[Q] Unactivated phone showing mobile data usage? - Droid Incredible General

I have encountered something quite strange and was wondering if anyone could explain it.
It looks like I am posting to a fairly dead subforum (these phones get old fast!) so I hope somebody can explain it.
I have a Verizon branded HTC Droid Incredible 4G that has a SIM card installed but it is NOT activated with any data plan.
The strange part is that it shows that mobile network data has been transferred. Both upload and download.

Obviously I can't use free data but when I try, the 3G icon shows upload and occasionally download activity.
Does anybody know how that could be possible?

This thread is for the og droid incredible not incredible 4g. The incredible 4g forums are a better place for your questions.

[Q] MyTouch 4G unlimited 4G?

I've been looking over a few threads here about the soft data caps that T-Mobile uses. I'm aware about how it works and everything but I've found something kind of odd. I've seen a couple of posts about other people having some success with it.
Over the past 3 or 4 months my phone has been my primary internet connection by using the hotspot feature. This phone is completely stock (non rooted, no custom roms, etc) and within a few days of my new billing cycle I would hit the 5GB data limit for my plan. Out of frustration I turned off WCDMA/GSM auto to GSM to see if it would work faster. I turned it back to auto after a day or two and found that I had been un-throttled. I would check the My Account app on my phone and it would state that I had been throttled but everything is working on 4G speeds.
So this month just out of curiosity I've been using as much data as possible just to see if anything will be done. I'm not trying to be a data hog or anything, this is just out of curiosity. I'm 7 days into my billing cycle and have used over 22 gigs and still going strong. I'm currently streaming Netflix in HD and have two laptops and another smart phone using the data.
Does anyone know if I'll see a cease and desist letter from T-Mobile or if anything at all will happen?
Side note: This phone/T-Mobile has really surprised me with the speeds and capabilities it has. I used an iPhone4 with AT&T to stream Netflix and the quality and buffering was horrendous in comparison.
This sounds extremely beautiful to me as I bought the 10$ 200mb and I blow through that in less then a day. If this works you would not believe how happy this would make me. As for T-Mobile doing a cease and desist order I would highly doubt it. When I had a T-Mobile dash 2 years ago, without a data plan I was able to connect to the internet free of charge, and I would watch youtube Justin.tv and so on. I did this for almost 1 and a half years and have seen nothing from T-Mobile.
so basically, all you did was turn it to only GSM for a day or two, and then back on and the throttle went away?
Im gonna try the same thing and see what kinda speeds im getting after I turn it back on. 5gigs goes really quick and throttled speeds suck, Drives me crazy.. Ill get back with my results..
Subscribing to this... I just got a throttle boner. If this turns out to work for other folks I will seriously **** my pants. I had to upgrade to the $60 10gb plan bc I have been using this as my primary internet.

Haha I remember this hack from the G1 days, when people used over 2gb data at that time. It actually works, it tricks the system I guess. I thought tmo patched it.
I've searched everywhere and can't find the setting, could someone shed some light.

Sure. Type *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer. From in there you can choose GSM only.

Since it is decided on their side i don't think they will try any legal action or whatever against you, happy throttling

/Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile Networks/Network Mode. Then select GSM only
thats the first place I looked but to no avail, I can't seem to find the network modes but the *#4636#*#* works just fine, has anyone found this method to work?

i dont remember stock rom having the 2g option so...yea
What phone are you currently using?

Just an update on my usage. I've attached a screenshot of the amount of data that I've used so far from the monitor usage section of mytmobile.com
Also a speedtest that I ran just now just to see what it's running at. Right now usually seems around peak time, the ping and download speed is usually a bit faster at night.

That's what I was going to have to do to try to avoid being throttled. If you get a chance to try it out let me know what happens.
If anyone else does want to try this if you could let me know what happens. Also if you could let me know the phone model, current data plan, and anything else that you think may be important. I'm curious to know if it is my phone, the MyTouch 4G's in general, or what. I don't know anyone else with a smart phone with T-Mobile that cares about this so if anyone could provide any feedback on this it would be great.
My refill minutes and data just started today and I'm already at 1 gig will probably report back next Sunday
I have gotten the "5gb throttle" text from T-Mobile a couple times but I have never been throttled and that's without doing this "trick". I've never done anything and still seem to not get throttled even tho I've gotten the texts saying they were going to throttle me for the remainder of my cycle. It did it on my MT4G and its also doing it on my Sensation now. Maybe I'm just lucky.
*knocks on wood*
Im trying this asap...I run a shoutcast radio station (limbik frequencies if anyone cares to know) and I drive a truck all night so have been listening via the 4g while i drive...needless to say I run out of data in no time. Even if I upgraded to the 5gb plan (which is the highest they offer me) I'd still run out...1mb per minute, 5-9 hours a night....doesn't add up right! Worst part is that its a nonprofit station that AOL pays for our bandwidth to stream...seriously I shouldn't have to pay out the ass to make sure its running and simultaneously enjoy it!

No VZW data plan, got 4G SIM w/ 4G upgrade.

I bought my VZW Xoom day one without a data plan, and never got one, so I was expecting not to get a 4G SIM card when I got the 4G radio upgrade.
Am I just lucky or did everyone without a data plan get a 4G SIM with the 4G radio upgrade?

No data plan and I got one, I'm pretty sure they are at least some will turn it on, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if VZW had MOTO put the SIM card in as a temptation.
My tbolt 4G SIM worked fine in my Xoom, so at least I know the new radio works.
Some people with Xoom data plans had a harder time getting their new SIM card to work, than I did using my tbolt SIM.

I seriously have to pose this question... So your TBOLT SIM card works in your 4G XOOM, correct?
So does that mean, that there may be a possible loop-hole around these lame XOOM data caps?
I don't own a 4G phone, but say someone happened to add a line to their plan with a extra TBOLT 4G (before the new limited data plans), then technically you could experience "unlimited" 4G data on your Motorola XOOM just by switching the SIM?
Someone is bound to catch onto this eventually... and then so will Verizon... but if it works now, then why not?
EDIT: Lmao, someone beat me to it (this was the first thread I read), then I saw this thread after my post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288922
My bad.
All Xooms getting the 4G upgrade without the data plan will get a sim card so if you decide (wink wink, at least according to motorola and version) get the data they just need your SIM# do the activation.
My roommate's xoom doesn't have the data plan and he plans on using the wifi only for now so he didn't care about the radio breaking and wanted everything back how it was so there he goes for that.
Now, as for people having an hard time getting there sim card to work (those with data plans already), I didn't had any problems, I booted it up, after about 5 minutes of poking around and about to go into the bootloader to unlock it I get a message saying there's a sim card in there and asked if I wanted to activate it, and when I did I got my 4g data working with no problem.
Also, I don't see why you can't use your 4G phone's sim card in the xoom, they all act the same way in terms of activation and use. The whole point of the sim card is for you to easily change your phones without having to really go through yet another activation process and what not.

You wouldn't be able to add a new line with a tbolt and have unlimited data because a new line would be subject to the tiered data. If you were to upgrade to a 4g phone on a line that had unlimited data already this works.
I have a tbolt on an unlimited plan and am using my sim in my xoom to stream netflix as I speak.
Gueeze, does Verizon even have a development team at all, or are they so cheap that they just let their consumers find all the exploits for them?
Maybe they laid them all off.
At any rate, once they are wise to this particular type of bandwidth "theft", is it a simple fix on their end, or do they have to further tighten policy, making their data plans even less attractive than they are now?

Actually according to Verizon this is acceptable use of our 4g sim cards.
http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/faqs/VZAccess/4g_sim_card.html?grp=1&faq=8
" Can I use my Verizon Wireless 4G SIM in more than one device?
Yes; the Verizon Wireless 4G SIM card contains all of your subscriber information, so the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card."
Great find.

I have run out of ideas! 3G Limited?

Hello there new guy here, and XDA noob
For a while now, about 2 years i have been stuck on a maximum of 250 kbps. Previously i had a HTC Desire Rooted and with custom rom Redux. I could never get above 250 kbps on 3g.
Now i have a HTC One X, and yet im still getting the same speeds, which kinda rules out any hardware bottlenecks. I can run on both T-Mobile and Orange Uk (because they merged). My brother owns a HTC Sensation and runs on the exact same carrier as i do and uses the same mast and manages to gain over 500kbps.. HOW?!
I tried ringing orange and asking if there was any limitations and they said no, they even put me through to the best tech service they had :l. Any ideas guys? I would be very rgateful if you could give me any insight. thanks
need more info. this doesnt sound right at all. where do you live? ever checked your distance to nearest cell tower? do you know of anyone else getting better speeds on the same network?
do you have proper network selected in settings? correct APN?
perhaps network build.prop tweaks? sometimes they help other times they can hurt..
also *#*#INFO#*#* select phone information and radio band.
could also have a bad SIM card if it is old.
I live in the UK, Around Birmingham and Coventry. I'm usually always on full signal and iv'e even been as close as the "Danger Radiation" sign lol My brother typically gets over 500 kbps and is pretty consistant... lucky B... :l
Correct APN? I presume you mean Carrier? im with Orange and it all seems grand.. so i think anyways.
Build.prop, i wouldn't know where to start with that ,i presume make a backup and try flashing an update.zip, if any problems use restore?
Not quit sure what im looking for in Phone info, help me out ?
And im sure it's not the sim card, it's the new micro sim that came with the phone !
APN = access point name
and you would only have access to your build.prop(properties) if you are rooted.
phone info; try entering this into the dialer : *#*#4636#*#*
select phone information (then you might need to press menu button) and choose radio band from there. You may also be able to change this in settings.
Is 500kbs the fastest speed you guys have seen? sounds very odd. I think I may have heard of this.. being too close to a tower causes terrible speeds, if it is fact the case, you may want to try connecting to the next closest tower. there should be some free apps around to view your cell tower info and possibly even change towers.
500kbs is not 3g.
Yeah it looks like all my APN settings and band is correct, if they weren't i wouldn't really be on a 3g signal what so ever. No other useful information is seen in info, Also, i have tried switching between carriers and tried the speed test on many many differen't towers. Im really stumped myself, and my phones rooted, but without RUU i can't install any Radio drivers can i?
3G service usually does not get above 2mb which in reality is only 200kbs.. i ran a speed test on a buddy's iPhone and it was only 1.54mb which is only 150kbs.... So you are right in the mid grade of speed... Get a 4G cell...
Those are horrible speeds for 3G at the least. Absolutely atrocious!
Have you tried consulting your carrier? Perhaps they could resolve the issue.

My brother has a HTC Sensation and is able to get 600 kb/s+ I hope your not confusing it with kbps ! Sorry if i confused you !
And yeah i contacted them a while ago and they said everything was fine from their end !
I have a HTC ONE X, surely that's capable of H+, Something isn't right.

[Q] Verizon Samsung 4G LTE

Hi all, great site! I have used the search facility and viewed dozens of threads ( as well as searching google) and can't find an answer, so my first post is going to be a question.
I was given the Verizon Samsung 7.7 4G LTE as a gift, but was hoping to be able to use it as wireless only as I am in the UK and we don't have 4G and I don't actually want to use any Sims with it.

You'll have no issues using it as wifi only! I do it with mine.
Do get a VZW sim (free in store US or 3-5 dollars online ebay) so you can disable mobile data (Packet Data). This'll help you get battery life almost inline with the wifi P6810. There are ways to disable the com services but you'll get 2 FC's anytime you reboot which are annoying.
And enjoy the 7.7, easily the best tablet out there as far as im concerned.
If this helps, I can disable cellular packet data separately from wifi, just leave that off, tablet doesn't care.

One could:
1) Remove the sim
2) Reset the tablet
3) During the startup wizard specify wi-fi only

Page Plus Reviews Advice

I was thinking of switching my Inc and my wife's over to page plus cellular to save a few bucks a month. My understanding is they operate over the verizon network.
I was wondering what other dinc users experiences were with pp. Most important thing to me is network coverage. In my area verizon is best, sprint,T-Mobile, att all suck. Wondering if pp users experience similar call quality/coverage to Verizon. Also how was the transition with dinc? Was it painful?
Right now I'm running rooted stock gb. But might switch to cm 7.2.
Any tips or suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I used page plus when I was home last year and didn't have any problems. It was simple transition, to activate and get service. It was good to see that my Inc still worked. 3g data worked as well. I am running CM7.2

my Mom and GF have rooted Dincs running on PPC. both are on the 1200 TNT plan with 500 mb. They both primarily check email and send mms text messages and barely use 100 mb each month, sometimes alot less. it works well for them. They get Verizon service at a pretty low price.
I buy my pins at pincheap.com at discount.
