Hi there folks,
I havent messed around with rooting etc my phone in a while. I rooted last year when it was available to do so but have not updated since. Now that 5.0 is out i have a couple questions for updating ( getting tired of the ota message every day from Verizon to update) sorry if this has been answered already but just trying to get an idea on what to do. Currently, im on 4.4.2. What is the best way to update now and can i root 5.0?
should i follow this guide to go back to stock and then update ota and then root?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
I thank you for any help.
thanks

I've followed the instructions on rooting my Nexus 4 along with all subsequent updates from nexus4root.com
However, that site has been inactive since 26Nov, 2013.
So I'm running a rooted stock 4.4 KRT16S and have got the 4.4.2 OTA update sitting on my phone waiting to get installed.
Please help me with advice on one of these two options:
1] A link to a file and instructions where I can update from 4.4 rooted to 4.4.2 rooted.
or
2] Will enabling OTA survival on my SuperSU v1.86 and then tapping on the OTA 4.4.2 on my device work?
Much thanks in advance
Cal.

Downloaded the factory image of 4.4.2 and flash. Since you are rooted do a nandroid backup, a Titanium Backup, and backup your sdcard because all of it will be wiped. This is if you are determined to have the stock 4.4.2 this is the only thing I can think of to get there.
You can also try a custom rom as well.

Thank you Berry.
Wouldn't that cause me to lose root?
Supersu paid version is the only one that has survival mode(or originally was) and that's not guaranteed.
Definitely won't survive a factory image flash.
I know it works OTA from 4.3 to 4.4 but haven't tried 4.4,1 to 4.4.2. Should work and if it doesn't it is easy enough to re root.
Any problems feel free to ask.

Yes, it would. Do this (only) if you are determined to run stock 4.4.2.
Sorry for the delay, if you don't quote, I won't get a notification.

You'll lose it but then just flash back supersu zip file and you're back rocking a rooted nexus. And btw, you don't need to flash factory image for 4.4.2. Just go to general section and look for a thread name OTA Helpdesk (use search option mate ) and flash/sideload the OTA file in recovery (preferably stock recovery or you can use twrp but cwm is a no go for OTA). Then flash back supersu. This is the easiest way and you still keep all your apps/data intact.

My bad, though I learnt something new there
Another of your comments made me decide to take the alternative ROM plunge.
So (deep breath) I've just flashed Paranoid Android's most recent rom
Loving the multi tiles within quick settings feature.
For the first half hour I kept trying to figure out where PA's setting are. After quite a bit of searching online, I found out that since it's being newly developed on KitKat, there are no PA settings at this point. Hope I've got that right?
Much thanks

That was the perfect thread which answered my original query. Thank you and Bladebuddy
Currently I am on MK2, with root access (stock ATT) I got a notification for software update is available, but when I try to install, it fails in between. Is it because of root access? Please suggest.
Not to be rude, but if you read a little bit of the threads you'd find that you CANNOT install an OTA update while you're rooted!
You have to un-root your phone if you want to install any OTA updates.

Best way to prepare for official OTA is just Odin back to stock, then just accept the update, 2 step process easy as pie. Tar files are here on XDA, but your search button seems to be broken so let me help you.
Here you go. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 Good luck.

Thanks for your response. I kept the ODIN back to stock as last option. Just want to make sure that, that is the way to do it. I just dont want to go back to stock, if there is an another option.

Sorry buddy, but there is no other way. If you want to update to official stock 4.4.2 Kit Kat firmware, you must be on official stock firmware. If you'd rather not be stock, then stay on MK2 like many of us are doing until we have root. I imagine it will be in the not too distant future. Look at the progress these developers have made in just a few days. It's remarkable.

Ermagerd. OTA is live. Just tested myself by unfreezing software update and checking ota. Large file. 683 mb. C'mon rooty goodness
Sorry, its been years since I last rooted a phone. If I'm rooted I cannot do the OTA right? I would have to have a custom recovery and flash it like that right?

That's correct. You can follow the return to stock method to go back to stock unrooted and ota but doing so may result in you not being able to root as there is no root method for 5.0 yet. Either wait for stock rooted to be posted by one of your awesome devs (should be soon. they are usually quick to offer stock rooted ota pkgs) or go straight stock. Since I read news today that xposed is going live for lollipop soon I am going to wait for stock rooted ota.

I am also thinking to wait for the rooted stock one to be posted... Currently on Illusion rom and its running great.. Some bugs, but can live with it until stock one arrives.. Good advise @BreakingVZW.. Thanks..
I unrooted and factory re-set the phone. Two different root checkers say I am not rooted. However, I get a message that I cannot update because a root is detected!!! Have tried 3 times now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Lol Idk if it will be only a couple of hours. That'd be nice but our devs have lives and do this stuff in their spare time. In theory they SHOULD be able to follow the same method devs from the international versions used to give users their rooted ota updates but sometimes it's just not that easy. This is the first US carrier release for the G3 so there may be security updates that weren't present in the international releases.

You restored stock via flash tools ? That'd be a first I've heard of persistent root after a pure factory reset via that method. Did you get the green pass message when completed and all?
You may want to attempt a 10D flash instead of 10f. I never have issues restoring with 10d

Camera API?
Does anyone know if the Lolipop update has the new Lolipop camera API?
Hope they will release it for d855 soon.

Yes 5.0. But at&t got 5.0.1 if im not mistaking.
Yep it has: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...rly-700mb-d85020f-update-packs-android-5-0-1/
it may be harder for ATT g3 to get a L flashable rom due to lack of KDZ for ATT devices.. where the international users can just split the KDZ and repack into zip.
if someone wants to send me an AT&T g3 I can make one though

So the method of pre-rooting won't work with D850 lollipop BC it uses tot? KitKat for our variant uses tot as well and they still got us a rooted ota 10f update. Most posts I've read about G3 lollipop (lg stock not aosp) have said in order to have root on Lollipop you have to be on KitKat to use the same exploit used on KitKat. Is that not a viable solution anymore? I actually like the lg stock ROM and features. If we can't root the stock g3 rom on lollipop I'm going to have to look into getting a nexus 6 and will sell this. Xposed is apparently up and running well with lollipop and I gotsta has me ma xposed.
How is the 5.0.1 update running? Hope that the D855 version will be releasing soon. I'm on 5.0 V20H version and it's runs great

Don't know. I want to OTA and all but I need root. I use many programs that require root and just not having the ability to remove bloatware is reason enough for me to wait for a rooted OTA. Really hope one of the devs can figure out how to make a flashable OTA zip.

10f had a rom because there was still root on 10f and you could backup system, boot and modem.
someone may have another solution worked out.. or even a tot to pull the files from. but it's not going to be as easy as it was previously due to no public root for L at the moment, the difficulty of getting a tot and lack of KDZ. Unfortunately I only have the T-Mobile version.. otherwise I'd be able to make one for you guys.
Hello,
I have an LG G2 802 international with kitkat 4.4.2
I,ve rooted it two weeks ago using ioroot.
Then i thougt about unrooting so it want cause me problems when installing the new lollipop update theough OTA.
I have two questions:
1- is unrooting through supsersu enough?.
2- the update is still not showing up in system updates, I'm in saudi arabia, will it still showup or is it because i was rooted?
Thanks in advance.
You might have better luck if you posted in the regular G2 forum - this one is specific for the Verizon variant VS980.
As a general guideline, taking an OTA while rooted is a setup for a headache, to many things can go wrong and mess up the update, leaving you with a brick.

Oh, I'm sorry, I was following another post, then went to the forum without realizing it's for the Verizon version.
Thanks for you advice.

Thanks vklexer, I did run the full unroot option in SuperSu, now when I put the device in download Mode, it tell me I'm unrooted
But Lollipop didn't show up yet, that's why I had doubts.
I guess I'll have to wait a couple of days before the update shows up.

Just wondering what the consensus on rooting I9505G running Android 5.1 is. Mine hasn't been rooted since it upgraded to Lollipop a long while ago, but I'm looking to re-root now. However, I can't seem to find any threads on it post the 4.4-era.
Previously, I used ChainFire's CF Auto-Root tool, but the top line of the thread now says it won't work on any Samsung phone running Android 5.1. I imagine someone out there has to have a rooted I9505G - any tips? Thanks in advance.
While this probably belongs in Q&A, you can root the stock firmware this way. I used this method to root the latest 5.1 OTA just a few days ago. Hope that helps.
