Mount to folder on NAS - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I was wondering if anybody knows a way to map to a folder on my NAS. Specifically what I would like to do is have a folder somewhere on my Nexus Player that is a shortcut to a folder on my NAS. I want applications to be able to access files not located locally on the device.
Even more specifically I am trying to play my nes and snes roms that are located on my NAS. The apps work fine but they can not find files over my network like esfile explorer can for example.
My player is unlocked and rooted.
Thanks,
Rob

Just got it to work with the Lollirock ROM, and i bet thats ur ounly option unless u find a kernel that supports CIFS, dont think the official one does it?
*EDIT* - Oh, ye, right..., found this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex...ent/kernel-unleashed-nexus-player-v1-t2977254 , bet that will work to,
i used this app to enter "permissive" mode, i read that u needed it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mrbimc.selinux
and a modified version of the CIFS Manager 1.5a app found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53760495&postcount=537
to be able to mount my NAS's samba share like:
192.168.x.x/Download/Games
/mnt/cifs/Games

Thanks!!! will try as soon I as get a chance!!!

Can you let us know which option you went with and how well it worked? I'd like to do this since Stickmount isn't working out well for me.
Thanks

OK I just want to first say THANK YOU!!!!!
Now I will try and tell you all that I did. I have done so many things I am not sure exactly what combination of things worked. I will tell you that you definitely need to be rooted and you also need the modified cifs app as previously mentioned. I also installed the kernel that supports cifs as mentioned. as far as permissive mode goes I do not have the app mentioned but I do believe I did this manually through a terminal. this may or may not persist without editing some file I am not sure? I hope this was at least some help. Thanks again!

and just to add a short rant... Why is this not a normal part of android!!!!! especially the nexus player! A device that they want you to connect to your tv and with this basic feature could make it a fully functional htpc. WTF google!!!!

I am with you on that. However, if they added all of those features, it'll introduce too many variables for them to work with when troubleshooting. I think that's what it comes down to

[HOWTO] Remove Samsung Apps

Lists of apps which may be removed safely have been provided elsewhere on this forum, I have taken a list from the AngeloM thread and created a script which may be run each time a new rom is installed to remove all Samsung apps.
Pre-requisite: You need to be rooted!
1 - Install script manager which is free from the market (https://market.android.com/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager)
2 - Copy the attached script file to your sd card. You may edit it to add/remove apps as required.
3 - Start script manager, point it to my script file and tick to box to run as root.
4 - Run
That's it.
Thanks mate!
But your script had some problems to quit running
Edit:
Found a typo: rm /system/app/SamsungWidget_. ews.apk -f
And probably a remount ro and some status-echos would be neat
My unix scripting skills are pretty poor ;-(
I've fixed the typo and re-loaded.
Well, I'm currently at work
Maybe I'll put up a better script, when I find the time this weekend
Would be easier, to make a list of the apk's and then go through every element with a for-loop.
But as this is a quite simple script, it's not that necessary to make a beauty out if it...
Ah, by the way, the script didn't finish here. ATM I don't really know why. Will go through it, when I find the time
Thanks for the nice list of removable Software
Hey guys
i'm just taking a simple adb script to do this job...
something like this works great for me!

That should do the job as well. More than one way of skinning a cat
Just makes it easier than having to do it manually (especially after loading new rom).

Btw one more question,
If I'll just freeze those apps the OP listed using Titanium Backup, is that means that Titanium backup will start running in the background in order to block those apps ?
If so i'd better just remove them ?
Thx.

CIFS Support With Rooted Stock?

Hello all,
I have hardly posted on this forum because I usually don't need to. My answers are usually answered in some thread or another. I have been lurking for a couple of years now. Thanks to all the XDA users who help out.
I am perfectly satisfied with the Nexus 7 completely stock, with one exception: I want to access windows and linux/samba shares from the tablet over Wifi. I do not want to install a custom ROM to do this. I saw a thread or two that mentioned this briefly, saying there was a kernel that does this, but mostly it is all vague. I found one kernel in the development forum that provides CIFS, but I do not know if that will work with the stock rom if I were to flash it.
Would someone please help me understand this? All I want is to use files on my other computers.
Thanks in advance!
-David
You can access files on a network with ES file explorer.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
If you want to mount the CIFs shares as local directories then you need to be rooted and the stock ROM will need some additional kernel modules. You don't need a custom ROM in that respect, but you do need to root the device. Cifs Manager, which only works as root anyway, will allow you to load the modules and then manage the mounting/unmounting of the shares.
There's the N7 specific modules in qwerp_'s thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781411. The 10th post of that thread tells you how to add those modules.
There's a Cifs Manager thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756158 which details some common problems and set up tips.

Just so everyone knows, I got this to work flawlessly , but I had to go through hell to make sharing on Windows 7 work properly . I'm going to document that here for everyone's benefit.
Before I start, the end result was watching VOB format movies over wifi for 2+ hours with no issues at all. Very pleased with this. You can't do this with a basic SMB browser (because it has to download the file before viewing it).
I followed a lot of tutorials online after my initial attempts at sharing over the network failed. I wanted to do this WITHOUT a HomeGroup and WITH USER SECURITY ENABLED. I didn't want to share everything to Everyone like most tutorials suggest.
It turned out that sharing worked fine, with or without HomeGroup enabled, but only with other Windows 7 machines. This is because Microsoft hates my life and because it doesn't support "legacy" devices by default. The coolest part about all of this is that there is no way to fix this except by editing the registry directly. I will paste the registry fix into this post and also link to the source (Microsoft) just in case the link goes down.
Open: regedit.exe as Administrator
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0
Create: DWORD (32-bit), called "AllowLegacySrvCall"
Set: AllowLegacySrvCall = 1 (binary, hex, or octal, doesn't matter if it's value is 1)
(I am a new user and cannot post links...)
support.microsoft.com/kb/957441
Another important thing: in the Network and Sharing Center, you'll need to edit advanced sharing options and enable 48- and 56-bit encryption support for older protocols (Don't use the 128-bit encryption because it probably won't work with most other devices, like the tablet).
Lastly, in your CIFS mount options (in CIFSManager this is the last input box in the settings) you may need to add domain=WORKGROUP,sec=ntlmv2
This is because the username it logs in with may or may not need to be specified according to the workgroup you are in (or domain, if applicable). The security option tells CIFS.ko to use one of the more recent authentication protocols that Windows 7 requires by default. You can change this default setting in Windows 7, but I think it is better to use the updated authentication method from Android since it appears to be supported.
Hope that helps anyone who is raging about this. I know I did.
If I think of anything else that's important, I will try to update this post. If anyone has any questions about getting this to work, let me know!
Thanks again to all who helped me figure this out. CIFS is wonderful!

UMS Mounter

Hi all,
First thread here .
So, on with it. I've been a member on this forum for quite some time, but never felt like posting or anything as I didn't have anything interesting to share and all the questions I might've got at some point got already answered...
Anyway, about a year a go I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III. Cute little 'monster', powerful and all... and I got hit by MTP. I'm a Linux user, so getting MTP to work was a huge pain. So I started reading, digging, found out that some guys already implemented some scripts for mounting the external SD as UMS... the problem was that they didn't work on my end.
So I developed my own little app. Nothin' fancy, two buttons to switch from MTP to UMS and back.
In the meanwhile, I changed my phone to a Note 2 LTE and did some more tweaking on my app and now I'm kinda ready to share it with you guys:laugh:.
You need to have a rooted phone equipped with busybox (my app will prompt warnings telling you you're not rooted or you don't have busybox, but I thought it was nice to tell you here the requirements).
One small thing, besides the usual "I'm not responsible to any damages brought to your phone and all": after transferring to / from your SD card, please use the eject command (or the safety remove feature on Windows) to unbind the card from your operating system before changing back to UMS. That way you ensure no harm is brought to you SD card or to the data on it.
All that being said, you can download the app from here: devver.ro/ums-mounter/ (I don't have enough posts to give an external link, so you'll have to enter the text manually in your browser). The text on that page is written both in Romanian (my native language) and English so there shouldn't be any problems .
This app should work on every device that has an SD card and runs Android 4.3+. Oh yeah, there might be some glitches on devices with Samsung's official releases (bummer, I know), but that's related to some screw-ups on their end, 'cause they're random from ROM to ROM.
Anyway, hope you'll like it (if you test it). If you have and problems, comment here and attach a logcat and I'll see if I'm smart enough to help you.

Version 1.1
Changes:
- please uninstall the previous version, as I've changed the signature on the file ;
- added a small sanity check which will force you to unplug your phone from the computer before switching between modes (hopefully this will also force you to safely remove the external sd card );
- fixed (i hope at least) the situation where the card is not mounted as usb on Touchwizz related ROMs;
As usual, the app can be downloaded from devver.ro/ums-mounter. Thanks again for testing .

It mounts the card slots (although it needs a reboot sometimes), but the PC shows up two empty usb slots and the sd card is not mounted.
Im running DN3 V5+.
I do hope you can fix it.
Thank you.
@erljayp: that's one ROM which is based on a stock ROM and, as I mentioned in my OP, there might be glitches woth 'em.
I'll setup my phone into dual booting so that's gonna be a bit easier to test these ROMs and hopefully sort them out.
Thanks for testing my little app

I've used play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox to install busybox. Basically, after you install the app from the play store, you need to open it in order for it to actually download and install the busybox binaries. If you just downloaded the app from play store but didn't actually open it, that may be the problem

Now working in DN3 V5+, but I have fluctuating transfer rates. What is the average transfer rate you have?
Thank you.
@erljayp: i get about a maximum of 2 MB/s transferring a file bigger than 50-100 MB, which I find quite satisfying. Also, if I'm not mistaking, the transfer rates are influences by a lot of factors: the card's class, if you're transferring a lot of small files (mp3's, for example) etc.
Anyway, glad that sorted your problem. Like I said before, my app should now work not only on the DN3, but on all ROMs (CM11 based, AOSP, AOKP, ROM's based on the stock Samsung release). If you find a ROM that won't work, Iemme know and I'll see what's to be done about it .

You don't have to be connected to the computer. Try and run the following in the terminal emulator:
- su (if you didn't);
- mount > /sdcard/mount.log
And after that, on your internal storage you shall find a file called mount.log. Give me the contents of that file, please.

Perhaps i didn't express myself well enough, sorry...
1). su (for gaining root access, no matter if you're doing this from the terminal emulator or from your pc);
2). mount > /sdcard/mount.log
Again, sorry for the confusion.

[MOD] [VR] [Dev] Samsung Gear VR on other devices.

Hey guys so last time I used it a few months ago this was how I got Samsung Gear VR working on my LG V20 rom. For those DEVs that would like to add this feature I thought we could all work together to get this on every device that is running 1440p screen just for quality reasons.
This is for devs only not a flash able zip.

Possible to slim it down (Apps)? To include 174Mb in the System is a bit much for that few Users who'd own a Gear VR. Maybe I'll be better if You provide it as flashable Zip. If You need help with that i could be Your Man!
BR and cool stuff btw!
De-odexing could be also a good Step besides pulling it from the System Image instead of dumping it from a running System. But just a suggestion....
Im about to compress those apps to see how much i can save but i need to finish installing a new os. If you want to make a zipable you can ill post it up and can givw u access to the google drive.
I know this is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway:
Where do you copy the contents of the app-private folder
Are there any other instructions? I remember I had to get this to work on a rooted samsung and I thought there was suppose to be some service running for the gear vr software to kick off when the device is connected.

I will make a lovely flashable AROMA based ZIP this Weekend. I can also improve the Size a bit by using my optimized Compression methods. Think the Size isn't that important as standalone ZIP, but some Users have slow connections and bad Data Plans...
I don't own the Gear VR but things like that have to be supported! It's a step in the right direction (Android shouldn't be used to include OEM exclusive Features dear Samsung! Share them!)
BR
So I understand you copy it to app-private in data, but that doesnt give you the software. Does anyone. Have a zip with the required apks needed to actually launch the vr setup wizard?

200MB is not that much gain when most roms will have 500MB+ removed and the system portion would be un changed so free space would be sitting there to be taken up.

Oh so this has to be done before you even flash your phone, you can't add Gear VR functionality after your phone has already been flashed. Sorry I misunderstood.
It would be cool if this was a separate package that could be added to an existing phone with root access.

does this then enable the auto detection when pluging in ? and the touch pad and buttons too ? ..

sync folder over homenetwork

Hi everyone.
I want to apply this thoughts:
I want to share an folder adressed from win 10: android, this is filled with subfolders: music, downloads, documents.
I want that the music example get his input direct from android/music
If I delete/create something in A so it has also delete/create in B, in both direction full automaticly
So how can I make that?
Since 120 minutes I have got knowledge about smb and share function by windows. But the rest I can't imagine.
I excuse my self I didn't find a network forum I put it here.

Android cannot access smb shares without third-party apps. You'll need to access smb share to sync it from Android's side.
Windows cannot sync folders (without problems) not using third-party apps.
In theory, you can install something like rsync on both Windows and Android but it will be "apps" too.
Dropbox works just fine under Windows and Android and you'll not be limited to your home network only.
Ok, u right but vortell give me a good tip,
İ search by google and its called: mount
İm looking right know, how it could be works or not.
nice app is smb sync or mount a samba share on the phone...
So I research and found out that is possible to mount an network share folder as folder in android (where the system get access and apps to) with dsfile and ssqhelper. But I'll need cfis support from kernel. As I know standard kernel doesn't support it and direction goes to custom kernel (where I got no experienced yet or if any custom kernel would support it). For me is now stop with this througts but just to test it I will install an custom kernel with cfis support to see how it will be works.
Thx all for help.
