Wait 5.0 or root 4.4.4 - Xperia Z2 General

Hi.
I have a sort of a dilema. I really want root on my 4.4.4 z2, but I also want to wait for the 5.0 update. I know cyanogenmod 12 has 5.0, but I want the Sony stock 5.0. Do you have any pros and cons for waiting and pros and cons for rooting it now?
Thx

Root the 4.4.2 then wait for existenz 5.0(5.0 lollipop)
Because root will not come immidiately for 5.0

I would root and wait for someone to make a pre-rooted version of 5.0.2
Its going to happen the day sony releases Lolipop for Xperias

Okey, thank you
edit: Thank you both

Root for lollipop is gonna take ages to find for sure.. You can root right now but updating to lollipop will make you lose it

No it won't. If your rooted now you'll just need to flash a rooted lollipop zip in recovery.

root it man :good:

Just root it..

Firstly, i think thread belongs to question and answer section.
Secondly, just root it.
If you were in dire need of root, you would have done it without asking anyways so it seems root isn't really important to you

He is right, you misunderstood this guy. You will lose root if you upgrade to a non-rooted lollipop. But I get you, the easiest way will be flashing a pre-rooted lollipop... But I think we'll have to wait a few years before we finally get it.

I want to upgrade from MLG to NC2 too. However, there is no direct way to do it at the moment.
However, if you are still at A2, you can use Safestrap to switch between MJ5 and NC2 (Please don't flash NC2 aboot.mbn!!!!!!)
Yes there is just do the mj5 restore that is in this section then follow one of the guides on how to install the ota

As Jerrycoffman said. . . .
Restore back to MJ5 using this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715
Don't root using the last part. It removes knox which will block you from being able to update the phone.
Next there will be a OTA to install its around 60mb. This is NB4
Lastly, just download kitkat OTA that's available. This may take sometime because it is a larger file size.
A lot of people have had issues installing the Kitkat OTA (including me). It fails at a certain percentage.
If you have this problem just follow this guide to fix it - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701062
Make sure you back up any apps and files you need before starting this
Honestly instead of upgrading to official KK, why don't you just root and flash of of the available KK rom which is so much better than stock. Unless you don't care about the custom rom and root, you can follow what other has suggested to get the official OTA. Once you update thought, no way to get it root anymore

There is absolutely NO reason, if you follow instructions correctly, to accept the official update. Been there, done that. Glad I returned my OFFICIAL 4.4.2 phone and got another one to keep root on!!!

Isis can work on kit kat. I had it working but changed to wallet out of principal

Best solution:
Go to Best Buy and ask one of the Samsung people to get you to stock, in less than 10 to 15 minutes you'll be in OTA Kit Kat.
No reason to have OTA kitkat when you lose root.
I use ISIS daily with the following mod

Update using ota or keep root (noob)

Greetings! Im new to the rooting scene and i have a rooted note 3 on 4.3. I would like to know if it is better to install the ota update then root again or just flash a new rom that is kitkat already.
Thanks in advance.

You cannot OTA update since you have rooted. You can only download stock firmware and flash via Odin. And yes, you have to root again, also via Odin.
A new (custom) rom is another option, I have no idea with it.
For the time being, I would browse the Note 3 Android Development forum and see if a custom ROM is what you want. If it is, then by all means go ahead and flash one. If not, then upgrading to 4.4.2 and rooting is the best bet. Personally, I was on stock 4.4.2 rooted, and it didn't take long for me to flash a custom ROM. I'm on my third custom ROM in a month, so it can definitely get addicting.
You can update via OTA.
Thereafter, flash the old kernel xxund3.
root via towel root, and reflash the Kernel that came with the OTA update.
All via Odin. I don't think there's any way to do it, yet, and at the same time keeping knox 0x0.

Cheers!

AT&T D850 Lollipop has been pushed!

Ermagerd. OTA is live. Just tested myself by unfreezing software update and checking ota. Large file. 683 mb. C'mon rooty goodness
Sorry, its been years since I last rooted a phone. If I'm rooted I cannot do the OTA right? I would have to have a custom recovery and flash it like that right?

That's correct. You can follow the return to stock method to go back to stock unrooted and ota but doing so may result in you not being able to root as there is no root method for 5.0 yet. Either wait for stock rooted to be posted by one of your awesome devs (should be soon. they are usually quick to offer stock rooted ota pkgs) or go straight stock. Since I read news today that xposed is going live for lollipop soon I am going to wait for stock rooted ota.

I unrooted and factory re-set the phone. Two different root checkers say I am not rooted. However, I get a message that I cannot update because a root is detected!!! Have tried 3 times now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Lol Idk if it will be only a couple of hours. That'd be nice but our devs have lives and do this stuff in their spare time. In theory they SHOULD be able to follow the same method devs from the international versions used to give users their rooted ota updates but sometimes it's just not that easy. This is the first US carrier release for the G3 so there may be security updates that weren't present in the international releases.

You restored stock via flash tools ? That'd be a first I've heard of persistent root after a pure factory reset via that method. Did you get the green pass message when completed and all?
You may want to attempt a 10D flash instead of 10f. I never have issues restoring with 10d

Yes 5.0. But at&t got 5.0.1 if im not mistaking.
Yep it has: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...rly-700mb-d85020f-update-packs-android-5-0-1/
it may be harder for ATT g3 to get a L flashable rom due to lack of KDZ for ATT devices.. where the international users can just split the KDZ and repack into zip.
if someone wants to send me an AT&T g3 I can make one though

So the method of pre-rooting won't work with D850 lollipop BC it uses tot? KitKat for our variant uses tot as well and they still got us a rooted ota 10f update. Most posts I've read about G3 lollipop (lg stock not aosp) have said in order to have root on Lollipop you have to be on KitKat to use the same exploit used on KitKat. Is that not a viable solution anymore? I actually like the lg stock ROM and features. If we can't root the stock g3 rom on lollipop I'm going to have to look into getting a nexus 6 and will sell this. Xposed is apparently up and running well with lollipop and I gotsta has me ma xposed.
How is the 5.0.1 update running? Hope that the D855 version will be releasing soon. I'm on 5.0 V20H version and it's runs great

Don't know. I want to OTA and all but I need root. I use many programs that require root and just not having the ability to remove bloatware is reason enough for me to wait for a rooted OTA. Really hope one of the devs can figure out how to make a flashable OTA zip.

10f had a rom because there was still root on 10f and you could backup system, boot and modem.
someone may have another solution worked out.. or even a tot to pull the files from. but it's not going to be as easy as it was previously due to no public root for L at the moment, the difficulty of getting a tot and lack of KDZ. Unfortunately I only have the T-Mobile version.. otherwise I'd be able to make one for you guys.

Root before taking Lollipop update?

Hey guys. Have a new G2 on the way. I had one a few months ago and used Stump Root to get it rooted. I never flashed any ROMs or even a custom recovery. Just rooted so I could use Xposed.
When the new one arrives do I need to root before taking the Lollipop update? Will it keep root? Or should I root after Lollipop, if Lollipop has even been rooted.
Thanks for the help!

i just tried to take the OTA thursday night and it put my g2 into boot loop. i had to go into recovery and restore previous backup.
i think your gonna need to take the update then root, i'm trying to figure out how to unroot so i can then take to OTA then root again. i want to try the Xenon HD rom afterwards
you might get lucky and it come with the update already if you just ordered it

Please correct me if i am wrong

Hello guys,
Please excuse my noobish question, but i need to find some good answer.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, model number SM-N9005 with Android version 4.4.2.
The phablet is rooted thanks to Towelroot. And from there i install Titanium Backup and many others intersting stuff that need/or not root.
I enjoyed Xposed and i'm thinking i want to enjoy CyanogenMod also.
Now ... my problems is that i am very confused about what i have to do next.
And after i spent some time to research this, i've come here for some guidance because i fell that i'm running in circle.
My questions are :
Do i have to upgrade to Lollipop first ?
Do i have to unroot from Towelroot and root again with Odin ?
As i saw that steps are as follow:
1. Need root
2. Install TWRP
3. CyanogenMod (as i saw 12 is the last and it's good for my device)
Many thanks !

1. Unique way to update to Lollipop (if you are rooted) is via ODIN. I don't recommend you update anyway. I still with android 4.4.2.
2. No. Only flash the new firmware via ODIN and root it then with ODIN too.
3. I don't recommend you install CyanogenMod if you are noob.
If you do want CyanogenMod, you only need to install TWRP, and then flash latest CM-12.1 nightly build in recovery. You do need to wipe /data first, though which means you will lose your apps and settings.
Always make backups!

So why do you dont recommend to me to upgrade to Lollipop ?
Is Kit Kat better at this time than Lollipop ?
If i will update via ODIN, is there a better way to do that ?
And ... Still have my question about what if i'll unroot (and how can i do that safe) and root it by examples via ODIN and then follow others tutorials with TWRP and CyanogenMod. I'm not confortable via ODIN (but if i find some good, trusted tutorials, i want to try it) because as i told you before i rooted my phablet, the easy way via Towelroot.

If you want a CM rom just flash recovery with odin. No need to root. Then backup your phone and flash the CM rom. No need to upgrade to lollipop either.
However if you want a lollipop TW based rom it's better to upgrade to lollipop first. Nevertheless you can still try lollipop TW custom rom without upgrading to lollipop first but some functions may not work well.
If you can root your phone with Towelroot and you don't want to use odin to flash the recovery, you may do so by dd with terminal emulator.
