Update 2.50.405.2 - downloads overide mobile interent off setting!! - Desire HD General

Hi
I updated my phone to the latest update on Saturday and ever since I can't turn mobile internet off. I can actually turn it off, but it ignores me.
So, for example if my mobile internet connection setting is set to off and if I open a message that has an attachment to download, and I press download by accident, the download sets in motion the actual download and restarts the mobile internet connection - ie it overrides the setting I have set.
I can see enormous problems with this if you're abroad when this happens. Or when Google maps has an update and it tries to update automatically (I haven't figured out a way to stop it doing this - can anyone help with this??) and I'm used to quickly going to settings and truning mobile internet off so it stops it from downloading without a wifi connection. This I now won't be able to do. Real nightmare in terms of data costs if we can't control mobile internet.
Anyone got any way around this - or indeed - has anyone acually spotted that this is happening other than me?? Try it and see..
I have an unbranded phone on O2 and this issue so far only seems to be with attachements on texts (ie pictures) and google but not updating/refreshing weather etc or uploading emails.....

I can't reproduce the problem here. I turned off mobile data and wifi in the Quick Settings menu, and sure enough, I can't download attachments in gmail, and there's no indication that it's connecting to mobile data when I try.

It will download attachments in mms even if you have mobile data turned off. You shouldn't be paying for these anyway if you're receiving them.

Hi - thanks for this. You're right, of course. I think the thing that's different now is that the icon comes up where it possibly didn't before the update and that's why I've picked up on it. I certainly can't remember the "G" coming up anytime before when it's downloaded picture messages. Maybe cos the carriers charge separately to send these nowadays I'm not getting so many and therefore just haven't noticed.
Thanks guys anyway.
Other than my initial panic about the above, this particular update seems so far to be ok. My sd card fried after the Xmas update and I had many other bugs, so I'm waiting with baited breath about this one and hoping for the best.

App to find out what's causing data connection to start?

Does anyone know of an app that would help me find out what application/process is causing my 3G connection to turn on randomly...... a lot?
I've gone through all the options i can, to stop any program that runs updates (Twitter, Facebook, Stocks, ActiveSync, Internet time etc) but the connection STILL randomly connects >.<
Any help appreciated!

Thank you for asking that.
Finally someone else who find that's completely "censored".
I give you official answers from my phone provider:
It's normal. To avoid receiving a big bill, you should buy a pack data download, so if it randomly connects, you are safe. Other users reporting the same and its normal and the data pack is perfect solution- No comments
I give you answer from HTC support:
Go into settings/submenu/megasubmenu... whatever, and check "phone usage" n(which only tells the calls usage by the way, not the data)- no comments
I give you answer from forums users:
Yes either try this wonderful application: x,y,z to know the usage : (its paying ones).
Or completely mess the configuration to connect to internet via your HTC HD2 "quietly brilliant" device (very quietly)...
Ok you understand, you're more or less screwed and have to accept that complete scam.
And apparently we are 2 in the world now, to find that's an essential feature, missing (another one).
Ho and to actually diagnose which one is using gprs... Hm we can't even control to say "NO never activate DATA", because the button automatically turns on (quietly stupid).
This cab allows you to disable all data connections...enjoy
My phone was starting data connections all the time when I first flashed a cooked ROM and had it set up with the SFR Always On data connection... On my stock SFR ROM it was called Full Internet but it used exactly the same settings but I didn't have the problem so I just tried changing the name from Always One back to Full Internet and it worked strangely enough... I don't know if that can help but it might be worth a shot .

Really need some help on data from people in the know

Hi guys
wondering if someone can help me with an issue im having regarding mobile data useage. I am in the UK and I live in an area where 3g is non existant so I have switched to GSM only in the settings. My problem is my phone is constantly using data and I dont know why or how to stop it.
I downloaded an app to show mobile useage, calls, text, data etc
My provider charges me £4 per 1 Mb (this is 1024kb yeah?)
Well I then went into the settings and edited the providers auto settings to stop it from connecting, and left my wi fi on. When I went to bed, my data was showing 0.24Mb, when I woke up this morning it was showing 1.23Mb (with a cost of over £4)
What is causing this? Far as I can tell I have manually stopped the phone from connecting but something is using data. I have the Gmail sync option enabled (but wi fi was on) but still, it went up 1 Mb whilst I slept.
Can someone help me out with this issue please as its starting to confuse me
As far as I know, push email doesn't work over wifi. So if you have google syncing enabled, it keeps a small mobile connection open at all times over which email notifications are sent.
I'm not an IT guy, so I might be wrong But just try to disable syncing and see what happens!
I opened the thread "strange bug" related to this. In my case it uses more 3g band only if it's attached to the pc via usb. When I must attach the X10 to the pc I disable the apn with apndroid.

gmail does work on wifi as far as I can tell. However, I have now gone further into the internet settings and wiped all of the data and the phone now cannot connect. Now this will save me a bundle of cash, but also means that I cant get my internet connection when away from wifi. The APN apps looked good but a lot say dont work with CDMA networks, which I can only assume im on as the apps do nothing
I use WiFi too. But when X10 is attached to the pc it continues to use 3g band even if in the notification bar the WiFi icon appears.

well I didnt know that.
I can confirm that Gmail sync DOES work over wi-fi as I have completely deleted the phones internet settings now and am still getting my email.
So this means I will no longer be getting charged for data useage, but cant get internet other than wi fi
cybrid3, you didnt need to wipe the apn/internet settings, there is a simple tick box in /wireless controls /mobile networks/ MMS and data <<, unticking this will stop the phone from using any mobile data (sms/texting still works).
Turning off 3g doesnt make any difference as the phone still uses data over gprs or gsm.
These phones are real data hogs and its best to get a cheap plan if you can.
yeah, but if I disabled it all, then I would not longer have MMS and that is something I do use
Ask your provider to:
1. block data
or
2. give you APN settings for MMS only.
Theres also the possibility that wifi is set to disable itself after the phone goes to sleep.
I left my wifi settings on and let the phone sleep. Based on testing through the wifi active time on spare parts, the phone accessed data through the carrier.

ask your provider for wap access not data
its very cheap
this way u can send and get mms
Why don't you get a plan that includes unlimited data? Only cost me £5 a month extra for that on uk vodafone.. Well worth it.

I have unlimited data, but they say I have gone over my fair use policy so something has been in the background. It used 1 MB whilst I slept. The plans with fair use of 1GB seem pretty useless now

Official 2.2 issues

I didn't see a post for this aside from sifting through other 2.2 related threads, but if this has been posted feel free to ignore this.
So far the problems I have are the server redirect error in the browser and cannot use voice dialing through Bluetooth. I press the call button on my bluetooth headset and the voice app opens and shows listening then shows an error and then shows listening again and keeps doing this over and over and won't let me speak commands. I've been using firefox mobile to bypass the redirect error and I have no fix for the Bluetooth problem. Is anyone else having this bluetooth issue?
same issues
i have had exactly same issues wth froyo...
thanks for letting me know .. how to fix the browser issue... but i am still pretty pissed on bluetooth issue.... and even the dell stage home screen is very slow and irresponsive. I am using launcher pro for my home screen.
I've made Dell aware of the browser issue
they've just posted this on their DellHomeUK webpage
Latest on Dell Streak 2.2 update: We are working on some adjustments based on customer feedback and will continue the rollout shortly.
every now and then, i lose data connection on my streak after the 2.2 update. It happens when i dont use the phone for sometime. After that no matter how much i try turning data on n off it just doesnt work. I have to power off then on to make it work again. This doesnt happen with wifi. It driving me mad!
Hey fards if you can please make dell aware of this issue also because my friend also has this problem so i think its some software issue.

I also have a small issue with google voice. When I try to set it up I keep getting errors setting voicemail to google voice, but it still ends up working. It also happened when I went to O2 2.1.

Check settings->wireless & networks->mobile networks->schedule data connection.
Then check to see if you have any cellular data timeout options chosen. I do have them chosen, so that I can preserve battery life and it works amazingly

I agree about keeping it together, but the topic heading is kind of missleading. Its called 2.2 tweaks. Maybe rename the heading so those who search for problems don't overlook the topic.

Mobile data used even when disabled in settings

Hi,
I have a Nexus 4 with latest KitKat and franco's kernel. I didn't update via OTA. I keep my mobile data disabled, but it seems that my phone randomly use mobile data. Data graph does not register it, but I can here the noise in my computer speakers, and my stupid mobile provider always sends me SMS when I start using mobile internet, so I know it's using it. So, any idea why this happens and how to stop it? Thanks.

Is it happening when your phone is slipping back into 2G - even if not being used the phone send paging signals to the network every so often - you'll hear it especially before a call or SMS comes in as the network sets up the call. Whilst technically it is transmitting small amounts of paging data it isn't charged to you.

Well, I keep it on 2g only, so that's not what is happening, and I mentioned that I get sms from provider when my mobile data is used. I just upgraded to 4.4.1, so I'll see if it still happens.
In meantime, if anyone has any idea why this might happen, please post.

Google Photos "Waiting for Wi-Fi"

So 100GB free for two years on Google, great, thanks!! They did similar with Dropbox back when I got my Jewel. Ideal purpose here is photos of my kids getting backed up, I don't create nearly that many spreadsheets to warrant that kind of storage.
Photos WILL NOT back up photos via wi-fi, the Assistant in the app just says "Waiting for Wi-Fi", well the wait is over, you've been connected to wi-fi almost constantly for a week now. As soon as you flip the switch to use mobile data, they back up fine, over mobile data. I'm unlimited, so that's not a huge issue, just seems like a power drain to me.
I've done all the toggling on and off, uninstalled app (updates to system app only, not rooted yet so still on stock), cleared data/cache, blah blah blah. Seems like the app isn't allowed to see the Wi-Fi state or something. I've Googled the issue and I don't seem to be the only one facing it. Only thing I haven't tried is removing my Google account and re-adding it, but someone else on another forum states to have tried it to no avail.
Has anyone here on this forum of geniuses seen this and figured it out?????
thanks!!!
I have had the exact same issue. I had to set it to allow it to use wireless network and then turn that back off. It's a crap work around I know, but at least they get backed up.

that's kind of where i'm at. mobile data is the only option. just don't know if it's an app thing or something with sense. haven't tried a factory reset yet, but i give myself probably another three or four days before i finally break down and unlock so i guess i'll find out then if that fixes it.
Mine still went over wifi. I just had to switch it to allow over wireless.

how could you tell?
Could be wrong but think he is saying he set to wireless network then back to Wi-Fi and then sync. I had same problem so just left mine on both Wi-Fi and wireless network. Would rather just Wi-Fi but don't want to lose photos

I thought that might be a possibility, but none of the above have worked for me. Mobile data only
I have the same problem. There were a few times early on that I got it to work on Wi-Fi by toggling and clearing stuff in various combinations, but never consistently, so I just ended up saying screw it and using mobile data.
I remember that I had the same issue on a stock Android ROM on my M8 at one point though, so I don't think it's a sense issue.
Sent from my HTC 10
Same issue here. I ended up just letting it go over mobile data (especially since I have unlimited data with Sprint)
Was on vacation so I couldn't reply.
I have zero cell coverage at home so data cannot cross the cell network. I had issues with it not uploading over wifi. I set it to use cellular data and photos started backing up. Obviously it's only over WiFi because I don't have cell coverage at home. Turn off the cellular data backup setting and it stops uploading on WiFi again.
same trouble with a HTC 10 Port on my HTC m9
I had the exact same issue, and found the fix on reddit.
"Go to Settings, go to Data Usage, then open the menu and go to Network Restrictions. Tap the WiFi you're connected to so it is a metered network, and turn it back off. Should correct everything."
For whatever reason, toggling that setting makes Photos start backing up over WiFi again.

This issue goes beyond just Google Photos. I have noticed that it is global so anything that is set to download over WiFi only won't ever download. This includes automatic updates in the Play Store and Spotify downloads. There has to be a fix coming for this soon from HTC. I wonder if they are even aware of this bug...
just want to let you know guys this is no HTC related, I have Xiaomi Mi4c with CM13.1 facing exactly same problem in Flickr and Google Photos app, only solution is mentioned in this thread enable and disable your wifi network as metered.
EDIT: I am using AFWall+ and both Flickr and Google Photos had same issue and were restricted by firewall only to access Wifi, I am curious if it's gonna help if I will allow them to use mobile data and restrict only within the app.
I can confirm that here, definitely something up with the app. Did the meter toggle fix, disabled mobile data, snapped a photo, watched it back up over wifi. Then for fun I went into backup settings and turned off backup over cellular data and snapped another photo, waiting for wifi.
Hay guys i was having the same issue of not being able to upload my photos on google photos app, but i don't know when it started up and what caused it to do so, but i have digged up a solution from googlephotos help page, a guy named Gaieus solved this problem and shared his steps there. I have just copy pasted them here ,
I had the same issue. I finally found what to do and it seems to work for me now (hopefully for others, too):
Go to your settings > data usage
Tap on the three dot-menu icon at the top right
Select mobile hotspots
Uncheck your own (or any constant, reliable connection you often use) so that it is not marked with green as a mobile hotspot
It seems that the phone is not using mobile hotspots to do the background uploading (probably because they are often unreliable and you may not stay in the range for long enough - and as has been said, the pho app cannot do resuming of uploads already started when you get to a wifi range again)
So press thanks button if i helped you guys. Thanks for visiting XDA
I had the same issue for the long time and I just now managed to fix it.
Go to the Settings and fully FORGET your WiFi connection. Reconnect by entering again your password.
That did it for me. After half a year of inactivity, Playstore immediately started updating my apps and Photos started backing up over 430 images that were in the que.
Switching to mobile data also fixed "waiting for WiFi" holdup inside Photos app, but since I am on 500MB/month data plan, I never relied on that.
Did you guys have an SD card formatted as internal? I think the issue stems from that. I had the same issue a while back with more than one app like google photos, google play music (for podcast downloads), etc... basically anything that waited for Wifi to do anything.
I backed up and redid everything without formatting the card as internal and haven't had those issues since.
I've heard formatting as internal can cause other odd problems too.
waiting wifi to auto backup google photo
Solution
1. switch on to airplane mode
1.1 activate wifi
2. open google photo aps
3. open setting
4. open backup & sync
5. activate cellular data backup
now you can auto back up your photo or video with WIFI
after backup deactivate Cellular data backup
2nd option
1. deactivate mobile data
2. open google photo aps
3. open setting
4. open backup & sync
5. activate cellular data backup
now you can auto back up your photo or video with WIFI
after backup deactivate Cellular data backup

Once I uninstalled all the Google Photo updates, it started working for me. The only Settings option I had available in the latest version was "About". After removing the updates, all the Settings items returned and so did the ability to sync.
