So I recommended my friend to get Nexus 4 a while back and he loves it. One thing that bugs him is the OTA update downloading over mobile data. The thing is, he doesn't have a great data plan and is only connected to wifi for 8 hours a day (sometimes less).
He has gone through 3 updates so far (4.3, 4.4, and 4.4.2) and all of the updates were automatically downloaded over mobile data, which incur significant cost on his monthly bill. Is there any way to turn it off or at least set it to manual or via wifi only?
His phone is not rooted, so autostart, autorun, and FOTAkill is not an option.
I think you can't stop it from auto downloading but you CAN limit your data usage ?

That would be interesting to know. I never use fully stock Roms so the ota I'd pointless for me anyway..

Your friend could turn off mobile data altogether. That is one way of holding the OTAs

He needs mobile data for instant messaging (Whatsapp, Wechat). So I guess there's really no OFF switch for OTA auto download.
I never noticed it until my friend asked me (I can't get OTAs anyway, so I didn't bother looking at the update page in settings). I used to assume that I can turn it off set it to "download over wifi only", because I remembered having those options in my HTC Sensation.
Weird.

Yeah. Seems that way. To be honest, I too never thought of limiting OTAs. Custom rom users

if there's a fw upgrade available, should i update or will it mess up my ability to root? what firmwares can be rooted? any rom recommendations? can i also have a link to a rooting guide? thanks.
also can i activate the phone without 3g or will I have to borrow my cousin's sim?
You need a data plan to use the Vibrant. If you haven't purchased it yet, I would recommend waiting until the gps fix is pushed out OTA. That way you can evaluate if it is truly fixed without committing to anything. Either way, I don't think the upcoming firmware update will prevent the current method of rooting.
If you don't already have one, get a gmail account and start cleaning up and organzing your contacts.
That way you'll be game-on as soon as you log in to your phone.
You don't need a data plan to use the Vibrant, as long as you paid off the phone and you have a T-Mobile SIM, you're good to go.

I've actually been using my g1 sans data plan for a while. my school (where i spend most of my time) has free wifi and i have wifi at home too (where i spend the rest of my time) my question is can you do the initial gmail setup on wifi? with the g1 it had to be done over 3g/edge. (unless it was rooted, but you needed to get passed the setup to root)

Not sure about setting up the initial gmail connection over wifi, but you can root it without logging in first. Its not locked out like the g1 was. You can get into everything right out of the box. To log in, you simply launch the android market and enter your gmail and password.

so how about my other questions?
any rom recommendations? what is the galaxy s equivalent of cyanogenrom (i know cm6 is coming out soon, but i need something now) or should i just leave it stock with root?
when doing the one click root, does it flash a custom recovery (like amonra's on the g1) or does that have to be done separately? what is the best/easiest to use/stablest recovery available as of now?
Wait for the G2 or HD7... they gave to get better battery life, right? ... I sure hope so.

If you're buying it in store, make sure to fire it up, maybe borrowing a rep's sim if necessary. Try out the GPS and if it doesn't lock, make them bring you a new one, and keep doing this until you get one that works. I wish I had done this.
i should clarify: I already bought the phone and it's in the mail.
I don't see an option anywhere to limit 3G usage - such as preventing the Xoom from using the connection when the screen is off, etc. Does anyone see a way to do this?
Also, trying to register for an account on verizonwireless.com (to check data usage) results in the system sending a text message with a temporary password...that's helpful! lol
There is an app for that! Verizon has an offical app that shows data usage.

Haha, there is indeed...however when I launch it (My Verizon for Tablets,) even when on 3G, it seems to think I'm connected via Wifi and wants my user ID/password for MyVerizonWireless! (Which I don't have, due to the inability to receive a text message when registering.) Perhaps it needs an update?

Yeah, same here - they're sending a letter, best they could do.
are they at least sending it first class or priority? thats the at least they can do imo
settings, wireless networks, mobile networks, and uncheck data enabled.
Yeah, I was hoping to not have to turn it on and off manually, but that will work for now. I haven't tried any of the existing programs in the market that automate it yet...
Did you try restarting your xoom? I experienced the same thing today. I was on 3g, switched to wifi, and while on wifi, I the tried to check my data usage using the Verizon app. It wanted a username and password. Realizing that i was on wifi, i switched back to 3g and tried again. When I signed in with Verizon credentials, it showed me account information for my phone instead. I restated my xoom and launched the verizon app while in 3g and everything worked fine.
Oh...that 1gb data plan is JOKE! Halfway through it and haven't even spent 24 hours on the Xoom.

I was able to log in, as I had my Xoom added as a new line on the same account on which I already have a Droid. While I can see my Xoom data usage within the app, the widget will only show me my phone data usage. Has anyone found a way around this?
Yeah I've found a way. Call verizon and ask for a refund on your 1 month fee plus the activation fee since they already came out and
Said you can get a refund. They don't require you to buy the data to buy the xoom anymore.

Hi
I updated my phone to the latest update on Saturday and ever since I can't turn mobile internet off. I can actually turn it off, but it ignores me.
So, for example if my mobile internet connection setting is set to off and if I open a message that has an attachment to download, and I press download by accident, the download sets in motion the actual download and restarts the mobile internet connection - ie it overrides the setting I have set.
I can see enormous problems with this if you're abroad when this happens. Or when Google maps has an update and it tries to update automatically (I haven't figured out a way to stop it doing this - can anyone help with this??) and I'm used to quickly going to settings and truning mobile internet off so it stops it from downloading without a wifi connection. This I now won't be able to do. Real nightmare in terms of data costs if we can't control mobile internet.
Anyone got any way around this - or indeed - has anyone acually spotted that this is happening other than me?? Try it and see..
I have an unbranded phone on O2 and this issue so far only seems to be with attachements on texts (ie pictures) and google but not updating/refreshing weather etc or uploading emails.....
I can't reproduce the problem here. I turned off mobile data and wifi in the Quick Settings menu, and sure enough, I can't download attachments in gmail, and there's no indication that it's connecting to mobile data when I try.
It will download attachments in mms even if you have mobile data turned off. You shouldn't be paying for these anyway if you're receiving them.

Hi - thanks for this. You're right, of course. I think the thing that's different now is that the icon comes up where it possibly didn't before the update and that's why I've picked up on it. I certainly can't remember the "G" coming up anytime before when it's downloaded picture messages. Maybe cos the carriers charge separately to send these nowadays I'm not getting so many and therefore just haven't noticed.
Thanks guys anyway.
Other than my initial panic about the above, this particular update seems so far to be ok. My sd card fried after the Xmas update and I had many other bugs, so I'm waiting with baited breath about this one and hoping for the best.
I purchased a new, unlocked, Nexus 4 several days ago. I had a new SIM card installed by T-Mobile the same day. Since I have a plan with a 2 GB mobile data download, I want to keep an eye on my mobile data use. I set up the entire phone using only WiFi, and the data download info under WiFi shows it. The Mobile data also continues to grow.....not by much...only 5.24 MB over three days. Other than several phone calls I am not aware of any data downloads via the mobile phone. Can anyone help by telling me what gives? Thanks.

Not sure what caused that but even if you go over your 2GBs of data you won't be charged, you will just be reduced to edge speeds.

My thanks to everyone who helped me.
I found this answer to fit my situation best. Per your advice I found what apps are using the mobile data, and each one to what extent. I also found that I can turn my mobile data off. I had no idea that certain apps periodically use the mobile data in the background. Obviously this is my first smartphone. Thankfully, I have several Nexus 7's to have a least a little experience with this device.

Hi all,
After a long research and playing with different options, I finally found a way to make Foxfi work again on my Verizon Unlimitted data, none rooted, OG5 with latest update. I'm not gurantte that it will work for everyone because I only tested on my phone. So feel free to try out my method and if you blow up your device, it's your fault and your responsiblity. Once you able to bypass VZ lock down, you should able to connect normally WITHOUT have to go through all the steps. Enough said let try it out
1) Turn off your 4G, turn on your wifi.
2) Open foxfi and follow through until it failed by VZ message.."please call bahbahbah", hit cancel when you see the message
3)Switch to wifi and disconnect it from connecting to your router (open the connection then hit forget). Now your wifi is on but you shouldn't have internet
4)Close your Foxfi then reopen, then go through the process again, but at the end you will received a message that it unable to connect, hit cancel.
5) Now turn off your wifi and turn on your 4G, try to connect with foxfi and it should prompt you to enable hot spot in settings, launch settings and turn on hotspot. Bang, you should be sucess!!!
Once this is done, next time you just launch your foxfi the normal way, no need to go through these steps again.
Please provide feed back and good luck.
Well I heard that Foxfi is working again, don't know how/why?? but it's working, so no need to try anything. Thread closed.
How reliable is the paid version of FoxFi? I used it in the past on my S4 before I rooted it and it worked fine, but it was only the free version. Aside from the 500 meg-per-use limit, I had no problem. I tried it briefly a little earlier and it didn't work, but I might have missed a step. Almost forgot to mention, but after installing and running the app for the first time, a message appeared saying 'Network may be monitored'. Should I be worried about this? Thanks.

Thanks. One other question, is there a way to FoxFi without having to be stuck with the system lock screen? I like to use Zui as my lock screen, and having to use the system one I have to sign into my phone twice. Is there a setting in Security I can disable or something?
Download this app, run it and it should remove foxfi lock screen. http://pdanet.co/help/RemoveLock.apk
After that you can set your own lock screen

If you try to use the built-in mobile hotspot, it'll respond by telling you to either call Verizon or visit their site to enable that feature. With FoxFi, it allows you to use the mobile hotspot without having to pay extra for the convenience of it. You open the app, start it, then tap the button that redirects you to the mobile hotspot feature built into the phone. Basically, the app bypasses the need to enable the hotspot through your carrier. The full version is only $7.95 and you have about seven days, I think, to try it out. I'd recommend installing the 'Remove Lock' app mentioned in this thread should you choose to try FoxFi, since the app requires you to set either a password or pin lock due to it creating a VPN when first used. I've been using it for a while and it works as well as any rooted Android phone with the hotspot feature enabled. Hope this helps.

Simple answer, the build in hot-spot you have to pay for Verizon data service plan. With Foxfi you pay 7$ one time fee and use it forever...

No, not at all. Nothing on my bill indicate useage...
Per VZW...
Here's the breakdown:
If you have a new Verizon "Share Everything" plan, you can use your phone's built-in mobile hotspot feature or a third-party tethering app free of charge? but you're limited to the data in your Share Everything data pool. Overage rates for shared data plans are $15 per gigabyte.
If you have an old usage-based data plan, you can now use a third-party tethering app free of charge. You can also use your phone's mobile hotspot feature for an additional $20 per month (per device), which also gets you an additional 2GB of data.
If you have an old unlimited plan, you are technically required to pay $20 per month for tethering? whether you're using a third-party app or your phone's mobile hotspot feature. However, Verizon has no way of knowing if you're using a third-party app to tether.

For the most part, it works without issues.
What I have discovered. Devices cant talk across it (as far as I can tell), and sometime it bugs out (every once in awhile). Overall works great.
The annoying part is damn icons in the top of your phone you cant get rid of. 2 for foxfi, 1 for hotspot.
