Hi Folks,
I've been talking to a few people on Howard Forums who think this is impossible, but now on several different occasions, LTE Discovery has shown my phone as being connected to Band 12. This is a stock, D6616 which is currently showing Bands 2 and 4 as active in the service screen and NOT Band 12. Can this be possible? I was able to pull over, stay connected and run a speed test on Band 12 which showed 10mbps download, which sounds about right given that it's just a 5mhz channel. Oh, and this was in San Jose, CA and then Cupertino/Saratoga, CA. Another weird issue is that, I don't believe the Channel 51 interference has been solved here.
So, I'm not trying to spread misinformation but could it be that the T-Mobile Z3 actually has Band 12 out of the box? Or, is LTE Discovery simply inaccurate and this is all just a dream?

That may just be wrong, I pretty sure it has to be turned on via an update. Sprint did the same with the G2.
If you are in Cupertino/San Francisco, I believe T-Mobile does not have permission to use band 12 in your area. They have to make a deal with the local TV station to get them off 51.
T-Mobile Band 12 spectrum Map, current state:
https://sites.google.com/site/cellularbinder/t-mobile-700a-spectrum
I thought the whole reason (besides to LOCK OUR BOOTLOADERS) that T-Mobile has its own variant is that it supports Band 12. I know mine has had band 12 in some areas where I live for a while now.
They have band 12 in my area too, in Minneapolis if you look at the band 12 spectrum map, but until it's finished testing they won't push the OTA update to your phone to enable it. Sprint did the same, they eventually sent an OTA enabling their third band. Though with the G2 you could still enable even without it using the Hidden Settings menu, which is crippled on the D6616, probably on TMOs wishes.
Two things amaze me about this situation:
1) The Samsung devices on T-Mobile (and LG for that matter) are usually bootloader unlocked. Why must T-Mobile force Sony to lock all the bootloaders? It's very odd as usually T-Mobile is the best carrier on that front. Sorry, I know this is off-topic.
2) Why would the Note 4 already support Band 12 and they didn't demand that Samsung lock that one out?
@lunaandres: Are you saying your T-Mobile Z3 has connected to Band 12? How did you verify it? More info would be fantastic.
Thanks,
-Collin-
Tmobile announced today that the Z3 is getting the band 12 I update in may. Can't post the link because I'm a noon.

Definitely not enabled on my Z3, I live in Akron... So it should be available everywhere I go.
Hoping it fixes my dependency on Wifi-Calling at work...
I definitely enjoy 50mbps downloads atm though, can't imagine what I'd do with faster speeds lol

Does that officially mean that Sony's lollipop update for Xperia Z3 D6616 will be released in May 2015? Ugh.
Sadly, I proved my own theory and wishes wrong yesterday and just wanted to update you guys.
I drove over to the same spot where I regularly see Band 12 on LTE Discovery and I popped my T-Mobile SIM into my Verizon Tablet Z2. We know for a fact that there is no Band 12 support on that tablet, yet sure enough LTE Discovery reported Band 12 loud and clear.
Bummer, definitely not a Band 12 siting on my devices. Sad

No, D6633 does not support Band 12, the D6616 supports it but just needs to be enabled.

Does Z3 D6616 really connect to band 12?
I know that back in June T-Mobile enabled band 12 for Z3, but when I check T-Mobile's page where it lists devices that are compatible with band 12, Xperia Z3 is not on the list: http://www.t-mobile.com/optional-services/coverage-phones-700.html

Its probably a mistake on the website, it works. In fact I actually disable bands 2 &4 so I am always on band 12 which gives me full signal and hence greater battery life. Speeds will be lower though as TMO has less spectrum on that band.

I have tried that,so when I disable LTE bands 2 and 4, my phone connects to 4G bands, but if I disable 4G, then there is no service. I guess the area where I was, doesn't have band 12 available yet. I will try it again. By the way do you know, in which case phone should connect to band 12? Is it only when there is not band 2/4 around?
Then I suppose you live in an area without Band 12 Support or maybe its only in testing in a few places near you?
It should connect to Band 12 when the other two bands drop too low, I get 2-3 bars on 2&4 and when it goes to one bar then it switches to Band 12 which then shows full signal.

I checked the map of where T-Mobile has band 12 and found 3 locations(all within 20 min driving from each other) The only thing is that band 2 and 4 in these areas are really good, never go below 4 bars. I will try to disable all bands except band 12 and see if phone will connect. When I work, phone isn't getting LTE inside the building, but 3 or 4G is there, but data doesn't go through for some reason. That is where I would need band 12

Anyone here from Canada that have seen 3G on their Xperia??? I am not sure what's going on since officially Rogers (FIDO) supports 1900 3G, or at least it worked a year ago on my Nokia E51 which is was only 1900 for North American 3G. Xperia refuses to get any signal when I am switching it to 3G mode.
Anyone?
Sorry, Nokia e51 was only 850 3G. That's explains it....
So you're not getting any 3G action on Rogers/Fido?
That's too bad.
I thought that 3G would work in Canada, and I'm really tempted to buy the X1, based on this
http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=6165
Ah, now I see some more clarification on the subject:
from the Pocketnow article comments:
"The Xperia X1i does not have the 850 Band.
Users in Canada, where they mostly have the 850 Band, have not been able to use 3G on their Xperia.
In the US, 850 and 1900 Bands overlap with more coverage by 1900 than the 850 Band. So, you will get 1900 Band reception wherever there is 850 Band but not the other way around.
http://www.cellularmap.net/att_850_1900.shtml"
Yea that sucks. But having edge is much better than using gprs...which is what i'm stuck with at the moment.
Will have to see how the phone is when it comes in 1-2 days.
I'm a Fido user as well and waiting on my Xperia (should be here tomorrow!). I've been driving myself nuts by trying to determine whether or not Rogers/Fido users will be able to pickup 3G with the X1i.
I'll definitely contribute my findings to this thread, as hopefully we can keep it going even if there is no 3G on the X1i yet...It would be a dream come true if the X1i was able to have the X1a's firmware flashed to it which could then change the frequency of the UMTS band (or something like that).

NEvolution, are you saying that if we don't pick up a 3G signal with the X1i, then it should fall back to EDGE which is faster than GPRS? Reason I ask is that my HTC Universal now has GPRS only, so at least I would be getting a _small_ upgrade in speed.
Plus with the cost of data in Canada and the quicker rate at which you'll burn through 3G bytes, it's still not very tempting for me just yet.
Yea, that was the case with the Touch Pro when I had it. Since it didn't have 850 3G it was always on EDGE. It never even touched GPRS cause EDGE is everywhere for me.
I would assume it's exactly the same case with the X1i, and any other phone with supported bands.
As for burning through data, I've got 6GBs a month to use so I'm not worried

Yea unfortunately I missed my opportunity to grab that option...I have City Fido, and when I called, the CSR said I couldn't just add it on...then later another CSR said that I could have, but now it's expired. 1gb for $30...b0o.
aww boo...I haven't even gotten past 1GB/mth yet. Seems pretty hard to use it up since the max I have is EDGE for now, and that includes tethering and using it as a wifi router too.
well in that case, $30 for 1gb on EDGE might not do me too bad. What are the speeds that you're getting with Rogers on EDGE?
Can't test at the moment as my backup phone only has GPRS.
But when I was using EDGE on my Touch Pro the speeds were pretty decent. Average pages load reasonably fast using Opera.
Roger 3G
Rogers 3G network is down, it has been down for the last month and a bit, they are trying to fix stuff so they turned it of and only the 2G network is working at the moment. It is not your devices.
They are not sure when it will be up again
coolturbog, I think you're right - I haven't had 3G on my Kaiser for at least a month.
Other writers are saying that the X1i completely lacks the 850 band. Although the software (WWE) says it's present, it's not.
I hope that's not true.
Just tested browsing speed using i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html on Opera.
On EDGE: 110 kbps

I am getting a strong 3G signal on my Nokia E71 all the time with the descent speed of 800 kbit to 1 Mbit. And it's been like that for the last 4 months. So, your statement about Rogers network being down it's not correct. I've heard some rumors that they are not allowing Windows Mobile devices to utilize 3G speeds completely, but again - I am not sure how legitimate those obligations are. On the other hand - with Rogers monopoly in GSM arena - everything is possible....

I also tried changing between HSDPA ONLY and HSDPA/HSUPA in the Advanced settings under Start --> Settings --> Connections... (it requires a soft reset with each change), but still all I get is EDGE....
The connection settings are automatic from the "ROGERS" cellular network and the settings confirm it is using the modem "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)".....
hmmm......

How did you extract it from an X1a? May you please upload the entire X1a ROM's?
I'm using the X1i in SW Ontario and I get perfectly usable 3G coverage, as I've gotten with all the SE products I've used with Rogers (K850, Z750, W760)
Just my two cents
Anyone else have a Play in the US? Do you have LTE? I don't. My download is <1.0mbps
I'm on T-Mobile, and have verified the APN settings listed on T-Mo's website (I can't post links due to my n00bness).
It says I'm on band 4, which I believe is an LTE band, but I haven't gotten LTE since I received it. My tablet gets full LTE in the same locations.
Do you have the European or Canadian version?
Mexican. Unlocked edition via motomaker. It functions, I just don't have LTE.
I'm betting this will mean I won't be able to make calls on B12, either.
This phone should be 100% compatible with Tmo
The XT1563 SS & the XT1563 DS both have the exact same bands (LTE) and should work all over North & South America.
Tmo uses AWS 1700/2100 band 4 for LTE as well as band 12 (700) which the Moto X Play XT1563 has.
Silly question - Did you select LTE as the preferred network? under network settings, otherwise it probably won't hook up to LTE just go 3G.

Do you test this by speed, or simply looking for it to say lte? Try doing a speed test.
I did a speed test and got <1mbps down.
My 1st gen moto x gets LTE here. I drove for 30 miles watching the new one and it never got LTE.
Preferred network type only gives the option of 2g/3g/4g, I don't see LTE listed.

manually put the APN settings of TMO
Okay, this *may* be a false alarm. I went into the "*#*#4636#*#*" settings page, and it shows LTE. Even though the menu bar shows "4g" (which in the past meant HSPA+ on my T-mo stuff), the internal page showed LTE.
I did the same speedtest on my tablet which shows LTE and it's showing comparable (slow) speeds. I'm always on wi-fi here so I never noticed!
I'll run a speed test next time I'm down in the valley where reception is really good and see what's up.
Just got mine today, I'm on cricket and getting LTE. The phone shows 4G in the status bar but connection details shows LTE

TMO is the source of your confusion. While the rest of the world equates 4G with LTE, TMO's nasty marketing relabeled HSPA+ (still 3G elsewhere) as such.
Yeah I've never heard of HSPA+ referred to as 4G. In the UK LTE is just called 4G.

My 6p on Verizon shows global, CDMA LTE or GSM LTE. After getting fed up with my LTE dropping constantly I just tried (about 5 minutes ago) switching it to GSM LTE even though I know Verizon is CDM just to see what would happen. My phone went from no service to full LTE instantly. Really weird no idea why that would happen. Then in the middle of writing this post phone dropped LTE again. I went and switched it back to CDMA LTE and now I have full LTE again.
It seems like when you are traveling and you hit a dead spot switching the network preference resets the phone signal and it finds a closer tower or something works either way you switch. That is my two cents.
2G, 3G, LTE (recommended) are the only selections I have on my phone. I'm using WETA 8.4 and on cricket wireless, which btw has a $70 plan where I get unlimited everything - no cap on data...I literally stream Hulu/Netflix without any interruption. I stopped using major cellular companies when I was getting screwed with hidden data fee's <AT&T> was always notorious for charging 20 bucks after so many gigs...Also I'm paying a third less than what most of friends are, but if has it's disadvantages too.

I went to the APN settings and updated it but all i get now is edge (2g) I had the Z3 before and was getting around 35-100 Mbps in my area. now i cant even load a web page. Can you (or anyone reading this) help me out. I sold my z3 just hours before my z5 came, which was a mistake since now i really cant do anything with my phone (besides use it on WiFi and call). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
btw my phone model is Sony Xperia Z5 Premium E6853

You have to setup the APN settings - https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090
Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names

The signal quality is great. I have at times gotten LTE bands 2, 4 and 12, so I have found it quite good. I Am loving the UI and the interface. And it is the fastest 810 based phone I have had based on feel and benchmarks. Also, zero heat issues. I dont think that I have have even felt it get warm

Under preferred network type, do you have LTE (preferred) checked?
Also, in your APN settings, is your APN "fast.t-mobile.com" ?

Use something like Network Signal Info.
It's a result of the fact that in the US, carriers screwed over customers by redefining HSPA+ as "4G". Frequently referred to as Faux-G.
So when a US device reports 4G, an international device will usually just report the truth (H+)
When a US device reports LTE (because the US carriers ****ed up the definition of 4G), international devices will usually just report 4G, because in the rest of the world, 4G == LTE.
Z5P is definitely in this category. HSPA+ = H+, LTE = 4G

It depends on which firmware you are using. Most area in Euro will display 4g as LTE but they mean the same thing. I suggest you flash it to other area which display LTE instead.
I got band 12 here. What is weird is that when I show 1 to 2 bars, my wife's Nexus 6 with the same carrier will show full bars. Yet when I look at Lte Discovery, we have the same signal strength.

The signal bars can often be wrong. They give false signal information
You can check with TechMode (Sony's band checker app).
It's in oem.sin of Customized UK and I deodexed Z5 one:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24459283995301842
After placing it to /system/app, chmod 644 and reboot, you can open TechMode with dialing *#*#*386#*#*
So, I have done this with several of the Nexus devices and now for the Pixel XL! As a network geek I love to see LTE Speeds, Bands, and carrier info. Please use this thread to post info about your Carrier, LTE Bands, Speeds and what area you were in when doing the tests. As these are global devices I would love to see results from around the world Below are links to good apps to help identify your carrier's LTE Bands and speeds:

For me personally, I came from the Nexus 6P as my daily driver and I noticed that now with the PIXEL XL I have AT&T Band 30 (which supports 2 band aggregation) in the small town where I work. my speeds more than doubled! (before someone tells me, I know the 6P also supports Band 30 but for some reason I can't get more than 50 meg at the same spot with my 6p)

I have a Pixel and 2 Pixel XL's and all 4 carriers.. Below is the test from my Verizon XL on XLTE Band 4..
Don't have great coverage with Sprint and T-Mobile where I work. Will post screen shots when I get home from work. This is in Central PA btw
OK, as promised a few more screenshots from all 4 carriers taken between work and home in Central Pa You can see the band types and signal strength in the upper left corner of each shot. Not really seeing any difference in speeds or coverage on any of the carriers and my previous Nexus devices except for on AT&T Band 30. Huge speed increases there.

Out of curiousity. How are you determining band (Carrier) aggregation on your 6P and Pixel?
Samsung phones have the Field test app. Which to my knowledge is the only real way of determining if carrier aggregation is working?
Also, To contribute to the thread. Here's VZW band 4 in Brevard County Florida. I suspect 2x carrier aggregation. As my Nexus 6p gets the same speeds, And it doesn't support 3CA.
Sorry, I should have been clearer, I simply meant that Band 30 supports 2 band aggregation. I have no way of knowing if that is happening on my pixel or not. I do know that standing in the same spot with the same sim card both the Pixel XL and the 6P connect to Band 30 while the 6P gets 50-70 meg the Pixel xl gets 100-130 meg Not sure on all the details but I love the speed
Fantastic speed on VZW there btw.. don't have anything near that fast around here...

Lots of other threads on this already, Look under the OnePlus 3 section.. If you have an officially supported LTE capable AT&T phone, give AT&T that IMEI, make sure that it is in their system and then simply move the SIM to Pixel. Don't ever give the IMEI of the pixel to AT&T.... They don't seem to have them in there system and if you try to add them it will flag it as a NON LTE device

That explains it. I needed to get a micro sim this would have been the first LTE on att for me

I can confirm I took an ATT simcard out of an Iphone 6 (Mothers phone) and put it in my VZW varient Pixel XL and it hopped on LTE immediately. Both band 2, And band 17 when I forcibly attenuated the signal (Covered the phone with my hands).

there you go.. Lots of other users have run into this... You need to get your hands on a real ATT IMEI.. Or if your lucky, twist someone's arm at AT&T, but that won't likely happen.

Ah, Gotcha. Yeah. They also do CA in a few other configs too, 2+17 being the main.
Had a buddies note 7 in my hands the other day from ATT. It was doing active CA 5+2. Which was surprising.

cool, I live in the middle of Verizon country, they own all the landline/fiber around here and its taken a long time for AT&T to get fiber to their towers here but in the last several months I have seen AT&T vehicles everywhere around here and now bam!! Band 30 shows up with speeds consistently over 50 meg. Pretty amazing stuff.. Some good articles on it over on fiercewireless.com.

Yeah, I don't think it's turned up yet here. I'll have to do more ATT sim card testing. Great to see them loading new spectrum. How's it work indoors? Being that it's 2300mhz, It's not going to penetrate structures like their lower bands do (like 5 and 17 that are in the 800ish-mhz range).

Yup!, I noticed band 5 go live right along with 30.. Used to always be 17 and 2.. Inside my office its always band 17, at my house I see a combination of 2, 4, 5 and 30.. Mostly Band 2 around here in the past year, which isn't awful but doesn't touch 30
