What if,We hard brick our phone? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,we all know that if we root or flash a custom recovery knox counter will be triggered & we'll loose our warranty. Now if the device faces some kind of hardware problem, can we hard brick our phone by flashing some wrong kernel & saying samsung that it's dead by its own? Also if download mode is available after hardbrick?
Sorry For the silly question
Im running a non rooted stock rom

I think they can see it. Cause after they revive it via their Jig they can see that it has been rooted

can someone advise please?

Hi
I have a new galaxy s4 on contract (unrooted, stock). I would like to try out some of the custom roms from this forum.
This will affect my warranty, counter etc.
I can use the Rom Manager app to take a backup of my system as it is now, If I need to take my galaxy s4 back to the store for
repairs etc., would a restore of this Rom Manager backup leave the phone EXACTLY as it was when I got it? including rom counter etc?
Would it also work on Kies? (I haven't used Kies yet but I understand that it recognises that a phone has been rooted / had custom
roms applied.
thank you

You have to flash custom recovery in order to flash custom rom, it means that your binary counter will increase, you can run triangle away if you have I9505 with no new firmware, then flash your stock rom before send it to warranty

Hi samersh72
thanks for the quick reply. Sorry but I'm not clear on it.
Are you saying that after flashing custom rom(s) I cannot reset the phone by restoring the Rom Manager backup I took before flashing custom roms? Why is that?
If that's the case:
I think triangle away on the gs4 only works on stock roms? Does that mean that to reset the phone I would have to flash stock rom first and then run triangle away?
Would the flashing / triangle away also remove root?

Sir you have a lot of reading to do. Have a look in the stick thread section for guides, tutorials and explanations. There are new security measures that will render your phone out of warranty with no way of returning it to stock condition. Read well.

1) root
2) flash custom recovery
3) make the nandroid backup for your stock firmware.
4) play with custom roms
5) restore your stock firmware, run triangle away, unroot, send it to warranty.
triangle away does not remove root. unroot by flashing stock.
PS. triangle away does not run on new firmwares. MH8, 6, GG ...
avoid flashing them at this moment. once flashed, you can not downgrade due to the locked bootloader

Downgrading your software is a security risk for Samsung, so you can't do it anymore.
Your flashing and fiddling probably triggered Knox and now your warranty is permanently gone.
Don't mess with your phone unless you know what you are doing.

ok...
from day 1 dont have Knox in odin downloading mode, only have Bit counter 0x0
And when i updated from Kies 3.0 then after lost my recovery mode and after re installing recovery mode through odin 1.83 then
Bit counter 0x1
I didn't install any custom rom or Auto root...
i am really confused...????
if it said 0x1 then the knox fuse is triggered and your warranty is void regardless.
Can you take a picture of download mode (odin mode) and post it so I make sure?
Yes I confirmed that warranty bit is 1 and there is no knox counter...
That means kies will remove warranty after updating....
So Samsung store will not give replacement of this device...???

Happy to tell all of you that Samsung store said my warranty is still valid and they downgraded my mj7 os to mj1...

Knox tripped device can't install any rom from recovery.

Hi all.
I have gt-i9505 and somehow I tripped knox efuse.
Now when i try to install any custom rom from cwm (flashed with odin) I get soft-brick I.e. bootloop where device is stuck on samsung logo.
If i try to flash modem (reception sux) and put device to sleep it disables 3G and wifi. Only restarting or manually reseting APN helps to restore 3G connection.
Flashing original roms with odin works fine.
Any help on installing custom rom or flashing modems will be highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Meant to reply instead of thank. Sorry!
You need to flash a 4.4.2 or 4.3 tar through ODIN. This will restore your phone but knox will of course remain tripped. Make sure you flash a radio for knox bootloader (4.4.2 or 4.3). I`m guessing you are using a radio for old bootloader. That is why you are getting these issues.
Once your phone is working, flash CF auto root in ODIN, then download ROM manager and flash CWM for your device (ie jfltexx if you have international version). Then
Thanks for quick reply.
One more stupid question:
How can I distinguish between radios for knox bootloader and regular ones?
I asuume it is in the radio name, but where?

Hi, first of all, download terminal emulator from playstore. Open it and type:
su (hit enter)
getprop ro.bootloader (hit enter)
It shows you a firmware version. Let's say, the last letters are NB8 for example. This means you are ready on the NB8 bootloader. So you need also the NB8 modem (baseband).
Hate to jack the thread but judging from what i am reading, there is a way to enjoy custom recovery and custom rom with knox tripped.
Sorry again but this knox thing is new to me and preventing me from customizing my device sch-i435 the sgs4mini verizon but being its the little version of the big boy I figured someone could enlighten me real quick. thanks and srry for the thread jack.
Yes there is no problem to install custom recovery. However custom rom has proved to be pain it tha A until now. I will try installing 4.4.2 by omega or wanam this weekend and update on how it went.

As I mentioned before:
No problem flashing custom recovery.
Also I just flashed Omega v24 custom rom based on original 4.4.2 and it works perfectly.
Apparently the problem was I was trying to install custom roms that didn't support new bootloader, which tripped my knox efuse in the first place.
For future reference: if you flashing knox enabled bootloader it will trip the efuse and void your warranty, but imho it totally worth it.

[Q] New to rooting

I have a Galaxy S5 SM-G900V Version 5.0 I am wondering if it is possible to root it any help would be greatly appreciated
If you read the post above yours, or any of the posts in this forum, you will probably figure out how to root your device. Pro tip!
I have read them and have tried several different ways but I must be missing something because when I flash my device it keeps going into boot recovery and I cant get it to go any further

You soft bricked it. I recommend using Kies 3 to repair and initialize the phone again to stock, unless you made a nandroid backup. Then, you'll have to flash a NK2 retail stock, since no one has been able to find a method to root AO8 Lollipop 5.0 without tripping knox. If you don't mind tripping knox, which voids your warranty.

you are wrong lmao.. we have root for the g900v (he must be having user errors if he cant get it to work) but there is NO process for the g900v that will trip Knox at all because we cant touch the BL due to it being locked.. Knox has nothing to do with anything at this point. His warranty is still good but yes, his phone is soft bricked if he cant boot up

Have you tried finding a full ncg tar file (full meaning it includes the kernel), Odin that to put you on ncg. Download towelroot and install it. Run towelroot and that should root you. Download latest safestrap and install it. Then download any other the rooted lollipop roms and the lollipop kernel(kernel will be downloaded on computer) . Install it via safestrap, boot directly into download mode and Odin the lollipop kernel. Reboot. Should be rooted lollipop and good to.
New too rooting
ok I managed to figure this all out i think I got it to restore back to 5.0 using odin by flashing the stock files I found on the forums then I found another tutorial on rooting and followed it and managed to figure it out so now I am running
Android Version
4.4.4
Baseband Version
G900VVRU1ANHA
Kernel Version
3.4.0
[email protected]#1
Build Number
KTU84P.G900VVRU1ANHA
I don't know if that means any thing to you guys but my next task is to find a rom that ultimately will get rid of allot of the boat from verizon and ideally I would like to have the multi user feature but I am not sure that is availible for android 4.4.4

Help with unrooting, going back to stock (damaged usb port)

Hi guys I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 G900F in the UK on 4.4.2 KitKat Stock Rom, rooted with towel root and Knox 0x0.
Unfortunately my usb port has damaged today and I cannot charge or connect to PC. I need to send my phone for repair to Samsung under warranty.
I understand they will factory reset my device after repair. So I need to unroot my phone and bring it back to official status without tripping the Knox counter. Can someone advice me how to get it back to official status? thanks
P.s. I did try to unroot it within the chainfire SuperSU app and it did unroot but however when I went to "about" phone to test the software update, it said my phone is modified. So any help here please. Thanks
It's various difficult and dangerous to unroot without the use of a PC. You can try to use mobile ODIN as that appears to be the only solution now.... or take the phone to a 3rd party shop.
What if i unroot within the Superuser app, and do a factory reset from settings, and then a factory reset from stock recovery? Would that do the trick?

No. I tried to unroot using the full unroot button and it unroofed but system was still custom. Have to reflash the stock firmware to get it back to official.

Mobile odin maybe, but not Flashfire as (I believe) with FF, you still need to use odin to flash bootloader and modem after the FF flash. If you are on 4.4.2 Mobile Odin should work, but not for 5.0 if i read correctly......
BUT....
You're in a catch 22 position, if the flash goes bad you can only recover with PC Odin, and at the moment, you can't.....this is entirely your choice, but if it were me, I'd not be risking it.....

Thank you, could you please advice me how to do this process, i am not familiar with kernals and mobile odin.
So far i have purchased the mobile odin pro app and downloaded stock firmware from sammobile and put it on the external sd card. And downloaded the kernal from post #13.
Some instructions would be greatful, thank you.

Ok...If you purchased the pro version, you won't need that flash kernel as mobile odin will download and install it for you.
The firmware needs to be unzipped to its tar md5 file.
Open the app, let it dl and install the flash kernel then use the in app file explorer to navigate to the firmware file location and select it. It will tell you what partitions have been loaded. Enable all the wipes (very importsnt), uncheck ever root and the option to re install mobile odin.
Then press start.....let Mobile Odin complete the md5 check then it will flash the firmware......
All you have to do is sit back and wait.

Hi mate, i just attempted to use mobile odin now and it gave me a message saying it will trip the knox counter on my device. That seems like it is defeating the purpose of my use? does it trip the Knox counter even when flashing stock firmware? please confirm. thanks
Oh? That's the first I've heard of that.....
I can't answer with any certainty as although I have used Mobile Odin on other devices, I've not yet used it on my S5......
Edit.......
This thread.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2843044
....would indicate that using mobile odin does NOT trip knox......
As far as i was aware, flashing Samsung 'signed' official software will leave knox intact.....it's only if you flash 'unsigned' unauthorised software that knox is triggered.....

It *is* hardware, and you could argue that it is reasonable to expect that it should last more than 2 years. It just depends on how it became damaged and whether there are any signs of 'unusual', unexpected damage.....

Just gave my phone in to the authorised samsung dealer, he inspected it and said it seems like a unusual damage, and its 50-50 if samsung will repair it under warranty but fingers crossed.
He also said if samsung see it as a damage than a fault, they will reject to fix it, and it would cost me £33 handling charge to get the phone back to the dealer who i submitted my phone to. So i will know in 5-10 working days.
Thanks
