[Q] Best video recording app? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Sorry if this has came up before - given what the question is it wouldn't surprise me if it had!
Does anyone know what the, generally accepted as, best video recording app for our phones are? After coming from iOS, the camera functions are the only part of the phone that I'm finding it hard to match the iPhone.
I generally take a lot of videos and edit them. Mini-movies aren't aren't at all uncommon for me to film.
Whilst I'm still using my iPad for editing the films (iMovie and so on), I'm anxious to continue to use (and enjoy doing so) my S4 for video recording. My old 5S shot incredible video and even at lower resolution settings the output was generally smoother than the S4 shoots at the same settings.
If I'm stuck with the quality of the video recordings, that's fine and I'll make do. I would just prefer to find an app that can shoot at higher than stock bit rate etc and give me as many options (or close to) that the apps on iOS offers. I came to android as I absolutely LOVE using lollipop and the way it works is brilliant, so as said if I need to continue as I am that's fine. If it helps I'm using GPE 5.0.1 at the moment. Please not I'm not looking to start an iOS vs android discussion, just looking to find out what options I may or may not have and what I might be missing in the Play Store.
Thanks guys,
Pete

Just using this camera app and defo seems to give a better result than TW or other apps I've used in the past, quick question though cause I can't seem to find it anywhere .. Does it allow use of the front facing camera?

that's the only downside. it doesn't have front camera support. just use the stock camera for front camera video capturing. :fingers-crossed: :good:

Nexus 4, does the camera have video stabilization?

It sooo important to me. My sgs2 does great videos, but all 100% of them look jumpy no matter how hard I try to move it smoothly. Big fail on the SGS3, but what about de nexus 4?
For me it's a deal breaker.
I hate smarthphones in general, but it's a moving camera.

If it does, none of the sample video I've seen so far has been taken with it turned on (kind of makes me seasick to watch it ). It's not a deal breaker for me, but it would be very nice if it were possible.

Yes me too, thanks for the reponse, I wish it will come with.
Doubt it, think only the iphone 4s/5 have video stabilization, and of course the new lumia 920.
Digital image stabilization is a gimmick and rarely works well. From seeing video comparisons, it basically crops the image in order to be able to compensate for the excessive movement, so the quality suffers.
Even if the stock app doesn't have digital image stabilization I'm sure it won't be long before the market app ICS+ Camera works on 4.2 (if it doesn't already already). You can just toggle stabilization in the settings.

Do you know an other way to do it
But I wish I will have this choice w Google software.
I know this a technique far from being perfect yet. But last year I went travelling with my SGS2, recorded more than 200Gb in videos, recorded a LOT, but in the end, most of the videos where useless, the vibration of the walking or of my inexpert turning ruined great moments. I gotta say thought I'm pretty happy with the record quality it's a good phone, but I think it's time with all this processing power that the video get's smoothed on the fly.
Anything Android phone with this feature it's gonna be my next phone.

Why not use a dedicated digital camera then?
They do still exist ya know...
Perhaps not in this version of android, but being a Nexus phone, you may see it in Android 4.3/5.0 (Wherever they decide to go next) and you'll get it the day it comes out!

ICS and Jellybean (4.12) has image stabilization so I don't see why they would remove the feature. So I'm going to say "yes" it will have it.
Someone asked if there was a better way of doing image stabilization and the answer is yes. The new Nokia 920 (Windows 8 phone) has optical image stabilization (the lens itself moves to compensate for any shaking). Apparently it's fantastic.
It's the same tech that's been in camcorders and camera for years. Just coming to phones now. According to the Engadget Mobile guys LG is working on their own optical image stabilization system but it's not ready yet.

Wow 200gb? If you were going to record that excessively, you should have used a dedicated camcorder, especially since you were traveling.
If you hate smartphones in general, and only want to use it for videos, you should get the Nokia 808.
Reopening now that people got the telephone, please let me know!
In case anyone is still looking for an answer it does not appear to support image stabilization. It is not in the options for the camera app, but I decided to go one step further and check the API.
Camera.Parameter.isVideoStabilizationSupported() on my Nexus 4 returns false. So I believe this is a definitive no.

[Req]Slow Motion Recording/editing app or z2 timeshift port

Hi,
So i recently got a s5 and unfortunately the slow motion feature on the s5 camera is not in the same level of functionality as its compitotors, like the z2 or m8 (and iphone 5s). I wanted the ability to record the video at the higer fps and then edit which part i wanted in slow motion.
The m8 does this, although cuts the sound (which im actually fine with), and the z2 also does this but keeping the sound and slowing it down also.
So my question or request is: Is there a app, mod or the possibility of one, or even a port of the z2 camera recording( i have seen some features of xperia cameras imported, but not this one), that will do this on the s5?
A user here on the forum suggested to me the app reAction, which does have the slow down effect, but it doesn't slow down a lot and not in the speed that i would like.
Thank you!
No one? :/ what i wanted basicly is an app that records 120fps but can also play it back at regular speed or that doesnt process it to slow down and so i can at least do that in the computer (i guess this is more of a question than request). Or maybe a way to do this with the samsung camera app and a mod, because its in the app that the slow down is made after shooting from what i understood.
What i would really like is a port of the z2 camera or to functions like it or even the m8 that lets you edit. the speeds after. Is a port of any of those possible at all?
Same here. I'm looking for that kind of app. Nothing found yet
I actually just found an app today that it kinda does this, but at the same time it doesnt.
Its called kinemaster and its a video editor that lets you edit the speed of the video and select/make cuts on the video and then slow does down. Problem is that it can only do that with videos of 30fps, even if you have a higher fps video it either wont read it or just give you a message that will scale it down to 30fps. The end result isn't bad but its not really the same thing.
Also, the app is free on the play store and they used to have a paid and free version but now switched to free version but with a subscription a month and what that will do is remove the water marker that the app puts on the corner of the video in the free version. So, it kinda does it but at the same time it doesnt.
It would be much better for the end result to just have a app that would either edit or record it with higher fps and then we can edit that file on the phone. Something like the iphone 5s, or even in the android world the m8 and z2 do(z2 even keeps the sound and slows it down also, but if we could get this even without sound would be great).
The one I found, that of course is not same as having the port from Z2 that it's much easier and faster, is AndroidStudio. Check it out. I always use this one to slow/fast parts of any video
Thanks for the suggestion! I tried it and its indeed easier to select which part is slowed down and it doesn't give that watermark on the videos.
Still not the same as on devices like z2 or m8 (not to mention iphone), but at least is something. I have been looking online, especially on xda which is more reliable, to see if there is a port of the feature of any of these, especially the m8 since some apps were already ported, but no luck.
We would probably need both the camera app and gallery of the m8. From the z2 i think just the camera would be enough since from what i have seen that edit is done there after recording.
I still don't get why Samsung, from all brands with so much features and gimmicks, would just give a video editor or something to edit 120fps to slow down some parts.
Yes, totally. I hope they realize this and they make it. If you have any news about the M8 let me know.
We need to get a huge thread going to get attention
There is a thread in the Note 4 app section where a dev was able to vastly improve the quality of the stock Note 4 app. The software is already there in this time-shift app, all we need is a dev or a few to get into it and get it working. I'm not sure where we would get the most attention but if enough of us get together and request this feature somebody has to take notice. I'm willing to start a bounty and add 100 bucks to it. Here is my thread below, if you guys want to add your support that would be great or if anyone else has an idea of a better way to get some attention I'm all ears.

Nexus 6 Ultimate 4K Video Test

Change to 4K/2160p in Quality Settings! The only real compression is on youtube's side. And I will say I see a little better quality on my Master File than on youtube.
I decided to test the 4k video recording on the Nexus 6 by shooting my entire vacation with it. I've compiled a recap video showcasing the camera's abilities.
-There conditions recorded in are: high light, low light, sunny, overcast, indoors and outdoors, etc.
-I've zoomed in a few times and moved the phone to force refocus in a few clips.
-There has been NO post editing to the footage such as color correction, cropping, stabilizing, etc.
-Crossfading, fade to black, muting of audio, and title overlays are the only alterations made to compile this video
ENJOY!
Looks like OIS keeps making things a bit juttery and focusing in and out at times.

No... But 3rd party cameras are not a complete solution. They use the existing libs and camera HAL etc, which is software.
But you can try it, who knows?

Try with Cinema FV-5
I watched the whole thing before realizing my monitor at work isn't 4K
nice video - I'll have to watch it later at home to really see the quality. The focusing issue sucks and is really pronounced on this phone, I wonder if L Camera is any better at it.

I hope they add 60/120 fps soon. That's the only camera feature I really want
Open camera supports everything people!!!! Just downloaded it and is now my default camera!!!! It support all resolutions for stills and recording, shows amount of memory left in real time, and a lot of other things and you get really check the options for a lot and best part of all its open source!!! So always free and never ad filled, I think Google should have hired this guy to make their camera app!

Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I started watching the video on my phone, then decided to stream it to my 42 inch flat screen tv to check out the quality on a larger scale, and then realized my 42 inch TV is lower resolution than my phone as a result. lol!
i was recently looking around for other camera apps so as to see how the device's ability to shoot in RAW compares to various cameras. I was considering trying FV5 but was checking out the free alternatives first.
I tried L Camera, which did let me adjust ISO, white balance, and so on, but it had some pretty major issues that need to be worked out still.
While I haven't tried FV5 yet (so I can't say much about that app specifically) I just tried out Open Camera (the above post caused me to remember it showing up in the app store several times while I was browsing) and wowee it's actually really good so far. Only one bug so far that I've encountered and it's very minor. The customization and various settings are really well thought out.
It says it can do 60/120 fps with a disclaimer that it may not always reach the designated fps if the hardware doesn't support it..so maybe?
auto-focus seemed quite a bit faster compared to google's stock camera app and it's much easier to adjust the lighting quickly than any other camera apps I've tried so far.
Right now the only thing I can really find "wrong" with it is the overall design and layout of the app, but it's not poorly designed at all.
I'll be using Open Camera as my default camera app until a major flaw presents itself or google amps up it's own app to compete. Very pleasantly surprised so far.

Will google ever fix the camera app? :/

Why is it so hard for google to fix the camera app and the camera quality issues that plague android? I was expecting them to fix it with the 5.1 update , but no luck, if you ask apple fans why they think the iphone is superior , the only thing they have going for them is camera quality. All I'm asking is that they reduce the time it takes to take a HDR+ picture , because without HDR+ the nexus 6 camera is kinda meh, implement an auto HDR+ mode, let us actually use burst mode, timelapse, that's pretty much it.... I don't want to install 3 different camera apps to get features that should be stock ...

Totally agree, nexus 6 is finally a google phone with a good sensor and lens, and they ruin it with a camera app stuck in 2012.
Things missing:
- 60 fps video
- auto HDR
- HDR Video
- burst mode
- slow motion
- manual settings for ISO and shutter speed
- touch focus & manual focus during videos
- stutter free zoom
- stereo sound recording
I hear you I'm not very pleased with the situation either. I did download a program just for burst mode (Perfectly Clear) something that was standard on my galaxy S3 2 + years ago. The focus hunting in video mode is infuriating also.
I also agree about the iPhone. I was looking through my friend's new iPhone 6 and was playing with apps and camera like lame, lame, lame, wow this camera app is nice and slow mo!
Sent from my Nexus 6
I want a quick picture may use the camera app.
I do not have the time or care enough about taking pictures to learn what half the terms mean.
Take a picture, capture a moment .... looks good enough to me.
Really if they had Auto HDR .... whatever that is I can not see me using it.
Just go with the defaults.
If anything I never go for the highest resolution do not want to fill my internal memory or cloud storage with pictures.
Now I read many threads where people that want to take professional looking pictures just buy a third party app, think Camera 2 was recommended.
The iPhone Camera app maybe better but with Android you are free to try other apps.
The problem is the 3rd party apps suck at doing it (HDR, Burst, etc) and some excel at one thing so you end up having 4 camera apps that don't do what the iPhone camera does pretty well in one app. It is not like you can't run other camera apps on your iPhone either!
Don't be an Android fanboi/apologist please. Good grief!
I don't think its being an android fanboy or apologist to say a person has a differing opinion than yours. I use HDR on my N6 ALL THE TIME.
Quality is fine for me. I'm not looking to become some great camera phone photographer. I just want to capture a quick moment. I've used quite a few camera apps and, in the end, I find it doesn't matter to me. It all looks good to me.
Point, shoot, upload... MAYBE stream through Chromecast for family. You prefer a better camera set of functions, others, including myself, think the camera is just fine because it fits what we do with our cameras.
It not like anyone is slinging mud at you and telling you to go get an iPhone.. Don't be that guy that throws mud because someone has a differing opinion than you.
So just to be clear... your opinion is the camera app is "good enough" and we all should be fine with that? Oh well then O.K. No reason to improve it then. What's next?
Edit: YOU HAVE A NOTE 4??? Get the f*** out of here you are not using Google camera!!! If I had a Note 4 I would not be complaining either! It arguably takes better pictures than the iPhone :good:

u do realize u can download the google camera from the play store right? Also its just a phone with a camera. you want quality pics buy a real camera. Gotta love the complainers over something very small. There is nothing wrong with the camera. Get real. Jeez
Auto HDR would also help people who don't want to spend time learning to take pictures.
I think we need an easy to use and fast camera app, which also adds options for those who want to get the best out of the camera. The new Lumia Camera 5 is doing this pretty good i think.
Title of thread: Will google ever fix the camera app
People agree it sucks. It runs from acceptable to horrendous. We are labeled complainers? Why is it so much to ask that Google has a "good" camera by default then if I want manual controls or other features I use another app?
Yes, if I want to take a lot of good pictures I will break out my DSLR but functionally my Galaxy S3 was better than what came in my Nexus 6.

Its very simple to them having a acceptable os running would be far more important than any apks. You cant sit there and tell me u rather have a good camera over the os. If so thats a stupid thought. A camera app can be fixed very easily by downloading another from the playstore. So again this small issue that people are having with the google camera is what it is A SMALL ISSUE.
Not quite sure i agree with all the people saying " you can just download another app " ?? you can't

Far from a fan boy. Just getting ridiculous with people complaining about a non issue. How is the camera lacking features when it was provided just recently? the google camera is new back in april 2014. So no sure what u mean by poor and lacking features. If thats the case then the google now launcher and is poor and lacking features. Do some research fanboy

Lol you're making yourself look ridiculous.
So apparently because it was given to us in April 2014 means its perfect? LOL
HTC, Samsung , Sony, OnePlus ( Oneplus btw has the same damn sensor so its 100% capable ) ... All of their Android devices offer :
60-fps
Slow motion
HDR in video
better autofocus while recording video
The list is actually pretty long from whats lacking on the Nexus camera app, sorry but if you can't see that , you're straight up blind, either physically or mentally

your the one complaining about a non issue. google makes apps/os as simple as possible. Again research before u continue to complain about a non issue. Your a joke dude thinking that google left out features. there is a reason why. Simplicity.
Have a great day
Ps. Never said its perfect, but its not bad as most people state it is. I rather have simplicity over a camera with features I wont use.

LOL , cheers, needed that laugh

Which camera app?

Just got the phone today and I'm really enjoying it. Camera seems to take pretty decent photos, I'm just not liking the UI of the stock app itself. What are you guys using?

Stock.
If you use another camera, it won't work with the Moto wrist flick action.

Yea, I figured as much. I can almost live without that though. Coming from a Note 4 and i'm used to touch to focus.

The Moto camera app has touch to focus. You just have to turn off the auto focus..
I'm trying to live with the Moto camera app....I also like it for the barcode scanner...... But, I found the HTC One camera app here on XDA. I've used that app for the last 3 years and have always wished it was available for other phones. It's in the Android apps and games section (here's the link to the thread): http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/themes-apps/mod-htc-one-m9-camera-gallery-t3143538 I like the gallery too.
I've also tried MANY other cameras and the one I like the best so far, and it's new, is: ProShot
I also like Camera FV-5..... I just purchased it today. The 3.0 update that's coming out looks pretty good, that's why I got it now. I don't like the 21mp ratio aspect and if you change it, it takes off 5mp, but we'll see what happens?
Also like: A Better Camera - pretty good, but don't like the UI
AZ Camera - Manual Pro Cam - Just tried it this week, seems ok for a freebie
Open Camera - This one really impressed me for a free camera
Snap Camera - Looks like an upgrade to Open Camera, but I have some "touch" issues with it from time to time
Cameringo+ Effects camera - It has great reviews and 4.6 stars, but I just didn't like the UI either.
CameraMX - Pretty good for a freebie too
Google Camera - It's Google Camera Not much more to say
I plan on messing around with Camera FV-5 tonight to get a better feel for it......But I'll probably always use the Moto camera for the ease of access to it.
Thanks for the suggestions. Do any one of the cemera apps you mentioned allow users to manually set e.g. ISO? (I don't own a MXPE yet so I can't test this myself)

Yeah, most of those do.
The Camera FV-5 and Cameringo+ are capable of being almost fully manual. The ProShot has several of those too and the HTC camera even has several manual settings. Not sure about the others, I didn't explore them that much? Pretty sure they'll say in the description? If you get it narrowed down or need more specific info, I can *try* to help by downloading (one I own) and trying something with it? I'm a little restricted on time later this week, headed to St Louis for a business meeting (and Cardinal's game).
Are any of these apps able to shoot 720p in 120 fps? In the other cameras I have tried, I get a pop-up saying fps over thirty isn't supported even on 720p

Thanks! When you get a chance, could you use one of these apps to take a couple of photos in low light setting, and see if manually setting the ISO and/or (probably and?!) extending the exposure time would improve the camera's low light performance (without flash)? You probably need a (very?) steady hand
THANKS!

Well, I had a few minuted today, so here's the setup..... I play in a band (just a weekend thing), so I went into my music room (aka, my bedroom) and turned off the light, but left the door half-way open and the hall light on... I then took some pics of my gear.
I snapped several pictures using 4 different apps.... There was almost no difference with any of the apps vs the Moto camera as far as quality goes. One disappointing thing, when I tried to change the ISO, 3 of the 4 apps crashed and the 4th didn't allow me to click on the different speeds?? It's almost like the ISO is locked to auto? They all offered a "night mode" which made it brighter, but added quite a bit of noise. There was also an exposure compensation that brightened up the image, but basically did the same thing as night mode and added noise.
I didn't post any of the images, since there was no difference and it wasn't the best of settings. I'll try to get some better testing this evening and see if I get anything worth posting?
The stock camera sucks, because it doesn't have different pic sizes. Only 16m for 4:3 or 21m on 16:9. Witch results in huge file sizes. I take a lot of pics for work and 2m is big enough. The lack of options is weird.
I have tried a bunch of camera apps with this phone.
Stock camera .....very poor quality compared to other apps.
These are the best (not in order):
Snap camera ...takes great pictures, probably the best of the three with the right settings ..... but currently buggy though with this phone ...auto-focus is not that sharp in low light, touch to capture works great and takes sharp focused pictures but is buggy (you often have to double tap to capture, but if you can live with that until it's fixed..) and also the video mode doesn't currently work
Camera FV-5 ....very good quality pics, sharp, detailed, on par with snap, no bugs found
Open Camera ....Very good quality pics, auto focus works best of all the apps, or on par with Camera FV-5 ...no bugs found ....video mode works ....and it's free
Does this app like snap camera or open camera drain more battery than stock caméra ?
Took this one last night at the St Louis Cardinals game.. The post game fireworks.. Not too bad for stock, set on automatic.

Stock is ok but wow does the files really have to be so large. Kinda stupid. You don't have enough control to change picture size before taking a pic. Most of the time I am just emailing and texting pics you don't need a 7MB pic for that.
