[Q] Nexus 4 with Android 5.0.2 and MetroPCS - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I bought a used Nexus 4 off eBay with Android 5.0.2 (edit: 5.0.1) on it. I'm trying to use it with MetroPCS. I can send/receive calls and texts on it, but I have no data connection. Wi-Fi is working.
I've tried taking the sim card out/in and I've also tried every APN setting for MetroPCS I can find, with no luck. Any other ideas?

This may not be the issue but worth a check: Check under "settings", "data usage", that setting "cellular data" is set on. It somehow turned off on mine once and resulted in the same symptoms.

I forgot to mention I checked I that too. I think I've checked most of the likely culprits by now.

Are you sure it's on 5.0.2? There is no official 5.0.2 factory image for the n4 so you must be on a custom rom. I'd flash back to the 5.0.1 factory image and see if it works then

Oops, yes, I checked, it's on 5.0.1. Don't know where I got the idea it's on 5.0.2.

What are your APN settings?

Make sure your APN protocol only has the value "ipv6". Perhaps you see this mentioned in a recent post...

Wifi won't stay on Please Help

This is my first post ever on xda and I am in desperate need of help. I have a droid razr M that recently recieved an OTA update to 4.1.2. My wifi would not toggle on after the update. I thought I might have gotten a virus or something so just to be sure I unlocked my boot loader, flashed 4.1.1 stock back onto my phone, wifi worked just fine. OTA update again to 4.1.2 and it immediately quit working. My sister and brother have the same exact phone and this did not happen for them. Please help, my phone has basically become useless to me since I cannot connect to wifi. Thank you to whoever can help me with this problem.
How much do you care about losing user data? You could wipe user data and see if that would fix it...

Your WiFi settings could have reset after the update. Check the settings to ensure that you have unchecked ignore weak signals.

Also make sure you have Wifi switched to "Always" in advanced settings. Keeps Wifi from turning off when your screen turns off.

Restricted access change - voice disabled (Verizon)

So I've been getting this message occasionally the last few days, and voice/calling does indeed get disabled. A simple restart gets me back up and running for a day or so.
I am rooted but I specifically only noticed this since replacing my mobile hotspot provisioning app with the modified version from the dev forum.
Anyone else ever get this? It's a system notification in my task bar. I'll grab a screenshot next time. Think it's something to worry about?

[Q] How to turn off auto download for OTA updates?

So I recommended my friend to get Nexus 4 a while back and he loves it. One thing that bugs him is the OTA update downloading over mobile data. The thing is, he doesn't have a great data plan and is only connected to wifi for 8 hours a day (sometimes less).
He has gone through 3 updates so far (4.3, 4.4, and 4.4.2) and all of the updates were automatically downloaded over mobile data, which incur significant cost on his monthly bill. Is there any way to turn it off or at least set it to manual or via wifi only?
His phone is not rooted, so autostart, autorun, and FOTAkill is not an option.
I think you can't stop it from auto downloading but you CAN limit your data usage ?

That would be interesting to know. I never use fully stock Roms so the ota I'd pointless for me anyway..

Your friend could turn off mobile data altogether. That is one way of holding the OTAs

He needs mobile data for instant messaging (Whatsapp, Wechat). So I guess there's really no OFF switch for OTA auto download.
I never noticed it until my friend asked me (I can't get OTAs anyway, so I didn't bother looking at the update page in settings). I used to assume that I can turn it off set it to "download over wifi only", because I remembered having those options in my HTC Sensation.
Weird.

Yeah. Seems that way. To be honest, I too never thought of limiting OTAs. Custom rom users

Note 3 data keeps dropping

Hi guys I need your help, I have had this note 3 for 1 month I notice that my data keeps dropping in and out but yet I have 3 to 4 bars of signal, I have pulled Sim card out and also did a soft reset but still the same problem I am wondering if this is a common problem or should I just take back the note and get a refurb note.

Hey, are you rooted or pure stock. If you're rooted I'd try flashing a different modem in Odin here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47400062
If you're pure stock and not rooted at all, I'd probably give big red a call or stop in at your nearest store for a replacement.

Thank you for this. I am running stock rooted NC2. Going to try the NC4 file to see if it helps. Both data and voice have not been great on my phone lately. Even text messages have failed sometimes.
Are these instructions correct?
-download modem file, extract
-start Odin.
-Select "phone" and fetch the modem.bin file.
-Only thing checked should be "Auto Reboot"
-Put phone in download mode
-Plug in USB
-hit Start
-reboot

I'm on vacation right now so I can't completely confirm but the modem file should show up in the ap slot. It varies from phone and area but nc4 works great for me. Some people are using the mje modem on kk. It's a trial and error for you. Hope it's just the modem and not your phone.

I experienced this issue when running on GSM networks, i fixed my data stability issue by adjusting my APN settings and changing a couple of uncommon things such as adjusting mvno type to IMSI, bearer type to LTE, and removing the port for data (not MMS!), and fixed my signal stability issue by upgrading or downgrading the modem depending on what rom i was running.
If I am under verizon because they do not use GSM how do I Change apn setting and also whatever else do I have to change on a non rooted phone.

I'm not quite sure why you'd need to change APN settings if you're still on verizon (unless you're using a network that runs off of verizon towers). But the answer to your question is go to settings > mobile networks > Access Point Names. You'll need to leave MCC and MNC as they are. Those change based on what kind of network you are connected to. If you change those your APN settings will not save.
Hi Christaina do you think by changing those setting will help my phone from dropping data on and of while on foxfi and surfing the net
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The only reason I ask is I have unlimited data and I use this for all of of my needs and I cannot afford to have data dropping so much

That honestly sounds like a modem issue but could potentially be fixed by apn settings by actually setting the authentication type, APN type set to default, hirpri, internet, mms I don't know any of the verizon APN settings because im using this phone on straight talk through AT&T towers.
flash MJE modem
Thanks
