I want to upgrade from MLG to NC2 too. However, there is no direct way to do it at the moment.
However, if you are still at A2, you can use Safestrap to switch between MJ5 and NC2 (Please don't flash NC2 aboot.mbn!!!!!!)
Yes there is just do the mj5 restore that is in this section then follow one of the guides on how to install the ota

Don't root using the last part. It removes knox which will block you from being able to update the phone.
Next there will be a OTA to install its around 60mb. This is NB4
Lastly, just download kitkat OTA that's available. This may take sometime because it is a larger file size.
A lot of people have had issues installing the Kitkat OTA (including me). It fails at a certain percentage.
If you have this problem just follow this guide to fix it - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701062
Make sure you back up any apps and files you need before starting this
Honestly instead of upgrading to official KK, why don't you just root and flash of of the available KK rom which is so much better than stock. Unless you don't care about the custom rom and root, you can follow what other has suggested to get the official OTA. Once you update thought, no way to get it root anymore

Isis can work on kit kat. I had it working but changed to wallet out of principal

Best solution:
Go to Best Buy and ask one of the Samsung people to get you to stock, in less than 10 to 15 minutes you'll be in OTA Kit Kat.
No reason to have OTA kitkat when you lose root.
I use ISIS daily with the following mod

I don't know what this means, in particular. Can you link me to something? I ran cyanogenmod up to 11 when my s3 died and have been out of the community for a bit. I just want to put the OTA kitkat update onto my phone and then get root.

You can get on kitkat if you flash a kitkat rom or by odining stock NAE tar file (Please note that this will give you knox bootloader). If you visit Sacs Custom Rom 4.4.2 kitkat rom (link in my signature below). It will explain how to go from a previous version to his kitkat rom.
Basically, in a nutshell...you need to have the NAE modem (which is explained in the thread) and specific recoveries to use during flashing. Visit the thread to find out more
I've seen several posts on using the leaked 4.4. Has anyone successfully retained root after 4.4 ota using the official 4.3 currently rooted? I really don't want to install safestrap or the leaked 4.4 .
Also,
Whats the big deal about 4.4? Should I just freeze 4.3 to keep root?

If you want the already rooted 4.4, I'm pretty darn sure you MUST use safestrap. Otherwise, you are stuck with the un-rooted leak.
Yeah. Safestrap and the rooted leak is the only way to go.
I see what he is asking now. Has anyone who was running rooted 4.3 taken an official OTA update to kit kat and retained root.. Seeing as the official kit kat OTA on Verizon hasn't happened yet, nobody can say.

Yes this is exactly what I am asking. Thanks
I like the phone the way it is and have tweaked a few things with xposed and so I want to keep root. However if there is a wonderful new feature on 4.4 that I can't live without then I might need to figure out 4.4 root.
For now I am just going to freeze the update service.
Actually the official OTA is probably going to be very bad and we may not be able to do as much with it. May not even get root. The leaked version is tweaked for performance, and already rooted, and has some features that would never be in an official release. I highly recommend you go ahead with it and forget about trying to be the only guy on here that wants to wait for the official leak and possibly loose root in the process. You won't get much help rooting it when everybody is already on a rooted kit kat. Nobody is going to waste time with it.

From what I read a while ago Root Keeper does not work with 4.3. I checked and that is still the case. I can only assume it also would not work for 4.4.
I did read that SuperSU has a preserve root function. I think somewhere else I read you temp unroot then preserve root. After taking the OTA you enable root again.
Something like this.

The leaked version is a gold mine! It allows you to go back to 4.3 at any time via odin where as the official will not allow this. I am currently running leaked version and it is flawless. You dont have to have SafeStrap active after installing it just need to have it installed. I havent even opened SS since installing the leaked 4.4.2 update.

There are a few KK Roms that developers are posting in the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Android Development Forum. I'm currently on Bajasur's BajaRom Build 14 and it's running very smooth.
I just recently purchased a Verizon Note 3 and would like some takeoff advice with this device. It came loaded with JB 4.3 and MJE baseband. I would like to upgrade the present stock JB 4.3 to KK 4.4.2 utilizing the best tools for the job. With root, a new recovery, and a reliable wifi hotspot apk too. I have found that it helps to get advice from an experienced user before potentially taking a wrong first step in unknown territory... Been there, done that.

Oh also I stayed on the NC2 firmware when I went to kit kat from what I gathered in research its better than the NC4 for now
More importantly, is there anything that I MUST do while running JB4.3 that I can't do afterwards on 4.4.2? Like root with survival mode or something? Otherwise (from JB4.3) it looks like I could just install the OTA to 4.4.2 NC4 ... run Towelroot, install busybox, and then SafeStrap 3.72. So, is this a good or bad idea ???

I've been doing some reading in various places and have noticed that there are a good many people complaining about the 4.4.2 upgrade. Things like reception and battery issues...and the list goes on. They basically are saying that things were better before the update.
Would it be better (less problems overall) to upgrade via odin to 4.4.2 NC4...or just take the OTA route from the retail version 4.3 MJE...or should I stay on 4.3 and put up with the alleged GPS headaches...and bypass all the reception and battery issues?

Don't use the NC4 Odin or the OTA, root MJE then install a 4.4.2 ROM. That way you have the ability to go back to MJE if you want to, you can also try the different modems once you're on NC4 and find the one that works best for you.

Thanks airmaxx, but I thought I read that I could use odin to go back if I wanted to after rooting the OTA NC4 with towelroot. Besides, if there are problems (as I've read) with 4.4.2 NC4, then it would make more sense not to upgrade at all. Or is NC4 really that much better even with the poorer reception and battery issues? Now I'm wondering what makes the NC4 upgrade worth the time and effort. Thanks again for your thoughts.

You can downgrade from 4.4.2 (NC4) if you root MJE and install a pre-rooted version (ROM). The OTA and NC4 tar file have a different bootloader which prevents downgrading. I've had no problems with battery or signal on NC4, keep in mind that people usually post when they have problems but rarely pay when things are working fine.

The NC2 bootloader is really the one to be on. The basic steps can be found in the install instructions in this ROM thread, you can use any ROM, it doesn't have to be Jasmine. Just use steps 1-12. More detailed instructions can be found in this thread but use the Odin files from the first thread.

That's correct. You can follow the return to stock method to go back to stock unrooted and ota but doing so may result in you not being able to root as there is no root method for 5.0 yet. Either wait for stock rooted to be posted by one of your awesome devs (should be soon. they are usually quick to offer stock rooted ota pkgs) or go straight stock. Since I read news today that xposed is going live for lollipop soon I am going to wait for stock rooted ota.

Lol Idk if it will be only a couple of hours. That'd be nice but our devs have lives and do this stuff in their spare time. In theory they SHOULD be able to follow the same method devs from the international versions used to give users their rooted ota updates but sometimes it's just not that easy. This is the first US carrier release for the G3 so there may be security updates that weren't present in the international releases.

So the method of pre-rooting won't work with D850 lollipop BC it uses tot? KitKat for our variant uses tot as well and they still got us a rooted ota 10f update. Most posts I've read about G3 lollipop (lg stock not aosp) have said in order to have root on Lollipop you have to be on KitKat to use the same exploit used on KitKat. Is that not a viable solution anymore? I actually like the lg stock ROM and features. If we can't root the stock g3 rom on lollipop I'm going to have to look into getting a nexus 6 and will sell this. Xposed is apparently up and running well with lollipop and I gotsta has me ma xposed.

Don't know. I want to OTA and all but I need root. I use many programs that require root and just not having the ability to remove bloatware is reason enough for me to wait for a rooted OTA. Really hope one of the devs can figure out how to make a flashable OTA zip.

10f had a rom because there was still root on 10f and you could backup system, boot and modem.
someone may have another solution worked out.. or even a tot to pull the files from. but it's not going to be as easy as it was previously due to no public root for L at the moment, the difficulty of getting a tot and lack of KDZ. Unfortunately I only have the T-Mobile version.. otherwise I'd be able to make one for you guys.
