Visual Voicemail.
----
Factory reset my phone and am back to 1 percent wake state and very low battery drain.
----
The cause of the bad wakelock was due to restoring APP+DATA in Titanium Backup. I did that to save setup steps.
I had restored BofA and Shazam with data and the wakelocks started up.
After I factory reset again, I installed apps the normal way and have been seeing a 0.3 percent use per hour.
Samsung's own software is most garbage in my opinion.
If you use ChatOn and Samsung Hub, etc, disabling this may have an impact.
Here's how I've solved the problem with this pig of an app.
1) go to application manager under settings.
2) go to the "ALL" tab
3) find that "samsung push service"
4) uninstall - this will only uninstall the updates. Once all the very useful updates are gone, the option changes to disable.
5) disable and good riddance.
On a side note, search for this on the playstore. the reviews are hilarious.
c.
Nothing I had tried up to today has fixed my battery drain and diagnostics.client.wakelock issue.
However, today, I got a software update OTA (nb4) on my phone and it appears the problem is fixed.

Massive wake lock and battery drain

Hi guys,
I have been having an issue with my Motorola X Play (UK Single Sim) I have only owned it for a few months from new.... The battery is draining fast and I can see in the battery stats that it's not sleeping, otherwise the battery usage page shows nothing of interest, apart from perhaps Mobile Standby which is quite high, above the screen but the signal bar is all green...
I rooted my phone to better find out what was causing these issues, otherwise stock Marshmallow. Unfortunately Motorola now are not interested as they say my phone is rooted and now has no warranty - useless idiots!
Using GS Sam battery monitor (rooted) I can see that the following is keeping the phone awake, no other app is.
48.3% of battery consumed by Kernel (Android OS)
Keep awake over 2 hours
CPU usage 59m 53s
Number of Wake Locks: 1
Byes sent: 246.21KB
Bytes Received: 5.70MB
App UID: 0
Wakelock Detail:
Google_C2DM 0.0s (1)
I have tried safe mode but it appears to be the same, I have hardly any apps installed apart from Facebook and Facebook messenger and I have even tried it without them...
I have tried turning off/on WiFi / Location / GPS is now disabled. WiFi Scanning is off. Restarts make no difference... I have even done a factory reset about a month ago.
Any ideas, this phone is having the same battery life or less than my Nexus 5 which had a much smaller battery...
Many thanks
here's a way to avoid it http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/google-c2dm-checkin-services-t1321520
i'll update if i find anything else.
don't tell them your device is rooted. if you go to service center just re-lock the bootloader and its back to normal.[it won't get your warranty back but they don't check that much]
can you post a screenshot of gs sam.
1 - Install BetterBatteryStats (BBS) - this will give you detailed information on what is draining your battery. Get it from XDA v2.2.0.0B6 - this gives you the detailed breakdown in the UI that you are after, the google play version doesn't do it in the UI (older version).
Get baseline results (charge it full, don't touch it for 5-6 hours) I like to do this while sleeping.
2 - Install Greenify (you don't need the Xposed module if you don't want to fiddle with that yet, alto I highly recommend it) set the working mode to root. If applications are still not sleeping, add the widget and force sleep everything before you turn off your screen
Get BBS results (do the 5-6 hours while sleeping) - improved?
3 - Install Naptime from the google play store (by Fransico Franco)
Get BBS results - improved?
Getting anal about battery usage?
4- Read up on Amplify - this yielded even more results for me. But this can take a bit of work to get right. There's a lot of great threads on XDA for setting this up.
5 -Smart network - allows you to control data, networks, wifi, bluetooh, nfc, gps on/off with a ton of great features for auto. management.
I have all the above and yield a 0.4%/hr drain on stand by (see signature for phone build).
Amplify is a god sent app. It has been 4 hours now, and I have been using whatsapp on and off (about 20 seconds each time) and I still have 97% left in the tank.

Facebook app has been known to cause serious battery drain in the past. Uninstall it and test again.
In 99% of the cases it is caused by an app. Try to find out which one is causing the drain.
Hi all,
Sorry for the delay and thanks for the replies. I performed a factory reset again, after clearing the cache etc, the same as I did last time. The only difference is I then installed Android 6.0.1
The battery drain has now gone. I didn't perform a restore of apps etc, and the only apps I have installed so far in addition have been Facebook and Facebook messenger but I have found these have had no effect at all on the battery drain. I haven't even updated the stock apps (apart from the security ones).
I now get two days of use easy. It also seems to be running slightly faster. I will update apps one by one, over the course of a few days to make sure nothing causes it again...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-extreme-battery-life-t3095884
I use this guide, works really great to limit wake locks.
And I don't use Fb app but use the browser instead, battery lasts easily two days of "heavy" usage !
I found the problem, or at least a major bug. Whenever you cast to Google Chromecast Audio and then stop casting completely there is a massive wakelock until you next restart the phone. My phone was awake all night and down to 20% battery life. Android OS takes a massive portion of the battery life and under keep awake stats it's 9 hours +. It seems that when it says disconnected it is not. A major bug! I'll try and report it using Google's bug reporter...

Nope, Doze had no affect at all but it should be as it was sitting stationary overnight - normally the drain overnight is a few percent at the most, last night it was around 65% and I was left with 20% in the morning and this was I think the first time I had used Google Chromecast Audio since the factory reset with great battery life up to last night... I could try Servicely but I am not sure on the service to kill and I'd like to keep it 100% stock for now so I can help out Google to fix the bug (or Motorola if they bother)... What a pain as I just bought 4x Google Chromecast Audios!!
I have reported it here in the Android bug tracker, feel free to comment / star the issue to bring it to Google's attention.
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=208324
However I am not sure if this is a Motorola Issue or a Google Marshmallow / Chromecast issue?? Motorola support have been very unhelpful so no luck if that is the case...
If anyone else with Chromecast Audio could confirm the bug that would be great.
Thanks
Laurence
There's a post on reddit about battery drain with chromecast audio about a year ago, not sure if it's the same issue though.

battery drains fast

I have SM-G950U and the battery is draining faster than it should, I got 68% charge but after 2 hours on standy and it's on power saving mode, I got 10% drain without doing anything. Does anybody knows what's happening?

-----UPDATE-----
Before I went to bed last night, I flashed the XAA firmware and installed the gsam battery monitor, right now, I'm monitoring the battery performance and how long it takes to fully drain the battery

Give GSam Battery Monitor from Playstore a go. It can give you an overview of whats using your juice.
Alternatively you can use Better BatteryStats: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
If you are rooted just install the XDAedition from post #2
If not rooted then follow instructions in post #4
Definitely some rogue app running in the background...
As mentioned above, use an app to monitor your battery. But I would also suggest installing an app to monitor your data usage, because sometimes your connections and data transfers are the culprits in battery drain.
Let us know what is the cause of this issue

Ok, so I've been observing my battery for over 2 days now, and it seems that the problem is my cellular connection. I took the sim card out and noticed that the battery hasn't drained for several hours. But I wonder why my galaxy s8 is having this problem, the sim card I'm using on my galaxy s8 is the one that I've been using on my galaxy s7 for the past several months and I didn't experienced the same problem on my galaxy s8
Is your network signal weak?

This is a strange issue because usually battery drainage happens because of background updates and data transfer of certain apps.
Can you try turning off your mobile data connection and see if the drainage persists? You need to isolate the issue in order to identify it
can confirm that switching data to 2G network vs 3G/LTE has drastically improved my standby time, massively, especially if there is no 3g/LTE in the area, the phone hunts continually for 3G/LTE thus draining battery, but after switching to 2G no problems, just means that internet is damn slow...
You can try hibernating apps that you rarely use. Also, phones tend to seek LTE; if it happens to be that you are in an area with bad carrier coverage, turn off your LTE.
On the other hand, try to uninstall unused apps and turn off Always on Display.
edit: also, check the battery usage of your apps. In my case, Facebook, Tinder (lol), Spotify, Messenger, and Snapchat are the apps that consume my battery a lot. Device Maintenance usually prompts me that about an app excessively using the battery. Nevertheless, hibernating apps would definitely help.

Do you know if the device would still be searching for LTE constantly if Wifi is connected? I'm just curious, I live in an apartment that has almost 0 data, and phones tend to pick and choose whether they want to be on 3G or LTE here. Definitely would be a drain, but I don't know if it matters if I'm on my wifi network..

No, I do have a very strong signal in my area. I'm getting an average download speed at 50mpbs and download speeds at 10mbps

I did a factory reset on my phone and let it just sit for the whole night. I left it with it a 100% charge and after 6 hours, it drained 20% of my battery

My carrier doesn't support 2g anymore. Also, switching to 3g still doesn't stop the battery drain

I turned my mobile date off and still got battery drain, and maybe a lot worst this time. I got 3% drainage for about 30 mins of standby. I have my wifi turned off

Try to install a data manager/tracking app and another battery tracking app and see if you can get any tangible stats out of those.:fingers-crossed:
I think this may be my problem

I don't know, I just found this website and found out that there are just few LTE/3G bands that my phone supports, could this be the reason why? anyone?
My usage for the last 2 days until I decided to put a SIM card and enable data
Wow, this thing's battery is inconsistent. Good one day, bad the next. Within 2h 26m, my phone dropped 12% with only 27:38 screen on time. I listened to maybe 4-5 songs in Google Play Music.
Anyone know why Samsung DeX Home would be taking up so much space, and why playing only a few songs *that have been downloaded* is causing a decent drain through GPM?
Not sure what the deal is with Android System Kernel, but it looks like the wakelock is from audioserver.
My S8+ battery performance was not very good since I started using the phone. Installed GSAM and granted it the needed permission via ADB. Recently battery drain has been terrible because mainly of Google Play services as well as FB. Battery only lasted for barely the whole day and sometimes I had to recharge during the evening.
After a lot of search and trial and error including disabling all Bloat ware apps using BK Disabler (as per a post at the beginning of this thread) and which caused more problems actually, I re-enabled all apps again. I installed Greenify with Agressive Doze enabled and Greenifying system apps enabled, but that didn't help either.
Finally, that's what I did and which gave me for the first day since I used the phone 4h15m of SOT and still 54% of my battery remaining!
1- Apps installed: Greenify, BK Disabler (with plug-in), GSAM and Play Services Info.
2- with BK Disabler I disabled all FB related apps (Facebook, FB App Installer, FB App Manager and FB services) and installed instead any 3rd party app like FB Lite, Swift FB, Metal or Friendly.
3- Disabled FB Messenger and installed Messenger Lite.
4- In Greenify, I disabled Agressive Doze and Greenify system apps.
5- I installed the latest Google Play Services Beta app version 12.2.09.
6- I am using Power Saving mode with FHD+ but will try tomorrow without it.
The battery drain was dramatically decreased knowing that I am using 3 email accounts (Gmail, Hotmail and Good for Enterprise), LinkedIn, Instagram, 2 What's app accounts via Parallel Space, Swift FB, Messenger Lite, Telegram as well a bunch of other apps. I am usually using 4G and Wi-Fi while at home with a lot of FB and web browsing.
Hope this post shed some light and help on battery drain issue with the S8+.
Ciao
Note: I had 8+ hours SOT yesterday!!
