UMS Mounter - Galaxy Note II General

Hi all,
First thread here .
So, on with it. I've been a member on this forum for quite some time, but never felt like posting or anything as I didn't have anything interesting to share and all the questions I might've got at some point got already answered...
Anyway, about a year a go I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III. Cute little 'monster', powerful and all... and I got hit by MTP. I'm a Linux user, so getting MTP to work was a huge pain. So I started reading, digging, found out that some guys already implemented some scripts for mounting the external SD as UMS... the problem was that they didn't work on my end.
So I developed my own little app. Nothin' fancy, two buttons to switch from MTP to UMS and back.
In the meanwhile, I changed my phone to a Note 2 LTE and did some more tweaking on my app and now I'm kinda ready to share it with you guys:laugh:.
You need to have a rooted phone equipped with busybox (my app will prompt warnings telling you you're not rooted or you don't have busybox, but I thought it was nice to tell you here the requirements).
One small thing, besides the usual "I'm not responsible to any damages brought to your phone and all": after transferring to / from your SD card, please use the eject command (or the safety remove feature on Windows) to unbind the card from your operating system before changing back to UMS. That way you ensure no harm is brought to you SD card or to the data on it.
All that being said, you can download the app from here: devver.ro/ums-mounter/ (I don't have enough posts to give an external link, so you'll have to enter the text manually in your browser). The text on that page is written both in Romanian (my native language) and English so there shouldn't be any problems .
This app should work on every device that has an SD card and runs Android 4.3+. Oh yeah, there might be some glitches on devices with Samsung's official releases (bummer, I know), but that's related to some screw-ups on their end, 'cause they're random from ROM to ROM.
Anyway, hope you'll like it (if you test it). If you have and problems, comment here and attach a logcat and I'll see if I'm smart enough to help you.

Version 1.1
Changes:
- please uninstall the previous version, as I've changed the signature on the file ;
- added a small sanity check which will force you to unplug your phone from the computer before switching between modes (hopefully this will also force you to safely remove the external sd card );
- fixed (i hope at least) the situation where the card is not mounted as usb on Touchwizz related ROMs;
As usual, the app can be downloaded from devver.ro/ums-mounter. Thanks again for testing .

It mounts the card slots (although it needs a reboot sometimes), but the PC shows up two empty usb slots and the sd card is not mounted.
Im running DN3 V5+.
I do hope you can fix it.
Thank you.

@erljayp: that's one ROM which is based on a stock ROM and, as I mentioned in my OP, there might be glitches woth 'em.
I'll setup my phone into dual booting so that's gonna be a bit easier to test these ROMs and hopefully sort them out.
Thanks for testing my little app

your app said that i haven't installed busybox yet. then i tried to install busybox from play store and it said the same. what problem?

I've used play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox to install busybox. Basically, after you install the app from the play store, you need to open it in order for it to actually download and install the busybox binaries. If you just downloaded the app from play store but didn't actually open it, that may be the problem

Now working in DN3 V5+, but I have fluctuating transfer rates. What is the average transfer rate you have?
Thank you.

@erljayp: i get about a maximum of 2 MB/s transferring a file bigger than 50-100 MB, which I find quite satisfying. Also, if I'm not mistaking, the transfer rates are influences by a lot of factors: the card's class, if you're transferring a lot of small files (mp3's, for example) etc.
Anyway, glad that sorted your problem. Like I said before, my app should now work not only on the DN3, but on all ROMs (CM11 based, AOSP, AOKP, ROM's based on the stock Samsung release). If you find a ROM that won't work, Iemme know and I'll see what's to be done about it .

You don't have to be connected to the computer. Try and run the following in the terminal emulator:
- su (if you didn't);
- mount > /sdcard/mount.log
And after that, on your internal storage you shall find a file called mount.log. Give me the contents of that file, please.

I think you ran the command including the dash ("-" sign).
Perhaps i didn't express myself well enough, sorry...
1). su (for gaining root access, no matter if you're doing this from the terminal emulator or from your pc);
2). mount > /sdcard/mount.log
Again, sorry for the confusion.

[app2sd] Installing applications on a flash card

App2sd from 4PDA
Fundamentally new script!
Harder! Better! Faster! Stronger! (c)
!!!Only for LG GT540 Optimus!!!
!!!Only for Android 2.1 version!!!
Applications are installed on a memory card full! Internal memory is when you install the application does not decrease!
Hi All!
I am glad to introduce you to a completely new script to install applications on your memory card.
Installation manualMandatory conditions:
1. To create two partitions on the card. First - fat32, second - ext2.
If you already have a partition ext2, it MUST re-create!
2. Place on sdcard into your fat32 partition two folders from archive - gsript and app2sd. Path must by: sdcard/gscript and sdcard/app2sd.
3. Reflash your phone using the formula: Hard reset -> Firmware -> Hard reset.
4. Make root.
Do not use z4root software
5. Install GScript Lite software from Market.
6. Use GScript Lite for run script.
During installation, you should see only two messages: "ext2 partition mounted, copying applications" and "Done! You can restart". If you see other messages - nothing happened.
7. Wait the bottom will be "Close" button to count down, click on it and then - reboot (not the phone itself will reboot and you need torestart the the phone !). Reloaded by phone (with knock drop call ... press and hold and select "Disable Phone" ... No script to reboot DO NOT USE!
Recommendations:1. Script may work fine with a memory card that is supplied when you buy the phone. But I recommend you use a memory card from a class 6 and above.
2. If you notice that when you unlock the device gave reports of mounting a memory card, these cards can not be used!
3. Do not remove sdcard! Did it, if your phone is power off.
4. You may turn on your device without sdcard, but programms installed after apply script will not work yet.
Liryc: When testing the script was installed applications totaling more than 600 megabytes, and the unit at the same time felt great! Naturally we must understand that the cold boot the phone itself slightly increased, but at the time of the machine is behaving very well, fast and stable.

If You need, i will place here rar pack for Android 1.6.
If you use this method, don't ever remove the SDcard. If you remove, your phone will not work.
This method also move /data/data to SDcard. That means data of stock apps was moved to SDcard, and stock apps can't run without it.
Don't ever do a factory reset too. App2sd will gone after factory reset, that means there's no data for stock apps too.
The old method is safer than this one.
Could also find yourself in a big problem if you had an sdcard failure

Not exactly. Memory card can pull out your phone and boot the phone without the memory card is also possible, only you will not run any application installed from the Market or by appinstaller. However, all applications that are installed in the firmware the phone will function normally. If you think that I'm wrong, then ask yourself .... why did my phone after many tests still work? About resetting to factory ... it should be done after you remove the memory card from your phone. It's simple ... need only think of his head However, use this script or not - you decide!

Sorry, I didn't read the script carefully, it will just copy data to SDcard and will not move anything so data of stock apps is still on the phone memory.
busybox cp -r -p /data/app /system/sdcard ;

I'm sure putting and using apps on the sdcard can't surely increase its performance that drastically. Or can it?

[Q] Multiboot - Share apps between ROMS?

Hello,
I wanted to know if there's any way to "share" the apps installed on each ROM so I don't have to be installing them each time I add a new ROM. I've searched the forums and I only found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872742 which is quite old and things might have changed by now. I also understand that I won't be able to share *every* app as some of them are Froyo/GB/ICS/JB specific.
Thanks!

Real to Virtual :
You can browse /fshook/mounts/data/apps to find the apps in real system. However TB is the best way to go.
Virtual to Real :
In terminal emulator,
Code:
su
mkdir -p /data/local/mnt/data
mount -o loop -t ext3 /mnt/sdcard/multiboot/<Vfs name>/data.img /data/local/mnt/data
Then you can browse /data/local/mnt/data for apps. After completing installing,
Code:
su
umount /data/local/mnt/data
Thank you very much royale1223! I thought about TB but I wanted to know if there was any other method. I presume that if I go to /fshook/mounts/data/apps in the VS I will able to install them in the VS or will I be able to run then directly?

[Q] Empty CIFS-mounted directories

I'm currently running an OMNI build for everest, which is working delightfully well. The only thing I can't seem to achieve is to mount a CIFS directory. Actually, it can be mounted, but its contents are only visible to root.
While doing some research I found this thread. For what the description says, I assume this fix has been applied in CM, since I was able to mount CIFS (outside of /storage) before switching from CM to OMNI.
Would these patches be applicable for OMNI? If so, I would try to ask the everest ROM creator to apply them, or even try myself. But I'm afraid I may be lacking the knowledge to judge whether it'd just be a waste of time.
Thanks in advance for any tips on this matter.
Any update on the topic? I've tried Omni on my Nexus 10 and it runs perfectly well but this is the last thing that stops me from using the ROM. After mounting the data from my CIFS or NFS share the data is only available from the app performing the mount. The patches in the link from the previous post seems to work around this issue, is there any chance it could be applied to OmniROM?
Try to mount your folders manually (or by GScript) with Superusers --mount-master switch to make the mounts available to all processes. Something like this.
The su binary now also has a "--mount-master" option that connects you to a su session in the main mount namespace. Mount commands in this session should affect all processes. This is still a bit experimental, and getting it working requires a reboot after upgrading the binaries from a pre-1.93 version. This feature has been asked for a lot by devs, and it escapes the need to hijack system services to affect system-wide mounts, which is becoming more complicated with every Android release. A new version of StickMount will be released in a few days as well, taking advantage of this feature, and thus avoiding a number of issues some are seeing.

Alternatively, there is still the possibility to hijack a system service (like SSH one) to point to a script instead that will bring up your mounts. I'm personally using this so i haven't checked the SU method yet.
Good Luck!

Internal SD Card Paths

Hey guys,
Quick newbie question for you. I followed the procedure in this thread ([ROM][5.1.1][LMY47V] 21 May- Stock Flashable Rom/Factory Image) to a T and have 5.1.1 on the Nexus 4 but for some reason my internal SD card paths are all messed up. I couldn't use my camera to take a photo - it wouldn't save anywhere.
I used Terminal to run the restorecon -FR command for /data/media/0/* and then I restarted the phone and I could use my camera, so that was a good step.
Now I'm in WhatsApp and I can't see any media that people are sending me. The photos stay blurry. Is WhatsApp pointing to a directory that doesn't exist? How can I solve that? Or is my internal SD card ****ed?
I am using TWRP so if you have any solutions I can fully utilize that to fix the path errors or re-flash system img or whatever you think will work! My brother is trying to send me photos through WhatsApp and I can't see 'em!
Any help is appreciated!

You mean the flash_all.bat? Nah - I manually flashed as per the forum thread I linked to. I installed through TWRP, not fastboot. My Nexus 4 only connects as an AC source so I can't even get it communicating with my PC to unroot and flash stock.
So the phone is not recognized in OS X, window, or Linux? Tried different USB cables and USB ports?

Yeah I've pretty much tried everything to get it communicating with the computer again. I think it's a hardware issue - I had my screen replaced and I think some part of the battery assembly wasn't re-installed properly and thus communication ceased. I thought flashing to 5.1.1 would fix what could have been a 4.4.4 issue, as I had USB fast charge enabled with various kernels, but alas this was not to be.
Any ideas about the internal paths?
A screen replacement does involve moving the USB charging port to the new screen and it is possible that this part was damaged and vertical seems to be the case. I assume you don't have access to another phone to test the port.

Yeah no other phone to test the port. I just got an X Play and am using the same cable I was using with my Nexus 4 and communication is flawless - adb, fastboot, all the goodies. I thnk I'll need to take the Nexus to a shop or open it up myself.
Thanks for paying attention to this thread, audit.
Try opening the phone yourself as it is pretty easy but that choice is yours. Good luck!.
Hi Mike, just a hint... did you check the partition status on your device ? To check if it's a logical or hardware issue, here's a reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-play/general/partition-layout-t3196367
You can analyze yours with something like: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cls.partition
and eventually mount manually the missing mounts.

Thanks for your reply.
mounts & partitions
@XxMikeMasterxX Yes! In terminal emulator.
Code:
su
cat /proc/mounts
- or -
mount
- or -
df
- or -
cat /proc/partitions
to list all partitions/devices/... a bit messy output
The mount command is also what you'll need after you find the problem.
It can mount a partition, remount read-write...in case it's a permission problem, or bind a folder to another, in case it's looking for a specific folder, but your system named it in a different way.
Not sure if this applies to your case...just an idea Did your partitions check return any anomaly ?

Not that I can see. I'm a bit of a noob with Terminal so I'll even have difficulty identifying the erroneous file paths. It's too bad my adb and fastboot don't work. Or else I'd just revert to stock and re-flash everything.
@XxMikeMasterxX If you don't want to mess with terminal, try using the app linked in my first message then (or others that show mount points and partition details), and please use this as a reference. I posted the MXP one by mistake !!!

@dev>null Eeeek! Scared! I'll try the app and see what I can see. I guess from there it's a simple remount.
So hypothetically let's say that sdcard is mounted somewhere else by mistake and some app folders end up on the wrong partition/location, do I use a remount to remount that particular folder/location to the proper sdcard path?
Whoa I think I just got it.
@XxMikeMasterxX Exactly! There used to be a bug in CM with wrong sdcard mount point. Take a look at this, I'm sure it will address you to the right direction
And also give you examples for command syntax...

You're the man. I'll try it soon. My brother has the phone now so it could be a bit.

My brother tried the Terminal commands but after he entered su and tried the other 4 commands Term returned "nothing found" each time. What does that mean?
Also, it appears that he needs to remlunt his entire SD card somewhere. What's the folder? Root/sfcard
@XxMikeMasterxX Nexus 4 does not have a physical sdcard, so I guess it's just a missing symbolic link.
Try:
Code:
su
mount -o bind /data/media /sdcard
and see if Whatsapp can save the images now.

Thanks for your recommendations. Yet again, though, the command you provided didn't work. I tried to get him to bind different locations to sdcard but that didn't help either.
A funny thing he told me is that under Settings>Storage he can't open the Internal storage section. He said it just doesn't open.
It's almost like Android installed to a really weird location and isn't recognizing anything. I am really baffled.
I checked out the guide - the o ly problem.is that the phone doesn't connect as a USB device (broken link...battery maybe?) and as such he can't run the adb commands.
I wish it did connect USB though - I'd just have him return to stock and then this would all be erased. Any other ideas, dev? I really don't know what to do next... Thanks for your ideas so far - you've been a great help.

How can I get write access to smb network shares mounted via Shield Experience 7.2.2?

The option to mount network shares is nice but only grants read permissions to the shares.
I know it's because of security concerns, I also know there's some api and app whitelisting allowing Plex app write permissions.
I don't use the Plex app.
My Shield is rooted through Magisk.
I want all my installed apps to have write permissions to the shares. Imho Shield Experience should allow the user to make this decision.
Without write permissions, for me the mount option is useless.
Can anyone help me to get write permissions to my mounted shares?
ABSOLUTELY ++++++1000000 for this.
Did you get this working @trohn_javolta !??!
That's exactly my problem !! I have two ShieldTV (2017 / 16GB / 8.0.1). Both successfully rooted with Magisk.
How can I give all my installed apps WRITE RIGHTS to my network drive (NAS)?!? Or even specific apps I CAN CHOOSE !!!
It is very annoying that eg RetroArch can not save the scores, savestats, controller settings, ...
Or even xFile Explorer can not write to the my NAS.
IMHO, as long as i am rootet, i should decide by my own how "secure" i want my system !!
Please help us to write on a network drive as normal.
On my Phone i can write to my NAS (ES File explorer) without any problems... So why is the shield not allowed?!
Thank you

Hi, yes I managed to do so Idk if I recall all required steps but I'll try. Let me know if it worked.
First in Magisk Manager Settings under "mount namespace" set "global namespace".
Then under Download, search and install the Busybox module and restart your shield.
Now open up a terminal, I prefer Termux. Type su, enter.
Now you create the folder where you'll mount your smb share to. Make sure it's in /mnt/cifs:
mkdir -p /mnt/cifs
mkdir -p /mnt/cifs/hdd
chmod -R 777 /mnt/cifs
mount -t cifs -o username=<username>,password=<pw>,rw,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0666,iocharset=utf8,noperm,sec=ntlmssp,rsize=32768,wsize=32768 "//<ip>/<path to share>" /mnt/cifs/hdd
Since this has to be executed after every reboot, I set up a profile in Tasker App that does this automatically after a reboot. Hope this works for you :good:

No problem, hope it works.
It's a shame that this still isn't possible without root on latest Shield Experience!
Btw: Are you on latest Shield Experience 8.0.1 (Android Pie) or did you also stay on 7.2.3?

Many thanks for the help !! I am already at 8.0.1 ... Hopefully your workaround will still work: - /
Yes, it is really a shame for nvidia that it is still not possible to have write access to its own network drives.
Above all, this restriction is not widely publicized. I had to deal with it for a long time and I've been looking for the bug for a very long time ON MY SIDE, until I read on the Internet that this problem (write permission on network) is caused by the shield.
Anyway thank you very much for your tips - I'll try it that way and maybe later in the evening i can report.
Currently i am at work and come home later... :good:
Okay... I just tried your tips but got an error from Terminux, that my NAS is read only
So same problem as before... Damn.

Hmmm.. and you did use username and password? Cause it's not in the command on the screenshot.
The message suggests that the share you're trying to mount is read only.
Hello and thanks for the answer.
I have entered the commands exactly as you told.
Terminux does not display the complete command, but I entered PW and USER correctly
I had to do it with controller, because I had no keyboard and mouse available. But i don't think i did any mistakes.
At the moment I use the app "FolderSync" and matched the required folder directly under the two shields.
That's an ugly workaround, but it works ...
Anyway, I thank you very much for the tips and the hint. I will try again with keyboard later maybe...
Still find it very sad from nVidia that they does not give us the freedom (write on NAS) on our own devices

Make sure to hit the "reply button" under my post, this way I get notified upon your answer :good:
Did you unmount the share via the offcial way before trying to mount in terminal? I mean go to settings -> storage and unmount the share there?
I'll take the leap shortly and will update to latest shield experience version...I just have to decide whether to wait for another update or not.
I'll report back but I see no reason why it shouldn't work on pie.

Hello and thank u for your answer.
I tried again WITH keybord *g* and unmount my NAS before.
THIS time something seem to work, cause Terminux Output sais "Operation beeing performed..." (or beeing executed or something like this).
But another 2 hourl later nothing changed... i restart my shield but only the cifs folder disapeared.
No write access
Did you tried with Shield experience 8.0.1
Thank you

Hmm.. ok. It is expected behaviour that the cifs folder is gone after reboot, that's why I use Tasker to automatically create it and execute mount command after every reboot.
Is it possible that maybe Termux didn't get root rights? You can check that by opening Magisk Manager app and going to "Superuser" tab. There should be Termux entry and root rights enabled, if not do so and try again. I always go to the settings in Magisk Manager first and set "automatically grant root rights".

Yeah... I remember - you already told me about this problem at reboot.
Is it possible to get your Tasker Profile for that *g*
I know Tasker and already use it on my phone...

It's a really simple one. As event I chose "booting device" and as task I use a simple execute shell task.
I did more digging and maybe can give more info. Just as a quick checklist:
You installed busybox magisk module? (maybe not required for mount command)
SE Linux mode is set to permissive? (maybe not required anymore, if successfull can be disabled later)
In Magisk Manager settings set "global mount namespace"?
By having magisk flashed, you should already get su and mount commands..
You can try changing the mount command a bit, I found sth. that might work:
su -mm -c mount -t cifs -o username=<username>,password=<pw>,rw,dir_mode=0777 ,file_mode=0666,iocharset=utf8,noperm,sec=ntlmssp, rsize=32768,wsize=32768 "//<ip>/<path to share>" /mnt/cifs/hdd
mm means mount master and should force everything to run in the global mount namespace (so the share can be accessed by every app with read/write permissions, not only with Termux)
