Today, I backed up my Note 4 using Samsung Kies before doing a factory reset hoping that it'll help with the GPS issue I'm facing.
After the reset, I tried the GPS and it didn't help so I did a restore but found my data and settings gone
Call records, contacts and apps came back just fine but almost 2 years of financial and vehicle records as well as game saves gone,
is it normal or did I do something wrong?
normal. without root you cant backup settings etc. i normally use dukto to copy stuff pictures and documents etc to the PC and backup knox where all my info is by removing and restoring the container.
Thanks, I'll need to be mindful of how I backup till I get the device rooted.
if you root you lose a lot of functionality including warranty, knox, remote wipe, policy enforcement etc.

My battery died whilst some apps were updating and ever since I have been getting a lot of crashes and various other problems.
So I'm thinking of doing a factory reset but I have a couple of questions:
I have used the nexus root toolkit to make backups before but can anyone tell me if this backs up game data such as progress and in particular, in-app purchases?
Does restoring from this backup restore app settings or just put the apps back on?

Although it back ups the apps etc I had a few issues using the backup tool it was telling me to install apps and that info was missing etc. So the best thing to do is plug your unit into an PC and drag the file data (Android/data) onto your desktop, this way once you have factory reset and done your back up you can drag that file back onto your device and you will have all game progress saved. If you have an emulator installed some of the Memory cards are hidden in the file system meaning you will have to find them in FPse or whatever you use and back them up as well, to be honest I just use root browser and email them to myself :good:
Ugh! Pretty gutted now.
Decided to cover all bases. Did a regular backup using the toolkit. Did another backup with all the shared data using the toolkit and manually copied the data to my computer as suggested above.
After the factory reset I restored the full backup with shared data. Although some games have retained settings, some haven't and NONE have any of the in-app purchase stuff.
So copied back all the data I copied to PC and still nothing.
As an example, Bad Piggies HD. My son bought a load of in-app stuff after the PIN was reset (without my knowledge) and none of the stuff is there and all levels are locked again.

Tsk! I've now discovered that the restore has only restored about half my apps, let alone settings!
Hello, since my system had been unstable recently, I used Keis to backup my Note PRO and did a hardware reset. I selected all to backup everything and also selected all to recover everything. Unfortunately, after the recovery, I found:
1. Some settings were set incorrectly or disappeared.
2. One photo became corrected
3. Stored passwords to google, yahoo, Facebook are gone. I need to re-enter everything
4. The mails that I sent to people using the mail address from my phone company are all gone.
So, Keis 3 is not a reliable app to backup the device?
Keis 3 is not a complete backup software it will only save samsung and minor system settings. You need to be rooted to backup data files which hold most of what you have missing.
It's sad that we can't have a full backup of all needed settings and files. There are some solutions like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en_GB Helium which is the only 9 new that will not need rooting the device.

I can't perform a Whatsapp backup since January this year, regardless if Google Drive Backup is checked, if the Whatsapp app is stored in the local or on sd card memory, automatic backups are being cancelled, too.
After I hit "Backup", the Dialogue "Messages are being backed up" shows up, which closes after 10 sec without any error message.
I tried to contact the WA Support, but they insist that my S4 is rooted (which it isn't, maybe because of the custom ROM I use).
I have flashed my Samsung I9505 in January this year from CM 12.1 to CM 13. At the beginning, the phone ran smoothless except BT. After a while, WiFi stopped working as well. I tried to flash the CM 12.1 backup and radios without any success, just a new mainboard helped. I installed my CM 12.1 backup from January via TWRP from my old mainboard, which ran without any errors on it (after a fullwipe on the new one).
The phone works great, except the WA backup.
WA gets always updated to the current version, I have ~1,2 GB free internal memory, I tried to update to the latest CM 12.1 5.1.1 version from 12/26/2015, perform a backup via 4G, 3G, Wifi, with an without Google Backup checked, cleared the cache and wiped Dalvic Cache, there is no app deactivated.
I use Baseband I9505XXUHOD7 and Kernel: 3.4.107-cyanogenmod-gab9afd6clyde.
Running a custom ROM means you are rooted.
Now, I don't know why whatsapp wouldn't work on a rooted ROM, but if you want to backup you can use titanium backup.

There is no root, please check the screenshot below.
Since there is no root, I can't use Titanium Backup, however, it wouldn't be the most practicable way to backup your Whatsapp history every time with Titanium Backup.
Besides that, I don't think this would work if I would like to transfer my history to a new phone on which WA Backup should work as intended as I won't flash the ROM/install root and void the warranty.
WA backup worked perfect with the old logicboard before flashing CM 13.

Root has to be activated from developer options.
That is definitely a whatsapp problem if it worked before.

Well, I haven't even unlocked the developer options until now..
Any idea how to convince WA doing it's job? Anybody with this problem before?
if you really want a backup it makes more sense that you either activate root or flash superSU yourself rather than wait on whatsapp to change their code just for you. they've already told you effectively that they aren't going to do anything for you and don't have to.
backing up the app and data with TiBu and copying the whatsapp folder achieves everything you want and has worked flawlessly for me many many times.
Well guys, got a new phone but the problem persists when trying to restore my history on the new phone and really need your help.
Got root on the old phone and saved the com.whatsapp folder of it with the key file and databases. How can I encrypt the msgstore.db to msgstore.db.crypt8?
I have tried the app Whatcrypt, which creates a msgstore.db.crypt file, as large as msgstore.db, but Whatsapp on the new phone does not recognize it as a backup file.
When using whatcrypt.com and uploading the key and msgstore.db, it tells me "Encryption failed / Incorrect account?"
Also tried Omni-Crypt app. It creates msgstore.crypt, which Whatsapp ignores as well ("searching for Backups" with waiting triangle for hours)
I don't know any other way and I'm literally stuck now

you can paste that onto a new phone and restore the app and data with titanium.

Of course I can copy the Whatsapp folder on the root of the storage but this folder only contains the wa media files of my old phone since there are no msgstore.db.cryptX files created by Whatsapp.
For TiBa I would need to root the new phone which is a S7 Edge and I would like to avoid this until the warranty has expired. It is not as easy to do repairs by yourself as the S4..
fair enough, have you tried copying both folders over and installing from playstore ? or rather, install the app but don't open it, copy over both folders and then try and see what happens...
Hi, in these days my phone was sent to service repair. Now all data is cleared. Before repair I made a full backup via Samsung account.
Now I can't restore backup, also tried wipe data and re-flash firmware.
At first boot tried to restore backup, when it search for backups, it appear a loading bar with something like "Restore" and it looking for backups but it will disappear in few seconds.
I have minimum of 3 backups stored, tried to redo a backup manually and restore but I can't, same via Settings->Backup and restore.
What can I do? It seems that I can't restore my past and future backups.

Not yet, I think that it's not a problem related with the smartphone but with the account. I think that we have to call Samsung support.

SOLVED! Resetted the app Samsung Cloud and then updated, reboot, wait 2/3 mins and restored backup successfully.
Did not work. How did you reset? Just cleared the data? And I see no updates..

Yes, cleared cache and data. It worked for me.
You may try to see logs.
1. Open dialer and compose *#9900#, clic on DEBUG LEVEL and select MID or HIGH, your device will reboot automatically.
2. Redo the procedure to try to restore backup(in this way you will generate the logs for your issue)
3. Open dialer and compose *#9900#, clic on RUN DUMPSTATE/LOGCAT/MODEM LOG, wait for the process to complete and select COPY TO SD CARD (include CP RAMDUMP)
4. Search for the log file and see if you can read something wrong.
Contacted Samsung Support. And that is exactly what they did - updated (some nontrivial way) Samsung Cloud app. Then I could do the restore! Hurray!

If anyone still has this issue, what worked for me was to go to Galaxy Apps and update the Cloud app. (You have to display system apps.)

You can follow the steps to get back your Samsung data.
1. Recover the wanted data from Samsung Account. To get back your files, you need to go to Settings and elect Accounts once again. Next, choose Samsung account and tap on Restore. After that, you can select the file types that you want to restore and click on Restore now to start restoring.
2. Confirm your option. After taping on the Restore now option, a pop-up prompt will appear to ask you to confirm your action. Just tap on ok to proceed the process.
I had a problem with restoring my repaired phone. It turned out I had two Samsung Cloud accounts; one with one phone contact and approximately 6 photos. The two SC accounts were attached to two different emails. I found this out by logging in to Samsung Cloud on my PC. Then I had to do a hard restore on my phone and then I was able to sign in to the correct SC account and could restore my precious data.

I'm running into a couple issues with my phone so I want to factory reset. However, I'm stuck in this tricky situation where I was able to import my data from the S7, but I cannot re-back it up under the S8.
I'd been using Helium ever since I got my S7, since it uses the built-in backup methods without requiring root. However, under Nougat it doesn't seem to work as well. You cannot restore backups that include the .apk anymore, you have to install the apps first then restore their data.
Now I'm getting a bunch of apps where I restored the data from an older version where it was still possible, updated the apps from the Play store, and now I can't back them up again! I was testing this out with the actual adb desktop backup commands... those apps just give me a blank backup file. Examples are Gboard (formerly Google Keyboard) - you always used to be able to back that up with adb, and it still shows up in the list (e.g. they didn't do allow backups=false), but it doesn't work. Helium gives an error, adb just gives me a 1KB file with nothing in it. There's clearly data there...
What gets me is that Helium uses the *official* built-in Android desktop backup protocol. It's like Google started killing that off without telling anyone, and without even having the phone return a message saying the app can't be backed up. It appears to work, but you get a blank file.
I used to be able to just use a custom recovery to make a nandroid backup, so I could easily factory reset and recover if that didn't fix the problem. But since there's no root method for the Snapdragon S8, and AFAIK the stock bootloader can't do backups like that, I'm out of options.
Does anyone use any other methods? I know Google/Android *supposedly* backup your appdata for you, but it never works - every time I try that it reinstalls the app with empty data and I have to set everything up all over again.
I would suggest using Samsung's own Cloud to back up your data. Works surprisingly well, it backs up pretty much everything, even home screen layout. It even backs up apps like OGYoutube or anything 3rd party. Looks like it backs up the entire apk and restores them with your data and logins. Worked well for me when I flashed G950U1 firmware
EDIT: Also if you go this route and factory reset your device for whatever reason, upon initial set up skip restoring apps from Google since Samsung's cloud will restore those apps back. I noticed that if you use both restore methods they will clash and your Samsung apps will be overwritten and your data will be wiped. Don't know if anyone else noticed this, just from my experience.

Wait, what? How do I do that? I tried the Smart Switch Windows software (not the one that lets you transfer between phones, there's a PC version too), and it only backed up the .apk, not the data.

Just go under Settings>Cloud and Accounts>Samsung Cloud and enable backup, check it out in there. It pretty much gives you details of what it'll back up for you.

Did you have to turn off any settings on Google backup before resetting phone ?

Looks like Samsung will terminate data back up after 11 Jan 2018 - must be a capacity issue.
